    the death of old age
    poetry by Michael F. Nyiri
    06/27/13
    6:07 am pdt

morning, broken, like an old cat stevens lyric
verdant, full, yet somehow mocking and satiric
in past times, hurting, yearned for health and peace
now, emerging older, wondrin’ when I’ll give up life’s lease

scaling life’s ladder, acquiring ease with age
life’s book won’t close yet, not finished with this page
feeling healthy, and peaceful, and really quite young
in years gone past, could hardly reach the next rung

    mixing metaphors, remembring lovers, whores
waxing poetic, although with waning wobbly shores
tides turn out, the moon goes down, birdies sing in trees
yet birdsong quickly turns to hitchcockian cacophanies

gaining younger purpose as I age am I?
will losing youth arrive, no warning, as I sigh?
lifting weighty thoughts aloft on gossamer wings
a brand new marionette with scissors snipping at my strings

nightfall, in summer, fades so slow with silence
inside my head bombarding feelings collide with violence
my breath sucks scintillating clouds of free full air
and sometimes I just wonder what I’m doing here and there

    “Or Else”
    poetry by Michael F. Nyiri
    06/27/13
    6:35 am pdt

Ah, listen to the the gentle strains of…
    Mendelssohn? Jon Bon Jovi? Pitbull?
open air with earbuds only you can hear

    Or,
    bombast your boombox of yore
    frightening the passersby

    Or,
    Stride along the beach,
ignoring the sand between your toes
    marvel at the crashing waves
    waving goodbye to obstinate
    purposelessness

    Or,
    walk amongst the pillars of
the massive mansions of malicious intent
    trying not to hear the
    voices behind the walls

    Or,
    fall fast asleep
    dreaming of tomorrows
    which never arrive

    Or,
    boot up the corrupt computers
    which byte at your
    insignificant existence
    and savor your “likes”
    like it means something

    Or,
    Ignore
    this,
    and
    embrace that which matters
    even as matter
    is obliterated with ease

    Or,

    Else one can simply smile
it gets so easy that it sometimes hurts
    so it’s all good
    if you let it be

BEHIND THE POETRY: I got to wondering this morning when I’m going to start feeling old. I’m working out now on a regular basis. I’ve been eating “healthy” for almost half a decade now. My weight is pretty much where I want it. I’m building up muscle, I don’t get tired or hurt anymore. Not too many health problems. I once wrote I’d be “30 by the time I’m 60″ and I passed that benchmark this past May 1st. One of my favorite films is The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, where the titular character “ages backwards.” These thoughts that as I age I’m somewhat invincible, and feeling better than in fact I did feel during my youth, when I abused my body with drugs an alcohol and didn’t care what I looked like physically, are what prompted me to pen a couple of poems this morning. Enjoy. happy MFN/ppf

  • Remembering Xanga: Part 9: Xanxiety: A comic strip

In all the excitement about Xanga perhaps closing it’s doors, I completely forgot that this past Memorial Day was my 9th Xangaversary. laughing I usually post “Xangaversary” posts from my vast archives, and I guess these “Remembering Xanga” entries can be construed as this year’s series of Xangaversary posts. For Part 9, in celebration of my 9th Xangaversary, and to continue my “Xangacentric” entries, here is my second of third “Xanxiety” comics, originally posted on 8-30-10. (It received 78 comments and 33 recommends. Can you identify the Xangans charicitured? Do you remember the ‘Xanga bug?’ pictured in the last panel? MFN/ppf 6-20-13 6:30am pdt

  • Remembering Xanga: Part 8: What is Xanga About?

Apologies for not returning comments lately, esp. after the groundswell of support shown for Part 6 (In Which I thank my readers) and yesterday’s post acknowledging the countless Xangans who won’t be able to pay for Xanga 2.0 and who really form the spine of the “community” everyone is writing about on Top Blogs these days. Both my work and home computers have problems right now, and I’m back up to 11 and 12 hour workdays, so time is at a premium too. I do love getting the comments, recommendations, etc, and hope to make some time soon to personally visit you.

In the meantime, I want to repost something from last year. This is the entry that caused someone calling themselves BigBangTheory to deride my blogging “style” accusing me of “telling people how to blog.” Still leaves a bad taste in my mouth when I think of it. But hopefully that Xangan is gone from Xanga. The Xangan whose life I distill in this post, using her own words, is gone too, physically. She died shortly before I created this post. MFN/ppf 6/18/13 7:15am pdt.

Xanga is about us. Ultimately. Xanga is our legacy if we wish it to be. Xanga becomes us. Our thoughts. Our deeds. Our hopes. Our stories. Our quarrels. Our fears. And our joy when we overcome them. Xanga is our friends and sometimes our frenemies. Xanga is our family. Our progeny. Our pets. Our lowest points and our highest. Xanga is our life. Our sense of humor. Our trials, tribulations, friendship, foibles, and faith.

Xanga is a “place” for most of us. Sometimes we feel at home and we return fondly. Sometimes we feel safe, or empowered, or nurtured. Sometimes we turn away. Sometimes we don’t understand something and we stay away for a while. A lot of us are “lifetime members”. A great many of us were “around” when Xanga was “THE” website that came to mind when social networking and blogging were mentioned. For some of us, the “internet” and “Xanga” are synonyms. For some, Xanga is a joke and a hasbeen. There are a lot of blogs nobody knows about however. And sometimes those blogs are the “real” backbone of “the blogging community.” Xanga is you. Xanga is me.

    Xanga is Stacey Knapp.

Friday, 16 March 2001 Stacey Starts a Xanga Blog.  Sigh, I guess this is as good a time as any to begin a new weblog. Today at my job of six and a half years, my boss brought me outside and told me that Wednesday will be my last day.

Saturday, 17 March 2001 Stacey Wins the Lottery. Thank God. I sat home all day (this Dreary Saturday) watching movies…. and at 8:00, I turned on the lottery drawing…. I WON!! $259!

Monday, 28 May 2001 Stacey Gets a Job. So, since May 3rd, I’ve been working in medical records for a home health care agency. I LOVE the people I am working with…the “perks” that the job offers. Air Conditioning, when you have asthma as bad as I do, you dread the extreme seasons. All the over time I want, (not forced) at time and a half! Days off!…Parties, birthday and baby shower for co-workers. THANK YOU CARDS! I got a card thanking me for my efforless energy!
Wow, that knocked my socks off!

Saturday, 15 September 2001 Stacey Gets Philosophical After 9/11. It is so true that we as americans have lost our sense of community. With the internet, we now have a global community, and may be closer to someone living on the other side of the world then we are to someone living on the other side of the street.

Wednesday, 30 January 2002  Stacey Blogs About her Health Problems. At 6:00 am Tuesday, I decided I needed to go to the hospital. I went to the ER, and they immediately gave me an IV, and then a breathing treatment.

Sunday, 12 May 2002 Stacey and Her Friends Hang Out. I had a lot of fun yesterday. I took Kristin, (My best friend in the world) Nelson, Jill, and Elizabeth on a tour of Monmouth County.

Saturday, 22 June 2002 Stacey’s Father Retires on His Birthday! Last night my father retired after 38 years with the same company. Today is his 60th Birthday. Happy B-day dad.

Saturday, 14 September 2002 Stacey Discusses Her Asthma and Surmises She’ll Never Bear Children.  I have VERY bad asthma, I’ve had it since I was 18 months old, and I’ve been in the hospital 5 times in the past 10 years, (3 of those in intensive care) because of my asthma. If I were to get pregnant, some of the medications I take have warnings about taking them because they can cause all kinds of problems in unborn children.

Thursday, 05 December 2002 The Computer Eats Stacey’s Blog. Damn! I just wrote anice long blog, and it’s gone. Did the computer eat it or Xanga? Damn!

Monday, 24 March 2003 Stacey Blogs About Her Weight. Alright, folks. Confession time here. Not really a confession, just a fact. I’ve been blogging for two years and there is something most of you don’t know about me. I’m a fat girl. Not, “ooh, I need to lose 10 lbs.” fat. I’m fat, fat.

Saturday, 13 September 2003  The Guys in Stacey’s Life. So, on the Sam front. I heard the phone ringing, and I picked it up…I saw who was calling and I started shaking. I hit ignore and threw the phone back into my purse. I Gave Sam more than he’ll ever know, I gave him my heart, and my soul. And he calls me out of the blue like that?…For Months, I prayed hoped, wished, that he would call me, But to call like that? No way. I mean, now I’ve been with Fred since July 7th, and even in the beginning I hoped Sam would Call. Fred may be far from perfect, but at least he’s there. I see him 2-3 times a week, and we talk on the phone every day.

Tuesday, 07 October 2003 Stacey and Fred. 3 months ago today, I met Freddie in the flesh. Our relationship is definitely a study in contrasts. It is awesome (I think) how we started off on shaky ground, and it has grown into something solid and real. I really love this man.

Saturday, 04 September 2004  Stacey Expresses Her Faith. You may have noticed a change in me.  I haven’t touched a drop of alcohol in 11 months and 1 week, I don’t spend my time idly anymore.  I spend a lot of time in Church and fellowshipping with the Saints.  Publick ministry is a high priority. I know the end is near, and someone cared enough to share with me what I am about to share with you.  I care because I have the Lord Jesus Christ living inside me.

Saturday, 18 June 2005 Stacey gets married.

Sunday, 21 August 2005 Stacey shares photos After the Wedding. On the 4 train after our wedding on our way back to the Ferry Terminal.  My Parents FIRST TIME on the subway.

Wednesday, 28 September 2005 Stacey’s 2nd Born Again birthday. Happy Birthday to ME! 2 years ago today I was saved.  Born Again.

Saturday, 17 September 2005  A Quiet Evening at Home. Dinner is done.. I didn’t burn it so that was a blessing. Fred is laying on the floor reading and giving me sweet compliments. How’d I land him?

Thursday, 15 September 2005 Stacey Deals With an Antagonistic Blogger. Mona, If you are so seemingly upset by what I have to say, if you are so against what I believe you don’t have to visit my blog.

Friday, 07 October 2005 Stacey Might be Pregnant! Fred was just in the bathroom checking my pregnancy test. Results in about 2 minutes

Saturday, 08 October 2005 False alarm. Psalm 127:3 Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward. Thank you Lord for your will.  No baby

Monday, 17 October 2005 Stacey Posts Photos of Her Parents. Mommy Me and Daddy.. All the wonderful photos from my wedding day and there is not a one of me and Daddy. He was the one behind the camera in the majority of them.

Saturday, 25 March 2006 A Coworker Passes Away. I had a coworker die last week, 36 years old 3 kids, she was the “picture of health” dropped dead of a massive heart attack. You never know when your time is up.

Sunday, 09 April 2006 Photo Challenge From @Ladyblue1 This weeks photo challenge is hosted by @ladyblue1. Her subject is Candid Camera. Definition: 1.Free from prejudice; impartial.  2.Characterized by openness and sincerity of expression; unreservedly straightforward.

Saturday, 17 June 2006  SOLDIER IN THE LORD’S ARMY Last night we went to Times Square.  We had 300 Da Vinci code tracts to hand out outside a theater on 42nd Street.  After we went into the train station and handed out about 300 more tracts, and 20 CD Tracts. Fred is starting a job on Monday, Wednesday was our one year wedding anniversary.

Sunday, 18 June 2006  Today is My Parents 40th Wedding Anniversary!  It is also my Dad’s 38th Fathers day!  Two of my older sisters are flying to FL to visit, one day I’ll make it.  I miss my Mommy and Daddy

Monday, 31 July 2006 Stacey’s Announcement. Fred said to me the other day, “Tests have been done, and studies have shown that if a woman cries throughout her pregnancy, the baby will come out naked.” P.S. We’re pregnant.

Tuesday, 15 August 2006 Stacey’s Pregnant. As of right now, I am seven weeks pregnant.  So said the ultrasound on Thursday.  But based on my last cycle, I am further along.  Which is why I have to go to a Radiologist today to have another ultrasound done to determine dates.  I also have a pulmonologist appointment.  Pray for us.

Monday, 21 August 2006  Stacey’s Miscarriage. We’ve begun to lose the Baby.  However, I have complete peace about it.  the LORD knows best.

Wednesday, 01 November 2006 Christianity and Accountibility. I find it scary when a Christian gets, “caught” that he always blames the Devil.  Never willing to take responsibility for his own actions.  It is much easier to say, “See how the Devil works?”  Isn’t that what Eve did?
Don’t you think it truly grieves the LORD when we not only “do what we get caught doing” but then we lie about it?…It makes us hypocrites.  It is a whole lot easier to blame the devil, but be a man!  Admit it.
Just something that has been on my mind as of late.

Friday, 15 December 2006  Stacey’s Sinus Thing. JOY,  So I’ve found out why for the past month I have not been able to beat this sinus thing, why I can barely swallow or talk. I have (shudder) polyps in my sinuses and nose.  Doc doesn’t know what causes them says usually recurring infections.  SO I’ve been on a stereroid since Wednesday, and I already feel a ton better

Thursday, 01 March 2007  Stacey Gets Anxious. I am having such severe anxiety right now…I have this tightness in my chest, and throat.  My surgery is scheduled for April 25th, and someone at church last night said, “Oh, that kind of surgery could kill  you”  That isn’t what is even causing my anxiety that is just the topper.  Worst case scenario, death…. To be with Jesus is far better.

Friday, 27 April 2007 NOT FOR THE SQUEAMISH I had my surgery on Wednesday. I have not sneezed yet since my surgery I am afraid to sneeze.

Monday, 17 September 2007 Stacey Answers a Featured Question. How do You Define Yourself? How does your opinion compare to what others think of you? I am a Christian.  (literally Christ One)  I follow Christ and his word.  I tell others about him, and his saving grace. I know people think I’m odd, diferent, but the bible says Jesus’ disciples counted themselves worthy to suffer shame for his name.  He died on a cross for me, and for all.  I know he is worthy of being served, even if people think I’m a fool. I’m a fool for Jesus.  Who’s fool are you?

Friday, 11 January 2008  SHORT TIMER 3 weeks left at my job of nearly 7 years.
Bittersweet. I’m excited about the move TO GEORGIA!

Thursday, 07 February 2008 Stacey Moves to Georgia. Home They say home is where you hang your hat.  My one hat is packed and the movers have it so home is in a storage place in Stamford CT? They also say, “Home is where your Heart is”  Well, my heart is beating in my chest right here in Albany, GA.

Sunday, 11 May 2008  A Very Happy Mothers Day We had a child go home to be with the LORD in August 2006, well, we found out yesterday that we are expecting again.

Wednesday, 04 June 2008 Recap: Georgia to Maine and a Trip Back Home ◦Thursday May 15th: Go day.  Ready to hit the road.  I thought we’d leave by 10AM at the latest, we left after 2. ◦Pregnancy = many potty stops along the way.◦Made it to our Destination in Maine after midnight. Saturday, 14 June 2008 Woo-Hoo Today is Our 3 Year Wedding Anniversary. The turns we’re taken, the things we’ve been through. I’ve been having some discomfort in my belly since this evening.  I don’t know what is ‘normal’ since I didn’t carry the last baby this far before the LORD took it home.

Sunday, 29 June 2008 Stacey’s Morning Sickness. I threw up during Sunday School. I threw up during Morning Preaching. We went to lunch Came home, took a nap.  Threw up after nap.

Monday, 07 July 2008 Five Years Ago
Five years ago today I met my husband.
What a whirlwind it has been.
We’ve had our share of ups
and more than our share of downs.
We have a child in heaven.
    And one on the way.
We go to the Dr tomorrow for our first “official” ultrasound.
    I love you baby.

Sunday, 14 September 2008 My Husband Is a very intelligent, God Fearing Man, but sometimes he is a little boy trapped in an adult’s body.  I do not mean this disrespectfully. We have a plethora (okay maybe not a plethora – 7) of stuffed Elmos. (yes the furry red monster from Sesame Street) Fred you see, likes to wrestle with them…WELL, HIS DAUGHTER (See, she’s already in trouble so she’s HIS) – is mimicking that feeling.  I told him it felt like he was inside me wrestling with the Elmos.

Thursday, 18 September 2008 Fred Got a New Laptop Yesterday.  This is the innagural shot with the new webcam. Fred just said I look like I’m 6’8″. For the record… I am 4’11″ he is 5’9″  He is sitting, I am not.

Thursday, 18 September 2008 Pregnancy Questions.
•Why do my feet look like large baked potatoes?  I’m drinking a generous amount of water but I am SO swollen. My sneakers even hurt.
•Is it normal (this is a weird one) that the skin on my lower abdomen feels “thicker” and almost “rubbery”?
•Why am I hormonal and weepy again?  I thought I was done with that.
•Will I ever be comfortable at night again?

Wednesday, 01 October 2008  Prayer Request. My Mom and Dad are still in NJ (They moved to FL 3 years ago, and are up there for a visit) I got a phone call tonight on the way to Church.  My Dad is in the hospital he had a stroke Friday, a “deep brain bleed” they called it.  They waited until he could speak to call me. He told me. They say he is really doing much better.

Monday, 20 October 2008 Stacey Blogs About Depression.
    i’ve never been clinically diagnosed
    i know i suffer
i have had “black hole” days where i don’t get out of bed
i have had days where I don’t eat
    i am scared
i am 7 months pregnant, and I am going through it
i don’t want my daughter to have to suffer
i don’t know if it is hereditary
i don’t want to talk to anyone
    (yet I’m blogging about it)
i have all the lights off
    i have a bad headache
    i cry too much
i am a Christian.  i am supposed to have joy
but saying a Christian shouldn’t be depressed, is like saying a Christian shouldn’t have cancer.
    it happens.
    please pray for us

Monday, 01 December 2008 Stacey In Hiding. I’m still technically “hiding” but I have 35 days left until my due date, and since I don’t know where my journal is, I need to document here…..

Thursday, 04 December 2008 Stacey Shows Off Her Baby Bump. I’m 35 weeks 3 days pregnant and have not posted a single “belly” photo.  I gained 90 lbs after my miscarriage in 2006, (which I was planning on losing before I got pregnant but didn’t happen) I’ve only gained 11lbs this pregnancy, but look much bigger…

Saturday, 03 January 2009 Stacey’s Expecting in Four Days.
◦Today I was super “crampy” feeling
◦My back started to ache like you wouldn’t believe while I was standing at the sink doing dishes
◦Lydia has been moving like crazy
◦I was CONVINCED I was going to go to the hospital.
◦I put my bag and pillows in the car when we went out at 6:30 this evening
    ◦Nada.
◦I got sick after we came home.
◦I brought my pillows and meds in
◦Left the bag in the car.
◦4 days until my due date.

Wednesday, 07 January 2009 Regardless of What My Ticker Says Lydia is Not Here Yet. I was having contractions every 5 minutes for about an hour yesterday, and then they just stopped.  Like they forgot there’s a baby in there. I’m so anxious to hold her. And as mean as it sounds, anxious to get the physical pain out of the way.I’ve heard, “The thought of the pain is worse than the actual pain.”  Maybe so, but I want to get it done with and hold our little girl.

Tuesday, 13 January 2009  Lydia Enters The World. It’s Aunt Jody here.  Lydia Hope has arrived!  She arrived at 12:46 and weighed in at 7lbs 14oz.  Mommy and baby are healthy and pictures will be posted as soon as I get one.

Wednesday, 18 March 2009 Stacey’s One Huge Fear. One huge fear I have is that Lydia will have asthma.  I have severe asthma.  I was diagnosed at 15 months of age, and hospitalized 3 times by the time I started school.  I was on medication regularly and had many trips to the emergency room.  When I got to high School (I had to be cool) I started smoking.  At the age of 18 I was hospitalized my senior year in H.S. The day after Thanksgiving.  I was hospitalized again in the spring.  This pattern followed for 10 years.  At 20, 22, 24, 26, 28 I was hospitalized twice a year, and I had frequent ER visits in between at the very least 3 times a year.

Saturday, 09 May 2009 One Year Ago Tonight I went to bed knowing that I would wake up and take a pregnancy test. I had no idea how much different my life wouild be today. We had a miscarriage in August 2006.  Last year May 10th was a Saturday.  I went to a Mother/Daughter Breakfast with our church ladies.  By the time I got there EVERYONE knew I was pregnant.

Thursday, 17 September 2009 Stacey Moves to Florida. I’m alive! We moved 15 days ago. We JUST got our internet hooked up!  I have nearly 2,000 emails to sort through, as well as still trying to unpack with a crawling 8 month old.  I will do my best to catch up on everyones blogs.

Monday, 26 July 2010  Sister Jody Begins Chemotherapy. My sister started her chemo today.  She is on the two strongest chemo medications available.  They told her she will lose her hair within 3 weeks, hair will grow back.

Wednesday, 27 October 2010 Fred Needs Gallbladder Surgery. so…. we ended up at the ER on Monday night, and Fred is now recovering from gallbladder surgery.  Any thing else for us?

Wednesday, 29 December 2010 Lydia Turns Two. I can not believe That in 2 weeks and one day, I will have a 2 year old!  Where did the time go?  She is so adventurous.  No less than 5 times in the past 3 weeks did I anticipate having to take her to the ER for either running full speed off the bed, standing on a chair and falling over, hugging the TV (don’t ask).  She is such a spitfire!

Wednesday, 16 March 2011 Stacey’s 10th Xangaversary Post. 10 years ago.  I had just left my dead end job at the deli – I had no idea what my future had in store for me.   3 states later, 1 miscarriage, 2 relationships 1 beautiful toddler, 7 years in health care, 2 cars, 100 lbs lost and gained, switched from diet pepsi to diet coke (haha), stopped dying my hair after 14 years, lost friends, reunited with old ones, made many lifetime ones. Thanks for the trip Xanga.  I’m still along for the ride!

Thursday, 14 April 2011 Urgent Prayer Request We will be leaving FL and headed to NYC in a few hours.  We got a call that my MIL is in a coma.

Tuesday, 26 April 2011  Stacey’s MIL today Fred’s mom will be removed from life support.

Monday, 01 August 2011 This Was Lydia Last Week while we were waiting for friends at Starbucks

Monday, 08 August 2011  Sad News About A Xanga Friend Just found out that one of my Xanga friends that I met while I was expecting Lydia passed away last month.  :(   http://dulcilee.xanga.com/ She had transplant Surgery in May 2009.

Wednesday, 16 November 2011 Stacey Prepares to Relocate. We’re moving.  On Saturday.  That is right.  3 days from now I will be cleaning like crazy and hopefully everything will be in the cars/truck.  We will drive 375 miles or so to Ocala and spend the night at my parent’s house.  We have secured our new apartment and I hope it is as nice as it looks.  HUGE NEWS!  I will have a Washer and Dryer!

Wednesday, 30 November 2011 ”Lydisms” When she can’t find her bepper (the cloth diaper she used as a security blanket) “Where’s the Bepper?” When she finds it “OH!, I found Bepper!”

Sunday, 25 December 2011 Fred Breaks His Arm. Fred broke his arm on December 4th, so the past 3 weeks have been a lot of sleeping, and pain and struggle and MD appointments. December 20th he had surgery to repair the break, he stayed 2 nights in the hospital and came home on Thursday the 22nd. God has provided that we’ve been fed and everything.  SO Thankful for that! Fred goes back to the MD on Thursday, hopefully we’ll have some good news.  His boss has been INCREDIBLE in this whole situation!

Thursday, 19 January 2012  How Has Xanga Changed or Impacted Your Life? I have forged lifelong friendships with people I have met on Xanga.  I am so blessed because of it!  In March, I will have been here for 11 years.  I think back to 20 years ago and what we now take for granted as the internet was something so furturistic sounding.  I am so glad that Xanga has brought me and some close friends together

Saturday, 18 February 2012  Stacey Goes For a Ride. I’m not feeling that well but was glad to get out of the house.  We drove a couple of towns up to Juno Beach, FL.  We drove through Palm Beach and just looked at all the extravagance.  We stopped in Juno Beach at a playground and let Lydia run around for a while.  They had five different slides that she took advantage of.

Thursday, 23 February 2012  Nightmares! I had terrible, horrible, awful nightmares last night.  needless to say I didn’t sleep well. Last night when I was cooking dinner, Lydia came into my teeny kitchen and out of nowhere just reached up, held my hand and said, “Don’t worry Mama.”  Then went back to her Sesame Street DVD. She’s my everything on this earth.

Saturday, 17 March 2012 Xangaversary Yesterday was my 11 year Xangaversary!  I’ve changed quite a bit since I started blogging!

Tuesday, 08 May 2012  Stacey Enters Heaven. This is Jody, Stacey’s sister. As many of you know, we lost Stacey on Saturday.  We know that many of you would  not be able to make it to any services, but I just want to let everyone know that services are being held on Friday May 11th.

This blog entry is dedicated to the memory of Stacey Knapp, typical Xanga blogger, and to her daughter Lydia, her husband Fred, and her entire family and group of friends. Tired of the brouhahas du jour I always seem to find on Xanga’s “Front Page” and among the”featured” and “recommended” content, last week I found myself traveling the less well known virtual streets and boulevards of Xanga. I’ve met so many in eight years “here” and still am amazed at all those I have never encountered. I came across Stacey’s blog, directed perhaps by the Hand of God. I don’t believe I ever visited her when she was alive. There was the news that she had died. Many times when confronted with a “new blog to me”, I will make that blog my “project” and I will read it like one would a novel, from beginning to end. Stacey was one of those bloggers who has a long Xanga history, and has pretty much lived the last third of her life in her “pages”, I began to read those pages, and immerse myself in that life.

As I read Stacey’s blog, I wanted to distill her essence, and share her story. I copy/pasted the links to “benchmark entries” as well as “typical” blog entries. This has been an amazing process. Stacey has reached down from heaven and touched my soul deeply, through her blog. The “Chapter headings” are in some instances mine, and in some instances the titles of the entries from the blog. Sometimes I might have joined passages from either end of an entry, or chosen words from the middle of an entry. Each date is a link to the actual blog entry. Stacey began blogging at the age of 26. A lot of time in Stacey’s short life was spent giving her testimonial and bearing witness to her love of Jesus. She has shared her life, her hopes, her legacy. It’s all on her blog. Xanga is Stacey. Xanga is you. Xanga is me.

  • The “Community” will Disappear

This morning I was hit with another one of my epiphanies.

This one wasn’t personal, or even universal, for that matter. It’s a sliver of an epiphany, but it’s important.

My epiphany relates to Xanga, and all the discussion about Xanga 2.0.

It occurred to me that many of the Xangans I read, and have read, and who read me, who have shut down and resurrected their blogs multiple times, and those who have maintained the same blog for nearly 10 years or more, have done so without paying a cent to Xanga.

The “Xangans” who need the “community” are not the popular social set. They aren’t the movers and shakers. They never appeared on Top Blogs repeatedly. They aren’t the content providers, the trolls, the instigators. They aren’t poets, philosophers, or fools.

They are merely folks who have found Xanga a “place” to feel safe and share over the years, as they have grown up (or grown old), to take the place of the abuse, sadness, lonely times, losses, and otherwise unlucky and turbulent chaos that is our modern world.

Sure a lot of us are  PREMIUM, or LIFETIME members. We pay, year after year, or we paid upfront at one time to keep our blogs online for life. (never knowing that at any time Xanga could snuff that life and ask us to pay again for the resurrection, but that’s quite another story!) Those of us who have been vocal, or “popular” or who can claim to have large “readerships”.

Those of us who CAN pay, or WILL, or MIGHT.

We aren’t the “community” of Xanga. We may think we are, but we’re a small percentage of the millions of folks over the past nearly decade and a half, who use Xanga because it’s easy to use, and has become for them a “virtual diary” and meeting place. A place where they feel safe, unrestricted,

    free.

Whatever Xanga 2.0 is, it’s not going to be

    free.

And for those who flocked to this community, and have been flocking to it, no matter how often, no matter how sporadically. They will leave. They may not like Facebook. They may not want to sign up for “just another” blogging service again. They feel as if their last safe “home” has been invaded.

I really feel sad for this large part of the “Xanga Community”. My epiphany is that they may have found solace in turbulence, and now they will have to open the door, leave this safe haven, and return to the storm.

Good luck to you, the “faceless Xangan” who REALLY made this the “community” everybody’s been talking about. Because no matter what happens with Xanga 2.0, no matter how much money is raised, you simply will not be a part of something which has been a part of you for so long.

  • Remembering Xanga: Part 6: In Which I Thank my Readers

I would not like to “leave” Xanga, my blogging home for nearly a decade, without thanking the many “constant readers” I’ve enjoyed corresponding with during that time. My heart bursts with joy, and tears stream down my face (as they’re doing right this moment, I’m a sensitive, over emotional individual) when I think about the many connections I’ve made on Xanga. I’ve read comments, received messages, and carried on “conversations” in these pages which have helped me overcome extreme bouts of depression, which have calmed me down in times of stress, which have consoled me during those times when my friends all seem to have perished to the great hereafter, and which have made me laugh, cry, and marvel at the complexity and wonder of humankind.

I joined Xanga in the days when “Featured Content” was a list of five bloggers, usually the same ones. A typical comment was “props. comment me back.” It seemed like there were millions of people here, and maneuvering around this “place” could be a bit of a chore. I wasn’t a novice internetter, by any means. I was “invited” to join this blogging service by @Ladyblue, a member of my ElectricPoetry Group on Yahoo. I already wrote nearly half a dozen blogs, and maintained an already pretty large personal website. I always wanted to have some kind of social experience on the internet, and Xanga had what other blogging sites didn’t at the time: Comments.

I soon developed a core group of readers. My posts looked pretty much the same then as they do now. (It’s frightening, really). They were long. They had self made graphics. Essentially they were more webpages for my personal site, with full HTML coding. In those days, we made our own connections. There weren’t pages and pages of “top blogs.” That came a lot later. There were “movements” among certain Xangans to create “communities” to counter the meager offerings on the “front page.” The most famous “back in the day” would probably be NFC, or “non featured content.”  I joined a “blogring” called “Featured Content for Grownups” (usually called Featured Grownups.) It was a group of “older” folks, like me, designed to promote writing, creativity, and camaraderie. Soon I created my own blogring/group called “Internet Island” which I ran from my site, and then spun off into it’s own site. Other blogring/groups in which I was active in the mid aughts were “Socrates Cafe” and “Kween of the Queens.”

It’s amazing to think that there are still a lot of my readers whom I “met” through those groups, six to eight years ago! I consider myself a “content provider” and although I’ve made friends here, I am most inspired and thrilled when “my readers” comment on my work. A lot of folks have done that, and are still doing that. Sometimes I tend to forget for just how long.

The following list shows the usernames of 203 Xangans whom I have considered my “readers” over the past nearly nine years. When one makes a list, one is putting oneself in the crosshairs of possibly disappointing someone else who isn’t included in the list. I knew I would eventually compile a list of my “favorite readers.” I figured I’d just post 20 or 30 usernames, perhaps with some kind of personal thanks attached. Short, sweet, to the point.

But, hey, I’m me! When have I ever posted ANYTHING on Xanga, (or the internet in general, for that matter) of which I haven’t made a big production. It isn’t that I’m verbose (although I am). It isn’t that I try to be complete (and this I always do). I’m just a consummate researcher and chronicler of the human condition, and sometimes I think there is much too much to say, and I might not have the time to present what I believe to be a “finished” project.

Last night I went over my “ubox” list, marking down a few usernames. Then I began to go back through the actual entries themselves. There is no “order” here perhaps, with a nod that the list is somewhat chronological going back to the beginning, in 2004. I knew @Ladyblue would be the first (at the bottom) name on the list because she introduced me to the service. @Zeal4living would be the very first name, because we’ve possibly had the longest most continual connection. Special mention singles people out, and I’m a believer in “The Universality” of mankind, so I don’t like to play favorites. However, I do want to single out Liz (@The_Queen_Of_Swords) because our Xanga connection blossomed into friendship, and romance, and she’s still one of my dearest friends in the “real world”.

Where possible, I narrowed down multiple accounts by the same person to the last known username. In a break from “tradition” I’m just listing the usernames, and not the given names, mainly cause that would cause me to go on another long research mission to find the names of those I’ve forgotten.

I’ve connected with far more than 203 people. These are folks I’ve considered “readers.” In other words, they’d drop by to read and comment on a post when I wrote it. And they did it repeatedly, whether or not I visited them or not. I KNOW I left some people out. I tried to be as thorough as possible. I’ll use a graphic from “back in the day” when I used to give out the “bucket of eprops” award. So a big “bucket of eprops” goes out to my dedicated readership.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Please feel free to friend me. I’m getting more active on Facebook. If you do, please let me know who you are on Xanga!

My thoughts concerning the possible shutdown of Xanga and having to pay for future service can be found in my entry called “Dead Websites” HERE.

    happy

EDIT: 6/15/13 12noon pdt: We’re Number 1. (Whoops, should have put a few hash marks around that “We’re Number 1.” I thought adding the @symbol would bring some of you back here for a final look around as it were. I want to acknowledge that I know I got top of top blogs again, and it’s STILL the grandest experience I know on Xanga. Thank you for your comments and your recommends. Putting my “list” together was a trip through my (overflowing but completely indexed) archives and I relived some internet moments I’d forgotten through the sudden dips and turns of my life over the past five or six years, (all detailed on my Xanga.) I’ll attempt to at least complete my response to your comments personally. If Xanga 2.0 does come to pass, I want to see the interface before I pay any more money. However, as I understand it from The Xanga Team article announcing the possible shutdown, my blog will be completely ported over to the new servers because I’m a Lifetime Subscriber. Everything will stay online, so I’ll still have the archives from which to cull the links I make on the internet. 7/29/13 5:48am pdt. Thought I’d put this at the top of the queue. A nice thank you to my readers entry should be the “last” entry on my blog when the “xangapocalypse” happens, don’t you think?

7/30/13 3:25pm pdt: Besides Facebook, I’ve created an “interim website” at wix. http://michaelfnyiri.wix.com/allthingsmike I’ll add updates to that site as I figure out what I’m going to do “post Xanga” in the blogging world.

9:16pm pdt. I know. I’m updating the timestamp. So sue me. I find myself unable to go to bed right now. (It’s, well, I just timestamped it. Xangduh!) I’m wandering around the dusty “halls” of my old alma mater, Xanga High School, leaving possibly more comments than I have in a given night since 2008 or so. I have experienced the shutdown of numerous website hosts in the past decade. (I lost 8000 photos when Webshots closed down, plus my status as #6 most popular photographer for California photos.) I didn’t “network” there, however. Xanga has been home. I tried wordpress. THEY want me to pay to be able to create the kind of blog I want to create. So no blog for now. If by chance Xanga doesn’t turn the carriage back into a pumpkin, perhaps I’ll subscribe. Xanga has been a hotbed of controversy, and an offshoot of “reality TV” and tmz.com for a few years. But for me, I still remember the thrill of getting my first “featured” post, and garnering dozens of subscribers (lots listed above) from the late great blogrings. Sayonara, Ciao Baby, and Goodbye, my Xanga.

I will, shall, and always will remain,

Michael F. Nyiri, poet, philosopher, fool

  • The End of Blogging (as we know it)

It’s the end of the world as we know it.
It’s the end of the world as we know it.
It’s the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine… fine…

(It’s time I had some time alone,
It’s time I had some time alone,
It’s time I had some time alone
    I feel fine…)

by R.E.M. 1987 © Warner/Chappell Music, Inc. Image of me as Samson toppling my personal website first appeared in a Xanga blog entry in 2004.

It depresses me to go to the Xanga front page and see posts like:

I no longer see the point of blogging…

Over the past couple of years, “top blogs” contained a lot of “comment wars” about some “issue du jour.” Now that Xanga may join the ranks of the “dead websites”, the contents are divided between “let’s all get together and save the site” posts and “have we been wasting our time here over the past 14 years?” posts.

The writer isn’t one of my long time correspondents. I don’t think they subscribe to my sporadic postings, but I recognized the writer’s username from dozens of “top blog entries” during the last couple of times I’ve emerged from my many hiatuses. That a “popular blogger” is writing “is it really going to matter what you post on the internet…” , “what’s the point”, and “does anybody give a shit” (quoted from the entry) bothers me a lot. My heart goes out to this blogger, and the hundreds, perhaps thousands more, who, over the years, have gained a sort of “instant noteriety” or “fame” because of their connections and social networking acumen. One of the bloggers here on Xanga who does subscribe to my own blog wrote an entry decrying that they had no friends. Sort of like they were musing that if Xanga were to suddenly disappear, they would be totally alone.

Let me tell ya. I’m 60 years old. I’m totally alone. Parents died when I was in college. Estranged siblings. Three whole groups of friends dead, gone, or otherwise missing from my personal life. I’m sort of tired of “making new friends” only to see them disappear eventually, but hey, WE ALL DISAPPEAR eventually, and then we open the door to the Great Universal Consciousness, as I’ve written so many many times. At least I’m satisfied, even in lonliness, and with the prospect of yet ANOTHER social networking service disappearing (the internet didn’t even EXIST for most of the life I’ve led!) that at one time or another, be it in a blog entry, one of my patented novel sized comments, or even in a thought or inspiration I got from any one of the thousands of blog entries I’ve read on Xanga (Or on the Yahoo groups, or message boards, Or on Facebook, or in a book or poem, or the Bible or whathaveyou) that my meager life has not been wasted, and even though I, the blogger in question, and EACH AND EVERY ONE OF US who takes breath into our bodies during our short lives on this planet, may feel depressed and sad at times during these lives, these “downer” times can only help to make the “good times” even better.

I’m writing as a bipolar individual. I can experience higher highs and lower lows than most of the populace, so I know whereof I speak. Recently somebody else in my life passed away. I blogged about it. I wrote a poem expressing my thoughts, and emailed it to the family. (I won’t supply a link. It’s still on the front page of my Xanga blog.) When I attended the memorial service, I was overwhelmed with emotion when I was complimented on my poem. Even though I drove home alone, and felt a bit out of sorts at the time, the positivity I received from the experience gave me good tidings and even in grief, I felt that perhaps someone was consoled by something I wrote.

Last year I condensed the entire 10 year blogging experience of one blogger I didn’t know who died into a blog entry. titled “What is Xanga about.”  I actually read this woman’s complete blog. It took a long time, and it amazed me that I was given a peek into an existence I wouldn’t otherwise have happened upon. It could have been a blogger or wordpress blog. It doesn’t matter. Even when the pages we post on the internet disappear, sites like the Internet Archive let us look into the past, over all the words and all the old sites which have been screen captured for posterity.

PLEASE don’t shut down your internet activity. PLEASE don’t delete your Xanga blog because you’ve heard the site will disappear. I believe that the internet serves as a memorial for all of us. I may not be living in a decade. Heck, I could die tomorrow. Nothing is certain. That’s the trauma and the beauty of this life we share for the moment we are able to connect. It’s easy to archive all your posts. Takes me a couple of minutes and I’ve been doing it for nearly 10 years here. I’ve written millions of words on the internet, and perhaps some are overblown, and useless, and repetitive. It takes too long to read my blog entries. Yadda Yadda Yadda. But SOMETHING I’ve written matters to someone, and something you’ve written matters to someone. Perhaps it is only yourself, when you go over the comments you’ve received (which are archived along with your posts.) and see something somebody else you may NOT EVEN KNOW wrote in consolation, acceptance, or praise of YOU.

I just posted something else on the internet. I’m sure I’ll get five comments as usual. (What, only five comments?) But I don’t care. The experience of expressing myself is what matters to me. We are all family, as Sister Sledge once sang. Everything matters. And nothing matters. It’s all the same thing, if you really think about it!

    Is this the real life?
    Is this just fantasy?
    Caught in a landslide
    No escape from reality

    …Nothing really matters
    Anyone can see
Nothing really matters – nothing really matters to me

  • DirecTV vs. Dish: The gloves are off

    DirecTV vs. Dish

Recently I posted a modified version of the following on my Facebook page, and also on two FB groups to which I belong (including the Xangaforever group.)

Has anybody had experience with BOTH DirecTV and Dish television systems?

I’ve had DirecTV since 1996. (A year after the service was introduced.) On Sunday evening, June 2nd, the entire contents of my DVR, over 200 hours of programming, magically disappeared following a power outage. DVRs use hard drives, which can be corrupted. I immediately called DirecTV tech support with shaky hands. I was told there was nothing they could do for me. I’ll have to input all my shows again. I told them it would be a good time for them to upgrade me to the “Genie” DVR, which records 5 shows at a time and has a 1TB hard drive. They’ll do it, for $399.00. (They give the damn things away for free to new subscribers.) I “upgraded” to a 3D HD DVR in Dec. 2011, to take advantage of 3D programming which wasn’t offered on my older “top of the line” DVR from 2009. I understand that technology changes, but as far as I’m concerned, longtime customers should have first chance at new offers in hardware, when the devices are blatantly advertised not only on the front page of the company website, but on the “personal ad feeds” throughout my google and yahoo (and Facebook) pages.

I spend roughly $100.00 a month for all premium programming, in HD. I rent their pay per view film offerings.

Following the meager customer service I was offered at DirecTV, I took a look at the Dish website. I’d heard a lot of negative feedback about Dish over the years, but there sure are a lot of folks in the mobile home estates where I live who have switched over. I look over the housetops and see more Dish than DirecTV dishes. And I see a lot of discarded DirecTV satellite dishes in their back yards! Looks like I can get the same programming for roughly the same price. ($119.00 a month including all premium channels) plus Dish will give me a Hopper DVR (which has more storage than DirecTV’s Genie, records up to 6 programs at a time, and skips commercials entirely on selected programs.) and $30.00 off monthly programming for a year! They’ll also throw in “Blockbuster Online” which is sort of like Netflix for three months, and it’s $10.00 a month after that.

I’d heard Dish was unreliable, but looks like I can save money as a new subscriber, and DirecTV doesn’t seem to care if I’m alive.
I posted this on all my FB groups and on my own wall, asking for any and all feedback.  Any posts to DirecTV’s FB page about problems seem to magically disappear as soon as I posted them. To be fair, there were as many folks who liked Dish as liked DirecTV. In 2013, both systems are pretty much “equal” as far as programming and support.

I perused dozens of “comparison” articles on trade websites, (making sure they were written in 2013). I looked over message boards. I even found a FB group called ‘DirecTV vs. Dish”. Two “testimonials” on that site pretty much sold me on switching, since other longtime DirecTV subscribers were getting upset with their overall DirecTV experience. I gave DirecTV three chances to keep me as a customer. Besides calling on the Friday evening I lost my content, I called on Wednesday and this last Friday. I even asked for a ‘loyalty’ department. (Somebody on FB suggested that.) All I got was “sorry, we’re sad to see you go.”

Directv wouldn’t upgrade my DVR to a Genie for free. They STILL wanted 400 bucks. (Only “gimme” was a $50.00 “credit”.)

Dish has gotten a lot better in the past couple of years with more HD content, more channels, better customer service, and the “Hopper” which is an amazing DVR!

I told Directv on Friday night I was about to jump ship. I told them they would give me a free Genie as soon as I signed my two year contract with Dish. They didn’t want to help. Sayonara.

My new Dish system was installed Saturday morning. It only took two technicians an hour and a half. DirecTV had to install their satellite dish in my yard, cause it was too big to put on the roof of an older mobile home like mine. Dish’s dish is smaller, and it’s mounted on the roof. I called Directv to cancel. I was told I could get the Genie for free NOW that I was cancelling. I told them I’d already given them three chances. And I was enjoying my new “Hopper”.

I think perhaps the last guy I talked to at DirecTV will be fired, judging by the comments the “supervisor” imparted looking over my call log history. Even after the “supervisor” kept me on the phone for almost as long as the whole installation process for the Dish had taken (not entirely true but I told her that and also that my phone battery was going dead.)) I wasn’t going to budge. “Send me a shipping container for the corrupted DVR.” I told her. I’ll pay my final bill using my Wells Fargo bill pay. What I heard next nearly caused a heart attack!

The kicker: I was told I was going to be charged $120.00 for “early cancellation” even though the DVR is probably corrupted. (And they don’t even want their super large satellite dish back either. I can remember when I had to pay nearly $100.00 for those in the 90s.) I told this “supervisor” I was going to tell all my FB friends, AND everyone on my “popular blogging service” about how Directv really SUCKS. “What can you do to negate this charge nobody told me about back in 2011?” Nothing. Nada. She said they’d use the card I had on file to charge me this “hidden” charge (bear in mind the DVR might be BROKEN!) 20 days after my cancellation.

I just went to my account page on DirecTV. At least my monthly payment for June was magically reduced from $109.00 to $58.00.

Now I just have to cancel my debit card and get another from my bank (a headache, but easily done) so they don’t have anything on file. I’ll pay my last payment thru Wells Fargo bill pay.

The upside. Dish is pretty great. I’m fairly tech savvy, but I’ve already “learned” the Hopper machine, interface, and the remote. The picture is just as sharp as Directv. Full 1080p when broadcast. The Hopper records the whole block of “prime time” programs each night, so I will be able to “catch up” on those episodes of favorite shows I lost (including final season episodes for at least four series.) when they are rebroadcast. One thing Dish DOESN’T tell you on their advertising is that the “commercial skip” feature is NOT included on ALL prime time network programming. Actually very few programs that I saw in my “prime time unlimited” block of programming allowed the skip feature.

Of course this past weekend the weather sucked almost as much as my recent customer service experience with DirecTV. If it’s nice next weekend, I won’t even be watching TV, I’ll be out of the house!

DirecTV vs. Dish: The Winner? Dish.

    (for now, at least…)

  • Remembering Xanga: Part 5: Top Blog Comment String

    topblogcomments

I’ve been posting some of my humorous Xangacentric entries over the past week or so, in remembrance of when I was a lot more active on this service. The “Top Blog comment string” shot to the top of top blogs back on September 26th, 2010.

Have you ever noticed that sometimes it seems you are reading the same comment string over and over again. Especially if you get your kicks from reading the top of the top blogs comment strings.

Well, I thought I’d save you the trouble, and I’ve created, in the spirit of those old Mad Magazine parody generic magazine articles that were popular back when I was in school, a “generic Top Blog comment string.” Now this isn’t specific to any one blogger. Most of the comment strings are somewhat interchangeable. In no way are any of the Xangan usernames supposed to be parroting any “real” Xanga usernames. (Let’s see how long it takes this entry to be noticed in the Xangasphere. I’ll be watching Boardwalk Empire and Dexter, then I’ll come back to check my own comment string. ) Sometimes, like with the Xangapediaposts or the Xanxiety comix, I’ve hit on something which the “general population” of Xanga (who are NOT sheep, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise) seem to flock to, er, I mean, enjoy.

So, lets say you’ve read the Top Blog, you’ve made your opinion or observation, and now you want to read the comments above yours.

The reason everyone is upset is quite simple to ascertain. Sometimes people don’t listen. Sometimes people don’t understand. In any case, it’s all good.

It really depends on the situation. If nobody knows what’s happening, then the car could swerve into the other lane and cause an accident.

    Dear Xangan,
It is my considered opinion that whatever stance one seems to take, someone is going to get hurt. Although the prose is perfection, and the poetry is verbose, the usual suspects cannot be trusted.I can remember back about 42 years ago this happened to me. I was not only upset, but I had to get out of traffic and take a breather.

The discussion will never end, and we will all go to our graves, like most of my buddies did. Rock on. You’re always good for a laugh. :)  Click here to visit my personal website. Don’t be such a stranger. I write lots of comments. Yadda yadda yadda. Blah Blah Blah.

  • News and Notes for June 2013

Omigod! I haven’t written one of these columns since March. Here’s a quick rundown as of today, June 4th, 2013.

HEALTH, DIET, EXERCISE: I waited two years after losing over 30 pounds to buy any new pants, and I did that yesterday. (Not bad, either . 3 pairs of Target’s “Merona” brand dress slacks at $15.00 each. I think that’s less than the same type cost when I last bought some four or five years ago.) Size (drumroll please) 34-30!! I’ve been wearing older 40-30 pants belted to the nines and some REALLY older jeans slacks that I hadn’t been able to fit into for years. Today I’m going into work with some really comfortable new slacks. Next up, some medium shirts to replace all the large shirts I purchased back in 2009 when I ballooned up to nearly 200 pounds. Reason I waited till now to buy the pants….I was so afraid I’d gain the weight again, and would feel stupid not being able to fit into clothes I just bought.

I’ve been going out to restaurants every other weekend or so, and sometimes I tend to gain, but I don’t eat the mammoth meals I used to. I’ve trained myself not to stuff myself, which wasn’t really an easy thing for me. I’m cooking more. In fact, my “Cooking With Mike” series of recipes always get a few “likes” on Facebook. I don’t eat three meals a day, but I do have a definite “lunch” and “dinner” time now. I’m going “out” for lunch at work, taking my lunchbucket to the park nearest where I work, and enjoying some instant noodles, sandwich, and banana while I read my Kindle. Dinner is usually one of my salad concoctions.

I’m getting ready to upgrade my weight training again. This will be the third time since I bought the bench and began training in earnest in February. Next year, when I finally have enough money to build the screened in porch at the side of the house, I’m going to get more gear. The bench is stuffed in my smallish living room right now. I’m using 30 pounds for my calves/thighs, 40 pounds for the barbell, and 15 pound dumbbells. My regimen includes eight exercises. Each exercise contains 15 reps (repetitions) in two sets, with a 30 second rest step between sets. The whole regimen takes about 90 minutes, including the power walk for cardio and the stretching exercises.

I still have quite a bit of a “spare tire” and will hopefully be seeing my abs (The Mikester with a six pack, oh my!) sometime this coming fall or winter.

WEALTH: I hate to say it. I’ve accumulated some more debt, but it’s manageable. For a couple of months, I was able to pay off my two credit cards down to zero each month, but I “splurged” a bit on my vacation. (Hey, you only turn 60 once in your life, so have some fun, eh?) I’ve been buying some blu ray DVD box sets, which even on sale, and in multiple quantities, add up pretty quickly. Then there’s those Kindle “books” which seem to cost about $12.00 each. I’m at a “frugal” point right now, and my payments for each CC are way over and above the minimum payments. That 40 grand consolidation debt I’ve written about endlessly, which was established in 2007, is down to under $8000.00 now and will be completely paid off by March of next year.

SOCIAL LIFE: Still single. Still alone. But not usually lonely. I almost thought I had “reconnected” with an old friend from my druggie days back in the early 70s through Facebook when I got another “friend request” from someone I hadn’t thought about in years, but like most of those reconnections I get on FB, the person doesn’t “update” and hadn’t posted anything on their wall in ages. I am collecting a few more “internet friends” through the FB site, and I’m posting more over there (I actually use Facebook more than Xanga, if I use the internet at all for social networking these days.) I’m still getting my financial world in order, and once that’s done (the magic year of 2014, if I don’t die or some other unforseen circumstance first, LOL) I’ll try to concentrate on perhaps finding a mate or at least a buddy to hang out with.

XANGA AND THE INTERNET: If the Xanga service survives, my archives will stay online. If they don’t I’ll eventually port them over to another service. Anyone who “reads” me already knows “where” to find me on the internet. (Last time I googled myself, I came up with 25,000 results!) Unlike most bloggers, my Xanga blog has always been pretty much a “storage facility” for numerous artistic and creative endeavors, posted as they’re created. I’m not really too “active” like folks who never seem to “leave” the blogging world.

I already suffered the “loss” of my 8000 photos stored on Webshots when that site went belly up. I’ve got a Flickr account on which I’m slowly reposting my themed folders, but it takes a lot of time I’m just not too interested in investing. (I posted an entry earlier this week here on Xanga where I listed a lot of the failed website communities with which I’ve been involved over the past decade.) Unlike most of the bloggers on Xanga I’ve read who seem to feel as if Xanga closing down is akin to having their home town being blown away by a tornado (the “image du jour” seems to be the sinking of the Titanic) I’m of the mind that it’s just another website to me.

I did look over the idea of perhaps learning wordpress (the program, not the blog hosting service) and re-invigorating my personal website (which has been pretty much a “legacy site” with no updates for two years, even though it costs me $250.00 a year to keep it online. It would take too much time to invest at this point in learning how to code another platform. Website tools cost money too. I can (techspeak coming up) create a MySql database on www.allthingsmike.com, but again, I’m not sure I want to spend a lot of time learning another language, as it were. The program I used to create allthingsmike, by the way (Dreamweaver), cost me over $500.00 back in 2003. I can’t even use it anymore. In fact, upgrades to my video editing program need at least Windows Vista, and I’m still on the creaky XP system.

PHILOSOPHY: Events in life are like a series of rows of dominoes. Each time you tip the first one over, the rest in the row fall down. Then you have to place some more dominoes in a row, and tip them over.

    Over and over again.
If you just keep tipping over short rows, all you have is a bunch of fallen dominoes.
Or you can build a massive single or connected row of dominoes, which takes a long long time. It’s a massive undertaking, and when you tip the first one, they eventually fall too, but it looks fantastic, and you feel as if you have a sense of accomplishment.
The end result is the same, of course. Now you have a LOT of fallen dominoes.
My domino rows have always been the massive long interconnected types. I’ve seen quite a few fall down. I’m still constructing my latest massive string of dominoes. They’re not ready to fall yet.
