MIKEVIDEO UPDATES: 18 YEAR OLD VIDEO ARRIVES ON THE INTERNET

I've been holed up inside my media room for the past three days, and emerge this morning (I even took a day off of work on Monday!) with a certain feeling of accomplishment. Even though it's March already, and as usual, I haven't been able to update a lot of my massive AllThingsMike website, I have at least been adding some of my older "archival" videos to the MikeVideo section. In the entry below, I display some "performance" footage from 1991, uploaded from a VHS source tape. At the same time I was "making" the short "Dancin' Fool" vid for the blog, I was immersed in a more ambitious project, "re-creating" the 1989 MikeVideo movie "Moviola Dance" for the internet. I downloaded a sample copy of a new video editor last month, Sony Vegas . I might or might not upgrade my Studio software from Pinnacle. The Sony product, although relatively new, has a lot of fine features, including somewhat editable transitions and effects. I can do the same chroma key and animation effects as in the Studio, but the Sony product is much more stable, and so far hasn't crashed my computer. Over the course of the weekend, I not only captured and edited three segments of "Moviola Dance" but I created a "Feature Page" on the MikeVideo site for their display. The embedded files on are Google Video, instead of YouTube, because "Moviola Dance" contains footage from old MGM musicals manipulated to different music tracks. The last time I has something like that on YouTube, "42nd Street Dance" , which combines footage of Ruby Keeler dancing not to the original soundtrack but to a Paul McCartney tune, the powers that be at YouTube removed the video because of copyright infrnigement. I know that the footage is copyrighted, but I'm not "selling" the videos, and I always credit the original copyright holders, as I do with the music and the dance sequences in "Moviola Dance".md4

It is always my hope that someday one of my little "internet movies:" will be "discovered". A lot of time goes into creating them, and even when I'm using older material, as in this case, I am removing some of the inherent flaws in the VHS medium and adding new credits and changing sequences in order to make the videos seem fresh. I begin so much on the internet that I possibly will never be able to finish, that when I do accomplish something in a short period of time, like the "Moviola Dance" project, it makes me feel grand.

The Sony Vegas software tryout times out in two days, and at that time I will purchase the product, which costs about $125.00. I didn't really play around with it until just this past week, but I like what I can do with it, and have already begun three new projects including (1) a new Video Blog (my sixth) showing the various places I've lived for the past 20 or so years, (2) a "Cultural Blender" video, incorporating lots of animation, to showcase the "icons" in the Cultural Blender website, another section of AllThingsMike, which needs a complete overhaul, and (3) another episode of  "MikeVideo Histroy". I added the first episode to the MikeVideo History page and created more links to the videos I mention in the history which are online. It never ceases to amaze me that I put up the very first MikeVideo page on my website back in 1999 before the technology was ready for me to display the videos.

To quote myself from 2004, discussing the "future" of MikeVideo: "The Future of MikeVideo will essentially create "my television station" on the web. I have a dictum that anyone can create a digital video with high production values if they purchase a good video editing program and have some artistic tendencies. When I made "The Uncle Mike Story" in 1989, before the advent of digital video and streaming media, I had an idea that given enough photographs and video footage taken during a person's life, I could create a "video signature" of them for posterity. Never one to sacrifice art for commerce, I never followed up on this instinct. Nowadays, people with all those photos can make websites, internet movies, of DVD archives complete with music and narration. The neat thing about this advance in digital video composition is that most people are "digitally savvy" enough to learn how to operate and to master the program. I went through too many of these programs back in the day when it wasn't so easy. The future of personal video, like the future of personal websites, is limited only by the imagination and wherewithal of the webmaster and videographer creating the media. The fact is that there shouldn't be any limits, and for a lot of creative types, there aren't any"

    THE INTERNET COMMUNITY

I have "whined" in many posts that my intention for this blog has always been as a "destination site". I envisioned that many readers would automatically come over to see what I have up my creative sleeve on a regular basis. This has never happened, and though I believe that the few criticisms I seem to get (1. I write too much. for people to read. 2. The page loads slow. ) are really moot points. The site is called "WhenWordsCollide" and I do try to insure that the words do make sense, and that I have something to say. The page loads slow because Xanga puts a lot of "stuff' in the code. I've been on Xanga blogs that load much slower than mine, and that doesn't stop them from getting comments. I only post about three times a week. (I'm writing this one in the wee hours of the morning before starting work.) I possibly shouldn't obsess so much about getting any recognition. But it upsets me to see totally inane blogs and video sites on YouTube that not only are immensely popular, but always get lots of comments. In three years of blogging on Xanga, I can attest that no matter how many subscribe to me, the only time I can insure that people visit is when I visit them. Besides the "regular readers", there are always new people dropping by, but not the amount of people I wish for. I know I can stop commenting and visiting, and I'll still get an average of 10-15 comments. However, I really wish I could bring awareness to WhenWordsCollide so that each post I make immediately gets lots of hits. I think the quality is already here. Some of the people who take the time to read the "long posts" (which don't disappear) always seem pleased (with very few exceptions) so I must be doing something "right".

I purposefully want my blog to speak to and about "humanity." I don't "narrowcast". Perhaps that's the problem. There's "too much going on" as some have pointed out. I can't help it that I have many interests and I'm still excited by them, and want to share my work. I contemplated moving this blog back to Blogger, or removing the commenting feature. I hate it when I get a comment that doesn't even mention the post. Or a comment which says "I don't have time to read right now, but I'll be back" (usually written by someone who doesn't intend to return.) My girlfriend thinks I obsess too much about interaction and the "community" aspect of blogging. She's now "addicted" to a website named "MiceChat" which caters to people obsessed with Disneyland. I think if I were to blog about "American Idol" or some other established cultural pheomenon, instead of trying to create my own, then perhaps I might get more hits.

I find it interesting that my Webshots Gallery is now in the "top ten" for California photos. My camera isn't even that good, I finally put a new folder online after four months, but a few of my folders have been rising in rank on the "feature" page on Webshots for California photos. This feeds on itself, gathering more viewers, and attracting more visitors to the site. I want this to happen on YouTube and Xanga too, but it hasn't. I created the Internet Island community to help this along, but then moved the posts off this site and onto another blog. So now I don't even get traffic because of the blogring.

Well, enough whining. Most every blog I read would use this space to say: "I haven't been able to visit your sites, and I hope to get around.... blah blah blah." I don't like to do that. I'll apologize to any "friends" I haven't "visited" when I visit or message you. I think I've only written a haf dozen "short comments" in the past three days. But, heck, I'm busy creating, and for me, that's the fun of the internet.

The conundrum is that when I visit more often, I tend to get lots more comments, and people don't tend to do what I do and go back several entries to see what they might have missed. People on Xanga usually only comment on the "current" entry, and during these times I get lots of RYCs. It's always the work which matters most to me. When I spend lots of time on an entry, I am sometimes too burned out to go "promote" it by making the viists then. Oh well, enough obsessing. I have to get back to work.

  • Hi Mike,

You have a great site, always interesting.  Have to agree with you, don't even understand why some sites are so popular, but then I've never watched American Idol.   Please keep on doing what you are doing, I'll take your quality over "hits" quantity anytime.  Your talent is appreciated!

    ~ Peace ~

  • Hi Mike,
Maybe you should consider starting a webzine, a real community of writers and photogs (and ad sellers). You'd be a great editor.  Just a thought.

  • i don't have an answer for you about this. i know that when you spend so much creative energy that it's nice to have it acknowledged, but that it doesn't always happen. i know on my own site that any entry over 800 words gets fewer comments and those that do read the longer works are ppl who tend to love what ever i write. i try not to think about it... and just move those longer unread pieces up to the top once in a while when i am working on something else. i think it's part of the culture here tho... we're used to easy reads and don't like to work too much. i do know that i find it hard to "fit in" your videos. i know they're usually only ten minutes long, but for some reason that seems long to me. i enjoy them when i do watch them. i think if they make you happy, you should keep making them and they'll find their own audience some day. i love the talk on this about the actual software. playing with video is something i want to make the time to do soon. life is moving too fast! :( keep working at the things you love tho... that's the only way to live! :heartbeat:

  • In my short life as a blogger, I have already noticed some folks stand out with their ability to attract an audience.  I'm sure you could increase your hit rate by copying some of their approaches.  It depends on whether you think the blog is central to your life; I certainly don't - it is an entertaining side show that does open up a new community of friends.  But I'd rather be me and attract people who accept me just as I am rather than to create a new personna just to attract more people.  I can see how others would approach the question differently though - e.g. folks who are doing business on the Internet and/or people having a deep philosophical devotion, seeing it and blogging as much more than tools.

  • Keep on doing what you do, Mike. For a while there, I was having trouble with your site. But now that I've got a new PC, I've seen almost all of your videos. I've even looked at your source code to find the URL for the music you stream so I can download it to my hdrive. I visit every time you update (now, that is... I didn't before because my connection was so slow and my PC was so old) and I have explored almost all of your sites. I am a fan. However, me being me, I try not to be obsessive about it. When you are "trying for featured" I even come back and give you props from my other site. We can't all be DMV (Drakonskyre?) or the theologian, but that is probably a good thing. I don't really even like their sites that well, but I comment there occasionally (forgive me for I have sinned) to try and attract a few of their readers to my pages. I am a one trick pony whereas you are multi-faceted. We can only do/be ( did someone say doobie? ) what we know. As Bob Marley and Bobby McFerrin said, "Don't worry, be happy".

  • conundrum ... I love this word; seldom use it, but really enjoy it.  I have a thing for words!

You might get more hits with AI or something similar but you should do this for you (and you do) and hits will be hits.

Although that being said, this is a social community for me... so I do need and desire the interaction

AND... I came to you today... you did not visit me :p

  • Hey, I had to drag myself out of the shop to picture a picture of a Loquat tree today. I don't spent hours at my computer but it is starting to add up between craigslist and 1src and xanga. Supposedly I should get a life but searching the news and being on a more interactive forum is more to my tastes at times.

One surefire way to attract comments and attention is dressing up animals, it is like porn in a way to be popular, but I know you have a bit of integrity not to sell out (completely).

Yeah eventually I will slow down and just visit my own ring of people, thats how slowing down tends to follow that path. However I still am amazed that Theol. cafe still runs very popular, that guy should be paid by xanga...

  • :sunny: I like your variety and enthusiasm. I don't get here every day because I'm trying to spend a bit more time in real life and I have many blogs I like to visit. I do try to read back to catch up , but I can't comment on every post. (I haven't figured out how you comment as much as you do.) I kinda have to agree with the girlfriend. I don't understand the need/desire to be "featured." I write about what I want to. If someone is interested, great, if not, fine. I haven't particularly enjoyed any of the featured blogs I read, either, though I won't say I would not like all of them... I don't have time to check them all out. For me, it's all about "meeting" people who interest me, for whatever reason. I find more blogs I like to read from reading comments than from looking at Xanga's front page. Do what you do, but do it for your own enjoyment of it. That there are others of us who enjoy it also is just a byproduct.

  • All I can tell you is that you can't really affect popularity.  People aren't going to value the same things you do, so it's sad to obsess over it.  I love recognition, but I'm not going to go out of my way to change my writing style or content in order to cater to the masses.  I wouldn't want those masses, anyway.  Your way of blogging and commenting is delightful, but it's certainly not the norm.  I wish you peace!

  • You're just too smart, creative, etc for the general public who was raised on Brittney!  The few xangans are good xangans!!!  There is some intelligence out there!!!

  • I've always wondered why my page doesn't receive more comments since I only write well thought-out, well put-together material on my site (AFFIX SARCASM HERE). It is frustrating, though, when you do put a lot of time and effort into a particular entry and then only a handfull of people drop in to say something. I have brought more "awareness" of my blog through Featured_Grownups, but mostly only when I post a related topic, and not generally throughout the week otherwise. And yet there are people out there, like TheTheologiansCafe who regularly hit in the hundreds of comments per post, multiple times a day (I asked him once how many people visit his site a day and he said well over 10,000).

I'm going to sub to your site because you are interesting and you have piqued my interest. But beware - your page loads slowely, so I may not always be able to comment from my home computer. This is obviously your fault for posting so much verbage. It wouldn't have anything to do with the fact that I (still) have dial-up, and an ancient beast of a computer..... (AFFIX SARCASM HERE AGAIN)

    :sunny:

  • Sorry to see you're bumming over this blogging issue. It is obvious that you put your whole heart and soul into your art, and every artist dreams of recognition. Sadly, it often comes long after it matters. If you were able to get the readership you desire, by the way, I feel you certainly should receive dividends from Xanga. The type of readership you're talking about ends up profiting Xanga (for example, active blog rings that keep Xanga alive; shouldn't leaders be recognized? for the work they do?). Now, I'm not familiar with their budget or capital, but a tiny percentage kicked back for effort seems beneficial to all. It would entice Xangans to stay Here, for one thing.

Anyway, I'm going to criticize, and this one is not on your list. Yes, I agree, your blogs are too long for me, given that you have not written about something I'm passionate about yet, or that I know of yet. No, I do not have a problem with your page loads; I have a fairly new computer of high speed and good internet access. My criticism lays in how you receive your "fans" as of late. Fanship, imo, is a gift that cannot be demanded. Imagine the reception of an arrogant star who publicly whined to or demanded appreciation from his/her fans. It simply cannot be that way. We must put in the time and appreciate what we get from our readers. It must be seen as a gift, not an obligation. Otherwise, you will always be bitter that people do not give back (by reading and appreciating enough). I've seen it elsewhere intimately, btw.

I wonder if marketing is an issue. Have you considered how you market this and your other sites and if it is reaching your target audience(s)? For me, I recognize the value and treasure here. It just hasn't hit me as MY treasure--yet. That isn't to say, I won't make more effort to see what you've got going. But due to the length, I'll always scan for the treasure before fully committing myself to an absorbed, enthralled experience. It is simply a matter of taste and preference, like coffee over tea.
