PhotoPost: Griffith Park 7-1-07
The phrase "a walk in the park" usually refers to a liesurely stroll, without any effort. When the "park" in question, however, is Griffith Park, which, at 4.210 acres is the second largest city park in California, and one of the largest city parks in North America, and the "walk" is a hike to the Griffith Park Observatory and Planetarium, located on the side of the Hollywood Hills, then the "walk" is anything but liesurely.
Here are a selection of photos taken on Saturday morning, June 30th, in and around Griffith Park. To see larger more detailed images in another browser window, just click on the photos.
My Friend the Coyote is posing among some of the dry tinder aside one of the closed walking trails near the entrance to the park. One of our recent L.A. fires swept through the southern part of Griffith Park last month, and raced through naked timber like this somewhat easily. The coyote followed me from this area into the parking lot, possibly looking for food.
This is a view of the upper parking lot for the Merry Go Round. Although the south part of the park, where most of the devastation caused by the fire occurred, is closed to visitors, the fire came pretty close to the edge of the main entrance, and threatened the Merry Go Round. You can plainly see the burn area along the hill, contrasting with the green trees in the parking lot. This was as close as I could come to any damaged trees.
The Merry Go Round wasn't opened yet when I snapped this photograph of the building in which it is housed at around 8am. The Merry Go Round is a vintage 1920s carousel, and I have photos of it on another Webshots Gallery Here. (EDIT 7/02 5:30pm pdt. I have just switched the photo of the merry go round to the URL for the full size image instead of the webpage for the photo, so by "hovering" your mouse over the word "Here" above (or there, for that matter, you shoud "see" the Merry go round in a pop up if you have Xanga's "snap" enabled on your browser. I'll be using more of this as a "feature" in the future, since I tend to use lots of links as it is. )

There were many Detour, Warning, and Road Closed signs in my way, as I drove around looking for things to photograph. I had seen some interesting shots in the Times newspaper just after the fire, and wanted to replicate some of those shots, but the news photographers were obviously given special dispensation, and the public is barred from going anywhere near the fire damaged areas.
The city of Los Feliz was evacuated when the flames threatened the residential compound south of the park. I entered the Highhurst Ave. Entrance, which is at the end of a residential street. After the welcome sign, however, the road was closed, and in order to get to the Planetarium and Observatory, I would have to either drive around to the Hollywood Hills entrance in the back, or hike up using the trail
I decided that the short quarter mile walk up the walking trail wouldn't tire me out too much. I was wrong. Here are a couple of gals I passed on the way up. They're lucky, they're going downhill.
Here is my first glimpse of the Observatory from the trail. I took a 'wrong turn" and when getting back on the trail, was told by another hiker that "almost everybody" makes the mistake of going up to the water tower, which is on a paved road, instead of crossing the street to the hiking trail, which continues on the other side.
Here is a view of the Los .Angeles cityscape from the trail, partway up the side of the hill. It was a bit smoggy and hazy, but you can see the outlines of the skyscrapers in the background. This is at about 8:45am in the morning.
Wide angle view of the skyline of Los Angeles. Although the hiking trails are quite wide, and there are lots of people using them, they are steep and right near the precipice, so one has to be careful, or else he could slide down the hill.

I just had to take a few photos of the ubiquitous Hollywood Sign, first erected in the teens for a housing complex called Hollywoodland. The "land" fell down long ago, and during the ensuing decades, the sign has been renovated many times. This area was not threatened by the fire, but if it had spread, the whole of the hill, including the Hollywood Sign, could have gone up in smoke.
A view of the Observatory from the hiking trail. We're almost there. By this time, I was wheezing and a bit lightheaded, becoming somewhat dizzy. We are experiencing the driest year on record, since they started taking records in 1888. Only 3.41 inches of rain have fallen in Southern California in the last year. When hiking, take plenty of water with you. I had to "borrow" some water from a fellow hiker on his way down.
Once inside the Observatory, I must have swallowed three gallons of water form the nearest fountain. Here is a photo of the inside of th main rotunda, with murals, and paintings on the ceiling.

Here are the front steps of the Planetarium, made famous in the 1955 film "Rebel Without a Cause". Edit: 7/12/07, I stand corrected. I mentioned that the character played by James Dean died on the steps of the planetarium in a hail of bullets. Ira (thenarrator) pointed out that instead it was Sal Mineo's character who was killed, and by only one bullet. And my roommate says I embellish my "stories". I guess I can't always trust my memory after all???? I OWN a copy of this movie!
. I was so tired after my "walk in the park" that I didn't want to take any more photos, just get back in my convertible and head home.
I also shot some video of the area while hiking and while driving around the park, and it will show up in my latest Videoblog #7, which also will feature footage shot early July 1st around the Palos Verdes Peninusula including the full moon.

I haven't been around here for a while. Don't know why I forgot this place, I seem to remember having good discussions here. 4 weeks from Friday, I will be leaving for L.A to see a friend. He's lived there for a few months now and has some 'interesting' things to say about it. He did, however, go to Griffith Observatory for a conference and met George Takei (Mr. Sulu from Star Trek) and Ray Bradbury (who needs no introduction.) All in all, he said that it was an amazing experience.
