"The Pipes, the Pipes are Calling Me." Plumbing Update.
I wrote the following as part of an email I sent to Elizabeth this morning, and it has pertinent info concerning our busted water main. Here is a total accounting of the past couple of days. Forgive me for mixing present and past tense. This started out as a letter, and not a formal blog entry:
On Thursday morning I couldn't start the car, and when I went to the dining room to use the phone to call into work, the carpet was completely soaked. I got a new battery for the car, and the new owner of our complex and the plumber came by that afternoon. It seems the water main has broken, and the pipes are in the concrete slab on which the house is built. They're old galvanized pipes, and one broke. The plumber doesn't know exactly where, and they would have to tear up the flooring to find out. So yesterday, the plumber was to begin installing new pipes in a temporary arrangement so that we could have running water. They shut off the main to the house.
Now I admit I didn't even think that the pipes were broken. We've had trouble with sewage back up and under the house, the standing water has seeped up under the hall and my bedroom carpet. I had to move my bed one winter when it was raining because the corner of my room got soaked. No owner has ever fixed this problem. and my introduction to the new owner, coincidentally on the morning he signed the papers to buy the units, was to tell him my house was filling with water. I told the people at work it was like being on the Titanic. I actually could see the water seep across the kitchen.
The owner told me this would take only Friday, but the plumber didn't show up until I got home from work at 3. Now, I knew by looking at the pipes and what they were talking about that this was a big job. I figured two or three guys would have to come by to get it done in a day. When the one plumber shows up in the afternoon, after having done a day's work already someplace else, I knew that it was getting worse.
The owner shows up an hour later. I asked both of them if I should be securing a motel room for the night, or if I'd have running water in the shower Sat. morning. (when I'm writng this.) The owner said no, there shouldn't be a problem.
The plumber stayed till 8pm, and he "jury rigged" a pipe so that we could have water. There are holes in the walls, and tools and pipe all over the kitchen. He was supposed to bring over a wet vac so we could clean up the dining room but he didnt' do that. He complained about my satellite dish mounting job, because I went through the window with the wire, and it was getting in his way. I thought he was accusing me of stealing the service (which is impossible to do, but he doesn't have satellite ) because he said that all the services came with free installation. I bought the system over a decade ago and they charged almost 100 bucks for installation so I did it myself. I didn't want to quarrel with the guy, but he was a bit abrasive. (I'm sure he was pretty tired, and possibly didn't know that the plumbing job was as big as it was, but, hey, that's his job as far as I'm concerned!
He finally goes out to the curb to turn on the water, after complaining about stuck valves and other stuff, and when he turns on the water, Joel and I hear a rushing sound, and I went into the kitchen to find water streaming in from the wall spigots where the hot water should be running into the washer. (He had disconnected the washer from the wall and obviously didn't turn off the spigot cause the water was off at the time. He was pretty tired, and I don't think he is the best plumber in the world either. You should never turn on the water with the spigot open.
Well, to make a long story short, I reached over to the spigot to turn it off. The washer was in the way, and water was literally raining in the kitchen. I got really upset, and couldn't find a second fount of water that was soaking me and I couldn't see through my wet glasses. Joel called for the guy to shut off the water. He came to the door. I was a bit upset screaming "I don't know how to turn it off" as the "rain" from the kitchen was shooting out into the hall. He shut the water off, and came to the door, where I was standing sopping wet.
"Well, I'll come back tomorrow. That didn't work" he said matter of factly. I was about ready to scream. Joel was more reserved. "It's a mess in here" he said when looking at the kitchen.
I'm about ready to go out to breakfast and try to forget that there is still no water. The plumber promised to return at 7:30 and it's now almost 8:30am and we have a worse mess than when he started to "fix" it.
Ho Ho Ho. Merry Christmas. When it "rains" it pours, right in my kitchen.
To add insult to injury, the new owner wants to repaint the house, clean the carpets (which obviously will have to be done, perhaps replace them in the dining room) and landscape the outside of the house. I don't even give a damn about landscaping. It's like the farthest thing from my mind when I have to "borrow" water from the neighbor's spigot just to brush my teeth.
Of course our rent is going to be raised.
I was telling the guys at work yesterday (when I THOUGHT some plumbing was being done in my house) that our lives and perceptions of "reality" can change in an instant. No matter how well we "prepare" for "disaster" it strikes at the most inopportune of times, and changes everything, sometimes for just a few days (hopefully, in my and my roommate's case) and sometimes forever.
I just won't think about this now. I'll think about it tomorrow. Tomorrow is another day.
Here is a photo I took of Joel last night just to change the subject. Usually, he gives me the finger or some other gesture of love and affection.

ugh. If you need a good plumber, my sis does contracting work in LA. She will know the name of one or two. Bah-Humbug.
:jealous:
Damn plumbing. And rent! Joel makes me smile, though. Hope things turn for the best.
Hi Mike, Sorry to hear you're having such icky plumbing issues. I certainly hope things get back to normal soon. Maureen
Dear Mike:
I can imagine your frustrations. I hate plumbing disasters and water leaks. My/our old apartments (3 for me in the same building, just moved around) had tonnes of leaks and pipe issues. I was in highschool for my first apartment and had to leave school 3 times in two weeks b/c my apartment flooded and/or I needed a plumber. What a lovely apartment complex it was. Here in this house we've had a severe leak in the bathroom from the roof through the ceiling fan in the rain and leaks spraying out of our basement foundation. Thank goodness it is a rental and not owned!
On a brighter note, I'm hoping to have time to upload some new pictures of Kaiden today! Drop by and have a peek!
Sincerely,
Dezz
Eeek, what a mess! I guess all you can do in a situation like that is go with the flow. Really, this too shall pass. I hope you went out to breakfast and will resolve to enjoy your weekend, despite the aquatic environment at your house. Plumbing happens.
Why does Joel's picture say "cancer boy?" Is cancer his zodiak sign?
Take care,
:sunny:
That sounds horrible! Try to have a Merry Christnas anyway... :lookaround:
I've been giving a lot of thought to the Internet Island topic. For some reason this is a hard one for me....I'm working on it though. :goodjob:
Boy you have had a tough couple of days. I hope that the plumbing gets fixed soon. No shower would be a real crisis for me. Good thoughts go out to you. Please give my regards to your roomie. Hope he is feeling okay this holiday season.
Kat
Mike, is it worth staying there? If he's raising the rent, your lease must be up. Unless he makes it worth your while, I think I'd look to move.
Plumbing problems are ALWAYS worse than they appear...or than what "they" tell you. I hope yours work themselves out soon. My father's name was Joel. ryc about my cafepress...I haven't sold a thing yet! You said in your comment something to the effect that I had good sales?
I think 20 is high for those stamps too...the base price that they take is 15.99...I guess they gouge you for stamps since it's kind of an unusual thing to get what you want put on a stamp. I really don't have any thought that anyone is going to buy the stamps...but I thought they were cool. Actually, that's my whole problem w/ the site...albeit, a very cool thing to offer people, they want so much themselves that by the time you tack on 5 or 10 for yourself...it makes it all a little high in price. I've ordered a tshirt for my husband so I can see what it really looks like...that's the best way. I can also change the size of the artwork...and the price...if there's something you really want, let me know and I can "customize" the size of the art and the price. I have to sell it for whatever their base price is though. I think I should be spending the time I've spent on that site on actually painting.... :wha:
Dear Mike,
I still don't have the internet set up on my laptop, but I'm using my sister's so I came to see how you are doing. Oddly enough I didn't get your e-mail (if you did send it) but heck ... I hope that you at least got your phone problem fixed from the last time I was there.
I'm sorry to read that things are getting worse instead of better at your place, but at least they're fixing the place up you know. Hopefully things will be somewhat back to normal soon.
Love,
Liz
Hi Michael. Thanks for letting me join you on the Island. Looking forward to meeting everyone.
Mike, thats a big mess. Seems the owner should pay for you guys a room while all this mess is going on. I hate it for you. Wet carpet is so horrible.
But your car is ok now? I hope the plumbers get this fixed and soon!!
Joel is cute, say hi to him for me. Hi Joel!! I did it myself .. lol
Take care, don't sink!
Peace and Love:) :heartbeat: :p
"that our lives and perceptions of "reality" can change in an instant."
a good topic for the island, no?
Scarlet said the same thing. Tomorrow is another day. But as for your plumbing woes, frankly Mike, I DO give a damn. I hope everything gets fixed pronto.
:wha:
Nothing...nothing is more hellish than plumbing problems...Bad timing too, I might add.
I hope everything gets fixed REAL SOON. and...this will be a memory. Or, better yet, when It's over, I would just erase it from my mind. Completely. No need for this type of memory.
Frankly, Scarlet, it's a helluva mess!! Kinda reminds me of my soggy, wet, rotting, moulding, leaky condo a few years ago ... only it took a year to repair. Hope your problems are plumbed much more quickly than that! Take care.
I'm a bit concerned, having noted that your profile picture hasn't changed for about two weeks. I have, however, taken note that you have reversed directions, trimmed your beard, and now sport a feather on the back of your head. In that the smile has not changed an iota, I worry that you are dead or your facial muscles are permanently constricted. It's a most pleasing smile--don't misunderstand. Thanks for your comments regarding Woman's Corner, btw--gave Lisa a big smile.
When it "rains" it pours! lol How true that is! I have never seen a plumber leave a mess like that. This is another reason I like living in a small town. News of bad work being done spreads like wildfire around here, and a tradesperson would not last long in business. We have always had excellent service in whatever we have had done. Sorry that your story is not the same!
Plumbing issues are the worst. Is it repaired, yet? Be careful, spores grown in soaked carpets can be deadly............
I have had my share of plumbing disasters in 'this old house' I live in and when the warm weather comes I have a huge job that needs to get done here where I am .. and I already told my fiance - I am not staying here when it gets done .. I need to be away from all the goings on ...its upsetting to have someone cutting your walls and leaving crap all over your space .. so I really FEEL for you .. and you have been really patient also .... My holiday wish for you is that you can stay in a nice place while they fix this mess !!!!! stay sane and happy - you are coping extraordinarily well ! xoxoxoo
Dear Mike
I hope things are much better in your world
and the plimbing problems are a thing of the past
((((HUGS))))
When the air vent is blocked, the pipe’s pressure begins to increase.
Eventually, this will result in sewer gases venting through the easiest
opening into the house. Often this will start with the highest drains in
the system, which are the ones closest to the blocked vent.

I have always disliked the idea because of the expenses.
But he's tryiong none the less. I've been using Movable-type on various websites for
about a year and am concerned about switching
to another platform. I have heard excellent things about
blogengine.net. Is there a way I can import all my wordpress content into it?
Any help would be really appreciated!
Woah! I'm really enjoying the template/theme of this blog.
It's simple, yet effective. A lot of times it's challenging to get that "perfect balance" between usability and visual appearance.
I must say that you've done a fantastic job with this.
In addition, the blog loads super fast for me on Opera.
Excellent Blog!
