Wayback Post: Stupidity
The following post was originally written for my Internet Island participatory blogring on Oct. 15, 2007 and the allusions to "topic entries" and comments from other Islanders are related to the topic when it was posted online. MFN/ppf
I can't stand stupidity.
Doing something stupid is the most inept action a human being can take. Acquiring a patina of "stupidity" is the most horrible self destructive behavior I can think of.
Some people might think that calling someone "stupid" is the equivalent of deriding someone for their lack of intelligence. I've never used the word that loosely. If I use the word "stupid" to describe someone's actions, or if I call somebody's decision a "stupid" one, then I am not judging them or assessing their intelligence quotient or smartness factor. Stupidity is best described as a lack of common sense, or normal judgement on the part of an individual. A person isn't necessarily "stupid" per se, but can certainly adapt "stupid" behaviors and do "stupid" things, some of which are difficult to correct.
Some people can recite complete passages from textbooks, and some people can hardly remember where they put their keys. This doesn't make the forgetful ones "stupid". They're just forgetful.
Some people are able to make the right decision at all times. Some people make terrible mistakes. Making a mistake might be the result of a stupid behavoir, but making the mistake might not be stupid in and of itself.
There are may ways in which normal people can exhibit stupidity. Most of the time, a reasonably intelligent being will shy away from stupidity, but even the mose enlightened among us does a stupid thing every once in a while. It might even just be a part of "human nature."
I waited a bit before weighing in on this topic, because I wanted to see what others wrote. First of all, this topic proved to be less popular than many I've posted on the Island. I believe this is because nobody wants to judge others in a public forum, and not too many people are possibly honest enough to assess their own stupidity. The word might be identified as "the 'S' word", a word which might be shied away from because people might think that by pointing out the concept of "stupidity" one is being over judgemental and politically incorrect. Here are some statements from the enties to the topic so far:
"The very term in itself is derogatory of another human being." Zeal4living.
"Stupid mistakes, I've made a few. Call them temporary lapses in judgement." HarmonyOstars.
"I'm not a big fan of the word stupid. I think there are people that choose to be stupid, and there are those whose biology does not allow them to be as quick as others." BoureeMusique.As I stated previously, stupidity is a state of mind which we have all experienced. No matter what the cause, we have all done something in our lives which shows a lack of common sense on our part. Traffic accidents, holding our water too long, getting in a needless fight, these are all examples of where the "laws of stupidity" take over, forcing the most upright, intelligent, and enlightened among us to collapse in a heap of utter regret and aching for a do-over.
Somebody might draw a "picture' of stupidity by describing a developmentally disabled person, or an Appalacian hillbilly, but this is not a true assessment of stupidity. Someone who does not possess the biological 'brainpower' isn't "stupid". A hillbilly might 'seem' a bit stupid to a Rhoades Scholar, but in their milieu, the hillbilly could very well be a seer and prophet. Just because a guy doesn't wear shoes and speaks differently than you or I doesn't make him stupid.
But someone who does something anyway, EVEN THOUGH HE KNOWS BETTER is being stupid. To deny one's own common sense, and the common sense of the world around us (which should equal out to being the same common sense) is to be 'stupid'. Even the most intelligent among us can do a stupid thing every now and then.
Here a a few of the stupid things I've done in my life. I'm not proud of being stupid, but I'm human, and I believe that human nature can be a bit stupid at times.
In first grade, I thought I could run through the schoolyard swingset lengthwise, missing the six kids on the swings, if I timed my run properly. I didn't make any detailed studies. I was only 6 years old, but I should have had enough common sense to know that even if the odds were in my favor, there was an off chance that of six different kids on six different angles, I was in danger of getting kicked in the head. I didn't announce the experiment to the assembled kids on the playground either. I just started to run through the swingset, and I was kicked in the head by the third kid. I needed eight stitches where the skin broke above my left eye. A half an inch lower, and I could have been "blinded by stupidity."
My little brother's sixth grade teacher was a family friend, and at the start of the summer after I turned 14, Mr. Weatherby was to drive a carload of pot luck items to the school for my mother, who didn't drive. The school was three blocks from our house. When Weatherby pulled up to the curb and went in the house, I sat in his car and "pretended" to drive. He came out of the house with the boxes of food, loaded them in the back seat, and then sat in the shotgun seat and told me to "drive to school". I had only driven the family car up and down the driveway in a straight line in practice with my dad, and I knew better than to do anything without first asking my mother. I wanted to drive so much, however, and the "stupid" gene told me that since my brother's teacher was telling me I could "drive" I was alright doing so. A block down the street, I needed to turn left, but had never experienced turning a car, much less one with power steering. I lost control, and in the ensuing accident, I broke my jaw when my face hit the steering wheel. Mr. Weatherby bailed out before the car hit the corner house. He had experienced a bit of stupidity himself allowing a 14 year old to drive his car. (He ceased to be a family friend after this incident, it might be noted. My parents weren't stupid)
I used to drink an awful lot of alcohol, beer mostly, in college and during my 20s. I would drink so much that I would "black out" and then "pass out" on numerous occasions. Some of my friends would black out and/or pass out as well, and everyone would laugh at the previous evening's shenanigans the next day. Usually I would wake up in a friend's house, or in my car, and I usually didn't get into any trouble, but I knew I was blacking out, so to continue drinking and doing so was quite stupid. On two occasions, I got so drunk my motor mouth got a bit unhinged, and I upset 1. a burly biker bar patron in one incidence and 2. a burly acquaintence of a drinking buddy in another. I don't even remember getting beat up. I lost my spectacles in both incidents. Both happened near to either my own house or the place of a friend where I was staying, so I wasn't driving at the time, and didn't get in any auto accidents, but I was stupid enough to talk out of turn without having my wits about me and I was beat up pretty bad both times.
A couple of weeks ago I was returning to work from lunch. I drive an open convertible with a 360 degree view, and I back into my parking place. Judy, our Vice President, parks next to me. She had just parked and was getting out of her car, a two door BMW. I back into my space, and I aligned my car with the parking space. She waved at me, and I waved, and when doing so, I totally missed looking into my left rearview mirrow while backing and I bumped her car, to the eventual tune of $1200.00 while backing. This was pretty stupid. I've backed into this space many many times, and I wasn't looking while waving. I felt doubly stupid because Judy was standing right there by her car as I bumped her.
Stupidity isn't something that we inherit, and we shouldn't characterize people as being "stupid". There aren't "degrees of stupidity." Doing something stupid is doing something that flies in the face of common sense. WE SHOULD KNOW BETTER. Stupidity is a lapse in judgement, and usually, if we use our common sense, we will have far less "stupid" adventures

I agree with you insofar as you define your terms. I try to be lenient with others when they make the same mistake twice, as long as they're at least learning *something* from it. Live and learn, right?

Stupid is either relative~ or misused. We got called stupid quite a few times for adopting eight children. :spinning:
Your analogy of the hillbilly made me smile. Born and raised in the shadow of the Appalacian Mountains, I find many people who are not from around here believe the stereotypes about southerners and mountain folk. The one that amuses me the most is the observation on our cadence of speech. Yes, we do talk in a slow, leisurely manner which many may equate with lower intelligence. The truth of the manner is simply we are not in a hurry.
An example of the word 'stupid' according to your definition (which I like) would be knowing that one is an alcoholic, and just going ahead and starting to drink again anyway. Or quitting smoking for 3 months like someone I know, and then taking my credit card (which, I'm not in the habit of looking at recepts until, by coincidence I just happened to look at that one) and charging a pack of Marlborough Lights on it.
I mean a) come on, shit, you said you quit smoking, b) you quit smoking for 3 months meaning that now you will have to go through withdrawal all over again, c) you had only just recently re-earned my trust to go off with one of my credit cards, d) smoking is gross and deadly and you had almost gotten away from it, e) I bought you 100 dollars worth of that fucking gum and that pisses me off even more, and then f) getting MAD at ME for getting mad at YOU for doing it!
Stupid times 6. Big lose.

I also like the word 'retard' when an unintelligent person also acts like an asshole, unrelated. so much for political correctness on THIS topic, lol, fuck it! :fun:
@Botolf - Yep, it's really not fair to some of you that there is a reputation of ignorance associated with a twang accent. I grew up with it on my grandmothers side, and, for a woman who only went through the 5th grade, you could not get one single thing past that woman. she was brilliant. and fierce! you really didn't want to get on her bad side, which, fortunately I couldn't do, being her favorite.

Stupid? When excuses are a dime a dozen. My ex girlfriend got pregnant by me several times. The only smart thing to do is several abortions, or is it that the alternative was/is worse? But lo and behold there was a final one and he got adopted and is running around somewhere wondering where his father is and me also wondering how he is doing...Having a kid is a long term problem, something you might not know fortunately or unfortunately.
Stupid? being addicted to crack is not really a party when you head down the road to being extremely poor. Yeah and having a crack baby is no fun for the baby either.
Well fortunately I have a good family that helps and loves me. That helps ease my stupidity.
Ohhh boy, I've done many "stupid" things in my life that seemed a good idea at the time. Thinking back I realise how very stupid they were!!
When I think back to some of the stupid things I've done... I think I'd rather not!

I think personal stupidity is a sort of self-censoring mechanism. We do something that doesn't turn out too well and we label our decision stupid.
Applying the label to others is always a problem - it's so easy to see the mote in the other's eye.
If you are especially smart, you probably have trouble with some slower or ignorant people and it's easy to label them stupid - which is itself, stupid
We all do stupid things from time to time. But I think people that call others stupid while never looking at their own faults, are lacking in people skills. Being too honest has gotten me into trouble. That is a form of stupidity. Unfortunately.
