PhotoPost: Evergreen Cemetary: East Los Angeles
EVERGREEN CEMETERY: EAST LOS ANGELES
The Evergreen Cemetery in the Boyle Heights area of East Los Angeles covers around five city blocks and is enclosed by E. Cesar E. Chavez Ave on the north, First Street on the south, North Lorena St. on the west and N. Evergreen Street on the east. This is the oldest cemetery in the Los Angeles area, and contains many interesting headstones dating back to the 1800s. The cemetery was established in 1877. Eddie "Rochester" Anderson, Jack Benny's sidekick, is buried there, among many of the early notable Los Angeles families, including the Hollenbecks and the Boyles.
These photos were taken last Saturday morning and will be among the photos featured in my new "East Los Angeles and Downtown" folder in my Webshots Gallery later in the week. (EDIT 7:03 p.m.: The folder with 100 photos is now online. Just hit the link above. ) I wasn't necessarily looking for famous people, but rather for interesting combinations from a photographic standpoint. The first photo in this series has been "enhanced" by compositing the clouds and sky from another of my photos. The rest of the photos are presented as shot, with no enhancement.

We breathe, we believe, we bother, and we broker
We experience, with exhuberance, we wonder, and we wander
The human life is precious, and we rarely notice this
That God's Great Gift is just a fleeting brushing glancing kissAvowed to gaze into the sky and wonder why
We look to Heaven, ask the questions, eradicate our doubts
But when the reaper visits was there something we forgot
And do we ponder feeling in the ground as bodies rotFor hundreds of years the bodies disappear
Into the ground, with sacrament, adorned by elaborate memorials
Or else a simple cross, or star, or placard made of marble
And the living will visit, gaze at the stones, and simply marvel.Astounding thoughts and reveries, epiphanies and silence
Mortality comes knocking on the door at night unawares
History calls up through the new cut grass
And as we breathe, we realize that this life too, shall pass.
This is a memorial to the fallen soldiers of the 442nd Infantry, a Japanese-American unit in World War II. The 442nd is the most decorated unit in United States history. In less then two years of combat, the 442nd Regimental Combat Team earned more then 18,000 individual decorations.
This guy wasn't at the cemetery. He was down the street at Hollenbeck Park, but I like the little guy so decided to feature him in this post. I got some nice video when he flew across the lake, which is situated underneath a freeway overpass.
The quantity, difference in style, and age of a lot of the gravestones and memorials makes this a much more unique and picturesque place than Rose Hills or Forest Lawn.
In 1971, inspired by the "Spoon River Anthology" of poems by the poet Edgar Lee Masters, I wrote the following:

1971 (18 years old)
Each one
Had something to do
Each one
Did it
The old man sired a family of twelve
Though half of them died before him
He had the satisfaction of the gratitude
They bore him.
The young woman committed suicide
When her young husband died in the war
Yet she served as a tragic example
For her younger sister who almost made the same mistake.
The twelve year old boy died of leukemia
But in his twelve years he gained
Maturity that most men only dream of.
The housewife never nagged
She helped a man reach success
And saw her children become
Upstanding human beings because of her.
They all,
Each one
Had something to do.
Each one
Fulfilled something
And life was made worthwhile.
I know this is a long post, and will take a while to download but this was such a great place for photos. I spent about two hours wandering the grounds, and trying to find just the right shots. There will be over 150 photos in the Webshots folder.
Another historical cemetery I photographed extensively back in 1999 was on Nantucket island off the coast of Massachusetts. The graves dated back to the 1600s, but the memorials were not as magnificent as those at the Evergreen, which is "right in my own backyard". There is a jogging trail which runs around the perimeter of the grounds, and while the surrounding area is full of the bustling sounds and sights of a major metropolis, while inside one is surrounded by peace and serenity. I had lunch with Elizabeth (The Queen of Swords) at the Mercadito across from the cemetery, and on Sunday she took some fantastic photos of the surrounding area. In Keywest they have a scavenger hunt that is HUGE and all the locals cooperate -- one of the things you have to do is go to the cemetary and find out what a certain marker says... they had to finally take it out due to the disprect of entire corporate groups going to the cemtary at once. Bye the way --- it said "I told you I was sick"

You'll love some of the Scottish graveyards, full of grand and massive stones, angels, the lot. In Oxford the old cemeteries are left more or less to nature, only nettles and trees are seen to, otherwise they become havens for flowers, butterflies and birds.

You suggested I might not want to visit today, but I'm actually glad I came. I've always loved looking through old cemeteries, and the first thing I saw on your page today was my last name! I didn't know my family was honored with an area of East Los Angeles! If you read back a few entries on my site, you'll see a photo of the Boyle Monument that's right inside the doors of St. Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin, Ireland. When we visited the UK a few years ago, one of the first things we did was visit a couple of cemetaries. During our stay in Scotland, we poked through an ancient cemetery in Luss (where Loch Lommond is located), and then another in Balquhidder. That's where we found the tomb of Rob Roy MacGregor and some more Boyles. One of my favorite poems is death related, too:

I love your pictures...and your poems...and your beard. You're the coolest. You should come over for a cookout or something of that sort...good luck with the trip though. Anyways, sometimes I find that cemetaries, being the place where the living honor the dead in some shape or form, can be some of the most beautiful sights/ sites you can see. Of course I also think the same about the architecture of Catholic Renaissance chuch sanctuaries. I guess I hold reverence in high regard. Good day to you Sir. I tip my hat again.

These pictures were great! I looked through the whole East L.A. gallery of pics you have there and enjoyed the slideshow. My favorites are the L.A. skyline one you took at Evergreen Park with the graffitti, the 5 Fwy. and Downtown L.A. all in the same shot, then the one of Downtown L.A. with the barbed wire in the foreground was quite the smart shot ... and finally the Disney Hall reflections one was great too.
Funny thing about that particular building. Don't know if you read about it, but they have been getting complaints about the glare from the buildings around there ... so much so that they have ordered them to dull the finish on the building to alleviate this problem. Even though ... it is a wonderful building ... don't understand how some people see it as an eyesore. When I was doing jury duty it was about 2/3's done and most people were talking about how horrible it looked. Personally I like the fact that it breaks traditional architecture standards and stands out ... but to each his own I guess.
Overall though, wonderful pics ...
