News And Notes: Extreme Makeover Progress
THE OLYMPICS: There was too much to watch, but what I did watch was stupendous. As with the 2004 Olympics, I just programmed the DVR (Digital Video Recorder) to record the "series" of Olympics programs on Channel 4. All of NBC's channels featured coverage, along with their websites, but I wasn't on vacation, so couldn't immerse myself into the whole shebang. Even limiting myself to the NBC coverage, that was a LOT of Olympics over two weeks. I saw it all in Hi Def, for the first time, and it was almost as if I were on the track, in the pool, and watching right from Beijing. Opening ceremony: As with all the ceremonies over the years, I'm sure I'll forget this one in four years, but it was a colorful mixture of dance, drums and high flying athletes. I thought I was watching a new Crique de Soleil show for a moment. China did invent gunpowder, and had a lot of fireworks on hand. I'm glad nothing burned down. Swimming: I was able to catch all of Michael Phelps' showcase events, even if I did see the last relay in reruns. I enjoyed the interview between Michael and Mark Spitz.
NBC is Americentric, of course, (to the point of being a bit jingoistic, esp. during gymnastics) and the coverage was US heavy, but I do applaud them for showing some events in which Americans weren't favored.
Gymnastics: I'm glad little Shawn Johnson did get a gold medal for the balance beam. Both Shawn and Nastia Luikin (Gold for All Around) were a joy to watch, and each had a distinct and different style. I actually hope that somebody makes enough of a stink that the real ages of the three Chinese girls are revealed, and the Chinese team loses their medals if in fact, their girls were underage. The Chinese did seem to be somewhat sneaky overall, but they put on a good show. They won the most gold medals (51) of any nation since the USSR won 55 in Seoul in 88. America won 36 golds, and led the overall medal count with 110. I'm glad NBC got rid of John Tesh, but I got so sick and tired of Bela Károlyi that I fast forwarded through his segments. (Even though he IS of Hungarian descent.)
This isn't a complete entry about the Olympics, so I'll close this now, but there was excitement and greatness all around. Too bad about LoLo Jones loss. I didn't think Usain Bolt showboated all that much. I even enjoyed watching the hula hoop and jumprope competition! (rhythmic gymnastics). True, I fast forwarded through a lot of the basketball , soccer, and volleyball games, but I did slow down enough to watch Kerri Walsh and Misty Mae Traynor in a lot of their matches. (Through a scheduling problem I didn't record their Gold Medal match!)
HEALTH: I finally got my referral, the second, for an appointment with a specialist to see about my potential hip replacement replacement. My appointment has been made (after almost a month) for September 12th. I hope all they need to do is go in an retap and drill the existing hardware, or perhaps weld the broken part in place.
I've gotten a second refill on the Tylenol Codiene. I'm only taking it once a night, before going to bed, but during times of extreme pain, like this past weekend, I will take a pill during the day.
WORK: I got a nice $184,000 order for 92 starter panels (which cost the customer $2000.00 each) on Friday. I quoted the job a couple of months ago, and was pretty sure I was getting the job. Since our engineer is off this week, he was all over the kit list with a fine tooth comb on Friday. At one point he was doubtful the starter was right for the job. The panels are going to Egypt and will be mounted in 121 degree heat. I ended the work day a bit frazzled from answering so many questions. (Sort of like the 3rd degree) But now I'm in the process of final design for customer approval. The panels are going overseas, and we got half the payment up front, which makes everyone happy.
MIKE'S EXTREME MAKEOVER: I don't know if too many readers noticed, but I put the second part of Mike's Extreme Makeover video blog online last week. The first part should still be on the main page of the blog and is ALSO HERE. The second part is below. In this "webisode", I show the process of carpet cleaning. The third part is nearly finished, in which I showcase the house as ready for my new roommate Mike to move in.
The footage in the video was shot three weekends ago. Two weekends ago I relaxed, and took a weekend off. This past weekend I didn't stop working. The kitchen remodel was to begin last week, but Frank, our owner's handyman, (who is always overworked being the only guy who repairs and remodels all the owner's properties) wasn't able to show up until Friday. In order to prepare for the relaying of tile in the kitchen, which is to commece today while I'm at work, I moved the stove, washer and dryer outside the house (by myself). I also completely sanitized Mike's bathroom, which had been Joel's.
Mike needed some space in the garage for storage, and I had just filled all the empty spaces with furniture before I cleaned the carpet. I successfully cleared enough space that I could actually park my car in the garage. The space will soon be filled with Mike's mixing board and some rather large speakers he brought over. I fillled four trash cans with trach and a friend of Mike's came over with a van, which we filled with all kinds of stuff which went to the Goodwill. Mike , his friend and I moved the refrigerator out of the kitchen and into the garage as well. He's bringing over a newer refreigerator when the kitchen is tiled.
Below is Part 2 of the video. Part 3 should be online this week.
Mike's Video Blog #9.2: Mike's Extreme Makeover Part Two. 10.00 min. 512kbps. Plans are made to move furniture, and then Mike vacuums and cleans the carpets. Co Starring Spike and Malcolm.I've decided to keep the cats as long as I can. Spike is still being bad every so often, but I think it's because of the changes the house is going through, and the new folks which keep showing up in her "place". Hopefully she'll calm down after all the work is done. In the video, I haven't decided to keep them, but in the third part you'll see I say that they can stick around. I don't know if I'll videotape the garage and kitchen until after all the work is done, and Mike moves completely in.An Aside: This would have been Joel's 54th birthday. Happy birthday buddy.

The Extreme Makeover seems to be going well. Everything is looking really good, Mike
I can't bring myself to give half a s**t about the Olympics this year. I admire athletes, but I believe my jealousy has won out. I'd rather watch a circus and I'm to all that keen on that. I believe I'm becoming a fuddy-duddy... I never really knew what one of those was for sure until now
I hope Mike will be a good roomy. I'm looking forward to hearing the adventures of Mike and Mike.
I wrote and proofread the word "not" but actually typed "to".. obviously... obvious
Wow you have been an incrediby busy boy!
I don't know about the cats... I would have a delima, I would love the cuddles and the companionship, but hate the mess, especially if they were peeing where they weren't supposed to...
I enjoyed watching your progress, I can't wait to see it all done.
Be safe and don't over do!
Your Xanga friend Ang!
i loved the olympics, watched it daily....i couldn't care less about the cheaters, it is just fun to watch the competition...you do keep busy...
Happy birthday, Joel. I agree with a lot of the Olympic coverage you mentioned, although I actually got into the volleyball somehow. At first I mocked the uniforms, but then I found myself absorbed, rooting for the underdog, and tightening my leg muscles when there was an obvious error. It was fun. Best of luck with your hip troubles. I had to giggle at the language you use there - make it sound like you're going to Home Depot rather than to a surgeon
Yay for the big work order! Keep up the good work at home and at work and with your health.
looks like you did a lot of work... i hate cleaning. i try not to clean as much as possible
i actually need to get out all the dusting and cleaning supplies and get to it again. i tend to let it build up and do it all at one time (usually on vacations because it's a big job by then). i also like rearranging the furniture every once in a while too. something about it makes it seem lighter in the house for a little while. you did a good job. i'm glad to hear you are going to try and keep the cats. hopefully all the "bad things" will disappear. usually animals tend to act up in times of stress and an owner disappearing might have that happen.
With South Africa doing the worst ever, by winning only one silver medal, this is one Olympic game we would prefer to forget.
sounds like everything is going good, hope your hip falls into place too
hula hoop and jump rope - huh - a lot seemed to not be what i think of as olympics; no one here even turned the tv on, but i caught some good pix and stories oline
i'm looking forward to some Mike^2 vidz too
good luck on the hip job. i didnt know those things needed tune-ups. will they grease and oil your chassy while they're in there? :p
Hi Mike!
Amazingly Olympics came and gone! It was great! And now we have to wait more 4 years… =)
I've always liked to read in bed and outdoors I liked to do outdoors activities – skating, playing ball, riding etc.
Thank you for your opinion about the rhino picture. I don't have a photoblog because all photos are presented in a context that "explain" it, although I also agree that a beautiful/good photo don't have "explanation" as it stands for itself.
Thank you too for Constanca! She is doing great and soon I shall post more pictures with my other grandsons!
I hope everything turn ok with your hip replacement replacement! Please keep us informed!
Nice going at your work!
I've been following your Extreme Makeover with much interest! The video is very good. That part while you are vacuum cleaning is great. What a hard work!
You are definitely a star! I wouldn't ever consider to show this subject in a video as I though no one would care… And here am I, across the Atlantic Ocean, following every details of your Extreme Makeover! =)
Congratulations!
I'm glad you kept the cats. Poor animals… You are a good man! =)
I don't understand very well how xanga works about featured. Is that necessary to vote and recommend?
Have a great week!
Isabel
Hi Mike,
Looks like you didn't know if you were coming or going through all that steam cleaning! Actually, it looked like you learned the secret of cloning - wouldn't that have been handy? : )
I bet the new tile will look fantastic!
You have worked really hard on your place, and installment three will be fun to watch.
I enjoyed the Olympics this year, too, particularly Michael Phelps' events, although I do enjoy the gymnastics. It was great to see how happy Shawn was to win a gold!
Enjoyed the video! I've never used a Rug Doctor, but we used to rent them at a grocery store I worked at.
 I loved the Olympics, but it did cut into Xanga time. Now, that it's over, I am still not getting much Xanga time. I was asked to relieve a crossing guard yesterday and today, both shifts. The rest of this week and on into September, I'm going to be hard pressed to post or visit. When I do post, it'll s'plain why I'm scarce.
I've got some sort of glitch between Windows and my Flash program, so now I'm not able to access some videos, including yours. Tried the fixes that Adobe troubleshooting recommended, but still no help.
I hope you will get the hip problem taken care of. Sounds as though the make-over is progressing well. Congrats on the work order, too.
Anyway, wanted to say thanks for your visit and comment on the lease wording. I still think it's funny, but not intentionally. I'm going to include it in next post, whenever that is.
~~Blessings 'n cheers :goodjob:
I can surely relate to working things out and the Extreme Remakeover. I have been slowly unpacking, rearranging and such, but can only do some during some days. It is slow, but still going. You will get it done. Good luck on the 12th. I see the neurologist on the 9th. Maybe they can figure out about the head pain.
I see your life is eventful...so's mine, to the point where I had to shorten this week's update
The extreme makeover video looks like an episode from a reality tv! And yes, the whole issue about the Chinese gymnasts' real ages is overwrought and overstretched. I just wish they get it over and done with.
I think the Chinese did great with both the opening and closing ceremonies. Both were on such an epic scale and absolutely breathtaking.
RYC---There IS some things original, but usually they're rearranging what is [or was]
their girls were underage...you fell for the CON:eek:
Gymnastics was ALWAYS a kids' sport, especially for girls. Nadia got her perfect 10's at the age of 14...Amerikkka had the rules changed because the U.S. can't compete on THAT level:nono:
Mike,
This is actually a ryc to one you left on Kween's page. I didn't know that Internet Island was finished. I just thought you were just too busy to keep up at this time because of the passing of your friend and roomate, cleaning the apartment, finding another roomate...etc...
It sounds like things are coming together in your household. Good luck and well wishes for the changes....Hope Spike settles down too.
As always, I enjoy reading your posts and watching the videos.
Lmoisan
i need to do some of that cleaning/makeover stuff, too...
ryc: thanks for stopping by

With havin so much content and articles do you ever run into any problems of plagorism or copyright violation? My site
has a lot of exclusive content I've either authored myself or
outsourced but it seems a lot of it is popping it up all over
the internet without my agreement. Do you know any ways to
help stop content from being ripped off? I'd really appreciate it.
