    1983: After FedMart stores went out of business, I finally found work but not in management. I worked at Gemco stores in Culver City, splitting shifts to get hours, working on the overnight stocking shift, and also making myself available for day work, so I got little sleep. I had quit drinking, and remained completely "sober" for 5 years. I lived in Redondo Beach, rooming with Cecil, and had a woman in my life, Leslie, a hostess at one of the restaurants I frequented. The poems of 83 and 84 are a poetic oasis in a decade when I didn't write much. (In 85,86,88,and 89 I didn't write any poetry at all.)

    Yes, I kicked out the teeth of convention
    And I scattered the leaves of oblivion
    I drank gallons of wine
    As I turned back the time
    And my future paled o'er with obsidian
    I stamped on the clockface of sanity
    Grew disgusted with cookiecut reality
    Put down schooners of beer
    As I smiled with a leer
    Wouldn't join at the front with the soldiery

    I'm a mad hatter, my friends and my foes
    I'll stumble round life on my hands and my toes
    Dailing love on the phone to a disconnect number
    The years fall so quickly I fear

    Watch me laugh hard at the unlucky players
    Paint myself to a corner with layers and layers
    The booze might be gone I'm electric with ease
    but these still are old clothes that I wear

    Outside I paint the walls,
    But the brush bristles don't bend much
    Outside I close doors
    And if I may listen no one will know

    Outside it's raining
      and cold
    But inside is where I'll be wet
    I can suffer sorrow moan and sigh
    And I feel as if I can feel a cry.

    Outside I put up the shingles
    But the nails are bent and rusty
    Outside I cynicise
    And if I care I won't let you know.

    Outside the wind blows
      and the limbs shake
    But inside I may shake e'en more
    I can cover fate's blessing, hard as I try
    I feel as if I can feel a cry.

    Outside is how I wish to be seen
    And inside my heart is a shadow
    Outside the pickings are rather lean
    And close up the book for tomorrow.

    The louder the voice
    The more shallow lies the complaint
    The more erratic the gesture
    The more meaningless the action

    I try to counteract the
    screams with serenity
    The wildness with solidity
    But I lose to louder voices
    Until I raise my own

    Communication with
    stubborn conceits
    yeilds no fruit

    Nothing is accomplished
    No one listens

    I hear the loud voices
    but I find them difficult to understand.

    Xanga ate my last comment, so I'm trying again. I enjoyed these poems. The image of "building" the exterior persona appealed to me, rusty nails and all. The form is so different in each piece, it was delightful to read them in conjunction. Thank you.

  • I empathize about the last one...'the louder the voice...'
    To me, the voices are my consciense, (sp) my id, my ego, tapes in my head that drive me insane, when I seek serenity.
