A Tale of the Teeth

Frankly, I'm a bit tired of all this change and wish I could get a break to just relax and settle into some kind of routine again. Seems like every time I think that the changes are leaving me, another one comes knocking at my (relatively new) front door. Was it only two weeks ago that my orthopedist told me I was free of the cane, and could walk on my own? This news was just so delicious, sparking my latent exercise program. Now I'm competely pain free (in my hip and leg) and have been continuing my "power walks", taking lots of swims, and adding to the regimen of leg and hip exercises by doing sit ups and pushups. I can even cross my legs now. And I'm losing weight in the "beer belly".
About the same time as I was being given a clean bill of health for my hip, two more "problems" arrived. One, my "worry spots" reappeared. These are sores sort of like large pimples which appear sometimes on my face or somewhere on the top of my head. Usually, using a hot compress, I can coax the "poison" to the skin surface, where a head develops, which, when it releases, eases the pressure. (and the pain) I hadn't had any of these for months, and one suddenly appeared, and wouldn't come to a head. Two, the front two teeth on my bottom jaw, which were "dead" having been forcibly removed during an auto accident in my youth, and reinserted via root canal wires in 1968, started to wobble a bit. Usually, there is a plaque buildup in back of these teeth, and though loose, they hardly bother me. However, as an insult to injury, since I guess I was too happy about the great healing progress in my leg and hip, I started to have problems with my teeth. They got so loose, and bacteria began to build up in the gums, that the pain was becoming unbearable.
I have a great tolerance for most pain, having lived with it for most of my life in one way or another, but tooth pain is considerably worse than a lot of what I've suffered. After the car wreck, when I was 14, I had to go through hours of oral surgery, have braces put on for the second time, and some teeth were extracted by the oral surgeon to even up my bite. I seem to remember that I was told back then that in later life I might have problems with the "dead teeth". Seems like the best time for the universe to give me those problems was right after I became healed from the hip operation.
Eventually the "worry spot" on the top of my head broke it's bonds, and bled out, releasing pressure which was causing me some headaches, alleviated a bit by asprin. I want to talk to my doctor, who has a dermatologist on staff, next time I go in for a checkup, to see if there is any supposed "cure" for these swellups. At least the present one faded away.
Not so with the pain in my two bottom front teeth. I'm a bit aghast at the fact these teeth were hurting me. After all, they are not alive, but "dead" teeth. Of course it's the abcess which hurts, not the tooth itself. I've had loose teeth before, and sometimes years can go by before I needed them pulled. In fact, I never had the money to pay the thousand bucks it would cost to replace with an implant a molar I had pulled three years ago, and I believe this is what caused my present problems, with a snowballing effect. Thus, the pain in my jaw was all my fault, because I didn't listen to my dentist when he told me my teeth would start "shifting" a mysterious concept I only now am beginning to understand.
Since the "hole" caused by the vacated molar is not visible to those who might enjoy my smile, I never got it filled. It didn't bother me, in fact, the pain it was causing when loose went away, so for a few years I was satisfied. Then I noticed I was "clicking my teeth", which was a result of the "shift" in the other teeth next to the hole. This was on the top of my mouth, and shouldn't have affected the bottom jaw, but because the three teeth reinserted after the wreck were so high in my mouth (the one in the center was almost like a spire sticking above the rest) they would scrape against the top front teeth when I would bite down, and after a couple of years, they began to loosen even more. I "clicked" my teeth together when they would try to find the "bite" which by this time was almost nonexistant.
I'm always making plans, and one plan for 2010 was a complete dental checkup, to alleviate the "clicking" and do something about the bottom front teeth anyway. However, when they began to hurt uncontrollably a few weeks ago, I knew I would be making another "change" sooner than expected.
For one week, I smeared Anbesol, a pain relieving ointment, around the affected teeth when they really hurt bad. Directions state to use this ointment four times a day, and if the pain continues after a week, to go see a dentist. My plan wasn't to see a dentist until next year, so when the pain disappeared after a week, I didn't worry, and thanked God and my lucky stars that it went away.
Then last weekend it came back (with a vengeance). I began to have trouble eating and chewing, since these are the teeth at the front of my face. Early this week I carried the little tube of Anbesol with me to work! I complained about my condition to the guys and gals at work, and on Wednesday morning, I called my dentist's office and arranged for an emergency visit.
The doctor took one look at the teeth, gave them a wiggle, and told me they needed to be removed. I was thinking that this would entail some extensive work, with multiple visits, and an ending bill in the thousands of dollars. The molar I had removed a few years ago was treated over three visits, if memory serves, and the gums had to be stitched together, and then the stitches removed. I believe I had to have the bone built up under the pulled tooth as well. After only 45 minutes in the chair (and I was called in after only a 10 minute wait) the assessment was that two of the three "dead teeth" were incredibly loose, and bacteria building up in the space in my gums was causing the pain. The dental technician checked with my health insurance, and it would only cost me $3.00 each to pull the two teeth. I could get some kind of bone buildup, (at $165.00 a tooth) but that wasn't necessary. A "permanent bridge" would cost me $3,650.00 out of pocket, ( more than my complete hip operation is going to cost me). They could pull the two teeth right then if I wanted!
I asked about any other alternatives. "Do you still have removable partials available?" I asked. Of course they do, and one for the two front teeth would cost me a grand. "I think I'll go with that option", I said. "Do you have a payment plan?" Regrettably, they didn't. So out would have to come the credit card, enlarging my debt. However, the "temporary partial" which is made of plastic, and is supposed to be an interim device until having implants or a more substatial partial, was going to cost me $175.00 anyway. (They only charge three bux to pull each tooth, but know we need replacements, and that's where they make their money!) The assistant took some impressions for the temporary partial. My dentist scheduled me to come back at 4:30pm. And I left with a prescription for both antibiotics and pain medicine. I need the antibiotics because of the hip revision operation. In fact, when I had the operation, I was told I couldnt' have any dental work for three months. I was in the dentist's office almost three months to the day after my hip revision!
At noon I had a lunch appointment, and at 4:30pm I went back to the dentist. I've been quite lackadaisical about dental appointments, seeming to make them only when there is "an emergency", a point noted by my dentist, who had not only pulled the molar three years ago, but had worked on a crown extension and replacement in 2003. It took about 10-15 minutes to pull the two teeth and affix the temporary bridge. The local anaesthetic was injected into my bottom jaw with a large needle, and when the bridge was inserted, I could "feel" the difference immediately. The "new teeth" are even, and my bite is not perfect, but a lot better than it was. The gum pain from the abcess disappeared.
That evening, I took pain pills when the anaesthetic wore off, which was quite quickly, from what I remember from other dental work in the past. By 7pm, the pain had been reduced to a dull ache. I had to keep the bridge in for 24 hours, and last night I took it out for the first time. It's really strange not having my two bottom front teeth, but it's quite nice that I can put the new ones in and I look better than ever.
Nice that this latest change took place over the course of only one day! It was 8:30AM when I called the dentist's office and by 5:00PM I had my "new teeth" inserted. I asked why I would need to get another bridge, since this one looked okay to me. The doctor told me this was made of cheap plastic, but it might last for six months to a year, if I were careful. So the whole bill, including an "emergency charge" only cost me $186.00. That's reasonable. In fact, now I wish I had had this work done a long time ago, when I first detected looseness in the teeth in question.
Before I left the office, I made an appointment for a "regular checkup" and cleaning. They will take Xrays of all my teeth, and I'll see what else is needed. Maybe I'll have even more work done in 2010. It's Labor Day Weekend and I begin it with no pain at all. Hopefully I'll be able to stay that way for a while.

Nice price, but if six months is the time limit before you need more dental care, it seems possible you've only postponed the inevitable. It's great, certainly, that you've achieved relief. I just hope my negative hunch doesn't prove to be correct.
As for my recent situation (thanks for the comment), I asked the dentist again, while I was in the chair, what would have happened had I elected to wait until my dental insurance kicks in (October, just weeks away), he said that he wouldn't have been able to do what he did. I trust him on that. He said the abscess was fast-acting and would have created a very difficult situation for me.
I suppose I should just be thankful that I can afford what he charged. Made a heavy IRA withdrawal, which is taxable, but at least I'm healthy upstairs where I eat.
You were smart to get rid of those teeth - absessed teeth are a major source of all sorts of other complications - including major heart problems. You are lucky.
You sound to me like a pretty good argument for universal medicare. I know since we got on Medicare, we have had expenses that we never could have covered otherwise - and we are both very MD adverse - getting medical help as a last resort.
I'm glad you got this taken care of without too much drama or expense. It's great to hear that you're recovering so well to the hip surgery and that your heath seems to be even better than before. It's also good to hear your new outlook on blogging. I have a few good friends in real life who I encouraged to blog, and they always saw it as such a monolithic responsibility - that they'd have to be good at it. I know you don't have that pressure or the problem of writing well, but my point is that I have come to a personal understanding that my blog is for me and I owe nobody nothin'

Thanks for the encouragement to start teaching. You'll be happy to note this is my last semester (for real this time) and I was invited in to interview for an adjunct position at a community college but had to turn them down because it conflicts with this final class. However, I'm already posting for stuff in the spring and am excited to change or at least add to what I'm doing right now.

@twoberry - Dear Bob. There isn't a deadline by any means. According to my dentist, if the partial I just got doesn't break, then I won't really need another. They want to sell me implants, and that would be nice but the expense is too high. If I can afford it, I'll get the more stable partial and probably make that decision when I go in at the end of the month. I took a straw poll among some other seniors and most told me these temporary partials don't have that long a shelf life.
@tychecat - Dear Dick. So far I've only seen one itemized bill, for the internist at the hospital, and it was over $750.00, of which I had to pay a total of $50.00. After my deduction, which is $1000.00, I'll be paying 20% of the operation, which has so far been estimated at $3000.00. Our CEO, who is now 85, used both his PPO and Medicare for health insurance, when he became eligible for Medicare. What one didn't cover, the other usually did.
@BoureeMusique - Dear Emily, I used to break a sweat over not posting one of my "regular features", cause I hadn't prepared the graphics, or some such extraneous part of the entry. It's the words that count anyway, and as soon as I realized I really didn't need to go "all out", I am finding that blogging is becoming "fun" again. Of course knowing me, I'll be producing longer graphics laden posts all too soon. But for now, things are fine as they are.
I hate going to the dentist, I'm glad that your problem could be solved so easily! I especially hate the sound of the drill, and that odd taste when it's in use on a tooth . . .

Actually, your story might be good for me since I am way overdue for a check-up, cleaning and all that. I've got some dental coverage with my insurance, but it doesn't cover everything. This year I'm trying to hold the line on spending so as not to tap into my IRA. The other thing is that I just haven't found another dentist, and didn't feel very enthusiastic about the chain dental operation that I went to near me. I need to make time to find a dentist with the kind of office that's more personable and caring, I guess & will also accept my insurance plan. I told Twoberry my former dentist spoiled me. Unfortunately, he's no longer living.

I myself try to write as less as possible, since there is a lot of people who take writings in the worse possible way, a license to indulge.
One possible way to save money is getting used dentures and partials. (it is not legal in the US) They do it in poorer countries. The other possibility is to have a friend in the denture making business. I am lucky my neighbor is a dentist but I rather forgo without wearing dentures and not caring how people see my teeth missing.
I am lucky I have good vision. When you can see closeup, it is easier to really scrape placque away before it gets thick. Someone should write a book on how to massage gums....
