MOVIE WEEKEND:
Almost every weekend I used to go out to the movies. If I had someone with which to go, I’d accompany a friend, and if not, I’d just go “stag”. Saturday or Sunday afternoons, up until the theaters raised the prices so much that a matinee performance is eight bucks a pop (including “commercials” which are now shown on movie screens). I’ve got a nice HDTV system at home, and I have Netflix, and now a Tivo with my DirecTV service in my “media room” but I still like to go “out” every now and then, first to get out of the house, and second, because nothing beats seeing a movie on a “really big screen”. I missed Robert Rodriquez’ and Frank Miller’s “Sin City” when it came out a few weeks ago, and last week Sidney Pollack’s “The Interpreter” came out. This week there were two more films added that I wanted to see, Ridley Scott’s “Kingdom of Heaven” and “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” even though I was never a fan of the book or original radio series.
My friend Jim is a fan of the books, and I dropped by his house on Sunday at about 10a.m. to see if I could interest him in coming to the movies. Now, last time I dropped by, he was immersed in this online “game” called “World of Warcraft”. He wasn’t “playing” it on Sunday morning, but he was talking to his other friend Jim on the voice hookup on instant messenger. I told them about my “Renaissance Day” video, and they both watched that along with me. Then I asked the other Jim if he was into the “World of Warcraft”. No sooner had I mentioned it than both guys signed in to the server with the online “world” and I got to see them walking around trying to kill “brutes” and “warlocks” and what have you. I got to watch both of them die three times. I’ve mentioned before that I’m not really into “video games” or “online games” or their ilk, so this wasn’t too interesting to me. I asked Jim if he wanted to see “Hitchhiker” and he was now “into the game” so passed.
I went to breakfast, and then headed over to the theater. I ended up going to see “The Interpreter” and “Kingdom of Heaven”.
I’ll award both films 8 of 10 on the MIkometer. Both Pollack and Scott have been directing films for many years. Pollack is in his 70s, and directed the excellent thriller “Three Days of the Condor” in the 70s. “Interpreter” is a stylish thriller like Condor, with Nicole Kidman as a UN interpreter from a small African nation who overhears some countrymen plotting an assasination attempt on the country’s President, who has been accused of genocide, when he comes to make a speech in front of the general assembly the following week. Sean Penn is the federal agent assigned to protect her. His backup is the acid tongued and always delightful Catherine Keener. Both Sean and Nicole are excellent actors, and although there are a couple of plot holes, the pace is kept brisk by Pollack, and the movie never settles into boredom.
When paying 8 bucks, I always go into another theater (even though this is “against the rules”) to see a “second feature” and one of the theaters was showing “Kingdom of Heaven” immediately after I walked out of “The Interpreter” so I ducked into that theater, found a seat (which is pretty easy when you’re a “single”) and settled in for some more fantastic entertainment.
Ridley Scott is known to modern audiences as the director of the Oscar winning “The Gladiator” but his first film, “The Duellists” is about swordplay, and the guy is great at directing fight and battle scenes. The “Kingdom of Heaven” is the City of Jerusalem in the 1100′s, between the first and the second Crusade, and the story is about how the city falls to the Muslim forces of the warrior Saladin after a hundred years of a fragile peace when the Christians are in charge of the city. Starring Orlando Bloom, who is growing into a fascinating action star, LIam Neeson, David Thewlis, Marton Csokas, Jeremy Irons, Edward Norton, and Brendan Gleeson, this is the film that deserves an Oscar if “Gladiator” already got one. It is far more serious “entertainment”, and the battle scenes, court intrigue, and master storytelling is on par with the great epic films of all time. I’m glad I got a chance to see this one on “the big screeen”.
I also rented a few fine films this past week. Brad Silbering’s “Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events”, (10 of 10, and now one of my favorite films) “Birth” with Nicole Kidman (7 of 10) and “House of Flying Daggers” (7 of 10) a martial arts movie akin to “Crouching Tiger, HIdden Dragon” in it’s use of cinematography and in star Zhang Ziyi who was in “Crouching Tiger”.
“Snicket’s Series of Unfortunate Events” was called a “kid’s movie” by the woman at work who recommended it, but I’m certainly no kid, and I enjoyed every frame. This is a “fantasy” movie with heart, a wicked sense of humor, and some of the best sets and setpieces since “Lord of the Rings”. The acitng, both by the “kids” Emily Browning and Kyle Aiken, and their “guardians”, Billy Connolly, Meryl Streep, and the excellent Jim Carrey is just wonderful. I had read some rather negative reviews of this film when it came out, and it was completely overlooked at the box office if memory serves, but it is fantastic entertainment, for more than “just kids”, although it is the story of three orphaned children and the “unfortunate” events which befall them. “Birth” is the story of a 10 year old child who claims to be the deceased husband of Nicole Kidman’s character, and is very involving, but needs some time to get going. “House of Flying Daggers” is visually stunning, and a great “historical” martial arts movie to boot.
I did take the camera with me yesterday when going out, but it was overcast for the early part of the day, and when I got out of the theater after four hours I didn’t want to do much of anything except go home.
I have it with me today because I plan to take some photos of the Jacaranda trees in Long Beach, which are now in full lavender bloom.
Who knows, perhaps next weekend will be a photo expedition.

I really enjoyed Kingdom of Heaven, in spite of the historical inaccuracies. Historywood wins another big one. But there was a point to it, and it did a very good job making it. Faith in God, either YHWH or Allah or some other diety, is a matter of heart and mind and the personal relationship between diety and believer. It’s a shame that all the trinkets and trappings of religion have replaced the relationship. Too many people have died for trinkets and trappings. Better to have died for one’s god than to kill for it.

Mike,
I have been wonder about that “Snickett’s” movie, and I’m glad to see that it is a rather good film. Yet, I am so bad at going out there and watching movies myself. After refusing to see “Last Sumarai” for so long (because I just don’t like Tom Cruise … LOl) I finally am starting to see bits and pieces of it on cable – and I have to admit that it does hold my interest.
Surprisingly enough though, I did get out there to watch “Sin City” a week or so go and I was glad I did. I can’t wait until it comes out on DVD though. And, this coming weekend I’ll be out watching “Kung Fu Hustle” so I hope it doesn’t turn out to be a waste of my time.
Though, it is funny how watching habits differ among people. For instance on Sunday I always am out with my brother … and this weekend he wanted to buy DVD’s. But, he can’t have the plain old DVD. It has to be the one with all the extra stuff on it. Whereas, I don’t really care. I just want the movie and don’t need to know all the behind the scenes or making of junk. Just give me the movie … and I don’t care if it’s wide or full screen. So, watching movies with my brother ends up being a test of endurance because he HAS to watch all the extra stuff first … then in the end watch the actual movie. I still need to see “Brotherhood Of The Wolf” … but from all the extra stuff it looked good … I probably fell asleep when he FINALLY played the movie … LOL!
Anyways, all that aside. I’m glad you did go to the movies and actually enjoyed what you saw. At times when I go I have to wonder which movie sucks the least (to steal a line from Dennis Miller) and watch that one.
And, I can’t wait to see your pictures of the trees. The rain might have been a pain in the butt, but it left us with a wonderfully verdant Spring. Plus, I’m sure you learned your lesson about online gaming – especially one’s so involved like Warcraft. Never … NEVER … ask about it if you want to go somewhere with that person.
Love & Friendship,
Liz
Hi Mike.
Thanks for you comment. It was quite nice.
Sorry the video crashed your computer. It was just a Yahoo hosted one. A lot of people had trouble opening it. I don’t know why? It works great for me.
Anyway, the movie is okay. There’s some editing that could have happened. But, as you guessed, I watched it mostly for Dylan’s role in it.

:sunny:Thanks for the info on the movies. :yes:Yes it is nice to see a movie as it was meant to be seen on large wide screen:spinning:.. I remember seeing “Out of Africa” at the cineorama dome , is it still there do you know?
I haven’t been out there in years…:eek:more like decades …… I used to love to go to the large old movies theatres in Hollywood to see the movies. OH! Well those days are long gone and times are different now ! I don’t think I would recognize Hollywood! I did take a peek at your photos of the Chinese theatre/hollywood and believe me the whole area has changed. We used to go to the HAmburger Hamlet across from the G Chinese Theatre after the show. Anyway I like the “Gladiator” must have watched it over a dozen times. I love historical based movies. I really like Lleam Neeson but I hear he is not in the whole film gets killled off in the first part????Will wait till “Kigdom of Heaven” comes out in DVD …good moves I can watch over and over…. I like the DVDs with the extra stuff… as the other comment stated..I enjoy the interviews with the stars and directors on how and why and etc on getting the movie made.
Thoughts through the looking glass K
Wishin’ I had more time for movies. “Interpreter” is on my list of wannasees. Kidman and Penn. Now there’s a pair to draw to.
I can only enjoy movies in video or DVD for they have closed captioning and I am nearly deaf. I want to see the Lemony Snickett one and was glad to read your review. We have a wonderful library here with up-to-date movies that rent for a dollar for DVD’s and fifty-cents for a vhs. I am priveleged to live here and in an age where the hearing-impaired are allowed to enter the hearing world.
I have never been a big movie fan, I like some films, that is all. I am more of a book worm.
poet… philosopher… fool ..
(i was reading this rather long winded comment you left on dillon’s page)
im not sure what provoked my curiousity more…
its message… or its sincerity.
… every good writer…. i beleive…. has a fatal flaw….
they dont “read”.
….. they’re “selective readers”.
i felt the need to tell you something…
sometimes…. its not the sheer enormosity of our wordly gains that glorify us…. its the value of each tiny segment of that vibrant tapestry of texture … that matters more.
personally…. I’d HAPPILY feel enthralled… by eight heartfelt messages…..
instead of 73 … mindless ones.
you have some genuine readers.
cherish them.
p.s> dillon’s a damn good writer
i can’t believe you rated lemmony snickett higher than house of flying daggers…. and i’m dying to see kingdom of heaven- maybe this weekend. when did movies get soooo expensive? and i can’t believe matinees are $8 each- plus i believe in the big screen experience for most films are created for that environment- and lose something on housesize screens…
btw- we’ve been floating around each other, in and out of the same bloggers almost a year now, and i decided it was finally time to say hi- so “hi!”
i really miss getting out to see movies as i used to. can you believe the last one i saw was The Matrix? Yes…. that long ago *uhg* but i do collect alot of movies at home, tape them from cable as i can, and enjoy more than i could ever list. Your reviews make me want to find some way to go get out and see those
Snicket’s Series of Unfortunate Events sounds especially good to me!
thanks for sharing that one Mike!
