"It's God's will." "That's your destiny." "Things happen for a reason."
Over the course of time, things happen which aren't in the plan. We like to think that we have set our course, checked the coordinates, and are setting sail on the sea of life with excellent intentions and a well constructed map, but off the pages of the map, winds which haven't yet blown our way are whirling with intensity. We just can't see them until they shred our sails and drown us in regrets.
The trick to life is to make plans for these unplanned events which tend to set upon us willy nilly and without warning. When the preacher maintains "It's God's will" to answer a child's questions about why Granddaddy died, the child doesn't understand why God "works in these mysterious ways". Of course everybody dies, so the preacher imparts wisdom. As a child, freshly initiated into the wonderful world and it's many secrets, sometimes things don't seem to be "fair".
When something happens which isn't in the "master plan", especially if there are negative implications, most people are immediately hit with a great sense of loss, grief, and "shoulda woulda coulda". They agonize over whether if they had done something differently or driven a different route, or woke up later or earlier, or whatever, the unforseen gale of circumstance wouldn't be blowing their way. Odds are the force of the gale will knock them over no matter how much agonizing they go through.
A lot of things have happened in my life which aren't on the map, and I tend to adjust my course to correct for this. When something happens which blows me away with the natural intensity of consequence, I might respond with the knee-jerk: "Why did this happen to me?" but when I really think it over, I understand the chaotic nature of time and circumstance. "Things happen for a reason." And whatever happens cannot be gauged or interpreted. The "force" which makes up the Universal Mind, the "Godhead" which dictates reality, the immutable but happenstance nature of the timeline of life. Events keep happening, irrespective of our individual wants or needs at any given time.
We just have to dust ourselves off and keep ourselves headed in the right direction, and the whirlpools and eddies which bother us all the time, especially when we least expect it, should be, if not "planned for" at least acknowledged. If we can acknowledge the surprise and shock which knocks us for a loop sometimes, this is a grand step towards our eventual enlightenment on this plane. It might look bad to us now, but in a few minutes we'll realize that it was going to happen, and we can't do anything about it.

I believe most things happen for a reason, too, Mike. Sometimes we have no idea why certain things happen though, and it can really hurt at times, too.
I haven't gone to church in years now, but I definitely believe in God.
