Coming Soon: The Xanga "Featured Project"
Here's another "teaser" for a project on which I'm working.I just spent about two hours compiling these images. I won't tell you where I got them, but it was and wasn't Xanga!
I'm working on a "Xangaspecific" MikeVideo right now, and part of it will be a selection of "Featured Xangans". How many of these guys and gals can you remember? How many are still blogging? How many have gone the way of the Xangadinosaur?The images are for the most part the profile pic I most remember, and all these Xangans have been featured on the front page of Xanga, some more than others. Some I have read. Some I've never visited. But they are all "Featured Xangans."The music is by theacematt2.
I just threw this together before going to bed. It's just a taste of what I'm going to "feature" in the video. The opening Xanga logo is one of the first Xanga logos ever shown on the site. I was surprised to find that I couldn't find some of the Xangans I remember on the Featured pages on which I looked. I was equally surprised to find that some of the Xangans I have read for quite a while, or remember reading were featured quite often.
There are two or three Xangans who have been featured more often than anyone else. Some of them are among the sites "featured" in this little teaser video. I was collecting profile pics, and I realize I've repeated some of the Xangans. Also, if there was a "lock" on the site, or right click wasn't avialable, I wasn't able to collect the image. (I could have gotten it from the page's source code but I spent too much time on this as it is.
I did think that Xanga at large might find this little trip down memory lane (in no particular order) interesting. And remember, this isn't the whole video! It's just a little teaser. After I get a few comments, I'll mention where I got the images. I've linked to this particular website in the past. "The past" is a hint, by the way. I want to see if anyone will be able to tell me where I got these. As I said, I haven't been collecting Xanga profile images on my home computer. I got these all off the web tonight.
EDIT 3/30 6:47am. pdt. I'm surprised nobody asked yet about where I got the images. I always like to take trips to the past on the internet by way of the Wayback Machine on the Internet Archives site. It's where I collected all the material for my "History of Xanga: Expect Visitors" post in 2009. The archive is conducting a beta test of a new Wayback machine which is almost like "surfing the web" when the web was new. I just put www.xanga.com (or any other website, including my own, LOL) into the search bar, and a calendar appears going 'wayback' to the date the first 'snapshot' of that website appears on the archive. It's like the "museum of the internet" and it's a great way to see how the internet and particular websites have grown and changed.

@Roadlesstaken - Dear Alex, At around 8 p.m. I stopped collecting profiles. As I state, this collection is only from 2004-2008. I joined in 2004, and I can remember in the days B.TC. (before Theologianscafe) the top spots were usually Wutain and Cakalusa. (I know I have the first username spelled wrong, but I'm at work and don't have my "notes" in front of me.) I haven't done any research before 2004 and I still have to collect the "present" set of Xangalebrities. Some from 2008 didn't have profile pics I could grab, like Sam(wherethefishlives) or Walter (eadie). I hope to have better luck on the next search.
@mommachatter - Dear Karen, Two usernames which I couldnt' find, but pretty much thought they'd been featured, were my old friend Terry (Lordpineapple) (rest his soul) and Ira (thenarrator). Both were instrumental in helping me maneuver through the "community" when I was new here. Lordpineapple was a read "Xangalebrity" who blogged under three or four personas (and wrote poetry from eight or ten personas.) His best "creation" was "the three headed sarahs" an alien being who visited each site and wrote biting satire in comments. Thenarrator is probably published by now. He wrote short stories, and at the botttom of his entries, would insert blurbs about what other Xangans were writing about and posting.
@hesacontradiction - Dear Ann, I'm not up to the present in collecting profiles, so there are a lot of Featured Xangans I don't have yet. And some for whom profile pics weren't supplied on the "snapshots" of their web pages. In fact, I just did this pretty hastily before going to bed last night. The actual video I'm making will take some time. It's called "Xangaroll" and is a parody of the "Rickroll" type video called Trololo ,a nonsense song in "vocalize" featuring Eduard Khil which started appearing around the internet last year at this time.
@an_OM_aly - Dear Linda, Ah, yes, the "In Crowd". I've always aspired to be part of the Xanga "in crowd" and was pretty surprised actually to see my profile pic on featured lists from 2006! I usually find I get up there when I do humorous entries, esp. about Xanga. When "Xangalebrity" started to be a word constantly thrown around on the front pages to denote one's top blogging success in mid 2008 or so, there were a lot of young people who "dominated" the spots. But going back over the "history of Xanga" as I do frequently (nobody has guessed or asked me about the website which enabled me to capture these old profiles yet) I find that there are lots of bloggers of different ages and who presented lots of different styles of content over the years who repeatedly got featured. Xanga is an equal opportunity blogging site!
