Movie Reviews
This weekend I rented the film “Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow” which I missed in theaters but which I have been looking forward to seeing, and rented it on DVD. I’m glad I didn’t buy it without first seeing it, because it isn’t as fantastic as I had hoped. The “look” is far too stylized, and the pulp serial nature of the plot is instantly forgettable. Kerry Conran is obviously an artist, and he wanted the “look” to resemble old b&w serials. Why didn’t he just go completely with monochrome? When filmmakers wash the color out to make their films “resemble” black and white, the film merely looks like washed out color to me. “The Fifth Element” has better CGI, and “Raiders of the Lost Ark” has a better plot. However, I did make it out to the movies. My friend wanted to see “Sideways” but I needed to see Clint Eastwood’s latest, up for 7 Academy Awards.
I just wrote a review for this multiple Oscar nominated film “Million Dollar Baby” which can be accessed from the “Reviews” section. I wrote the review rather quickly, but wanted to put something up here tonight prior to going to bed. I saw the movie yesterday, and while I believe it is unflinching and powerful, I don’t think it is for everyone. Tomorrow I shall post some new photography taken on a beautiful day in Los Angeles after another one of our many winter rainstorms passed. There is a separate comments section for the review, and there are four of five more reviews I’ve written since joining Xanga on the same page.

Edit: 1/31/05 Xanga has had some problems with the links to the reviews sections, and it has been noted in a couple of comments. This morning I had no problem with the link. But I can’t access links to “reviews” on other sites. Wouldn’t you know it. I’ll try to see if I can find a way to alert this to the people running the Xanga portal.
