I really should have posted this entry over the Memorial Day Weekend. It was my eighth "Xangaversary" and I didn't even pay lip service to eight years on Xanga. (Last year I spread the
"Xangaversary Celebration" over the whole month.) Oh well. Shows how (non) committed I seem to be these days that I haven't even posted more than one PhotoPost concerning my birthday vacation. And the vacation was at the beginning of May! Oh Well (yet again.) I have an excuse for not posting. The "title card" for this entry wasn't finished. That's it, above. I started with a vintage Catalina Island postcard from the 30s, captured from an online search, and then I "inserted" snippets of my own photos inside the letters. I even tweaked the colors to make it look more like hand tinted postcards of old. Pretty neat eh? And the image program I'm STILL using primarily is my old Micrografx Picture Publisher, which they stopped making after Version 10 a few years ago. Oh well (for the 3rd time), here's some random chronological photos taken during my Catalina Island vacation over May 1-3, 2012.
The marine layer was still pretty thick when the Catalina Express catamaran pulled into it's slip in the quaint Catalina Island harbor. A few cable lengths out to sea a Carnival cruise ship was anchored. I hoped the sun would peek out for a day (or perhaps two?) but after some wondrous spring weather the week previous to my vacation, May Gray had crept in with the tide, and the month. I didn't worry however, as I received my bag and began to walk along the harbor up to my hotel.
On island everyone drives golf carts. This modified vehicle was parked in front of my
hotel. Avalon is a very small town, and a lot of the homes are vacation rentals. The season hasn't really "begun" yet, and I took advantage of the Catalina Express' "birthday discount" with a free round trip on the boat, plus 10% off my hotel room. That's an Avalon trolley car in the distance. I walked most everywhere, instead of wasting a couple of bucks on public transportation.
On the first evening I stayed in town, I took my "daily walk" over three miles up into the hills above the town. I'd purchased some new walking shoes at Big Five Sporting Goods before leaving, and even though the road was a little steep, and the weather a bit cool, I felt brave, stowed my camera in my pocket, and began my hike. Here I'm a couple of turns up into the hills. The mist can be seen in the distance. You know you're still in California. There's a palm tree! Catalina looks pretty much as it has since it was first occupied, during the 1920s, specifically as a tourist destination for Angelenos. The most famous "owner" of the island,
William Wrigley Jr. whose family still owns most of the land, found his fortune in chewing gum, and used the draw of having his baseball team, the Chicago Cubs, play Spring training on island.
Still fit and eager for an adventure, 59 years into my corporeal existence. I've only been on Catalina Island two times. The first was with Liz in 2005, and we vowed to return. I took this trip alone, but met and talked to quite a few people. My multiple cameras and knack for searching for "interesting angles" for my photographs makes for a cool icebreaker.
Up into the hills in back of Avalon, I shot the bay. We're looking almost due east in this photo. The sun rises a bit to the right, and sets on the other side of the island. I love a place where you can enjoy both sunrise and sunsets over the water. The first night's sunset wasn't that spectacular. It was about two hours to sundown when I shot this.
The cruise ship is disembarking. I caught some cactus in the foreground, and Avalon is in the distance. It would be nice to retire here, and I talked to a couple of residents who did exactly that. Another gal had lived on Catalina all her life, then had to sell her home and move to Long Beach (on the mainland, roughly 30 miles away) when she contracted cancer, in order to be near medical care. Now she's cancer free, and got her old job back, but is still looking for a place to live. Real estate is tight in this community.
I featured
another version of this shot on my Photoblog right after I returned. This was taken after I crested the hill, and was coming down along the trail on the other side. I liked the composition with the branch on the left side of the photo. I was getting a bit tired (just a bit mind you) and opted to finish my walk back into town instead of go off searching for the sunset, knowing I'd just have to walk back eventually.
Somehow I just don't think photography quite captures the magnificence of the "real thing". Sometimes, as I've mentioned in the past, I deliberately don't bring a camera when visiting some places for the first time, so I'm not concentrating on looking through the lens. (These days it's looking at the small screen in back of the camera, but same thing) but experiencing the actual views. I really enjoyed my first "hike" in the hills around Avalon, and if there had been time (and money) I would have got a pass for hiking in the interior, taken a bus into the wilds of the island, and hiked back.

Right now I can't remember whether this was shot in the evening or the next morning. The marine layer played games with perception concerning the sun, which didn't peek out of the clouds until around noon on my second day on island. It's been almost a month now since I was actually there, and I've sifted through over 1200 photos (which can be viewed
HERE on my Flickr account. ) looking for shots I haven't yet posted here on Xanga in the Photoblog. I followed this seagull around for a bit while he was bathing in the fountain in the center of Harbor Street.

This is the actual view from the (shared) balcony on top of the Hotel St. Lauren. Most of the time I was there, nobody used this space, so I got to feeling as if it were my own. I only got to "sunbathe" for a couple of hours on my third day. (which was sunny and warm, finally) But I did spend my "off time" when not hiking around the island, or taking pictures, lying on a chaise lounge and reading a book. The hotel is situated up the hill a few blocks from the beach, but the view was grand, the staff was helpful, and I got to check in the moment I arrived (at 9am rather than wait till 3pm check in time) and got to stow my bag at the hotel after check out time (11am) till my boat left at 5 later the afternoon I disembarked.
This photo was taken on Casino Way, the walkway which leads along the beach to the Casino building, which is behind me. The blue and white building with a working lighthouse light is the Catalina Yacht Club, and was built in the 20s. Some mist is just touching the top of the lighthouse.

A shot of the window of one of the gift shops on island. Didn't have a lot of funds, so I didn't get any souvenirs, but I did scour the shops and saw some art pieces I would love to own. (Some of the art pieces are quite pricey! But they're one of a kind.) This mirrored mannequin cost a couple thousand dollars, if memory serves.
For the last photo in this series, I display a shot of three parasailers as they rise in the air taken from the back of the boat from which I parasailed about a half hour later. A typical "bucket list" entry I always seem to see on blogs is to jump out of a plane. I'd really love to hang glide or paraglide someday in the near future. One of the parasailing ventures on island offered a $70.00 1200 foot "trip" above the harbor for only 20 bucks on your birthday, and I scheduled mine for the day after my birthday. God and the sun smiled on me for the hour or so during which I parasailed. I'd promised to take my camera with me and shoot some photos from 1200 feet in the air. So did the couple I sailed with. However, once we were in the air, we all decided just to hang on to the parachute, and not make an attempt to fiddle through pockets to find our cameras. I figured we'd be buffeted by winds, but the air was calm and the experience was wonderful. Almost beatific. (I'd gone to Luau Larry's, a local bar where they serve a tropical drink called the "Wiki Waki" late the night before, and was actually a little hung over, but the parasailing experience is a memory I'll forever remember. And I'd really love to actually paraglide, which is when you jump off a cliff with the parachute, and it isn't tethered to a vehicle.
I wasn't able to upload some of the other photos I wanted to portray in this Photopost to Xanga. (I'm still having lots of puter problems, this time with the video card) But this is a long enough post as it is, and there's still plenty of time. (And LOTS more photos!) Although I am itching to go off on another Photopost. Perhaps my blog will just feature photos for the rest of the year!

Getting near your idea weight helps you enjoy hiking. Catalina sort of jinx me. First trip was my birthday (I got splashed and missedmy bithday cruise gift. My honeymoon to Catalina was canceled and the second visit we slept outdoors cause of no rooms for rent.)

Your views of Catalina are very interesting. We leave for our annual trek to downeast Maine in a couple of weeks - the coast and hills of Catalina are very reminiscent of that part of the US - even though they are about as far apart as its possible to get in the continental US.
A difference might be that there are still parts of Coastal and Inland Maine that are "untouristy" - but you have to hunt for them. Our cottage is on a relativly unknown lake - with no easy access - but even our jeep trails have street signs! (They are required by law for fire fighter access)

Hi there would you mmind stating which blog platform you're working with?
I'm looking to start my own blog in the near future but I'm
having a tough time deciding between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal.
The reason I ask is because your layout seems different then most blogs annd I'm looking for something completely unique.
