  • PhotoPost: Cloudscaping

    cloudscapingtitle

I'm so late with this PhotoPost that I almost forgot I didn't post it to the blog!!! These images, taken with the new Sony Cybershot at 7.2 megapixels on Jan. 21, 2008 (like the sign says) are some of the best culled from my Webshots Folder called, interestingly enough, "Cloudscaping". I announced the creation of the folder, and showed a doctored rainbow photo on the January 23rd "News and Notes". where I also announced that "Cloudscaping" the movie was in production. The following photos include some which are featured in the first section of the internet movie, which I should have finished any day now. (he promises himself)

    DSC00639

The first photo is the image from the title card above, but it also happens to be the best of the bunch featuring this cloudscape. I pulled over to the side of the road (where there is no parking), clicked on the emergency blinkers and started shooting. I concentrated on stills instead of video, although now I am using the video feature of the camera more than I did on Jan. 21st. I left the house right after I got home from work on a weekday because the clouds looked especially photogenic. You can see the silvery ocean, which shows up later, in the extreme bottom right hand side of the frame.

    DSC00650

This looks like it was taken in the wild somewhere, but is actually across the street from a Von's in the town of Rancho Palos Verdes, up on the peninsula, where I shot all these photos. I just loved the bare branches of the tree, and the cloudscape has just the right touch of menace. I was switching the filter on and off so I don't know which photos are filtered. I'm still experimenting with the camera. In order for these cloudscapes to work for me, there has to be more white than dark, with patches of blue. This image is my current screensaver at work.

    DSC00662

The angle is wider on this shot, and the clouds have moved a trifle. You might even say this is similar to the shot above, and maybe I shouldn't have put it here, but I wanted to show the slight differences between photos. I think the first one is the better, but this one shows more blue.  I really should have shot video of the various cloudscapes, but I was in fear of losing shots. I couldn't stay in the same place for long, and only had a couple of hours to take a few hundred photos.

    DSC00672

Here and below are a couple of different views in front of the fountain at the entrance to one of the golf courses on the peninsula. (I didn't make note and it's a month later. Sorry.) Needless to say, it was sprinkling but a few well heeled Palos Verdians were out on the links. I know I used the filter on this photo. I love the silvery sheen to the ocean in the distance.

    DSC00675

Here the conifer tree is framed by the post of one of the buildings at the entrance to the golf course. I have conveniently hidden the sun in both this and the above shot. It's behind the roof in this shot and behind the foliage in the shot above.

    DSC00686

I've walked a few steps down into the golf course, and this shot prominently shows the ocean, framed by a couple of palm trees.

    DSC00699

This is my representative photo of Santa Catalina island, which on clear days like the one on which I undertook this photo shoot, looks just like a mountain range rising from across the ocean. You can't drive to get there. You need a boat or a plane. This was taken later than the photos above, but I'm now looking south west instead of west. The sun is over to the right a bit in this photo.

    DSC00728

This photo is not doctored in any way. I came around the bend of the road heading back toward home, and it was sprinkling behind me, as the sun broke through the clouds and presented this wondrous rainbow, the first I've actually seen in about 8 or 9 years. I pulled over in a no parking zone again, flicked the emergency lights and started clicking away. I even left the car and crossed the street to the divider to get more of the rainbow.

    DSC00755

I can shoot clouds at any time. But the best photos are the ones which contain the best "cloudscapes". Since the wind is blowing, and the sun is sinking, (or going behind a cloud) and I'm driving, it sometimes takes luck and stamina to get the perfect shot. I do crop "in camera" as they say, and I "self edit" and delete the bad ones "on the roll" (Digital photography makes this a snap.)  But taking neat looking photos of clouds is not easy. Esp. here in SoCal where the sky is usually cloudless. As I took the final shots as the sun was sinking into the sea behind me, I figured I'd had a good "photo excursion".

Hey, "subscribers" and "friends" and anyone stumbling across this blog. I haven't received hardly ANY questions for the blogtag exercise. So I'll repeat (again) Here are the tag rules: Solicit questions from everyone about any subject.

That means you get to ask me a question. Any question, on any subject, and I must answer. There has to be some more questions. Ask away.......

  • Excellent pics!! I think we have the same camera. I really like it. I hardly have to think at all anymore when I take a photo. I used to take more cloud pics.

  • I LOVE your photos! Simply beautiful!

Sorry I don't have to energy to tag five people so guess I can't ask questions.

  • I hate to say it but I have no choice
I probably should pretend I've lost my voice
Or likewise pretend to be awed and adoring
But pictures of clouds are excruciatingly boring

My question: When are you going to make a new video?-- I've been hoping for a Betty Boop tribute or montage.

If you don't like that question for a blog meme, how about: What do you want to be when you grow up?

  • @roddymccorley - Dear Roddy, I'd be taking lots more if I lived in a place with more weather. There weren't many opportunities for a couple of years. I'm amazed at how many cloudscapes I've taken since 2004, when I got the first camera. A lot of them are in the "movie".

@nicumom - Dear Robin, I'm not tagging anyone. The string ends with me. Actually, a lot of folks are "playing" this and I thought it would be interesting. I guess I should have been more expicit. You can ask me a question, and you don't have to tag anyone either. I wonder if that's why I haven't been getting many questions.

  • @paison_de_moot - Dear Ben,

    Sadly I say,
    but without too much regret,
    The next movie's called
    "Cloudscaping", boring, you bet.

The opportunity presented itself. I do have footage for a third ElvisMovies compilation in a DVR lying around here somewhere. And plans are afoot for a "Mike's Video Blog" entry about my website, http://www.AllThingsMike.com

  • excellent pictures.  I have only seen a double rainbow twice in my life.  Thank you for sharing.

  • @baldmike2004 -  ah well, it'll probably be a big hit with the Geritol crowd.

I may be a boomer but I see clouds every day.
they are quite lovely because God made them that way
your background has clouds, good as any, I say
but if it it floats your boat, then photograph away

  • The 5th 6th and last photos are my favorite although they are all good... With 5 and 6 Ive always loved photos that have the sun just rising or setting its always an awesome image.....

  • Stunning photos!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (sorry, didn't even read the text)

  • Hello friend

It is hard for me to think of a question...
you have been so open about what you write....
way more than i can be

i am the kinda person who sees someone with a bump on the noggin....
and because i would not want the person to feel uncomfortable
i would not make mention of it

then i have found that the person was like ...
for pity sake she did not say a thing....
    did she not see it??????
    it is a raging eyesore

    see what i mean
is one of them ..treat the person the way u want to be treated ... BACKFIRE!!!!
    LOL

If there was something you would change in your life .... what would it be?

in return..i will say ...if i had it to do all over again....
i would not be as serious....
i missed alot by being born OLD...
and i would have started having kids sooner....
    as was really my destiny
so i could have had one more

i think that might be my only regret in life. (at least in the concrete choice department)
and my advice to the next generation would be ... DONT wait so long....
30 is OLD to start having kids
    IMHO

    so there you are ....
    i got to where i could ask u a question :)

maybe in my next life i will be more easy going LOL
    i sweat the small stuff
    yikes

  • Hi Mike!

I see that Xanga has been going through a ton of changes that I'm still getting used to. I don't even understand the mini thing! Anyways, I see that you are getting out and about with your new camera. I'll be going to Texas in March to visit Six Flags and take some pics myself.

Hopefully we'll get together sometime soon and have lunch and conversation :) .

  • Hi Mike,

Clouds are my favourite photo topic. Your pictures carries all the drama of the sky. The last picture is hands down, for me, the best of the series.

  • Really enjoyed seeing your cloud photos.  I confess I like taking shots of this type myself.  There is something amazing in the clouds on some days and it's hard to put a finger on just why things are so different.

    Lovely shots, all of them.

  • Ohmy gosh the lunar eclipse is over and the moon overhead is shining.... Oh well we have to wait until 2010 when the next one comes. At least you caught one rainbow....

No questions, just that sometimes it is great to explore the stuff that naturally is around us...

  • What did you do exactly X = 13 + 123 = 93 + 103 seconds ago?

You have to answer in full detail!

  • like the dark palm trees and the rainbow.  We had a beauty of a rainbow saturday here and the sky was all the colors of the rainbow ,too.  We used to call Palos Verdes-PV.  My friend from 8th grade on tells me almost daily if she can see Catalina from her condo patio and I threaten to come out there and see for myself. She lives in San Clemente now.

  • Question:  If you were to suddenly die today could you accept it as the ending of a satisfactory time on earth, or bitterly regret it as the termination of a life not yet fully lived?

Clouds are great.  The Netherlands is famous for them; all the old painters used to flock to the lowlands for the skyscapes.  I think the last shot is quite intriguing.

  • What gorgeous clouds. They actually tug at my heartstrings. I can't wait for spring to roll in and for those clouds to be more visible in my Ohio sky. And now I want to sing old country songs, "And the Thunder Rolls." (Except that's not an "old" song at all!)

  • Very nice I like to look at the clouds. I can't wait till the weather gets nicer and I can go watch the clouds for longer!

  • I really like the second picture and the last two. Heh, the last picture looks like a little ghostie-poof waving.

My question: when and how did you get into photography?

  • If you could reprogram one section of your past which section would it be?

  • Very nice pictures.I like the one with the conifer tree. lovely.

    Hope you are doing well.

  • Very cool pictures! I really like the texture of the trees in the fourth pic, the one by the golf course. And the rainbow, of course.

  • Very nice pictures!

Have you ever lived outside of California?

  • I am looking forward to the cloudscaping movie!

My question: If you could be president for a week, what would you change and why?

  • The double rainbow picture is wonderful. The other pictures are great too.

  • Hi colleagues, how is the whole thing, and what
you wish for to say concerning this post, in my view its truly
    awesome designed for me.
