  • A Tale of the Teeth (Part 2)

    "A a a r r r g g g h h h"

    It hurts.

    It hurts bad.
I'm in pain as I write this.

(My hip operation was two years ago! I didn't think I'd be in this much pain so soon, but there you go.)
This pain is a simple toothache, possibly the worst pain known to mankind.

Back in September of 2009, I posted an entry titled "A Tale of the Teeth". It was a lighthearted look at what happened after I found out I had to have two bottom teeth removed because of terrible pain caused by exposed nerves. (See accompanying photo at the bottom center of my open mouth, in a rare shot without my partial in place)  I had just had a major hip revision operation and shouldn't have been subjected to any real amount of pain only three months later, but I was, and I had the offending parts of my body removed. The article explains that the dentist to whom I offered said teeth pulled them for only three bucks, but wanted to charge me over three grand for a permanent replacement bridge. More money, it was noted at the time, than for my entire hip operation, which, it also might be noted right now, I still haven't completed paying for (although I only have two more $100.00 payments and that little inconvenience will be overcome).

This entry will be shudderingly titled "A Tale of the Teeth Part 2" I have to have another tooth pulled. (And probably, like TODAY.) I'm in pain. Terrible pain. I've waited long enough. I really can't afford more expense. But I simply can't stand it anymore.

I always like to start these little "pain" essays with a rundown of my "lifetime of pain." 1. Complications during my birth (which also caused the death of my twin sister). I'm told my head was almost crushed. There are lots of indentations in the back of my old baldy skull. 2. Dislodged eardrum in 2nd grade. Caused me to miss almost a quarter of school that year, and besides the pain, I couldn't keep my balance. 3. Migraine headaches. I used to begin each week with a whopper of a headache when I was in elementary school and junior high. Couldn't see either. Got my first pair of glasses at  age 11. 4. Broken jaw at age 14. From a car wreck. Had to cut up my sandwiches for years cause I couldn't bite or chew real well. I had lots of oral surgery back then, and this really soured me on dentists, by the way. 5. My left hip. Congenital defects possibly from birth caused me to have to have a hip replacement at the age of 41. (I was falling down a lot when the blood flow to my leg would get pinched off by the cartilage buildup around my ball and socket.) This is the prosthesis which I had to have replaced a couple of years ago. I had pain in my left leg and hip for most of my life.

I've been telling everyone I'm pain free for pretty much the first time in my life. I'm doing pretty well getting myself back on track financially too after a  decade or so of spendthrift ways using lots of little pieces of plastic. Everything seemed to be going fine, and then of course you know the old adage, when it rains.....yessir. (And we've been getting an awful amount of rain here in SoCal, so maybe that was an omen.) I had to get a set of tires for my car last weekend. I waited till the treads were gone, and the tires just started to leak air on their own. Emergency expense: $400.00 I now have to get a wiggling molar removed which began to get loose and periodically cause toothache pain back in 2007 or so, possibly even when I got it's opposite molar removed a year earlier! Emergency expense: Not calculated yet. (I'm a bit shy on space rent for my mobile, and have to come up with $800.00 for Uncle Sam by the 18th of next month. Am I worrying? Is this a worrisome turn of events? What, Me Worry?)

I wrote "The Tale of The Teeth"  after having my two bottom teeth pulled and a temporary partial created. It cost me $175.00 (a better deal than the permanent partial for $1000.00 or the permanent bridge for the price of a small car.) I've had the temporary partial since Sept. of 2009. It took only one day for the dentist to pull my teeth, make an impression, have the partial constructed, and install it in my mouth.

I'm writing this at 7:30 in the morning on the day I'm probably going in to have the other molar removed. The dentist's office isn't open for another half hour. Hopefully they can fit me in.....hopefully as soon as possible.

It'll only be $3.00 to pull the tooth. That's the easy part. (The pain goes away instantly, too.) Then they're going to pitch all kinds of expensive toothsome alternatives for me. I'll take a temporary partial, joined to the other molar for which I never had an implant of partical constucted, cause it was too expensive in the first instance, and couldn't be done without pulling another tooth in the second.

All I can say right now is.

    You guessed it.

    AAArrrggghhh!

EDIT: 04/01 7:30am. I have an appointment for 9:30am. Couldn't get out of the office yesterday cause it was last day of the month. Lost of panels to ship. I waited till almost absolutely the last minute to get this done anyway, and it's so weird that just last week I was happy that my tooth hadn't hurt me in a few weeks, meaning I wouldn't need to have this tooth extracted for a while yet. WRONG. MFN/ppf

  • Oh, dear! So sorry that you have so much pain again. Worrying about money when you are in pain makes it worse still. My beloved has a toothache right now and is in bed loaded up with extra-strenght Tylenol, waiting for the dentist to call with a cancellation if there is one. Otherwise, next week... Meanwhile, I've loaded up on post-extraction foods for her like ice cream, pudding and mushroom soup just in case we get lucky today. I hope you have a beloved to fuss over you. Good luck today.

  • Ouch!!!  I'm sorry --

  • Unexpected expenses can really suck. As can unexpected losses of income. (I haven't worked in almost two weeks and that is gonna hurt)

I'm glad I got the knee surgery done, though. I feel so much better. You will too!

  • Hang in there, Mike! This too shall pass.

  • Ugh, I am so sorry.  I hate dentists and unfortunately, tooth problems are a cross I have to bear.    I hope by the time you read these comments, you are in less pain.

  • 3 bucks?  wow I had to have a back tooth pulled and it was $300.00 are you sure that wasn't a typo?

  • Sorry you got to have to another tooth pulled. I've never had any teeth pulled, but I have had tooth aches and they aren't fun.

  • Pain is strange - and apparently pretty subjective. I have, according to my MDs had so much arthritic pain for so long that I have a high threshold - When I had both knees replaced six months ago I was constantly being asked to rate the pain (1 to 10) and never got above 2-3 ,mild discomfort, which concerned to nurses. I was up and walking after only a few days, driving the car within 10 days and dropped therapy after eight sessions. I'm not boasting, that's just the way it is.

On the other hand, I do take 150 MG of Indomethecin daily, and have for years - that keeps the discomfort at a minimum.Speaking of teeth, recently I had my bottom partial plate replaced and the dentist recommended an all-plastic rather light appliance. It looks and feels like a temp but he says it will last longer than I will.It was much cheaper, is quite comfortable and seems to work - ask your DDSOne thing about teeth - when they go bad they can pretty quickly involve heart trouble so you are quite right not to screw around  - get them fixed ASAP.

  • I've got a really good FF post up if you're interested.

  • @nurseynursey - Dear Emily, Nobody to fuss over me, but I'll be in a lot less pain later on today. (4/1)

@flatpick46 - Dear Randy, During my 20s and 30s I never wanted to see a doctor for anything. At the age of 40 (thanks in large part to the HMO at work) I began to get all my ailments fixed. I tell people I feel better now approaching 60 than I did at 30 cause I was in a lot of pain from the hip back then! I'll be sure and check out FF. Hope you get work soon. I'll pray for you and direct some positive energy your way!

@momofjenmatt - Dear Laura, With my HMO plan, it's only $3.00 to pull a tooth. (Or was a few years ago, I'll find out what it is today at 9:30 this morning. It's replacing the tooth that's expensive. Unless of course, if surgery is needed.

@tychecat - Dear Dick, You mentioned the connection between toothaches and heart trouble when I posted the original "Tale of the Teeth" entry in 2009. Great that you have a high threshold too. Mine is pretty high, since I've lived with pain all my life, but after being pain free for a year or two, this hurts even more, if you know what I mean.

  • Hey, Mike. nurseynursey's name is Judy not Emily. That's okay. It must be the drugs.(I hope the tooth is out and they gave you some drugs....)

  • I am waiting in anticipation for episode III

  • I agree that tooth pain is the worst pain know to man and anyone else who has never been in childbirth labor.
Hope you get it all fixd up soon!

  • Sorry you're having this pain.  I too dislike dentists.  Even just a cleaning is cause for a xanax and a shot of something strong beforehand.  I don't envy you but I WILL say a prayer or two... for the end of your pain, and a non expensive alternative!  Good luck!

  • I have an idea of what you're going through. And dentists wonder why we don't like to go to them. I finally had to have a bottom molar pulled in previous year. The enamel had broken and if there was a filling in it, it all fell out. Well, the dentist I went to for help with that, wanted to do all sorts of expensive things with the rest of my mouth. I got him to ground down the edges of the broken tooth, a molar, because the edges were catching my tongue and making it sore. I rejected all the other things he wanted to do. Would cost over $4500 & my insurance would not cover. I wrote about it on my blog. Then that broken tooth became too sensitive to everything & hurt. So, I had to ask for it to be removed. The hygienist noted that he wanted to remove the one next to it as well. I reiterated that I wanted only the sensitive tooth removed. Also, an upper left molar lost part of its enamel. He has not seemed very concerned to do anything about that, although he mentioned it might need to be crowned. I'm not having any pain with it, so it'll be left alone for now. However, this year I'm going to find another dentist closer to me to get my teeth cleaned and maybe another opinion. Besides, the former dentist's office hours seem to be limited. It's not open very late in afternoon and not at all on Friday. I think dental services have become ridiculously high, but pulling a tooth should not cost much. My insurance did cover the one pulled, but I don't remember how much was charged. If you got yours pulled for only $3.00, that's a good deal.

Now that your tooth is out, I hope you are feeling better. ~~Blessings 'n Cheers
