  • Yes, But Is It Art?

The latest section of my vast website on which I have been working is my art gallery. Here are some composite pieces recently featured in the computer art section of the “Yes, But Is It Art? Gallery at AllThingsMike.

The first is an image derived from a number of sources. The little girl of course is Sailor Moon, who is an animie cartoon character. The larger girl and the leopard are from a Frank Frazetta painting. Cloudscape is from one of my photos. The train is from a photo I took at Traveltown in Griffith Park last year. The street on the left in the background is from the Small Town in Lost Angeles photo series, and the grass is from a photo taken at the Arboretum. More and more of my own photography is showing up in my composite artwork. This image is now on the main page to the Yes, But Is It Art? website at the bottom, and was created in December 2004.

Here is my first composite for 2005, entitled, simply enough, “Self Portrait 2005″. This was almost completely gleaned from images in my photography, except for the castle, which is from the Webshots gallery of Larry Hauge. Some of you might recognize the wind whipped palms from a photo I posted here on WhenWordsCollide on January 12th. The little Michelin men in front of the castle and going to the theater were captured for the Advertising section of the Cultural Blender. but never used. The photo of my Eclipse, me, the theater, and the birds, which is really one bird cloned into a flock, are from other photos. The peacocks littered about are from a photo taken at the Arboretum last year.

Back in 2001, the first composites I created were for the Betty Boop Pages. Then I began an ambitious series utilizing cartoon characters grouped in “scenes” for the Cartoons Composite Gallery in the Cartoons section of the Cultural Blender. There is a pretty good essay about cartoons (if I do say so myself)  written in 2002 on the Cartoons webpage. I just recently completed the image above to insert in the Cartoons section in the near future. It shows Mickey Mouse, Minnie, Hoppity Hooper, Pinnochio, Fry from Futurama, and Ed Big Daddy Roth’s Rat Fink character hanging out on Hollywood Blvd. The background is from my Hollywood Blvd. photo shoot and the cars were stolen from the web. You might notice John Kricfalusi’s Ren and Stimpy in a radio station in a “window” on the side of the right hand building.

Clicking on any of the above composite images will bring up the full size image in another window. Most of the images look better in their full size mode, but as usual, I never post anything on WhenWordsCollide which is over 450 pixels wide so the webpage doesn’t need scrolling on any browser. (Oh, and if you’ve never seen the “art project” from which the full size Gumby riding my old motorcycle on the banner comes from, CLICK HERE.)

  • These images are quite impressive. Thank you by the way for your ongoing comments. It is greatly appreciated. Although I don’t find my sketches something to brag about. There is that saying though,”The artist themself is their own worst critic.”
