40th High School Class Reunion?
My workmate Pam just got back from her 40th High School Class Reunion for the Class of 1971. We're close together in age, and we've joked for years about how advanced (in age, that is) we're getting. My birthday is first, in May, followed by hers a few months later. Like I always do, I tell her she looks real good for a woman of 35.
Pam had a great time. She reconnected with a lot of old friends. For those of you who are still somewhat "young", 40 years is a long time. Most of our generation thought we'd be young forever. I didn't even think I'd ever really be 50. And now, as I like to say, to somewhat alleviate the shock when it happens, "I'm pushing 60."
My workmate didn't go to high school in Southern California, as I did. She was born in N'Awlins, Louisiana. She flew back home for the reunion. As she related how great a time she had, I suddenly realized that perhaps there might be a 40th Class Reunion for my class at Rosemead High School, in Rosemead, CA, in the heart of the San Gabriel Valley. I got home and googled the reunion, and got an "official alumni site" for which I had to "register". The reunion page listed last year's Class of 70 reunion, and a Class of 63 reunion for this year, and an "All Classes Reunion" which was also held last year in Laughlin, but nothing for the Class of 71. We were a really fine class back when I was in high school, but I guess nobody cares about getting together now that we're "pushing 60".
Let me tell you about my experience with class reunions. (Of course I can't write a blog entry without digging into the memoirs, you understand.) This entry will show up as a "note" on Facebook in a couple of days, and some of my "Facebook Friends" are alumni from the Class of 71. It's interesting that only a few of those were actually friends of mine when I attended high school. I "socialized" (internet style) with most of them back around 10 years ago on Classmates.com when I was trying to get a 30th Class Reunion together. I was only "pushing 50" back then.
My how time flies, to coin an aphorism.
Our 10th Class Reunion was held in 1981 in a hotel in Pasadena. I can't remember which one. Frankly, I can't remember much about the night at all. I attended with my best pal, the late Tom Haugsted, and we were "pretty drunk at the time". I was also high on cocaine and possibly LSD. The late 70s and early 80s were a long drawn out nonstop party time for the Mikester. I believe I made a fool of myself and possibly tried to hit on those women with whom I had a crush back when I was in HS. I can remember having a deep drunk conversation with our ex principal, who was a notorious drunk as well.
In 1991 I didn't even try to find out if there was a 20th. An ex classmate (also deceased, come to think of it) told me the 25th was pretty anemic. I was with Pat in the early 90s, and wasn't really thinking about anything except how to extricate myself from that situation. (The link is to my 6 part blog series "My Life With Pat." detailing the whole sordid story.)
I got on the internet in 1997 and created my personal website allthingsmike, in 1999. One of the sections I created for my website was the "Virtual Pantherama" (We were the Panthers, natch, and the Pantherama is the title of the yearbook at RHS. The image at the top of this entry is the composite I created for the website. The photo above is from the 1970 yearbook and is a group of student government leaders. I'm on the right, holding a copy of the student newspaper I edited, "The Panther's Tale)". I joined Classmates.com, and began reconnecting with a few old friends, and made some new ones. I never found (and still haven't, to this day) any of the "lunch gang" members with whom I felt really close to in high school. I guess some of us old fogeys just aren't internet savvy, even nowadays when you can get the internet on your phone!
Just as I did a few moments ago, in early 2001 I used search engines to find out if the Class of 71 at RHS was having a 30th reunion. (Back in the day, there was "Excite", "Hotbot", and "AltaVista". Old search engines don't die, they just fade into the googlesphere.) I signed up as "reunion co-ordinater" at Classmates.com (which was a happening site back in 2001. For reference, Google and Xanga were baby sites back then. Mark Zuckerberg, the guy who created Facebook, was only 16!) I and a couple of others tried to get a reunion together. I remember thinking that we'd have to exhaust more "analog" methods of searching for alumni, cause the internet was not really that ubiquitous at the turn of the century. (I just love writing that phrase.)
The plan was for a reunion on a cruise ship in the L.A. Harbor. (Not my idea, but it was a good one, don't ya think?) The date was sometime in September. I think you can imagine that after the 11th, nobody was thinking remotely of high school reunions.j
The next year, the Class of 72 had their reunion. It was at a hotel in Pasadena. Although sober this time, I still don't remember which one. (Senior moment, I am "pushing 60".) I attended. I was excited to go, and I drove the 50 some miles from my home in the South Bay thinking about reconnecting with old friends. When I got there, I didn't recognize ANYONE. I remember seeing only three other members of my class at the reunion. I knew two of them vaguely, and only really knew one guy, with whom I sat during dinner. I knew lots of folks when I was in high school. I was pretty popular. Maybe not a "soch", but I did edit the newspaper as a junior, and I was "Commissioner of Student Faculty Relations" as a senior. There are no blank areas in any of my yearbooks, which are filled with wonderful sentiments from my friends. I was in lots of clubs, and even starred in a play during Drama Night in 1971. I wanna tell ya. I got a bit of culture shock during that reunion. After dinner, I went home.
So I'm thinking about reunions. Pam had a great time at hers. I wonder if anyone at my old high school is thinking of having one. Well, I've signed up with yet another "Class Alumni" website, supposedly the "official one" this time. Perhaps somebody will send me an invitation. (Or else someone will ask me why I don't step up as the "co-ordinator") I don't want to plan a class reunion for gosh sakes. I just want to attend if one's going to be held.
If there is, it'll probably be at a hotel in Pasadena.

I didn't go to any reunions till my 50th -- what fun that was, to see all my classmates 50 years later!
I went to the 30th and 40th. The 30th was better, I won the prize of going the farthest which is just the way I want it. For the 40th, I noticed there were a lot more people in my area, 3000+ miles away, so I didn't win that prize.
That is pretty interesting to read. I have yet to have a high school reunion yet, but there are plans for one in a few years. It's going to be fun to see who attends and how much people have changed.
i went to my 10th, but none after that for various reasons. but my 40th is coming up and there seems to be plans about it for this summer some time. i just hope they decided on a date soon so i can make better plans since it is in colorado
and I'm depressed again....(sigh)
I don't think I'll be going to any class reunions. I was homeschooled. Glad your friend had a good time at her class reunion though.

@Diva_Jyoti_3 - 2nd pair of braces. In my Freshman year, I had the first set taken off. Then I was in a car wreck at 14 and broke my jaw. Had oral surgery and a 2nd set of braces, which Mom hoped would be off by the time I got my senior pic taken. As you see, they were still there!

My ex girlfriend similarly gets my blog in her email, but never mentioned this. I choose the white color when I'm using a black, or in this case, dark color (maroon and gray are my ex high school's school colors) background. I will make sure I scale up the text from white to a light gray from now on when using a dark background.
