    photopost

I purchased my Sony digital videocamera, with it's internal 1.2 megapixel still camera, in early 2004. My Xanga blog went online in May 04 and I created the above composite header for my "Photoposts" on Xanga. During 2005 and 2006 I took literally thousands of pictures, and I've been regularly "featuring" Photoposts on my blog, and uploading more inclusive photo folders to my Webshots Gallery. I decided to scale down my photographic "expeditions" in 2007 because I planned to get a new digital still camera this year. That didn't happen.  I've blogged about wanting an SLR with interchangable lenses, but these cameras are pretty expensive, and I'm still trying to iron out my credit card debt, and certainly I don't want to buy a new camera with a credit card, no matter how "easy" it might seem.

So now it's mid October, and I've only taken a few hundred photos. I don't see a new camera in my near future. I've got two and a half months left in the year, and my 2007 "Year in Pictures" post will not be too varied. In fact, because I haven't posted that many Photoposts this year, and it's been a while since the last one, I'm sort of posting "the Year in Pictures" post right now, just in order to put something on the blog. None of the photos have been shown here on WhenWordsCollide, and I've even dug deep in the archives and have included some photos from 2005 in order to fill out the post.

    DSC01044

1-4/24/07 Malcolm the cat in repose. We begin with a photo of Cancerboy's cat Malcolm in her favorite "pose". Here she is on top of the dining room table. Her latest "resting area" is on the top of the sofa in the living room. She and her sister Spike are almost 20 years old. I can remember clearly when they were just kittens. (Bob, Joel's roommate at the time, didn't know the kittens were female when he named them!)

    DSC01144

2-5/12/07. Huntington Library Cactus Garden. I've been on very few "photo expeditions" this year. In May I took my camera to Huntington Library and Art Gallery, specifically to get photos of plant life for my video "Floral Dreams".

    DSC01362

3-5/12/07. Roses at the Huntington Rose Garden. Here are some of the blooms in the Rose Garden at the Huntington. I'm amazed at the floral pics I've seen on some Xanga blogs, taken by amateur photogs with high quality cameras developing more than 5 megapixels. I saw a videocamera at Best Buy last weekend with a 6 meagapixel still camera built in. It was on sale for under $500.00. It pains me to think that all the photos I've taken in the past three years aren't as sharp and detailed as they could be with a better camera.

    DSC01453
4-6/30/07. The Focault Pendulum at Griffith Park Observatory.  This is an interesting composition showing the large gold ball at the end of the pendulum in the center of the Griffith Observatory, which just opened up this year after a couple of years of renovations. The pendulum swings in a circle, illustrating the turning of the Earth.

    DSC01481

5-7/1/07. The full moon shining above the Norms Restaurant on Pacific Coast Highway.  When I finally get a nice camera, my "moonshots" will be brighter and more detailed. If I adjust the exposure to get the sign, the moon is bright. If I dial down the exposure to get the detail of the moonscape, the rest of the photo goes dark.

    DSC01493

6- 7/1/07. The Full Moon.  Each full moon, it seems there are never any clouds around, so I attempt to find "stuff" to shoot through or around to get a better composed photo.

    DSC01661

7- 7/22/07. The Breakers on Ocean Blvd. Long Beach, CA. The main reason I made a "photo expedition" along Ocean Blvd, which also resulted in 2007's MikeVideo "Greetings From Ocean Blvd.", was because it didn't cost anything. I've tried to use as much "free" footage as possible in my recent videos and photoposts.

    DSC01731

8- 7/22/07. Outside  P.F. Changs. The Pike. Long Beach.  Also taken when I took my "photo walk" along Ocean Blvd. in Long Beach this past summer.  The asian horse statues are magnificent, and flank the opening of the restaurant.

    DSC01782

9- 7/22/07. An alleyway off Ocean Blvd. A study in abandoned areas along the oceanfront.

    DSC03957

10- 7/17/05. A Carnival Cruise ship docked beside the Queen Mary.  I went back into the archives for the next few photos. Here is a cruise ship in Long Beach harbor, in a photo taken from the deck of the Catalina Express when I visited Catalina Island in 2005.

    DSC04008

11- 7/17/05. Catalina Island inlet from the mountains. This is a shot of one of the bays on Catalina Island, shot from up in the hills. A cruiser and a speedboat can be seen in the distance.

    DSC03676

12- 7/10/05. Los Angeles from Elysian Park. A shot of the city skyline from the hills around Dodger Stadium, shot in July of 2005.

I certainly hope I can get a new camera by Christmas. I'm looking forward to using my bonus this year for the purchase. I might not get a full SLR. There are some less expensive cameras on the market with built in wide angle lenses. Only a couple of the photos above use the wide angle, but most of my photos are landscapes, and the wide angle comes in handy, and makes for some interesting compositions. Here's looking toward a much better "photo year" for 2008 (and maybe even for the end of 2007!)

  • I never realized the intense quality that a photographer wants in taking pictures.  Good pictures, though.

  • As usual I enjoyed your photoblog very much. The The Focault Pendulum at Griffith Park Observatory is by far the most interesting composition of the above pictures. i will have tosettle for my 2MB pics taken by cellphone until I can get a cell phone with better capabilities. In the mean time, I enjoy my photography for the sake of itself. The pic's looses some quality in any case when it is published on the internet.

  • :heartbeat: i have the same feeling about my little camera. i have explored its potential and used it to the max and my skills have grown along with it--- so it's time for a new one, but i don't think it'll be under the tree or wrapped in bday paper this year. i love some of these pics a lot. the full moon is beautiful and the long scenery shots take me with you and allow me to see what you're seeing.

  • I know what you mean about wanting a new camera!  I really debated when I replaced my digital camera recently.  You just cannot get the same quality of a really nice SLR - but boy, are they expensive!  It's hard for me because I used to have a nice 35mm camera, with lots of filters and such, so I know the quality that is possible, but I can't justify the expense to myself, so it was another digital for me!  Still, maybe someday...

And I think the quality of the pictures you have taken with your camera are amazing!  It's hard to make the photos look decent online, anyway, and you have done a great job.

  • Every picture tells a story.
    What great compositions, Mike.

  • i like the pendulum the best. it looks more like a planet.

  • I love the photos. You have the life!

                                                               Mike

  • Love the Cactus Garden

  • My favorites:  The cat, because cats love to pose.  I had a cat live to the age of 22.  The red roses, because they remind me of the old fashioned pink rose bush in my back yard.  The full moon--that's such a lovely shot!  The Asian horse statue, because if I'd been there that's exactly where I'd have aimed my camera.  The Carnival cruise ship, because in '06 I boarded one just like it there in Long Beach for a cruise to Mexico.  It's the only time I was ever in California, but your photos always make me want to go back for a nice, long explore!

  • I liked the cat but the full moon, as always, is my favorite. You zoom it and enlarge the moon if you can.

  • Wow your cats are almost 20 years old? Your kitty looks healthy.

  • Wonderful shots!  I think we always want better photos, but these were just super, Mike.  They sure brought back memories for someone that was born in CA and hasn't been back in far too long and probably wont get home again ever.  hehe.  So you just keep on snapping and sending!  Can't tell you which I enjoyed most, because each one was special.

    Huggers, Ethel

  • It's amazing what can be had with 1.2 megapixels. Your pics are always wonderful, and I would never know from their quality that the camera wasn't a dslr. That being said, used dslrs are starting to be sold pretty commonly and for not toooooo much (depending upon the camera) on craigslist. If you haven't gone to craigslist yet, do check it out. Go into the For Sale section and Photo+video. I sold a gentlemen my kit lens fromo my dslr for $40 the other months. He had picked up the very same camera that I bought new Used, and was pretty happy with himself. I imagine, in the next few years, better and better digital cameras will become available more cheaply to buy retail AND cheaper used because people will want to upgrade with technology. Within five years, the camera market is going to bust open to amatuers, allowing us access to pro-grade photography for much less money. Technological advances are just coming soooo fast. You wait.

  • Hi there. It's nice to see you again!  Thanks for stopping by.  That long inside of the arm tattoo was quite painful.  I knew it would be... I don't recommend getting a tattoo there to those with a low pain tolerance! lol  Glad you enjoyed the painting. It got a much better response overall than I anticipated.  Sometimes simplicity really is best I think.

I really liked your essay on stupidity.  I agree - the real stupid stuff is when we know better but do it anyway. That morph you made of yourself is pretty cool too!  I've seen the morpheus software.  We almost used it on a project at work.  I didn't get to play with it much, but it seems like a cool tool.  Very nice photos above.  I liked seeing Foucault's pendulum.  I read the Umberto Eco book Foucault's Pendulum several years ago and it just kind of stuck with me... an awesome piece of work!

I hope you and your loved ones are well and happy

  • Oh! Nice pics! I love LA, it's so beautiful when it's sunny with all the palm trees! And I love the horse! That's a great one! Nice job! -QL

  • Mike, I personally like the cats and their names.  I think names are names.  Now, if either had had a string of syllables strung out together and in any order, I could have thought differently.

I keep thinking about starting a campaign to make parents wait to give a child a permanent name until the kid is about 13 or 14.  Then a child must have a real name (nothing made up) for a first name, and then any bunch of syllables they or the parents want to call a name.....  It would make things easier, for everyone.

People ask what is wrong with the youth of today?  I think it is the name of the creature.  To be able to name the thing-is to control the thing....many names today are not really names, just something made up.  Now, I know lots of people will argue, but even God wouldn't let Moses know the name God prefers to be called.  Because "to name it, is to control it."

Sorry I blogged on your comments, but sometimes you just have to let thing go.

  • I have a 'user friendly' Sony Cybershot too.I want a better camera but am holding out to next year, unless I can weasel one out of my husband for Christmas!! The Sony is a good family camera but not great for a shutterbug.

    Your pix are lovely.

  • The Carnival cruise ship is MASSIVE!  Being a former Navy man I like ships. Great pictures!

  • I think your "old" camera takes great pictures!  I've been thinking about a new camera, too.  Maybe next year.  I remember seeing your tour of Ocean Blvd.  Fun trip.

I especially like the photo of the observatory pendulum.  Wouldn't have been able to figure it out if you hadn't told us what it is.  Neat composition.
