I grew up during the "golden age" of television, and of children's television. Along with the mix of movies and variety shows, Perry Mason and Studio One, The Twilight Zone, wrestling and roller derby, plus innumerable game shows, the tube was filled with both classic cartoons and newly minted made for television fare, usually hosted by either a clown or a middle aged man in some kind of costume. Children's television, while years away from Sesame Street and The Electric Company, was growing as never before. The crude puppet shows of the late 40s and early 50s, characterized by Howdy Doody and Kukla, Fran, and Ollie, were being replaced by shows in which the host would present a plethora of cartoons, but would also ply his young audience with birthday wishes, lessons in good manners, and entreaties to eat right. Most of the cartoons shown were not originally even children's fare, but the classic shorts shown before the main feature in movie houses during the 30s and 40s. Long before the advent of videotape created instant entertainment for kids, my brother, sister and I would watch these shows, with their endlessly repeating cartoon loops, gaining insight into the shared experience of seeing, and commeting upon the cartoons as they spooled over and over again.
My siblings and I continually "directed" the action as we watched. There were three of us, and we each tried to top the other with our predictions/recollections of the schtick and sight gags, our voices growing louder and louder, and sometimes brother and I would get so loud my mother could be heard calling from the kitchen,"Boys, stop your roughhousing so your sister can watch the show." All the while my sister was sitting giggling at our antics.I live in Los Angeles, California, the self proclaimed "Entertainment Capital of the World", and growing up in this environment afforded us possibly the best of the hosts of children's television. Tom Hatten hosted the Fleischer Studio's Popeye cartoons, and taught me how to draw cartoons. Engineer Bill encouraged us to drink our milk, while playing along with his "red light, green light" game. He also instilled in me my love of model train sets. Sheriff John and Chucko the Clown gave elaborate birthday parties. Captain Kangaroo (the inimitable Bob Keeshan, who started out as Clarabelle the Clown on Buffalo Bob Smith's Doody show) not only showed cartoons, but he read from a variety of classic children's books, as the illustrations were shown on screen. "Curious George", Dr. Seuss. Little Golden Books. The cartoon I remember most from the Captain's show was Tom Terrific. Stop motion animator Art Clokey had two cartoon series in the early 60s. The somewhat surreal Gumby cartoons instilled a love of books in my imaginative head, as the "little green ball of clay" would zip into various tomes in order to fool the blockheads. Another Clokey cartoon, "David and Goliath" about a little boy and his rather large dog, was chock full of Christian values and aired on Sunday's after church.
As I grew older, I became interested in the study of animation history, and began collecting cartoon collectibles while in college. I have a wealth of cartoons on two tape formats, two disc formats, and DVD. The great Warner Brothers Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies, which I remember watching not on Saturday mornings, but in the evenings on the Bugs Bunny Show in 1960 while in first grade, have been remastered and are available on six boxed sets. I own two of them, and am still collecting. I have all of the cartoons on laserdisc from my favorite cartoon director, Tex Avery, who started at Warner's Termite Terrace and then moved on to MGM in the 40s, creating the cartoon series Droopy and Screwy Squirrel. He directed the greatest cartoon of all time, "King Sized Canary" featured on my FG topic post for Humor in Sept.2008. I've got lots of Disney shorts, including the Silly Symphonies, Mickey Mouse, and Donald Duck. (I never liked Pluto, and my favorite Disney character, Goofy's box set has been sold out for years, and commands over $100.00 on eBay.) The Disney cartoons we watched as kids were presented on the original Mickey Mouse club (in black and white) on weekday afternoons, and on the Disneyland (and later Wonderful World of Disney, and Wonderful World of Color) programs Sunday evenings. Before I ever saw a Disney feature in a theater, I'd already seen most of the scenes from the classic movies on TV on the Disneyland program. My favorite cartoon studio of all time was run by the Fleischer Brothers, Max and Dave. They created the Betty Boop and Popeye series. I have Popeye on remasterd DVD but only have Betty Boop on VHS. However, the box set has every cartoon in which she ever appeared, which spans most of the decade of the 1930s, including the racy pre code cartoons (which were NOT shown on television when I was a kid.)
A Short History of Cartoons
Animation in the movies started almost immediately after the movies started themselves. So, too, did what we know know now as computer generated effects. (although the effects weren't created by a computer) The movies themselves are a little over a century old. Everybody who's ever been to Disneyland can tell you that Mickey Mouse debuted in 1928, during the height of the art of the silent film. But consider this. The films of Windsor McKay (Little Nemo 1909, Gertie the Dinosaur 1913), while not being the first animated cartoons, came within a decade of the birth of the movies. "Little Nemo" which, when it debuted in newspapers in 1905, signalled the beginning of the comics page as we now know it, seques from live action animation, which, judging by the date, not only looks fantastic, but amazes with it's pre-psychedelic overtones.
Cartoons existed in history merely five years after the industry of movie production and exhibition began. Max Fleischer, whose studio rivalled Disney in the early days, made his first Koko cartoon in 1915. In the 30s and 40s, cartoons got more and more sophisticated, both in technique and in content. By the time I and my siblings were watching animation on television, the artform was going through another renaissance. Hanna-Barbera, (founded by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera in 1957, after their fame with the Tom and Jerry series for MGM) established a "limited animation" style which allowed cartoons to be rapidly made for television. Their first cartoon series was Ruff and Ready. In the early 60s, long before The Simpsons and Family Guy, Hanna-Barbera aired a series of popular nighttime cartoon series on Network TV, including "Huckleberry Hound", "Yogi Bear", "The Flintsones" and "The Jetsons". Cartoons were originally made for adults, and children enjoyed them too. "The Flintstones" was a sitcom based on "The Honeymooners" with humor created not for kids, but for their parents. We watched each episode along with our parents.
Another great cartoon house was the Jay Ward Studios, which created "Rocky and Bullwinkle", a show which deliberately worked on dual levels, entertaining both kids and adults. Jay Ward's first cartoon series was "Crusader Rabbit", which is largely forgottten, but one of my early faves as a kid. I used to have a set of collector cards for this cartoon series. When YouTube came online in 2005, these cartoons were among the first videos I searched for and watched online.
They richly animated style of Fleischer cartoons (which included the invention of rotoscoping and the use of circular "sets" against which the Popeye cartoon characters interacted) and of the Disney studios, plus the sardonic antics of the Jay Ward and Hannah Barbera Studios endeared the concept of animation to a very large generation, those of us aging baby boomers who fell in love with the art form. I, and most everyone in my generation, grew up with cartoons. Even the maligned advertisements masquerading as cartoons from the 70s and 80s are loved and wistfully remembered by many who grew up with My Little Pony, The Transformers, The Smurfs and the Care Bears. (And of course Scooby Doo.)
Even anime, which is a Japanese cartoon genre (also not specifically limited to children) characterized by cinematic sets and action, showed up in the early 60s on American TV with Simba, the White Lion, Speed Racer, and Astro Boy.
It is a well documented fact that children respond to animation, and enjoy watching cartoons over and over and over again. I can easily predict that "today's kids", the "computer generation", will wholeheartedly embrace computer animation as on video games, and in the output of the Pixar studio just as lovingly as we did our Popeye's and Bugs Bunny's.
Animation is an avowed art form, which historically changes in appearance as talented visionaries realize anything imagined can be animated, and anything in the imagination can be visualized by cartoons.Cartoons, throughout history, have documented our fears and dreams, and this is what endears them to us.

I thought about contributing to this topic, but I'm not sure how to make it work. Thanks for the detailed history on cartoons. I had many favorites but Looney Tunes will always top that list. Bugs, Road Runner, Daffy, Sylvester, Tweety, Pepe, and company are in my DVD collection and I still watch them regularly.
#2 on my list would be Rocky and Bullwinkle. My childhood hours were spent mostly on these two gems.

My favorites were the Looney Tunes cartoons, but somehow I don't recall anything about "Crusader Rabbit". I may have to do some "you Tubing, myself. I watched the Hanna-Barbera cartoons, but the cruder animation in them always bothered me, even as a child.
I like all the cartoon icons you have included. I almost forgot about Beany and Cecil!

Thanks for the short history on cartoons. My first lasting memory of a cartoon had to be Disney's Little Mermaid because my sister had it on VHS. It's been a really interesting and educational read and it's nice to know where all those cartoon related memories come from.

I like the old days when artists are artists who produce works without the help of modern technologies. These artistes would painstakingly draw on each cell by hand and reanimated them by projecting them on actual screen, and not in computers.
I always have a soft spot for Betty Boop and Jessica Rabbit!
Thanks for the history lesson. I love cartoons. Did you know when Walt Disney first released Snow White to theaters, adults actually fled the theater terrified? The wicked queen was THAT frightening. Thus, if I am remembering correctly, Disney called it back to make the queen less frightening and re-released it.
Believe it or not, despite the generation gap, most of the cartoons you listed are the ones I actually grew up with. My parents were a little slow on adapting to modern technology, so a TV wasn't a huge priority for a while, all my cartoon experience was from my grandpa's VHS tapes of old-time cartoons.
The funniest thing is that while reading your siblings' prediction quotes at the top of the post, I can completely picture those scenes in my head and in fact, I think I remember many of those episodes.
Your knowledge of this subject amazes me.

While cartoon can be entertaining to the masses, there is a serious underlying philosophical message in each cartoon and each cartoon character's behaviors. Aristotle argues that the slave of society could not engage in civic life because his desires take hold of him. This holds true for Wile E. Coyote. He is unable to live for any other reason than trying to satisfy his craving for Roadrunner. Coyote is the slave, because he is in need of satisfying his bodily urges. He may not even be hungry, yet he cannot control his inhibitions. Roadrunner is not a slave by nature, because he uses his mind.

Thanks for the wonderful walk down memory lane! Cartoons were so enjoyable for a child growing up in the 50s. In Syracuse,NY we had a local program where we could watch The Magic Toy Shop(non-cartoon). The people were dressed in such goofy costumes! The story teller was Mr. Trolley, a man with a trolley over his head with just his eyes showing. Merrilee the play lady( feature an aging Pollyanna type) who in real life was married to a doofus with the stage name of Eddie Flum Dum; trust your imagination here. The scuttlebut at the time was that she was an alcoholic; probably because of him.
entertainment. We enjoyed the puppets, stories and even people talking to use like we were little babies. Cartoons were actually a step up for us after that. Sometimes it's fun to look back to your childhood and see something that doesn't instill nightmares.
@dsullivan - Dear Sully, I also leave a link to the Cartoons section of the Cultural Blender, written in 2002. Some of the thoughts in this piece originated in the essay on the main page to the Cartoons site. I predicted that with computer animation heading in the direction in which it has finally arrived, non animated films can now visualize anything in the minds of the directors. Too bad most of the imagery is being applied to substandard fare, however.
@suzyQ_darnit - Dear Suzy. Nobody remembers Crusader Rabbit. (Well, except the few who dedicate YouTube pages to him.) That's why in my "cartoon" I have Bugs Bunny telling him "They'll remember me. Nobody will know who you are, I'm afraid."
@XndraXstz - Dear Sandra, I have sericels (actual cell artwork, but made as fine art instead of for cartoons) of Betty Boop created by Myron Waldman, an animator on the Boop series from the 30s, which I bought in the 90s. (He passed away in 2006) One of these pieces is 34/100 and cost me over $500.00 in 1996. I also have about $3000.00 worth of Betty Boop collectible figurines and porcelain dolls.I guess you could say I have a "soft spot" for her too!
@Krissy_Cole - Dear Krissy, I have a DVD of Snow White with extensive commentary which I might or might not have listened to completely. But I don't recall ever hearing that the witch was re-animated. The film was known as "Disney's folly" but the same naysayers who mocked it during production were the first to applaud it upon release. It was the most successful film in history until GWTW knocked it out in 1939.
@RockOfEadie - Dear Walter, 1 and 2 are generic comments. 3 is what happens to any cartoon character who drinks alum. 4 could be ANY road runner cartoon. 5 and 6 reference Bugs Bunny shenanigans. 7 is from Warner's answer to Chip and Dale, The Goofy Gophers, who spoke in English accents and were quite gay for their time. 8 is from an actual Popeye cartoon, but I can't remember the title.
@reckless_eagle - Dear Victor, I attempt to make the point that cartoons for the most part (discounting the dreck from the 80s, designed to sell merchandise) work on dual levels. Kids can laugh at the boisterous humor, and adults can "get" the more sophisticated satire and sarcasm. True , Wile E Coyote is a slave to his greed , lust, and hunger. (And possibly to the Acme Corp. ) Road Runner might sometimes "use his mind" but he also runs very fast.

Not sure if I'll be linking F_G this time around, but I suppose I could put up something, but I don't have time for much visiting. Only one day off this week, and as you can tell at my blog, I've had a busy and tiring week in my real life.
If I do post on cartoons, it'll be something to do with Tom and Jerry, and Steamboat Willie. But my favorite "cartoon" ever was a political cartoon (but I'm trying to avoid politics) from when Kennedy was running against Nixon in 1960. JFK was riding a donkey, and RMN was riding an elephant, and they were traveling through African bush country and RMN was obviously in a position to have better visibility, given that he was up high and all, and could see all of the dangers lurking. He had the grizzled look of experience (5 o'clock shadow) on his face, while JFK, whose head didn't come up as high as the overgrown weeds, had this naive look of wonderment on his face but he was completely unaware of whatever it was -- a snake, I think -- that was lurking just beyond the next weed. I was reminded of this during McCain v. Obama, and if I could draw and if I could have submitted a cartoon to the newspaper, I would have plagiarized the idea, except I'm glad I didn't have the skills because I was for Obama, as you know. (And still am.) I was also for Kennedy in '60, but I still thought that was a terrific cartoon.

@Loonsounds - Dear Jyoti, You might notice that Felix the Cat is walking across the crosswalk (from his namesake auto dealership in downtown L.A) In the last composite image. On another matter, I still get a "page not found" message from Xanga when I try to access your blog. I've even tried with other browsers and by typing the URL into the window. No success. This worries me greatly. I've left a comment on the Xanga Team chatboard but they never contact me about other things. Thank you for the recommend. I'd return comments but I just can't get to your blog. (Not even by trying to go there from Facebook!) Yikes.
@tialoca_talks - Dear Tia, Jonny Quest (no H) was another Hanna Barbera prime time cartoon series, which was on only for one season in 1964-65, when I was in the 6th grade. It wasn't the one with the real mouths. That was "Clutch Cargo" which aired back in 1959. The animation was almost nonexistant, and they superimposed real moving lips over the cels. I have a drawing of him in the "flip book" at the top of my entry, but to be coy, I superimposed Julia Robert's lips on the image. NyukNyuk.
@nidan - Dear Jimmy, Although YouTube is rapidly removing a lot of the stuff which is "copyrighted" (including the soundtracks for my videos, even though I always credit the music) some early cartoons can still be searched for and found there. Last Christmas, I found Mr.Magoo's Christmas Carol, my favorite version of this oft told tale originally written by Charles Dickens. The Magoo version includes some really great music and one of my all time favorite songs, All Alone in the World. I'm pretty happy that I can almost instantly find all my favorite cartoons nowadays, cause when I was young, there was no internet, nor home video, and you only were able to see the cartoons when they happened to air. (On only 7 channels.)!
Oh yeah, how could I forget Popeye? And I remember Johnny Quest too, although vaguely. Wow, Mike, you sure know a lot about the cartoon history; very impressive! Thanks, it was very interesting to read!
I used to watch Tom Hatten on KTLA every Saturday and Sunday morning. Popeye and then the Family Film Festival made for many a great weekend morning!
Very interesting post, Mike! I remember some of the cartoons you've spoken of and so agree with you on this having been the "golden age" of kid's TV. I especially miss watching The Bugs Bunny Show! So many great characters in that cartoon that have never lost their appeal. Animation is a subject that has always interested me.
I grew up on Loony Tunes, Felix the Cat and reruns of those old Merrie Melodies and such. I liked the early Scooby Doo and some of those costumes kid shows by Sidd and Kroft during the very early 70's.
I miss waking up early on Saturday morning eager to grab some cereal and turn on the tv...
It was kind of like a drug...
I forgot... I grew up in West Covina and remember Sheriff John and Hobo Kelly. Hobo Kelly was kind of androgynous which really fascinated me.
Also was Felix the Cat. When I was very young I couldn't figure out if he were male or female because of his high voice.
I got all of my ideas about New York city and the big city and moving here from those early cartoons too!
