  • Three Year Xangaversary Celebration: Part 2

    wayback

The following entry was originally posted on this blog on May 30, 2005, and is being reposted as part of my "3rd Xangaversary Celebration." It's a little early for the holiday, but never too early for the thoughts that go with it. MFN

    "Memorial Day"
    Poetry by Michael F. Nyiri
    May 30, 2005

Flowers strewn with grief and tears
    Hold a breath for freedom
War and pain, young life it shears
In our dreams we see them
    Marching forth for victory
Shot dead on hills and plains
Raise the flag of thee I see
    Hopeless pains and wracking brains
God grant peace in time of war
As young life ends in Memorial silence
Yet bodies fall without a care
    Can nothing stop this violence?
Pray for young lives in the ground
Life missing, lost, right here, right there
And thought for naught, no instance sound
Will mankind 'ere wake from his nightmare?

    General Order # 11

HEADQUARTERS GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC
    Washington D.C. May 5, 1868
    General Orders No. 11

    I. The 30th day of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or other decorating the graves of  comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land. In this observance no form of ceremony is prescribed, but Posts and comrades will, in their own way, arrange such fitting services and testimonials of respect as circumstances may permit.

    In Flanders Fields
    By John McCrae

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly.
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
    In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
    In Flanders fields.

On May 30th, 2004, I created my very first Xanga Blog entry. I planned yesterday to begin with a photopost of the pictures I took at the Getty Museum on Saturday. Then I would post something commesurate with the fact that I've been blogging here on this service for a year. I was going to ask my readers to see if I could get my first 20 comment blog post. Grand plans and designs, as usual. Yesterday I posted my review for the new Star Wars picture. A fellow Xangan has included me in a game of tag. So much seems to be going on, but this morning when I awoke, I thought not of Xangaversaries, or photos of Art Museums, or of lists of books and challenges. I thought of the thousands of dead soldiers littering the fields of Gettysburg, of Omaha Beach, of Korea, and Vietnam, of Afghanistan, and of Iraq. (And other countless fields in other countless wars, where Americans are not even involved.)  I stopped for a short moment to shed a tear for the stupidity that keeps sending these poor young lives into oblivion year after year after year. I created the above image as a tribute to the soldier. The full size image can be clicked upon and enlarged. Memorial Day is an American Holiday, established after the Civil War, a conflict when, suspiciously like the very time we live in, almost half of the country disagreed with the other half, culminating in a war that literally pitted "brother against brother". Although the soldiers presented are American soldiers, I have deliberately not portrayed the American Flag nor Eagle in this composite. The poppy and field of flowers used for the background are meant to be a Universal Memorial to all the world's dead. Our friends and our enemies. Our brothers and sisters. War is fought for ideas and ideals, and it is the "young life" of all races, creeds, and nations who pay the price. I have always believed in peace, and in humankind's strength and werewithal to be able to come together and resolve the petty problems and  differences of opinion which cause so much bloodshed on a global scale. I am but one man, attempting to dry my eyes of their tears. I bless the fallen, and I pity the living.

When indeed, will mankind 'ere wake from his nightmare?

EDIT: 5/25 7:00 p.m. pdt: I received 14 comments on this Memorial Day post from 2005 and 21 comments on my Memorial Day (Xangaversary Post) in 2006. Among the readers who I still count among "friends" and who still visit from 2005 are thenarrator , jerjonji , Dosmangoes , knightingale , screaminginmyhead , closethippie , maureenrose (when she decides to blog) ,razorwords (now using her name, SitaStrangling , but rarely blogging, 8 of 14. And threre's 12 of 21 still visiting from 2006.  suzyQ_darnit  , The_Queen_Of_Swords , paison_de_moot  ,  Bronco_Bear, who is now Bear_photographer , jassmine, soccershades7 , mourning2dancing , LadyArual, Oz_girl ,  thereluctantsinger , Emjay1 . That was a neat exercise. I like these numbers. Thanks to everyone who keeps me interested in keeping my blog on Xanga. (Even though I know I'm going to have to give into their "themes" eventually) where community blogging was invented.  MFN.

  • People teach violence every day, and rarely teach peace. They hit their children. They support leaders who fight wars. They turn a blind eye to torture and human degradation. And the result is the blood of the young spilled into the earth around the globe.

I always like "The Body of an American" (which I've put up on some Veteran's Days) - John Dos Passos brilliant last chapter of his incredible book 1919:

"In the tarpaper morgue at Chalons-sur-Marne in the reek of chloride of lime and the dead, they picked out the pine box that held all that was left of

enie menie minie moe plenty of other pine boxes stacked up there containing what they’d scraped up of Richard Roe

and other person or persons unknown. Only one can go. How did they pick John Doe?

Make sure he aint a dinge, boys,

make sure he aint a guinea or a kike,

how can you tell a guy’s a hundredpercent when all you’ve got’s a gunnysack full of bones, bronze buttons stamped with the screaming eagle and a pair of roll puttees?

. . . and the gagging chloride and the puky dirtstench of the yearold dead..."

    Hi Mike
I love the way you keep up with details
of your first xanga day and such. Makes one
    smile

On a serious note...We must remember that this
Country was founded on violence...it was not discovered
    it was taken...so enough said.

  • I doubt mankind will ever learn. Neverthe less, it's up to each one of us to do whatever it is in us to take us into that direction.

If you have any furhter trouble reading my posts, let me know and I'll do my best to make things more readable.

  • some neat poetry thanks...

  • I read a lot of "violence-prone" books, but I am not necessarily a violent person. What is it about war stories that is interesting? Well maybe I try to learn about warfare because to know war is to avoid war. Too bad Bush seems to have not studied warefare and doesn't know the horrors of war....

Should Death be a required area of study? Many folks try to ignore their own mortality and thus memorial day consists of bar b-ques and holiday fuss, but hey that is in its own way indicative of how America's spirit is redirected....

I guess you find learning how to video tape interesting, well you do live near to Hollywood (relatively to the rest of xangians). I guess you have that urge to achieve fame or immortality. I guess your investment in money and time was rewarded but not in the way you imagined. Yes it may be rare to get 20 comments, but maybe you'll get a whole bunch of hits too!

  • Dear Mike,
Nice commemoration in picture and words. I do wonder why so many people seem to be against war, and yet it is such a "big business", far exceeding domestic spending. I so do not believe in countries or borders, it is one world and one people. People die for "hills", and they do not know why.

ryc: Thx for your comment and profile pic, they made me smile. Needed that. (and for the hint on fonts)

    ~ Peace ~

  • Congratulations with your Xangaversary

I started blogging on Xanga on 28 Dec 2004. I wrote: "I believe every person is on his/her own path. Through sharing our paths we will enrich ourselves with a sense of meaning and purpose. The possibility of a path being wrong is higher than the probability of it being right. The principle of equifinality states that there are more than one way to the same end. My path might not be the correct path for others for we celebrate as human beings an infinite array of variety. What is important is that we never reach a point of complacency with our path. The first lesson I have learned is that to travel on a path we need to take a first step. The second lesson is that we should always allow ourselves to challenge out way. Without the openness to challenge our path we will stagnate. We will have different expectations when we embark on our journey and what might work for the one might not work for the other. Each person walks alone on his/her path, but through our collective conscious we can take hands and share what we experience. Within that sharing it is possible to find new perspectives on what we perceive as truth. Ultimately there is no truth but only our best guess of the truth...tempered by our experience, insight and level of being. ". This seemed to have remained the central theme of my blog over the two and a bit years.  My first comments were from Turtle_Dove and Queen_of_Swords. I wonder when we first linked up. I always maintained that those loyal Xangans who keep visiting over a long period of time are precious. Not fully the whole three years...I enjoyed the journey with you. Your stories and poems and photoblogs always had something to think about, ponder or smile at. I hope that it is long from being the end of the road and that you will still continue for some time on Xanga.

Here's a toast ot all those brave young men. -May God bring peace to our land and to those lands of our fellow men, and until then may you fight valiantly and with honor.
