Friday Night Party With the Mikester!
It's Friday night. I've always been a pretty social animal, and Fridays signal the beginning of the weekend, when the Mikester doesn't need to go to work. Even when Friday night meant nothing, back when I was in retail, some night served as my "Friday night", and I was always ready for a party.Recently, I had a good laugh from a couple of video entries by Jim (ItIsAllGravy) here on Xanga. The first was "Virtual Drinking Buddy" and the next was "Butter and Vodka". In the first, Gravy has a "virtual" conversation with Xangans who are drinking alone, and in butter and vodka, well, I won't spoil the fun. You can click the link (after you read this of course) and see for yourself. He's a "Xangalebrity" so I certainly don't need to coddle him with links to his site, but because I mention him, I'll "tag" him and he's almost certain to recommend this entry to his 756 friends, and maybe I'll get some new readers, now that I'm officially "back" from my long hiatus. (A lot of folks seem to have flown the coop over the past four months.)
I like to say I hardly drink alcohol anymore. I rarely drink on weekdays. I have to get up at 4:00 a.m. to drive to work and open up the building. I'm the first one in every morning. I used to drink a Corona (con lima) or two every night after I got home back in the early part of the aughts, but my late roommate Joel (Cancerboy) used to drink like a fish, as they say, and he used to drink my beers when he finished his. I could never keep a 12 pack in the fridge for a week as intended. He'd eventually "pay me back" but I drank Corona in bottles, and the replacement was usually Miller in cans. Not the same thing to my advanced beer drinking palate.I switched to Smirnoff Ice cause he didn't like the taste, but I couldn't stomach drinking more than a couple in one night. When I moved into my home here in the mobile home park after Joel died, I stopped drinking altogether. I used to drink to get drunk, period. To slide from the inanity of the workplace into a numb feeling of goodness. I liked the "high". Drinking one of anything wasn't doing this for me, and I like raspberry iced tea, so I stopped the booze, and started being a "teetotaller".
Since I get home early, I usually retire early too. I was tending to go to sleep early on Friday nights too. My neighbor, who is 42 and works an evening shift as a cook, gets off at 11:30 p.m. He is ready to "party" on Friday nights. I wanted to stay up to be able to keep him company, or go out, but I couldn't do this when I retired early.
So I "invented" "Mike's Energy Bomber", a 1/2 cup rum, 14 ice cubes, a 16oz. can of Monster M-80 energy drink blended in a blender, which makes two tall great tasting drinks which give me a slight buzz and keep me up for hours.
Now, I've never lied about my party hardy behavior back when I was a younger man. I was the guy who "sampled" all the drugs du jour, and if "Mikey liked it" it was okay for my group to dig in. I think I knew almost every drug dealer in the South Bay back in the late 70s. When I saw the movie, "Blow", I told people that I think our dealer, who supplied everyone in the beach cities I knew, got his drugs from George, who was played by Johnny Depp in the movie.Above is the photo I snapped in late 2009 to compose the profile pic which adorned my blog and this particular post for a while. Some folks thought I was hoisting a mug of orange juice, but it's a hearty mug of Mike's Energy Bomber.
I like to think I have a modicum of common sense. I used to drink up to 7 beers domestically (at home) then go to the bar with my buddies, and drink more,usually with a Jack Daniels chaser. (Called a "boilermaker, if memory serves.) One time I thought perhaps I was drinking a bit too much. This was in 1982. I'd just got beaten up in a bar by some bikers, who broke my glasses and stole my money. I didn't remember a thing. This is because I had a propensity to "black out", or forget hours of time, where I was physically "doing stuff" (like shooting off my mouth, or trying to get in some chick's pants) but I always joked that there was no harm done, cause I couldn't remember what I'd done.
I stopped drinking cold turkey for five years. Then I was fired from being a hardlines merchandise manager at Target in 1987 and I started drinking again when on unemployment. After I got my present job, which I've had for 26 years (and from which I always have weekends off) I stopped drinking again for a few years. Each year on the anniversary of my quitting, I would chug a beer for old time's sake.
Above is a photo of the Mikester at his home bar, located in the living room of my first apartment, back in 1974 after my father died and my sister and I moved out of the family home in preparation to sell it so my mother could get Medicare benefits in the nursing home. Sister got married, and my brother stayed in the family house till we were forced to sell it. I bought the physical bar from a friend in East L.A. and for a while there were lots of parties at my place. On Monday through Friday. I bought a book about mixology, and I had beers in the fridge, plus vodka, gin, and rum stocked behind the counter. I could mix up pretty much anything. There was a "kitty" on the edge of the bar where my friends could leave me "tips". They never did. And eventually I stopped giving them free drinks. It was starting to get expensive.A lot of my buddies still lived at home, so I was the only guy with his own apartment. It was a good time, and helped me to forget that my mom was a vegetable in the hospital and my dad had just died.
Here is a photo of me, joint (marijuana) and Schlitz Stout Malt liquor in hand, a few months after I'd been fired from my first position as a retail manager at Ole's Home Center in 1977. I grew my beard (which I just shaved off after 30 years or so.) You will note that in this and the above picture, I have a little hair on my head. It was thinning rapidly even at the age of 25 and started falling out very quickly never to return over the next two years.)Even on unemployment, I budgeted in a few bucks for liquor and illegal substances. The bar had followed me around through three apartments by this time, BTW. I finally got rid of it in 1982 when I quit drinking, and turned the "barroom" in my two bedroom apartment at the time into an actual bedroom for a roommate.
It's almost 8p.m. as I write this. I'm finishing off the 2nd glass from the first pitcher of Mike's Energy Bombers for the evening. My porch light is on, a signal to Mike that I'm up, should his shift tonight be earlier. Sometimes he gets off at nine.
I have one more pitcher to prepare. I don't drink more than two. For the benefit of my health conscious readers, I did an internet search when I first concocted the drink. College kids like to mix vodka and Red Bull, but they drink lots of it. (Energy drinks are sort of like legal liquid speed. When I was younger, we just took speed.) I got lots of scary warnings from my internet search. So when I took my physical in January of 2010, I asked my doctor if I were okay drinking this concoction on Friday nights, so I could stay up late and "party" with my buddies at the mobile home park.
"Sure it's okay, as long as you don't drink more than two, and don't overdo it. Party on, Mike."
So now I'm going to get back to the party. It does make me feel like I'm "up" and I do get a slight buzz. When I first offered some to Mike and a couple of friends he brought over last year, he told me it's too weak and I should put more rum in it.
I just gave him the bottle. At my age, Mike's Energy Bombers are the best thing I can imbibe on a Friday Night Party with the Mikester.
And they're "doctor approved".

EDIT: 01/22 9:15 a.m. Well, my neighbor came over at about ninish, but all he wanted to do was watch the last quarter of the Lakers game. I'm not a sports fan so I was pretty bored. After the game, I told him I was going to bed and then watched the rest of last week's episode of V and did go to bed by 10pm. I had a better party here on my blog! Thanks to everyone who dropped by! @hesacontradiction - Ann, now just knowing "me" from the internet (for at least a couple of years now), and now seeing three "stages of me" in those photos, would you say you believe I've pretty much been "me" all my life? (I'm still posin' fer pitchers.) To "me", I seem to be the same exact person, who is inhabiting this other body, which sometimes turns against me.

My husband drinks that redbull and jagermiester - jagerbombs. I don't like them. If I'm going to have an energy drink to stay up I'm not going to drink alcohol. But if I'm going to drink alcohol I don't drink an energy drink. We have an unofficial bar. (bottle collected on a counter) We don't drink every week but if someone comes over and wants something we can usually mix it. Friday nights are our nights to hang out with friends too. We're geeks though. We game.
Fun times. My Fridays have gotten pretty tame after leaving college. I was always more the social drinker anyway. Sounds like you are enjoying it- I may have to try the Mike's Energy Bomber- never used the ice.
People's different reactions to booze are interesting. I'm a very moderate social drinker, while my younger brother and my brother-in-law both died with alcohol as a serious contributing factor - booze never has affected me very much.
These present-day mixes of strong caffeine and alcohol strike me as being sort of strange - mixing a stimulant with a depressant sounds like a waste of good liquor to me - but de gustibus....Some years ago my wife and I switched from whisky to wine (we kept on drinking beer) and have never looked back - I still have an unopened bottle of Dewar's scotch left over from our honeymoon (1963) the last of a case we brought back from the Virgin Islands. We have found wine to be more fun and learning about its complexities very interesting. CA has some very good wines - good enough so that some of the classier French winemakers have vineyards there and produce very nice wines. Have you ever gotten into that scene?
I generally like to have a beer or two on the weekends while watching whatever sport is in season (football, hockey or Nascar are the ones I follow) and I like a glass of wine or 3 on Thursday nights. (Thursday nights are my "party night". A friend of mine does an internet radio show that night so I stay up a little later than usual and chat in the radio show chat room with online friends.)
I've never tried one of those energy drinks. If I want to stay awake, I'll have a cup of coffee or two.
@FalconBridge - Falcon, I didn't invent the term "bomb." Oh, the horror. Drinking alcohol without the boost would just put me to sleep, and the idea for me is to be able to stay up past my usual bedtime.
@Roadlesstaken - Alex, Yeah, I'm a transparent sort of person, and after reading all the negative posts online about mixing strong caffeine with alcohol, I did have to ask my doctor. (Sometimes I drink a bit more than he advised. Shhh. Don't tell anyone.)
@Ro_ad808 - Dear Michael. Ah, college. I attended the University of Southern Comfort (USC). Almost even pledged the TKE house, but I lived 60 miles away from campus. Lot's of partying went on in those days, let me tell ya. I'm on a strict budget. The ice stretches a cup of rum and a can of Monster into a full pitcher, and I like to blend it, like a blended margarita. (Although it may be interesting to note that I drink Cadillac margaritas, which are not blended.)
@tychecat - Dear Dick, Forgive me for not having commented on your blog lately. I visited a few days ago but didn't comment. I agree, the mix is a bit strange. But for me it's a good mix,as long as I do it in moderation. It has the ability to keep me awake, and I only usually "party" like this one night a week.
red bull and vodka...no... but the people.around me liked bull meisters. red bull and jager yucker meister....

I tried one of those mixed boozy energy drinks once. It was the most vile tasting toad spit I'd ever swished around my gums and fillings. Maybe your concoction has a better flavor. I sure hope so for your sake.
Bummer that your drinking buddies never left moola. You should have had them bring supplies at least.
I can't say I've ever been much of a partier. I think maybe 2 times I've gotten drunk and both had black out spells. I rarely drink. I know I would be an alcoholic like my brother if I did. Some people can handle it some can't. I'm not one that can.

@baldmike2004 - Ha! So you almost pledged TKE - I ended up Pyrtanis (president) of my TKE chapter (U of FL) after a stent as chapter steward (way to power was through the frater's stomachs )
In those days I was on the GI Bill and a small scholarship so my drinking was pretty much restricted to whatever beer was cheapest by the case.One of my buddies brewed his own beer (horrible). Our teetotaler Univ. president told me once he was always willing to accept the punch at our house because he knew it wouldn't be spiked. I don't think he knew it was because we were too poor to afford booze - everybody had to spike his own.
I think I'm gonna have to create one of these in the near future as an homage to everyone's favorite baldmike. Pix will be taken.
