  • Mother’s Day Prayer
    Poetry by Michael F. Nyiri
    Sunday, May 8, 2005 7:20 a.m.

Mother can you see my salty tears,
Splashing arbitrarily erratic through the years
I really didn’t appreciate those special times
You goaded me to perfection, which I treated as a crime
I fought you much in the end of our days
And I know you forgave me for these jumbled ways
My memories now only gather the rich and the sweet
And in my memory room no bad times ere repeat

My prayer is for you, in memory’s thrall
As I pray with unabashed sorrow, and pure love’s call
I call to the firmament, wish your soul heav’nly peace
A final resting place for rash, oblivious life’s surcease
I pray on this Mother’s Day that your soul is at rest
And that your short but full life did turn out for the best

Mom I pray the pain and sadness finally left you
And visions of unruly children can’t upset you
You asked for only peace and quiet while on Earth
But at times I know the cacaphony gave you mirth
We’re all split up, you see, now in an older age
Who ever thought that in those times we’d see this stage
Our familial love was strong and hard, but pure
And as I pause this day to pray for you so sure

Mommy I know you’re in a better place
But I miss you badly through hard times with grace
You instilled in me a sense of good and right
I open doors for women and help the suffering in their plight
I see the goodness through calamity with ease
And I think of you whenever my thoughts appease
You held us tightly through our youth with care
And to you I indite this glorious Mother’s Day Prayer

  • As a mother with a son, wow. If my son ever wrote anything half as beautiful, I would be hugely honoured. You honour your mother, her gifts to you, her memory, greatly. xo

  • Mike,

Thanks for the sweet comments!  This is a very heartfelt poem – it helps me know you – and that’s the part I like best about blogging.

    Have an incredible week:sunny:

  • I can’t write poems like this somehow, I think I am too a distant a poet. Great poem of course.

  • What a lovely way to honor your mother!  I read this one several times so I could really enjoy it.  Thanks, once again, for sharing your gift.

  • Michael, coming to see if you had been around recently I was aimlessly wondering through some of your blog and found this poem. Truly beautiful. Your poetry is always like this though, able to really get to and into the heart….  Hope all is well with you. ~Barbi
