  • "Deadly Family Matters" A New Poem

    "Deadly Family Matters"
    Poetry by Michael F. Nyiri

    Human life so precious
    Every person special and sublime
    Whether by love or accident,
    families grow.

    Hopefully love
    replaces accidental circumstance
    and
    in time
both love and the family grow fuller
    If not always together,
at least together in spirit and celebration.
    Anger, allegiance, arduous times
    Togetherness, happy times and smiles

    People matter
    Family matters
    Although
The matters of some families give us pause
    We are shocked and saddened
    surely sickened by sanquine reports
of shootings and slicings and shallow graves

    A grave report of
    the state of humanity
    when family matters
don't seem to matter to some
    And the heinous harrowing
    hollow horrible misgivings
    of seemingly normal people
    cause pain to all
when they turn on their families
or on the families of others

    We are all alone
And yet we are all family
For those who anger too quickly
For those in so much pain
    the only solution seems to
    reign pain on others;
    For those about to claim
    that nothing really matters
    please take pause
    before taking matters into
    your shaking hands.

    Family matters
    to me
    to you
    to all

BEHIND THE POETRY: I knew I was going to write a new poem this week. I've been feeling particularly depressed this past week, and I usually write when the demons arrive. When I'm content and happy, usually I'm not that poetic. I've written reams discussing this in the past, so won't weigh in on depression and creativity yet again. The poem I thought I was going to write hasn't come yet, but each time I open a browser window for one of the news sites I read, I fall deeper into depression. This poem is a reflection of my feelings concerning the seeming "outbreak" of killings this week. Most of them seem to involve families, and there are yet more orphans created whenever some misguided person decides to get rid of his family. I'm sickened by senseless killing, whether in time of war or peace. Anymore, peace seems to only be a fading symbol, and a memory, if in fact, the world were ever, or will ever be, at peace. Sadly, my few poems this year, including this one, have been inspired by not my own depression, but the worldwide depression which causes people to kill people, including kids who don't even have a chance. Peace out to you all.MFN/ppf

  • I like this because it approaches the subject in all of its aspects... how wonderful it can be, how important it is, and how tragic it can be when neglected or abused. Good job sir!

  • Your poem is interesting - as well as being well written.

As you may have noted, I tend to personalize my comments on your stuff - this thought behind this poem reminds me of my one-time close association with a mass murderer (he was my teaching intern until I got him fired - I was apparently the only person who saw him as weird and unfit to be a teacher)

His background was apparently one of a not-very-pleasant childhood; a doting mother and domineering father. He apparently had no remorse over the girls he killed ( The police suspected as many as thirty - he was convicted of killing eight -one or two at a time) and I suspect that they were substitutes for those family members he hated.

When I got him fired, my wife told me I had better watch out as he might try something. My reply was "No he's afraid of me - he will take it out on some other poor soul he can dominate".  Little did I know, he had already started his killing spree - which continued for two or three more years, during which time he was employed as a policeman and later as a sheriff's deputy. He got those jobs by carefully concealing his teaching failure - if anyone had asked me, I certainly would have warned them - and probably have been sued  for defamation of character.
I think he was fairly typical of those sociopaths that are unfortunately always with us. Their actions are sometimes accepted, as in War, but most often are random and senseless or apparently so. I'm sorry - I don't think this will do much to lessen your depression - I know just thinking about it depresses me.

  • Ha annoying Orange resting on your shoulder! I fancy this poem, thoughtful and crisp.

  • This is a wonderful poem because it touches on family and humanity -- the foundation we create our lives on. I'm sorry you are feeling depressed. Please know that we all love you here. Take care.

  • If I could vote you for something on Xanga it would be "most interesting mind on Xanga" All of the many things that you do and make a journal of are fascinating. Two thumbs up. :D   I did enjoy the video of you dancing as well on youtube :D :D:D:D

  • I just wish more people see things your way. A lot of people lose their humanity as they shove their way through life, making them more and more sadistic.

  • I have wrote many poems when I have been depressed, so I think I know where you're coming from.

As far as the news goes, it is enough to make you question our society and our collective humanity.  I just said to my fiance' the other day that I think this world really is depraved.

I'm really sorry that you're depressed.  If you ever want to talk, I'm here or on FB.

  • Amazing how you can make art out of pain.  I used to think that if we promoted peace, that we could inspire.  I found myself in mulitiple hostile situations and I guess with the violence I've lived with, it may be impossible because I'm forced to fight back.

  • @MrTrololo - Eduard, One of my "trademarks" in poetry construction is to give a view from "the personal to the universal". I also claim, like Shakespeare's Hamlet, to be able to see every side of every question. Hopefully, this has helped me to grow old and wise. (Cause I'm forever cultivating that "interesting mind".)

@tychecat - Dick, Certainly don't mind being personal. I love it when you post a more personal than political entry. I'm forever looking for the "person behind the blog." In point of fact, that's some story right there in your comment. I'd like to read a more in depth version of your experiences with wacko nutjobs. I've got one or two stories (still to share, believe it or not) which involve stalking and workplace violence but nothing on this scale. Wow.
@reckless_eagle - Victor, we live, over and over again if necessary, until we see things in a more enlightened way, and then we reach the end of the various circles of existence through which we have traveled on our journey toward bliss. Those who shove get the chance to chill out a bit next time, and hopefully they'll learn something then!
@gottobereal64 - Gretchen, I chalk it up to the beginning of the holiday season. I saw two instances at around drive time the other evening where two homeless people were on opposite sides of both the on ramp and the off ramp of the 405, holding worn cardboard signs. And these killings. The NY Nanny killing was the one which actually sparked the pulling out of notepad and the writing of the poem.
@hesacontradiction - Ann, "art out of pain". Yes, that's a wonderful description. Now, thank the Lord and the cosmos, I'm not in pain anymore, but my personal pain inspired a lot of artistic endeavor, and so, certainly, does my psyche when faced with universal pain.
