    "After the Last Love Songs"
    Poetry by Michael F. Nyiri
    © January 4, 1974 9:45 p.m.

Yes, some can turn to everybody else,
    Pretending they're extremely extroverted,
masking all their hopes in return for a date,
    But as I gaze upon
    all the young girls
    With their inward smiles and
locked-up diaries, I find I'm looking for an open
    book-
Not a page on Saturday night,
But a novel to peruse with my existence.
    I will find her someday
But until that time I'll keep trying,
Wistfully writing my last love songs to her
And hoping someday she'll pick one up
    and read

    "Valentune"
    Poetry by Michael F. Nyiri
    © February 3, 1979 3:05 p.m.  (newly transcribed)

Let me sing for you a valentune
In hopes to win your heart
    Erase all past disappointments
And make a brand new start

    Hear me, sweet young angel
    Love so pure and fair
    Let my song enrapture
    As it travels everywhere

    Simple gifts of kindness
    We oft forget, I fear
    And I forgot your kindness
With the path I chose to steer

How sad, in light of memory
That I tried to blight your presence
But even smiles which hurt me
    Express a warm transcendence

    I will sing my valentune
In hopes to win your heart
I wish to be made whole again
No more remain a lonely part

My voice will ring the heavens
My words will wake the world
And I shall not stop singing
    Till love's valentune's fulfilled

    "Chance Encounter"
    Poetry by Michael F. Nyiri
    © February 21, 1979 5:45 p.m. (newly transcribed)

    Will empty waking hours compense
    the evening's satisfaction?
    Can one measure feeling through
    a physical attraction?
Are we interrupting life for small
    But lyrical distractions?
And does the echo far surpass the moment?

Two chance encounters script the pages
    of a passion play
    The separation bars itself behind
    the doors by day
And must I wait for some bright future
    door to open way
Or may I touch you once again tonight?

Comics laugh the tears away but tears drop
    just the same
All the lonely people cry just who
    are we to blame
Poets wish to fall for love but
    do not know her name
And does one kiss ease pressure on the soul?

One chance encounter taught me what
I might have left to give
Two chance encounters prove I have
some more life left to live
And I'm filled with wonder - whence the
    third encounter arrives
And this time will it be
    again by chance?

    "Valentine's Mantra"
    Poetry by Michael F. Nyiri
    © February 9th, 2006 4:50 a.m. pst

Always alone and reflective, silent amongst bliss
I glimpse The Spectre of Lovers standing blowing a kiss
I arise to respond, but my care melts away
And simple serene sadness puts a stamp on my day

The time spent with false hopes races anew
No destitute feelings, as the days turn so blue
No soulmates or lovers appear at the fore
And I never believe that I'll live loving more

Then a year or two passes, finally happiness reigns
I can hold her and love her, my emotion bears gain
Many thanks for her kisses, unadulterated glee
She crawls in my life with unabashed sincerity

I know not if love is a life lived forever
If The Spectre of Lovers leaves emotion to sever
the ties of terrible times taken from living
Or if love begins slowly, impressed with our giving

My love once scattered cleanly and surely away
But twas coddled by circumstance, returning this day
And growing to fullness, with gladness sublime
Exhaling pure feelings, back and forth throughout time

In the past, alone, waiting, but never found love
Looking throughout lifetimes, below and above
But love found me wanting, and kissed softly my cheek
Now I thank her most sweetly, through passionate weeks

The past is a sieve through which memory fades
The pains and the sadness cut clean with time's blades
But the flowers which bud and bloom bright on the vine
Tell me repeatedly now you are my Valentine

BEHIND THE POETRY: It is Valentine's Day , after all, and I've been writing Valentine's Day and love poetry for a long time. Here are a few that have been shown here on the blog before. The illustrations are from my Lovesearch section on my website, where I detail my two year long internet search for love. The image of me as the "white knight" with the horse is one of my earlier composites, and if clicked, brings up the original size. I think it's one of my more impressive pieces. One of the themes in a lot of poems is "after the last love song", a phrase which shows up in roughly a dozen poems. This is only the second to use the phrase, from 1974. I was "only" 21 years old, and I still think this is one of my better efforts. Interesting note. In today's world of computers, the internet and blogs, I doubt if there are a lot of girls whose diaries are "locked up" anymore. I love the word "Valentune" which I'm pretty sure I made up. (This poem on my 2006 entry comes up 5th in a Google search.) The word has shown up in a number of my poems. "Chance Encounter" was written for a neighbor girl I felt I loved back when I was 26. Two times she had "dropped by" and the poem wonders if she does so again, is it by chance, or decreed by kismet? The final poem is last year's (2006) Valentine's Day poem, and appeared here on the blog soon after it was written. Below: The 2008 Valentine's Day poem.

    Another Depressing Valentine's Poem
    Poetry by Michael F. Nyiri
    Valentine's Day, February 14th, 2008, 4:25pm pst

Well here I am alone another Valentine's Day.
I'm sort of glad it's overcast, and clouds are in the way.
For years I hoped and waited for the girl in dreams to come.
I polished up my life and blew my horn and thumped my drum.
She never came around, I don't know why nor understand.
She must exist I tell myself as I extend my hand.

Yes, here it is again, a meal for one, a day for tears.
Another poor sad situation like it's been for years and years.
Are you still out there muse, and are you young and pure
Or are you old like me, and still alone without a cure?
Will we ever meet as fate allows in dreams and books?
Or do we fail to see each other with our glancing looks.

Another day for hearts and flowers don't you know
Another cause for celebration of the love we grow
But since I never knew you and you failed to come to me
I really can't explore a love with just sincerity
And so I sit here, pen in hand, attempt a meager smile
I'll say I'm still awaiting you as I have been all this while.

Well here I am alone another Valentine's Day
I'm sort of glad it's overcast, and clouds are in the way.
I've looked at clouds from both sides now, they are not what they seem
And if you love me as I love, then this must be a dream.
I'll close my eyes, and brave the rain, and blow a gentle kiss
And crawl into my bed alone, as ever come to this.
