I keep mentioning that I haven't taken many photographs lately, so I thought I'd throw creativity to the wind (what little wind we've had during this heatwave anyway) and just go take some pictures, in my own back yard, as it were. I won't thrill you with a neatly tended garden, however. We rarely go outside, perhaps every few months or so to mow the lawn. I'll call this PhotoPost "Neglected". My theme is "areas which nobody looks at".
First, a peek inside my penny jar. This isn't really "neglected". It's been around since I broke the original penny jar, which was a glass five gallon water cooler jar, in 1987 and replaced it with the plastic one I now use. It sits near the door of my bedroom, and I throw my pennies in it. This is a shot from the opening of the jar looking in at the top layer of about 8 inches of pennies saved over a 20 year period. It's pretty heavy.
And I thought I'd just cleaned this up! This is the thatch of weeds running along the side of the house. I took a weedeater to this area about two months ago. (Or was that THREE months ago.) Joel tells me he's mowing the back yard, but he seems to have forgotten this area.
The ex manager used to store the paint cans for the four units in the back of my house. He's been replaced by two management services since he dropped this nice specimen off in the back yard. I threw away some of the cans that split and spilled their paint in the soil over by Joel's bedroom.
A nifty little view through the hole in the wooden gate attached to the weed ridden throughway along the side of the house. The branches are from previously overgrown bottlebrush trees which the neighborkids used to hide in. I asked the latest owner to cut most of the growth.
I promised in return to clean up this growth, and I did, just a few years, er, months ago. This is the view the ants have of our gas meter.
Joel and I have lived in our house about 15 years now. Originally, as I've written many times, this was to be a "temporary" place for each of us, between places. But we've stayed here, and stayed here, and stayed here. I installed my DirecTV back in 1996. Since this is a rental house, I passed the cable through the window and into the house, instead of punching any holes in the wall. I shot this from below the coils of RF cable before they pass into the kitchen window, which was also a kitty window for a while.
Here is a truly neglectful scene. I started buying refrigerator magnets when we moved in, and I got quite a collection, but I will shamefully admit that neither one of us has cleaned Joel's refrigerator. Now, I do clean my washer and dryer, but I don't like to go into "Joel's" kitchen. I didn't "flash clean" anything in this series. Since it's "neglected", all the blog visitors can plainly see the rusted refrigerator door and the dust bunnies on the magnets. (Note to myself, get these into one of MY rooms)
Lastly, this isn't neglected. It's a shot of my framed "Coat of Arms" my ex girlfriend Pat got for me back when we were going together. It's hanging on the door to my bedroom. And because I felt as if I weren't finished, here is a side view of those pennies. How much money do you think I have here? Is it in the hundreds?

Interesting photos. I figure you have about $30-$40 in there...
Um, that photo makes me want to clean my own fridge right now!
I like the inside of the penny jar:wink:
eight inches of pennies?... I would guess....$20. They weigh soooo much. You should take them to the coin star and cash them in before they make pennies obsolete... then... go get your self a niiiice pressie.
I love these pictures of neglected stuff... wow. now you have me thinking about neglect. hmmm. great... and then guilt
The paint can.. I just can not get over that one.
Dear Mike
Thanks for your very kind comments.
An ants view..... only you would come up with a shot like that. I love the pics. I too have dustbunnies around the house. It just doesn't seem like a priority anymore. I told my mom that I am giving them names and will begin feeding them. I'll just call them pets.
Hope you are having a wonderful week.
Hugs
Kat
I always like your photo posts. This one is particularly interesting, since it's just your every day life. Anyone can take tourist pictures...this is you. Thanks for showing us!
♥
Hiya Michael!
These are some very interesting shots. I dare say most of us could discover a bit of neglected areas in our own living areas, should we look. I must say, that paint can makes me want to start cleaning... so I'm not going to look at that anymore. :fun:
BE blessed!

Intoxicating copper, bau/wdy brass, the scintillating, burnt umber of the other metals. Copper is burnished and can furnish any of my home. I have a copper cookie jar for the Reese's peanut butter cups. Just smiling and grokking to your pennies, Mike
i love collecting pennies. i love the way they stack up and when you take them to the coin machine they become real money. i cash mine in for special events- like a surprise when we go on vacation, or tickets to a show that's too expensive. an advice column is a good idea, but i don't need any more distractions... plus you and i both know that ppl ask for advice but rarely follow it. you know what i found amazing... that you don't go outside in the yard much.
So you're GAY
...not sure that's ALLOWABLE on Xanga anymore
i KNOW most of Robert Maplethorpe's works are now verboten here
Hi Mike. Your photographs' light play is awesome. At the NECC ISTE conference here in San Diego, we had Dewitt Jones [National Geographic, etc.] as a keynoter. His "imaginaction" and poetic presentation got us all caught in the web of his visions through photography. There are many right answers, he said, when we open possibilities. In your photographs above, you've done exactly that. Plus, having that special eye for the "neglected"--that's special!
Nice pictures Mike. I love taking pictures and I am getting more of them all the time think I will have to put some up on some picture site. Judi
I always enjoy your photoblog's because you are very inventive in choosingyour themes. Well done again. You openend my mind to look at places I have never looked at.
Hey Mike.
My oldest daughter Christina has some pictures up on a flicker account... You will have to go by way of her bloggie because I don't know any of this techno linkie jazzy stuff. She took a zillion photos
 :spinning:
"Neglected" pretty much describes my Xanga site...I guess I just don't have that much to write about these days. (Actually, I have LOTS to write about, but it's just too personal to post.)
hey there! thanks for sharing all your photos with us! i always enjoy coming to visit you.
RYC: thank you so much for stopping by my blog and for your very insightful comment. you give the best comments around i must say...i feel very special when you take that time to give such a nicely detailed response.
An impressive eight 2014 models received the NHTSA's highest possible Overall Vehicle Score for Safety that's more than Ford or Toyota.
My brother recommended I may like this web site. He was once entirely
right. This put up actually made my day. You cann't consider just
how a lot time I had spent for this info! Thank you!
