  • ElectricPoetry Post

I am reprinting last year's Valentine's ElectricPoetry Post and including my latest piece, "Valentine's Mantra", which is inspired by my relationship with Liz. I received a comment from Liz last year when I posted this group of poems, which I thought was a neat sentiment. We started to see each other as "Xanga friends" shortly after she wrote the following comment. Our first "excursion" together was in March of 2005, and we started "dating" in September.

"Valentine's day ... is ... yucky!  I guess because it is assumed you do something or get something or give something ... for me such things are made trivial.  Forget Valentine's day.  Say I love you and charm the pants off your object of desire every day!"........The_Queen_Of_Swords

    "The Last Love Song"
    Poetry by Michael F. Nyiri
    © 1972 (18 years old)

    Embodied, sweet nectar o'erflowed
A subway rushing through a tunnel
Still-wet grass clinging to slick bodies
A jar of something in the bathroom

Butter slapped upon a piece of toast
An open mouthed kiss on the porch
    Magazines strewn on the coffee-table
A wisp of a nightgown being removed

Trains bellowing through the dark night
A single rose alive in a pot
    Creaking of a broken shutter
    Mewing of a hungry cat

    Two lithe bodies touching
One hand caressing a soft breast
The rhythmic beating of two hearts
For a brief instant in sync
And out of touch with reality

    "Untitled II 2-12-73"
    Poetry by Michael F. Nyiri
    © Feb. 12, 1973

I laughed I floored the pedal
As I thought of my baby
    As I thought of my
    Pretty laughing too.
    She was laughing pretty loudly
    She was laughing pretty badly
    So I left and laughed
    The highway turned so blue.

I was laughing on the road
It seemed so funny to me then
    It seemed Ironic, pretty funny
When she said all that she said
I simply told her that I loved her
Told her simply that I loved her
But she threw her head back
    Nearly laughed me dead.

I cried I turned the corner
As I thought of my honey
    As I thought of my
    Petty, rotten luck.
    I had laughed the situation
    At my heartached remonstration
    As I laughed, I died
    I never saw that truck.

    "After the Last Love Songs"
    Poetry by Michael F. Nyiri
    © January 4, 1974 9:45 p.m.

Yes, some can turn to everybody else,
    Pretending they're extremely extroverted,
masking all their hopes in return for a date,
    But as I gaze upon
    all the young girls
    With their inward smiles and
locked-up diaries, I find I'm looking for an open
    book-
Not a page on Saturday night,
But a novel to peruse with my existence.
    I will find her someday
But until that time I'll keep trying,
Wistfully writing my last love songs to her
And hoping someday she'll pick one up
    and read

    "Valentune"
    Poetry by Michael F. Nyiri
    © February 3, 1979 3:05 p.m.

Let me sing for you a valentune
In hopes to win your heart
    Erase all past disappointments
And make a brand new start

    Hear me, sweet young angel
    Love so pure and fair
    Let my song enrapture
    As it travels everywhere

    Simple gifts of kindness
    We oft forget, I fear
    And I forgot your kindness
With the path I chose to steer

How sad, in light of memory
That I tried to blight your presence
But even smiles which hurt me
    Express a warm transcendence

    I will sing my valentune
In hopes to win your heart
I wish to be made whole again
No more remain a lonely part

My voice will ring the heavens
My words will wake the world
And I shall not stop singing
    Till love's valentune's fulfilled

    "Chance Encounter"
    Poetry by Michael F. Nyiri
    © February 21, 1979 5:45 p.m.

    Will empty waking hours compense
    the evening's satisfaction?
    Can one measure feeling through
    a physical attraction?
Are we interrupting life for small
    But lyrical distractions?
And does the echo far surpass the moment?

Two chance encounters script the pages
    of a passion play
    The separation bars itself behind
    the doors by day
And must I wait for some bright future
    door to open way
Or may I touch you once again tonight?

Comics laugh the tears away but tears drop
    just the same
All the lonely people cry just who
    are we to blame
Poets wish to fall for love but
    do not know her name
And does one kiss ease pressure on the soul?

One chance encounter taught me what
I might have left to give
Two chance encounters prove I have
some more life left to live
And I'm filled with wonder - whence the
    third encounter arrives
And this time will it be
    again by chance?

    "Valentestimonial"
    Poetry by Michael F. Nyiri
    © February 4th, 2004 4:39 a.m. pst

Last love songs sang a valentune for the ages
Many missed opportunities, many tear stained pages
Words calculatingly caressed the tenor of my soul
But there was nothing solid there to pay love's wages
And my broken body never could be made so whole.

In the beginning, when younger I felt electric
Penning youthful wisdom with a naivete eclectic
Muses gathered in the dust at my feet with purpose
I could gear up for a life of wishing frenetic
Feverish gales of love would wash over us.

Us didn't exist at all, and the years silently passed
More words than can be counted, and no love song was the last
The moon fills and wanes, and I stay in life alone
A vessel filled with life and love, emotion's iconoclast
No love was lost, no hearts were broken, save my own.

The present arrives and the lines on my face increase
Did I stop looking, I wonder, did the search for love surcease?
No, a personal note, none fulfilled, but I yearn
For Cupid's arrow to sting, and to pay love her lease
And I want to feel the ecstasy of the sting and the burn.

But now as I exist in this extreme time and tide
Simple love rhymes seem sorrowful, subtly filled with pride.
Mankind seems to have stopped loving, this isn't his behavior
The last love songs for eternal bliss seem to have died
And Cupid's arrows seem now to be what mankind needs to savor.

Last love songs sing a valentune for all time
A wish that humanity would find a common ground to share
I might find the love I crave, I might find the time to rhyme
But a global love would be a wondrous gift to share.

    "Valentine's Mantra"
    Poetry by Michael F. Nyiri
    © February 9th, 2006 4:50 a.m. pst

Always alone and reflective, silent amongst bliss
I glimpse The Spectre of Lovers standing blowing a kiss
I arise to respond, but my care melts away
And simple serene sadness puts a stamp on my day

The time spent with false hopes races anew
No destitute feelings, as the days turn so blue
No soulmates or lovers appear at the fore
And I never believe that I'll live loving more

Then a year or two passes, finally happiness reigns
I can hold her and love her, my emotion bears gain
Many thanks for her kisses, unadulterated glee
She crawls in my life with unabashed sincerity

I know not if love is a life lived forever
If The Spectre of Lovers leaves emotion to sever
the ties of terrible times taken from living
Or if love begins slowly, impressed with our giving

My love once scattered cleanly and surely away
But twas coddled by circumstance, returning this day
And growing to fullness, with gladness sublime
Exhaling pure feelings, back and forth throughout time

In the past, alone, waiting, but never found love
Looking throughout lifetimes, below and above
But love found me wanting, and kissed softly my cheek
Now I thank her most sweetly, through passionate weeks

The past is a sieve through which memory fades
The pains and the sadness cut clean with time's blades
But the flowers which bud and bloom bright on the vine
Tell me repeatedly now you are my Valentine

  • I love LA too! I did some exploring of LA years ago! Not so much now! I used to go to the Fairfax and 3rd street  Farmers Market just for coffee and whatever.frequently..and to enjoy the atmosphere and people, Cantor's Deli, and Melrose before it was such a trend. My friend and I visited small art photo exhibits  set up in old converted houses. But that was then and this is now a different time places have changed. :goodjob:

I admire your commitment to writing! You are able to express more than I can ever hope to. Great topics. I have been reading but not always commenting on others. Thanks for the detailed comment on my site. You are really dedicated.  You give us inspiration!

  • What a wonderful gift to give someone, a poem!

It is so amazing really that I heard from you today. I'd quit updating for a little bit due to some burnout, you know, the usual, when I decided to update yesterday and then clean out my subscription list. I didn't get around to any sites with comments but I made a mental note that when I did, to come to your site because it has been so long since we "spoke".

It was eery then when I saw your comment (eery in the best possible way of course!) Almost as if my thoughts provoked it.

  • I read every poem here for once in a while.  I'm impressed by these poems, the earlier ones more than the late, even.  I love the images of the first - they evoke a lot of eroticism and speak to my heart.  I love the style and the way it sounds, perhaps, like someone whose voice is breaking with the emotion, of the second poem, Untitled II.  After the Last Love Song, with the prayer for the open book, reminds me of my ex-boyfriend's current realizations of what he's looking for in a woman to fall in love with.  I respect it and you write it beautifully.  The next few are similar to things I've written, except I like your wordplay better.  "A Passion Play" is a fairly popular phrase in religion, but I'm sure you also know it as Jethro Tull album.  I credit you for both allusions   Your mantra is good, the last one, more prosey and telling than showing, but there's a lot to chronicle, isn't there?  I love the sweet sincerity of your current love.  It makes me smile.

  • RYC:

    Ha! Well put.

  • The way you write... is amazing. It moves me. Thankyou, have a great weekend!

  • Stern is soon gonna have a film festival...will post details on the other site once i find out the specifics

  • I read you when I can, Mike.  I know you're busy.    Yes, I read because you're a good read and a good man and not because you comment.  When you do comment, though, I know it's going to be thorough and a true delight.  Today was no exception.  I'm a bit high on life today.  Lengthy e-mails from unexpected friends today inspired me to write nine screens of response (more than that, if you count the earlier e-mail this morning).  I also wrote something that may eventually become a blog but isn't ready yet - just a musing on the literature I love and the philosophy of the Modernist period and on and on.  At some point, I think I'll want to hone in one one of the characters I'm reading about in a book.  Also, I want to write more about moderation.  And Issac Newton and his mystical search for God and how he turned to alchemy for a while.  Something is alive inside me today.  This past week has been a tough one for several reasons.  I was talking to my brother about the depression that runs in our family and how we both feel rather bipolar a lot of the time.  I don't let it affect me so much as to miss work anymore, and it doesn't impact my life to the point where I want to go get diagnosed or treated or anything.  I've studied psychology.  I know that a lot of things help to a certain extent, but everything has a side effect and a lot of things work even when the practitioner doesn't know why.  And that's not cool for me at this point.  Excuse my tangent there

I know you keep your poetry online.  I've been there before, but I haven't made the time to really read everything.  I like that you supplement your site with your blog here.  Things that you highlight at a certain time sometimes hit me in a certain way, and it sparks me to go back and read more of what I want when I'm ready for it.  I'm sure that's part of how you decide what to blog and when and why you blog, too.  It's speculation, of course, but I see a kindred spirit in you and have for a long while.

I love reading about the Middle Ages' Passion Plays, and I love Jethro Tull for taking all of it and even letting the music from that time influence his own music.  I'm glad that was your first concert and that it cemented your love.  You put that well, "cemented my love," and I couldn't even think to change the words in my rebuttal.

Nazis may not have believed in religion, but the way some of them defended their beliefs to the common German people was to blame the Jews for all of their problems - historical, religious, social.  I had a great class in college on the Holocaust with a Professor Peter Haas.  He was a tough grader, and I got Bs on a lot of his papers, until the last one, which I guess I got an A on, because he gave me an A in the class.  Another tangent - I think I got the A because he was on the Hillel board and I was part of the Jewish choir and sang some Holocaust and Jerusalem songs at a board meeting that semester.  Tommy is a great album.  The end of "Tommy Can You Hear Me," the "Listening to you, I feel the heat," (I know that's wrong, but that whole section) is my favorite part of the album.  I also adore Tina as the Acid Queen.  Elton John's version of "Pinball Wizard" was the first version I ever heard (his version of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds preceded my knowledge of the Beatles as well... thank goodness I became obsessed with the Fab Four in eighth grade as well).

I'm amazed at the blogging explosion from a pragmatic standpoint.  Now we have Sprite ads carressing our screens if we don't subscribe (and maybe if we do), but I'm surprised at the growing amount of information being contained on the Internet - all the space, the bandwidth.  I've been thinking about how prolific I've been in various forms simply today and imagining multiplying that several million times, at the very very least.

I believe in writing what I know.  In the beginning, I imitated the romantics.  I've read more broadly now and play with different styles.  I wrote about my melodramatic teenage loves and desires, then social issues, then deeper love poems, and now I'm playing more with images and ideas, in turn, depending on what I'm reading or what strikes my fancy or what my Xanga aunts (jeri, prudy, brenda) dictate.  I still have a long way to go with Modernism, but I'm ready to start dabbling more in the 50s and 60s writing.  I loved Pirsig's Zen.

Hmm, my fervor and concentration were just broken.  My boss came in and we went over what to start changing on our journal's website.  I'm glad he did, because this project will be so exciting!  As much as I loved having the extra time to blog, I'm ready to begin working more fiercely.

Thanks for everything, Mike.  ~ Emily
