PhotoPost: What I did on my Labor Day Weekend
I'm almost ready to get out and about to take some photos outside my mobile home park, but I thought I'd post some photos concerning what I accomplished over the long Labor Day weekend. Labor Day is supposed to be a respite from labor, but I felt like doing some around the house. Below are some "before" and "after" photos.
BEFORE: This photo was taken in January 2009 before I moved into "my little house". It was raining. This photo shows the overgrown arborvitae hedges in front of my home. I trimmed these before going into the hospital, but never got around to cleaning up the rockbed. I finally got around to it this past Sunday, and one of my neighbors told me she thought I was going to suffer heatstroke.
AFTER: The rockbed can now be seen. Sadly, the hedges were so overgrown, that I couldn't trim them down as much as I wanted. My plan has been to trim them down to the bottom of the front windows. The third one from the left is so big that I cut into the woody branches, and would need a chainsaw to do any more cutting. Eventually, I want to get rid of the two in the center altogether, and utilize the cover over the trailer hitches for potted plants. I bought a blower at Home Depot and cleaned up a lot of the old dead plant matter in the rock bed. I still need to remove the rocks, lay some plastic, and deposit cleaned rocks back in the bed, but for now, this looks a lot better. The ariondack chairs in the carport I just got recently at CVS Pharmacy, and I take my weekend breakfast outside in this area. (In 2010 I'm going to get a porch on the other side of the home.) I also replaced a few broken edging stones in this area.
BEFORE: This is a photo from January showing the three brush cherry trees at the back of my lot. I was actually cited to trim these about a month ago, even though they'd been overgrown for at least three years. I didn't grouse much, although this was not a project I wanted to attack right now.
AFTER: I paid a gardener 70 dollars to trim the three trees about a month ago, so this work wasn't done over the weekend, and I didn't do it myself. However, the trees do look better trimmed to the same size. The center tree was so overgrown that a chainsaw had to be used to cut the branches. This rock bed was made before I went into the hospital in April and May, while I was still on crutches, and I still need to finish it by placing four more paving stones in the section next to the grass.
On Saturday I purchased these paving stones at Home Depot, and raked the rocks aside, evened up the area beside my car, trucked away some excess dirt, and evened up the stones, then replaced the rock. It took about four hours, and it was pretty hot out. Eventually, I'm going to add even more paving stones in this area. I like to back my car into the carport, so this allows me to step out on an even surface instead of the limestone rock.
Last time I showcased my living room, the seating area was a bit different, with the Lazy boy chair in the center in front of the bigscreen TV. After I got back from the hospital, I set up the couch as it is here, and arranged the pillows as they are, so it was more comfortable for me to sit while healing. I've had people over and there's only room for three of us to sit, so I do plan on getting a long sofa for this area next year, and move the Lazyboy further down into the corner. The love seat will go back where it was underneath the front windows.

Saturday and Sunday I worked quite a bit, and on Labor Day , after I did my wash, I went out to the pool. When I got back from the pool this afternoon, I thought I'd take a few shots of myself showing my summer tan. I did cheat a bit and suck in my gut for these photos, but I still think I look pretty good for an old guy of 56 who had major surgery just three months ago!
One last shot in my swimming trunks. My smile is genuine, now that I'm not feeling any tooth pain after last week's emergency pulling and bridgework! I hope I can keep this tan into the winter. Hey, I live in Southern California. Summer should last well into early November!

During that time I noticed that I had to do much of the heavy lifting - that included moving logs, firing up, running, and disposing of the chips made by our very large chipper as well as all the tractor, bulldozer, and brush-cutter work, but she did love just messing, laying out digging out and laying almost a mile of paths through our woods. Oh yes, I also cut the six acres of fields and lawns.
I must say, we really miss that place, but neither of us is now able to do any yard work - we even have to pay to get our rather small yard in FL cut.
