Buddy Holly Tribute Post: 2007
Charles Hardin Holley (September 7, 1936 – February 3, 1959), better known as Buddy Holly, was an American singer, songwriter, and a pioneer of rock and roll. The change of spelling of "Holley" to "Holly" came about because of an error in a contract he was asked to sign, listing him as Buddy Holly. That spelling was then adopted for his professional career. The original spelling of "Holley" was engraved on his headstone (see photo).
Buddy Holly is considered one of the most influential founding fathers of rock 'n roll. In 2004, Rolling Stone Magazine ranked him #13 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.[1]. Although his career was cut short, his body of work is considered among the best in rock music history. His music would influence not only many of his recording contemporaries, but also the future direction music would take. (Copied from the Wikipedia article)

The centerpiece photo I bought at Buddy Holly Days in Lubbock, Texas, in 1980, and I featured it alone on a blog article in 2005, when I wrote the poem immediately below. I still get lots of hits on that photo from Google and Yahoo photo searches. I was told it was taken the evening of the Clear Lake, Iowa concert, the night before the plane crash in which Buddy, Richie Valens, and the Big Bopper perished. Waylon in the poem below later became country superstar Waylon Jennings (1937-2002)

The concert in Clear Lake that night was grand,
Everybody cheered, and enjoyed the music
All the guitars twanged with eloquence,
and everyone's voice soared high
Nobody danced much during Buddy's set
Even though the concert was a Dance Party
They just wanted to hear him sing
The tour itself had been gritty, and behind schedule
Tommy and Waylon were replacing the Crickets
Who stayed home this trip
Joe, Jerry, and Sonny
Mulling over their decision.
Tommy, Waylon, and Buddy
had rented a plane to get to Fargo early
So they could wash their dirty clothes
Ahead of the next night's performance.
After the concert
Most of the guys were gonna be on the tour bus
Noisy and unheated in the winter cold,
But the Bopper and Richie had traded seats
With Waylon and Tommy before the concert.
Waylon didn't care,
The tour was a new and exciting experience for him
And he didn't mind the idea of taking the bus.
Somebody noticed that Buddy
Hadn't sang his new hit,
"It Really Doesn't Matter Anymore".
He'd called Maria that night
But didn't tell her he was flying.
The drive to the Mason City Airport was unevenful.
A young kid of only 21 who was scheduled
To take the next day off agreed to
Fly the plane to Fargo.
Buddy, Richie and the Bopper strapped themselves in
Roger, the pilot hadn't been certified for
Flying by instruments alone.
The plane disappeared into the night
And the winter cold was unforgiving
Nobody knows exactly what happened next
Over the horizon and into the blackness of night
The plane disappeared.
And the music died that morning.
The "Buddy Holly Shrine" from 1980, hanging on my bedroom wall.
(BEHIND THE POETRY: Charles Hardin "Buddy" Holly was merely 23 years old when he perished in that fatal plane crash the morning of February 3rd, 1959, the day the Music Died. Unlike his idol and peer, Elvis Presley, Buddy was an accomplished songwriter as well as musician and singer. His songs still stand out as some of the best poetry of the rock and roll era. Rest In Peace, Buddy. Yours was a meteoric career trajectory that crashed far too soon, in that Iowa cornfield. We miss you, and shed a tear every February 3rd.

Yours truly in front of the Buddy Holly statue in Lubbock, Texas in 1980. Buddy was born in the town of Lubbock, and they celebrate his birth every year in September. (I'm wearing a Dave Edmunds T-Shirt. Dave had a hit in 1971 with "I hear You Knocking" and was a part of the band Rockpile with Nick Lowe in the late 70s and 80s.) I have every song Buddy recorded on vinyl, including some rare early pressings of albums on the "Coral" label.

I heard his music growing up, but somehow didn't really know who he was for a long time. Of course, I've learned more about the music of our generation from my son than I ever knew at the time. I do know I always liked his music and still do.
