A Forgotten Unfinished Drawing of Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany
Above is a photograph (stolen from this page of amazing photos) of possibly my favorite castle. I love collecting photos of castles on my computer. My home is my castle, but nothing like this. I still someday hope to live in one of Southern California's "Fairy Tale" houses.
You know, no matter how many great shots I get around Los Angeles, I really would like to widen my horizons and come driving around the bend to see something as magnificent as this! Seriously, Neuschwanstein Castle, built by "Mad King Ludwig" of Bavaria in the late 1869 is architecture from a dream.
This evening I was looking through some of my old drawing pads. I can still draw, but unlike writing, which I rekindled when I put up my website (and this blog) I never really began drawing again. Most of my drawings were made in the 70s and 80s. I was amazed when I came across this. I began drawing the castle, from this magazine page for a model from the Danbury Mint (which later sold me so many Betty Boop figurines that I used to joke that someday I'd get a ring from the doorbell, and answer the door to see Betty Boop standing there demanding her money!). The magazine page is standard size, about 8.5" x 11".
I began this project in the early 90s, when I was living with Pat, and the piece is ink pen on construction paper. I couldn't remember drawing this at first. I remembered the magazine ad, which I'd pulled from a Playboy or Heavy Metal mag years ago. I had it in one of my notebooks of paraphnalia from my life. (I save a lot of stuff, and it's remarkable that a lot of it is still with me, seeing how I've lived in about 20 or 30 places in my life, sometimes moving on the average of once a year.) I didn't date it.
Here is a detail. Pretty good eh? Almost "photorealistic" a style in which I've dabbled for many years, beginning when I used to draw intricate cityscapes. My drawings were like those "Where's Waldo" drawings, with lots of stuff going on. In school, I drew a lot of architecture. Sadly, I didn't save the stuff I did when I was doing it all the time. Some of my drawings have been featured on this blog before, and I always get a lot of compliments when I show my drawing pads to guests. The few times I've attempted drawing lately, my pinched nerve, which is connected to my left hand, which I use to draw, always acts up, and first I lose the feeling in the hand, and have to stop when the pain starts.
This photo shows the magazine ad, plus the drawing, and also a test drawing I did in pencil. I kept wondering why I didn't finish this, and then when I began to wonder if I should maybe attempt to do so after all these years, I looked at the photo of the model, and then back at my drawing.
I stopped when I realized that I'd placed the first part of the castle too low on the page, and by the time I got to the front of the model, most of it wouldn't be able to be seen. If I do finish, I'd have to add more paper to the bottom (which of course can be done) I'm thinking about it. Seriously. I just don't know if my hand can manage to stay still enough for this much detail anymore. One neat thing to realize. There weren't a lot of computers around when I did this, and I certainly didn't have one. So I couldnt' do any of the tricks people can do now, like upscaling the image go get a better look or to compare angles. This is done "by hand" the way it used to be done before computer art programs. (You can't erase ink. This was pretty slow going, and I do remember doing it now that I've created this blog entry.)

I wish I could draw. Those are amazing, you're really good at it. The castle is wonderful, Germany has the best castles. I too collect pics on my pc, not only of castles but also dragons.

I think it's very nice. Really. You should finish it. I wouldn't worry about where the image will be cropped. It looks to me that if you finish the whole thing - what just easily fits on the paper - you'll have a nice image worth framing. It doesn't matter that you can't use all of your source image. When I use source images for my work, I modify the heck out of it! That's part of where the art lies. A lot of the interest in this piece is in the way it'll be cropped when it's done. Glad you posted it! Post it again when you're done I don't know how good your digital camera is, but I bet if it's photographed correctly you could make nice prints of the finished product.

Dear Mike; we know that ink is not a forgiving medium. A mistake and everything is spoiled. So, you rendered very well the details realistically. It also takes patience to draw all these fine details and a good eye. It is a very nice drawing; too bad about your hand. I did some ink myself this morning. It is a picture of a women with a cat and some kind of flowers.....
I have a son who can do this sort of thing, perfect detail and scale. Freaks me out. YES, do more art!
