VOR: Have Your Chick-Fil-A and Eat it?
I love the internet. I've always believed this marvelous invention, (which wasn't around when I was a young man) could one day be a pathway to enlightenment, could open level headed discussions amongst a variety of disparate people, and could hopefully help to spur mankind, usually so stubborn and naively single minded into mass tolerance and understanding. A sort of digital "free press" filled with the idealism and the promise of mass communication for a true global community.
I love the internet. I've always been quite humored by the fact that "truth and bullshit" can settle side by side without any seeming irony in the wilds of cyberspace. Even though we've come pretty far along with cyberpublishing, and we can marvel at a medium more powerful and beautiful than simple "television", containing wondrous graphics, and eye popping webpage layouts, we are even more overcome with advertisements (with wondrous graphics and eye popping webpage layouts) now targeted to our every seeming want and need. There's more "information" than ever, and more distractions as well. The global "Algonquin's Table" I envisioned the internet "could" be never happened.
Truth and bullshit still sit side by side, however. And sometimes when I really stop to think about it, the age of information has become a deluge of facts, hearsay, and lies, with no cohesive analysis or context unless one is truly committed to making an attempt to find it.
From where I sit this evening, one of the more troubling bits of "information" on my personal "scanner" is the ongoing violence which has been happening in the fair city of Anaheim, California, a few miles south of where I live. There have been clashes, looting, and rioting in the streets for most of the week, following a couple of police shootings over the weekend. Up to 1000 protesters were involved, and 24 were arrested. This must just be a local news story. The folks at Disney probably don't think it's too important for tourism if everybody on the internet thinks they're going to walk into a riot on the way to Cars Land. I'm overemphasising, of course, but you know what I mean. This is just not a "trending" item on the internet.
What I seem to see all over the place is a big fight over some remarks the CEO of fast food joint Chick-Fil-A made about marriage. Even on Xanga, I've read entries where people are REALLY UPSET over this latest story du jour.
The brouhaha, which so far has not involved anyone being killed (except the poor chickens with the bad luck to be a part of CEO Dan Cathy's extended family) or hurt, is over an interview which, had it occurred "pre internet" would not have made a dent in anyone's personal news cycle. I will admit, until a couple of minutes ago (truthfully, about two hours) I hadn't an idea what this was about, and didn't care. I don't care now, but after a few informed clicks of my mouse, I know what's going on, and why it's important to some. The Voice of Reason tells me it's somewhat ridiculous to be "trending" at all.
The riots (they aren't really riots by the way, not like soccer riots in other parts of the world) which to me is a more troubling story, should be trending. The reasons why the Chick-Fil-A story is trending is because it can stand in for someone's agenda, and therien lies the rub. I'll get to the facts in a moment. If gays were tearing down West Hollywood, maybe I'd see mention of it on Yahoo's Today's Highlights ticker on my internet home page. The protest in Anaheim involves people the media keeps calling "Latinos" (a dreaded term amongst Mexican Americans, Salvadorian Americans, Chilean Americans, you get the idea) whose children were killed by policemen. The L.A. area has a long history of trigger happy cops. It's an election year in America. And the Chick-Fil-A story boils down to "Christians vs. Gays". Always a good battle to stir up the blogosphere. The "mainstream media" now quotes from the blogosphere. Journalism drowned a long time ago in the deluge of information on the internet.
The facts are these. Chick-Fil-A is a company which sells 380 calorie chicken sandwiches. The company has no political views. They just want you to "eat mor chikin (sp.)" They always had a gal in a short skirt giving away free samples in the Del Amo mall years ago when I shopped there. Some people have questioned how the chickens are treated. It's fast food. It's a business. They get their chickens from Pilgrim's Pride. These aren't free range chickens. But I digress. In an interview on July 2nd in North Carolina's Biblical Recorder newspaper, and later published online in the Baptist Press, CEO Dan Cathy simply stated his views on traditional marriage. After a few days in the 24 hour news cycle, his "message" is being interpreted as "anti gay." At a time when roughly 50% of America could be thought of as championing "Christian values" and the other half championing gay rights, I guess it's not a stretch of the imagination to see why this small interview in a regional church newspaper has become the kindling for the latest battle in the Christians vs. Gays war. Now celebrities and sports figures are tweeting their support, or lack of it. Kermit the frog has jumped ship and the Henson company won't be spokesfrogs for the chain anymore. (Frogs don't usually snack on chicken, by the way)
The mayors of Boston and Chicago don't want any Chick-Fil-As in their towns. Everyone is throwing bits of chicken into everyone else's face. It's a chicken fricassee of almost Biblical proportions. Possibly most of the people "weighing" in on the subject at this late date are hopelessly clueless about the facts. The "pro gay" forces will protest against Chick-Fil-A for being intolerant and outdated. The Republican Righteous and the Christian Coalition (I'm making these names up, but hey, this is the internet) will speak out about how "traditional values" are being trounced by those wacky liberals. Christian news organizations (and possibly Fox News, but this is just conjecture on my part) are already calling for all the faithful to boycott the boycott by going right out and digging in to those fatty cholesterol filled chicken sandwiches!
When I listen to the Voice of Reason, it tells me that no matter what the facts of any argument are in these cyberspecific times, opposing parties are going to pounce on anything that can be considered as fodder for their own misbegotten arguments. Dan Cathy believes in the "traditional" union of a man and a woman as marriage. I held this view up until a couple of years ago. I changed my mind. (I was a member of the Baptist church and I wanted to be a preacher at one time in my life. I'll just throw that out.) I'm sure somebody on the internet is writing possibly right now that if men can marry men, and women can marry women, then the (il)logical next step must be bestiality. People will want to marry their pets. "At what point will this madness stop?" they are possibly asking.
So what if Dan Cathy believes in what he believes? Chick-Fil-A is just a fast food joint, not a political lynchpin. I won't be eating there any time soon, but I'm watching my weight. I don't eat a lot of meat, even chicken, partly because of how they treat those poor animals in order to fatten them up. Frankly, it makes me sick. I mean, really sick. But that's beside the point. And so is any brouhaha raised over something that someone at some point in history could have said in a regional newspaper or magazine, before the age of Twitter and clueless blogwriters endlessly feeding on any bits of chicken they can process for their own means and agendas.
For some reason, I'm reminded of a little "sales pitch" I used to give back when I was in retail management in the nursery trade. We used to sell steer manure and chicken manure, which cost a lot more. When customers would ask about the difference, I'd go on and on about why chicken manure was better all around for nurturing their plants and flowers. I could wax poetic about the positive results they'd obtain when they purchased more expensive chicken manure. I always ended the spiel by saying "There you have it. Chicken shit is what you should be using on your garden, and bullshit is what I've been feeding you for the last ten minutes."
Well, gotta go and read about riots in Anaheim. I hope when you listen to the bullshitters, and read the various tweets, retweets, and detritus of our beloved internet, you don't listen to the obvious mistruths and fallacies, but do a little more digging into the chickenshit and bullshit and hear the Voice of Reason.

EDIT: 7/27/12 7:00am pdt. According to the O.C. Register, cops "opened fire on a burglary suspect" last night. That's all that seems to be known at this point in time. The Times L.A. Now blog posted an entry last night which states there is some mobilization online involving protests of the Anaheim police shootings. Protests can ignite pretty easily into rioting. BTW, for those interested: HERE is a Voice of Reason column I wrote about guns and shootings in the Los Angeles area back in early 2011. Tonight I'll be watching the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympics and tomorrow I think I may be up in downtown (L.A., not Anaheim) taking pictures of the just opened Grand Park. (before any more Occupy L.A. protestors ruin it like they did City Hall's lawn last year. MFN/ppf

Riots in Anaheim (and perhaps again tonight), and unrest in Laguna Hills over the grand opening of a new Chick-fil-A -- Oh, yes, and Romney upsetting the Mayor of London over the Olympics security -- what will happen next?
More likely after reading this blog I would prefer to call you Theologian Mike.
Still you are not stirring the pot but asking and pleading for more civility and more honest discussions.
There is a need for calmness this political season. I think we can vote better if we are calm and civil.
Looks like Los Angeles is not that lawless or riot prone for now. There are huge numbers of Latins who are busy going to work and doing their best to get ahead. I suppose the Orange County police will come up with a strategy to detain all the trouble makers. We have more video cameras now than at any point in history. If they hide their faces, arrest them immediately.
keep rockin' it mr. mike - appreciate the rationale perspective! i need to be doin' me some of that weight watchin' - in the downward way...
Voice of Reason, indeed! There aren't many Chick-Fil-A's in Jersey, in fact I only know of one in particular, and I've never eaten there, so when asked my opinion on a boycott, well, I haven't got one. And I shouldn't be eating 380 calorie chicken sandwiches anyway. Yikes, that's a lot. If we're going to talk about a business, we should talk about what the business stands for in ways that affect its customers. Like selling greasy, high-calorie chicken that was raised inhumanely. Where's PETA when you want them?
Riots, geez. I'm terribly out of touch with the news cycle, so I knew nothing about them. In fact, the only reason I know anything about this Chicken fiasco is because of Xanga. In semi-related news, approximately 6 million egg-laying chickens in the midwest have died due to a heat wave. But I only know that because I work for a supermarket, and the price of eggs is skyrocketing. Anyway, the opinions of the CEO shouldn't even matter. I have no idea what the CEO of my company believes about gay marriage, it's irrelevant to his job as much as it is to Chicken Guy's job.
Well said, and you know, this whole Chick-Fil-A is getting wayyyy out of hand.
ryc : Yes, I'm a joker. I don't take myself seriously any more. People see me as the Prince Of Chaos anyway.
Great post!
Love the photo, Mike.
I think the one thing that lends some credence to the Chick-Fil-A hate is that the company donates to the Family Research Council, which is officially listed as a hate organization by the Southern Poverty Law Center. That seems to be what people are worried about more than what the boss himself actually believes. What do you think?
Glad you changed your view though. Open mind. That doesn't happen with baptist dogmatism very often. I grew up baptist. Christian school and I was also going to be a theologian and a minister.........
You write with weight and reason, and the best blog on whole Chick-Fil-A whatchamacallit.
Love the chicken shit vs bullshit line
I know a lot of people are anti Chickfila bc of gay rights. I'm pro bc I love the food and not every decision in life should be political.
This morning someone posted a poster that (cleverly) asked, if you boycott Chic-fil-a because they're anti-gay, when are you going to boycott gas that comes from oil that comes from countries that execute homosexuals? Can't think of the exact name of the Xangan. LKJSlain
Well said and the world today si such a violent, frightening place. I was talking to TD about how the mental health clinics/behavioral medicine as they are called today have all been shut down in a lot of areas where they used to monitor the mentally ill, and make sure they took their medication. We now have non medicated mentally ill wandering the streets. An unmedicated schizophrenic is a dangerous person of high intelligence, and that is a dangerous situation.
This is simply a though that crossed through my mind as I can not see how these people can be sane to do what they are doing.I have never been to Chick whatever it is called as they are not located here, but if they were and their food was, good and reasonably priced I would go there. Many people refuse to shop at Walmart for whatever reason but it is the only shopping center with in 100 miles, so I shop there. My point is that no matter where we shop some places support what we do not agree with.
It's sad how politics get involved into things they shouldn't be. And I'm not talking just about chicken, I'm talking about soccer too, even though I hate soccer
But politics suck into everything here in Europe, especially in Croatia where politics control everything. It's very sad thing to see and it's ruining our sports :/(
I left a comment on one of the posts about this saying I'd never eat at that place. My reasons are related to yours, as they treat the chickens in a barbaric way and I'm vegetarian. The person who had posted was so busy frothing at the mouth that she apparently didn't even read my response before attacking me for supporting protesting people. Very odd. If people want to boycott that place, they should. I hope they boycott McDonald's too and all the other places that slaughter animals after mistreating them so some selfish person can have a snack. But that's just me. Interesting post. I came through a rec.
I live in SoCal and I didn't know there was rioting in Anaheim!
Latinos don't mind being called Latinos so much as say Salvadorans hate being called Mexican and Mexicans hate other Latinos being called Mexicans. And some Mexicans are tired of being called any of it because they identify as American. My kids are half-Mexican and they prefer to call themselves half Mexican/half white when necessary... or they say my dad is Mexican and my mom is white.
The problem is in his interview it appears he states that his company (not him) is "guilty, as charged" when it comes to supporting the traditional family. If you are going to go on record about your company like that, you should expect a shitstorm these days! If Mr. Cathy offers that up to the world, he should expect all that comes with it.
I too believe in my head that marriage is just between one man and one woman, that's the default in my head and it makes no sense to me to do otherwise. But here's the thing, once you think about the benefits of marriage-- shared health care, simpler inheritance, joint custody of children, property issues, and next of kin laws, then it doesn't make one ounce of sense for the government or people to deny two people who love each other the right to marry.
Anti-gay marriage: Everyone has the right to marry. (Except it has to be the opposite sex.)
Pro-gay marriage: Everyone has the right to marry someone they love.
Let's be honest... which one shows the compassion that Jesus taught? I'm a Christian Republican and I don't vote against gay marriage.
**And people already want to marry their pets.
@TiredSoVeryTired - "And some Mexicans are tired of being called any of it because they identify as American." Dear Tired, So true. (I should be working, and haven't done my "replies" for this post yet,) Just wanted to say I always love to find fellow Xangans from SoCal. I "met" my last galfriend Liz on Xanga. She lived in Boyle Heights. Love the photo of you in Navy boot camp. You look SO young! I saw a sign on a Mexican taco stand at the O.C. Fair one year stating something along the lines of "We're not Latino, We're not Hispanic. We're not Chicano. We're MEXICAN." I can hardly wait for some future perfect time when we can dispense with all the labels and we're just "people".
@baldmike2004 - "I can hardly wait for some future perfect time when we can dispense with all the labels and we're just 'people'."
If that's the case, I will assume you are opposed to people refering to you as male and use gender-neutral pronouns on a regular basis to speed up this day when we are seen as simply people.
this demonstrates what "people" are insterested in... although, as you implied, there is also the possibility that some person with plenty of resources may also be behind it as it would be very easy to make a topic "trend" if you have the money to pay for it
@baldmike2004 - I was 20 when my boot camp photo was taken, so I was young! lol Yeah, I'm sure you can ask ten Mexicans what they like to be called and you'll get all kinds of answers. lol
It is not so much a poor decision that they have chosen the stance they have, but at this most delicate time when there is an acknowledgement and a gentle and friendly handshake, if you will, going forth between the straight and the gay at this time.
And this - chicken company - seek to upset this, and the people - just - will not have this.
My G/F told me recently a woman came under fire for saying, you should see the new Batman movie, it's to die for, and she got in trouble for that statement.

I think the point is, people today are seeking martyrs, and when we come up shy, we start grasping at burning straws, that often we ignite ourselves.
@EmilyandAtticus -
Meat will always be popular. Now I will admit, I am pretty sure I could become a vegetarian if I could afford it. I know I could eat a Boca Burger every day cause those things are just delish but they're kinna spensive next to the real thing.
But eating meat also hearkens all the way through biblical times. Fish is a kind of meat too and, according to story, Jesus fed those great many people fish and bread those years ago.
According to story, God liked burned offerings. The smell of meat ? Or the remorse of the sacrifice ? Subject to interpretation.
Chickens are animals, some people may argue fish are animals too. The fact is we're on top of the food chain and I think man has worked a little too hard to take himself down a notch without a fight.
We are a funny species of creation. While some may seek healthful means of cohabitation we still have those out there who would dearly like a deep-fried Snicker's bar or even a stick of deep-fried butter which is anything except.
I go with - if I'm hungry and it tastes good - I eat it. And if you've got chicken nuggets with honey mustard sauce, I am so there ! ♥
If people don't want their Chick-Fil-A, calories laden goodies, just send those food to the starving people, i.e. Africa.
@dw817 - I'm an atheist so Biblical times stories do nothing for me. If you eat animal corpses after the animals have been tormented and made to suffer horribly then I can see why you would want to brag about that. I don't care what you do and have no idea why you felt compelled to write me this novel. You could have just said "I'm a selfish jerk and don't care who suffers for my snacks" and it would have accomplished the same thing. The rest of your argument is just bull and not worth acknowledging.
@EmilyandAtticus -
You're a sweet girl. I'm a Theist so I can understand you being a bit of an atheist. You might enjoy reading an article I wrote HERE.
Everything - everyone suffers, E&A. If you are really concerned about the suffering of living things then you will have to stop breathing, you won't be able to put one foot in front of the other lest you step on an ant or smaller insect.
You see, it goes both ways. I used to be like you, worrying about every little living thing. And then it was found that even plants have feelings.
http://www.collegian.psu.edu/archive/2008/12/09/recent_studies_have_proven_pla.aspx
Nothing benefits in this world unless something somewhere suffers.
It's a fact of the universe and one you might become acquainted with.
It is to a matter of degree that you choose the path your life-course will take you.
It is only when you deliberately go out of your way to cause harm to living things for the SPORT of it, =THAT= is where I draw the line, that to me is inhumane. I have no love for game hunters.
Mankind may or may not be able to survive entirely as a vegetarian, I don't know the statistics on this. Perhaps you do.
But all thing suffer. It is a way of life - and death. The only reason plants don't =SEEM= to be in pain is because visibly, to the HUMAN eye, it cannot be seen.
But that does not discount the fact, they, too, can feel pain. And when you have your salad, you too, in a manner of speaking, are committing murder.
I remember working for a florist and a woman came in who placed a large order and at the last minute changed her mind and left. The flowers and roses were cut and at the end of the day the manager was going to throw them away in the trash.
I got very upset and said, no, you can't do that ! There were so many of them ! I said they have feelings too !
He said what does, confused.
I said the flowers.
He said you're crazy, they're just flowers. I know what I'm doing, and he threw them in the trash, like 3 dozen ! And I - cried. I was so upset by that.
I retrieved them at the last minute to bring them home later and found myself fired the next day for going against the manager's wishes.
So if it makes any difference, I did try and save some plants, because I felt - they did have feelings. And maybe I was young then and maybe what I did was terribly wrong.
I'm sorry if you took offense to chicken nuggets. I like the way they taste and I'm not alone in that belief. Today for instance, me and Chris are going out to Del Taco and I'm going to get two tacos for lunch, both of which contain meat I'm sure.
If you judge me a monster for that - that is your prerogative.
If you are seriously concerned for the welfare of animals being used in restaurants, there are a great many organizations you can join that directly involve people in the prevention of slaughter of animals - if you are willing to take the time to look - and take the time to put for your energy and effort to move in their cause.
You could burn up a great many years of your life in this endeavor and perhaps, on your deathbed you may feel you have done some good in the world in this.
And perhaps you may. But that - is up to you.
There are also a great many organizations that work towards animals benefiting mankind. There is a gentle article on that HERE.
I could never voluntarily hurt an animal. I remember wrecking my car to avoid hitting a squirrel years ago that was running across the road, and to this day when I drove, to my knowledge, I have not run over a single animal.
But you just go on condemning me, because it won't change my views. I will still eat that taco. All life is sacred. But we must move on in this world, E&A.
I think in light of more serious news, such as what happened on July 20th, the rioting in California, fires that are rampant, homes lost, number of cops being shot, etc., etc., Chick-Fil-A hoo-ha is out of proportion. However, what I don't understand is why we have to focus on the term "marriage" in terms of two people of the same sex. If it doesn't fit the concept of "marriage" of male and female (which in my view is pretty much of a social custom inasmuch as the divorce rate is so high), then don't use the term. Why not designate a lawful "civil union" for same sex persons who want to live with, love and care for their partner. At any rate, I would like to see more concern about recognizing people who are mentally and emotionally damaged, including our troops who come home from their experiences with PTSD, and getting more help for them. Lives are being lost, literally and figuratively. I guess I'm more concerned about that area than I am about the Chick Fil-A flap. Nonetheless, this was a very thoughtful blog you have posted. ~~Blessings 'n Cheers
I believe that Love is Love and it more important to Love one another than it is to tout giving up chicken or "chikn" sandwiches. May I also state the the "traditional" family of "mommy-daddy-baby" us at less than 40 %. Right now Chik-a-fil-a" --whatever==-- is only approving of less than 40% of the established group of American families!!
Hey kiddo,..thanks for visiting my website!!
@DonnaLou - I am in complete agreement with YOU on what we should be doing for our returning soldiers!! Chik-a-hotenanny is getting too much attention!!
@The_Palantiri - and the SPLC is NOT a hate organization?
They have a leftist political agenda as hateful of any 'conservative' group. They're about as
mainstream as the ACLU.
