"The Copper Locket" A Short Story
"The Copper Locket"
A "Blogstory" by Michael F. NyiriShe sat forward with a jolt. Birds in the distance warbled in song, as if they were chirping for the first time. Her eyesight, failing for decades, seemed to be sharper. She looked straight ahead and focused on the lace curtains blowing almost wistfully in the warm summer breeze. She could make out the stitching. The curtain on the left was slightly yellowed.
Suddenly Phyllis was awash in sweet, rich memories of Howard, her late husband. Howard had passed to the hereafter many years ago. How many? She wasn't exactly sure, but she knew the hole in her heart where his enduring love had resided for all of the time of their marriage had been empty for some time.
Her aged yet still somewhat smooth fingers reached instinctively for the faded copper locket around her neck. Howard had given it to her in 1951 as a seventh wedding anniversary present. The outside was burnished with age, and the etched curlicues which used to be a deep black were so close to the surface that they had almost disappeared. Her index finger scraped lovingly along the curve of the locket hanging around her mottled, pursed neck, with wrinkles showing the peaks and valleys of a long life. She flicked at the hasp, but didn't have a need to open it. The locket contained the smiling black and white visage of Howard in his sailor's cap; one of the first photos he'd given her during the Big War when they met, the contrast now faded so one couldn't even ascertain his features.
Phyllis remembered the smile. Her memory instantly transported her to that bright day on Coney Island beach. She relived her marriage, too; her white haired hefty father parading her down the asile of the Lutheran Church as if he were showing off one of his prize dogs. The sweet taste of Howard's kiss. How his smile melted her resolve during the honeymoon night. She closed her eyes, her hand almost absent mindedly still fingering the locket. So many memories. Phyllis was somehow acutely aware that she didn't have much time. She remembered the birth of their sons, Jack and John, one right after the other. She would get their names mixed up all the way into their adult years, and still might phone one and ask about the other. This never failed to irk both boys, now men, during their conversations. But both of them accepted this, as they had all their lives. They were in their fifties now, with grown kids of their own, and beautiful wives. They had lives. Separate lives. All Phyllis had were memories.
She was walking Jack to school. Or was it to the park after? He was smiling that selfsame grin which Howard was always able to summon. It was smaller, befitting the round five year old face from which it beamed. His azure eyes sparkled. He laughed as he ran ahead slightly, and Phyllis called him back to her side.
John got into trouble more than once. If Jack didn't "bail him out" as he would often remark, John might go to a place where he really did need to be bailed out. Howard was sometimes absent from the boys. After all, he worked long hours as a longshoreman, and was pretty tired in the evenings. A little television at night. Maybe some wrestling or a ballgame. And then he was ready for bed. Howard always retired before Phyllis and the kids went to bed. If he hadn't been so tired as to fall instantly asleep, he would have been able to hear them laughing and playing until late in the evening. Phyllis loved her boys, her devil and her angel, and sometimes spoiled them a little.
But she spoiled them with pure love.
In time, so short a time it seemed, the boys grew up and grew away. Howard had more time now to spend with her after the boys left, Jack for college, and John for the service, like his father. Howard retired at 65. Was that in 1986? They shuttered the house which had been a home for decades to the four of them, and Howard and Phyllis spent the next decade traveling around the country in a large Winnebago motor coach. Soon dozens of touristy stickers adorned the rear of the coach. They even visited Coney Island once, but it was only a sad ghost of the vibrant place where they met so long ago.
Phyllis got up from the rocking chair and silently moved over to the nightstand. She reached out to the phone nested in it's cradle, all the while her right hand almost glued to the locket, almost as if the copper color in her hands had fused with the copper color of the locket. She had both boys on speed dial. She pushed the small button for Jack, her angel. "Mom?" Jack's voice boomed after he spotted her number on his phone's screen.
"John" Phyllis called.
Mixing up the boys, as usual.
"It's Jack, Mom. Mom, are you all right? I was going to call you later tonight."
"I'm at the hotel. Can you come and get me?"
"Mom, that's your home now." Jack had said those words so often that they came out of his mouth as if by rote. "Can you see your dresser? And the painting of Dad and you above the chair?"
"Is Howard with you?" She used her husband's given name instead of saying "Father" as she'd always called her husband when addressing her sons.
"Mom, Dad passed away five years ago. He's with Jesus now."
"Could you put him on the phone?"
The conversation, or what passed as one anyway, caromed like this for almost half an hour. Phyllis by turns got upset, angry, and saddened. Her right hand had dropped the locket, and it bounced around in the valley deep in her bosom. She was frightened, like when she was only seven, and the lamp had gone out in the front room during a storm. She very clearly saw the look on her own mother's face, worried but genuinely loving, giving her a safe place. She needed something safe right now. Where was Howard? Why wasn't Jack, or was it John, coming to get her and take her away from this lonesome hotel and back to the house? Why was everything so screwed up?
She looked blankly at the handset, and even though Jack were still trying to appease her, his voice fading in the distance, she put it back in the receiver's cradle, and the connection disappeared.
The curtains were still flapping about around the window, but they were hazy, and foreign. The yellowed pall washed over them completely. The window became an open maw, mocking her. Laughing at her. She grabbed the locket. This was safe. This was important to her. Phyllis looked down at it, staring at it, wanting to make it tell her what was happening. Why was the world getting all fuzzy? Where was....what was her husband's name, anyway?
The room in the elder care facility was smallish, furnished with the remnants of her life as she once remembered it, but rarely did these days. At 84, Phyllis had suffered from Alzheimer's disease for almost eight years now. The good days hardly ever came anymore. Her home was a hotel from which she could never check out. Her clothes were old and the yellow curtains never seemed to be washed. She never remembered who she was talking to. And there was the other woman in the mirror, who never seemed to go away. The woman in the mirror. The yellow curtains. The hotel. They all mocked her, and made her feel miserable.
Now she couldn't even remember what his name was.
She fingered the copper locket. Yes, this was important. This was the only link she had with sanity. This was her safety and her reality. She opened the hasp, having a bit trouble as usual, and looked at the photo held fast with little clips within. She didn't recognize the man in the sailor's cap. She didn't recognize the smile.
Phyllis sank back into the rocking chair, and finally let the locket slip from her grasp. Everything in her life was slipping. Everything was... forgotten.
In time she fell asleep. A deep, restful sleep. And she dreamed of Howard, smiling at her and telling her everything was going to be all right.
This week, I've posted examples of my comic art, my videomaking, my photography, and one of my poetry entries was posted right before the "blogathon." I'm a pretty creative sort, but I'm a writer first and foremost. As most of you know I usually write poetry and most of the prose I write concern my memoirs. Sometimes my memoirs are in first person, and sometimes in third. I've written poetry from the perspective of a number of people. However I rarely post fictional short stories on my blog. Truth is, I've begun many many short stories (and novels) and never finished too many of them. A few years ago, I had two ideas for short stories. The first one was "A Hole in the Wall" and I've posted it twice on this blog. The second was "The Locket" which is now "The Copper Locket". I've written this story numerous ways in my mind and tonight I decided to write it as a 'blogstory'. In other words, short for blogs. Not long and drawn out, as I usually write prose. Since I'm also a poet, I wrote it as a "prose poem." I hope you were touched by this story, which, like all stories, has a basis in fact. My own mother passed away from complications of a stroke when I was in my early 20s. I hardly remember her sometimes. This story is dedicated to the memory of my late friend Joel's mother, Lois, who left us some years back, and who suffered from the awful effects of Alzheimer's. I saw her deteriorate from a vibrant, wonderful, witty woman to a shallow husk of a person with hardly any memory at all. Once during one of her phone calls (Joel was on her speed dial) which I answered, she mistook me for her late husband. It was the weirdest conversation I've ever had. MFN/ppf

Mike, this is...beautiful. Really. I love how the locket is such a significant part of the story--it ties everything together very well.
I love this story, Michael. Truly. I attended a memorial service this evening for a dear friend who died too young this past week. Cancer stole her vitality and eventually her life, but it could not steal her joy, nor her praise for her God Who now holds her safe and whole.
This is a beautiful story.
Love,
Blue

This is great, Mike. Thanks for your xanga contributions.
Almost like you got inside Phyllis's mind. How did you do that anyway?
Very moving story, reminding me of the many times I've taken animals to nursing homes as part of Pet Therapy, which I can attest is a very positive contribution to the well-being of such elderly patients.
But lockets are good if pets aren't handy.
like!
You have, I think, captured the feel of alzheimer's. Remember, that disease affects those connected to the patient probably as much or more than the patient her/himself. You remember, the patient does not - at least in later stages.
Many older people suffer moments of memory or word loss and are frightened to think that they may be experiencing beginning alzheimer's; those who actually are in the early stages are often angry and frustrated, but seldom realize what is happening.Dealing with older people can sometimes be very frustrating - they often live in a world they did not expect and do not want. They do have something to offer us all though - their experience - and encouraging them to share it can be very interesting, and is certainly good for keeping them connected to the present world.
So close to the memories I still have with my father who is 94 and has dementia more than Alzheimer's. But our conversations can be hauntingly similar to this story. BTW, his hair is still black and very thick. Strange, eh?
Mike, I think you should blog more of your stories. This one caused my eyes to mist up. Coincidentally, it reminded me of an original song one of my musician friends wrote. I was titled "The Locket" and it was about his mother and her loss of memory. My mother and my step father had this hideous disease, Alzheimers. Toward the end, my mother no longer recognized her family. I did not experience this with her as we were separated by too much distance for me to vist her, I learned about it from my step brother and his wife, and it really upset my brother. Her memory had begun deteriorating for years, even before Walt was diagnosed. My brother would write me that although I was responding to her letters, she would tell him she hadn't heard from me and wondered how I was doing. He then would show her my letters. Your story triggered all these memories. I'll be honest with you. At 73, I am concerned about what might be in store for me, memory wise, in the future. It's why I stay active, do crossword puzzles, sing, play guitar, and I've heard it's helpful to learn a new language. I know there are medications which may treat Alzheimers, but I'd pray that someone could come up with a better way to prevent or to cure it. Anyway, you are an excellent storyteller, so post more stories, too. ~~Blessings 'n Cheers
Mike
This is such a wonderful story. It truly touched my heart to read it. I can't tell you how many times I have come to your blog over the years when I have been feeling down or lonely just to read your stories or what your videos and left feeling so much better. Oh my word, most excellent. You melded the confusion and memories perfectly.
This may sound silly, but I also like how you oxidized the copper font of the title with a green patina.
Very well written story.
I liked being inside her mind where the memories hide. Great story.
nice
Here is a personal friend and an international singer that went through the same as the story....Please, go to this SITE Scroll down to THE LOCKET and take a listen...His mother died from Alzheimer complications at the age of 84. As I read this post I can't help but wonder if you know Jed Marum also.
@mommachatter - Dear Mom, Above, Donna mentions that a friend of hers wrote a song called "The Locket." as well! Must be a universal image or something. This just came out of my own imagination, and my memories of Lois Birney, to whom it is dedicated, my late friend Joel's mother. I needed something tangible as the character's connection to her sanity, and a locket seemed to be the right choice. It could have been a necklace or a ring I guess. I liked the idea of her husband's photo in the locket, and that she knew it was important, but only in those rare moments of lucidity, would even remember that it was her husband, and it's significance to her. I'll have to take a listen to the song. I've never heard of the performer till I read your comment.
@baldmike2004 - Yes, Jed is a friend of both of us. A kind gentle man and wonderful to listen to. He writes most of his own material. One he wrote about a man that tried to circumvent the world in 9 ft boat. It was his friend and I think they both knew the odds when he sailed but although he was never seen again...Jed wrote about "at least he tried" He did what was important to himself.
Thank you for pointing this story out to me today. I have been gone away much too long. I used to know your blog almost as well as my own. This story, it is very intimate and emotional. You walk around in Phyllis' mind and heart as if you were her. Each emotion captured and rendered so clearly. So very well done as usual, stunning work Mike. Really stunning. Are you published yet? If not, you really should look into it. If you are, by all means, send me a link up to where your work is so I could purchase it! ~*~Barbi

I think that what you posted was very reasonable.
However, think about this, what if you wrote a
catchier title? I ain't suggesting your content is not solid, however suppose you
added a headline that makes people want more? I mean "The Copper Locket" A Short Story | WhenWordsCollide is
a little boring. You ought to peek at Yahoo's home page and watch how they write post titles to get
people interested. You might add a video or a related pic or two to
get people excited about everything've written. Just my opinion, it could make your website a
little bit more interesting.
