  • I'm GooGoo Over Gaga

    lady-gaga

    The Lady is Genuine

The Song 2-13-11 The Record 5-23-11 (From Lady Gaga's Twitter feed on 1-01-11)

Stephani Joanne Angelina Germanotta is releasing her sophomore effort officially on May 23rd. The "album" (I still call them that) is called "Born This Way". The single from the album will be released on February 13th. You can find "snippets" of the song all over YouTube

I first heard (the now ubiquitous) Lady Gaga in late 2009. It was the song "Paparazzi" and I liked it enough that I investigated the artist. (I thought she was singing "Barbara Rossi" at first listen.) By the time the video for "Telephone" was released early this year, I was possibly Gaga's oldest "little monster" (the term she uses to describe her fans.) Although the dance pop I heard at first seemed at first listen quite disposable (or did until some of the songs became "monster" hits), I was taken especially with the videos I watched on her official YouTube channel. I subscribed immediately. One Friday evening I spent a couple of hours watching all the videos I could find. (The official vids, not the thousands of knockoffs on other YouTube sites.) "Beautiful, Dirty, Rich" made me smile. "Paparazzi" is an epic minimovie. She made no contest about the fact that she has many influences, and those influences are highly audible and visible in the vids. Her sense of humor is wonderfully evident. I called her the love child of Madonna and Mark Mothersbaugh of Devo. The videos really caught my eye. However, it was the singing in the vid for "Eh Eh (There's Nothing Else I Can Say") which caught my ear.

A lot of "old fogeys" my age are content with relistening to their musical past (I still have over 1000 vinyl records in my music collection) I will freely admit that I don't "collect" music anymore. But thanks to the internet, and specifically "internet radio stations" like Pandora, which I have fed into my living room entertainment center over wifi, I keep up with most of what's "happening" even though I might not care for much or it, or think that other musical artists have covered a lot of the same ground with better results in the past. I don't watch American Idol. The last CDs I purchased in earnest were in the late 90s. There's been a whole decade of music since then. I loved discovering Napster in the early aughts. A big section of my music collection has always been what I somewhat possibly chauvinistically call "chick singers". MP3 files of Christina Aquilera and Britney Spears started to appear in the music folder on my hard drive.

I always collected the "artist" and not individual songs. I thought I would be dismissing Lady Gaga as a dance pop diva, but I didn't actually buy the "Fame/Fame Monster" double album CD (which incorporated all the released material from her first record and the followup EP.) until May of 2010.

While the dance tunes are quite catchy, I wanted to hear more songs like "Speechless" and "Brown Eyes" where the listener can actually hear the Lady's beautiful voice, unhampered by electronic flourishes.

In the meantime, Lady Gaga has become quite a phenomenon. She is everywhere. And she's pissing people off with her New York attitude and approach to celebrity. Frankly, I like the NY connection, and the fact that she didn't start out on the Disney channel, but on the NY club circuit. Her behavior at Mets games and "in your face" comic fashion sense (like wearing a dress made of raw meat at the MTV Music Video awards show.) has made her almost as many enemies as fans, and she sort of instills a "love me or hate me" vibe when reading internet comments about her exploits. However, it's the music I love, and I think she's a breath of fresh air in an otherwise cut and paste cultural world.

Here is a sample of Lady Gaga, singing "You and I", a new song live. I don't know for sure yet, but certainly hope this is on the new record. I'm sure I'll be one of the first (and probably the first of my age) to get "Born This Way" when it's released. Not too long ago I was talking to somebody who was visiting me at my place, and she made the comment that she thought Lady Gaga was a male, something she'd heard in idle conversation. There was some talk and internet discourse earlier in her careed concerning whether or not the Lady was indeed a lady, or a transgender artist (which Gaga lampoons herself in the longer version of the "Telephone" video) cear_lady_gaga_01_hThe truth is that Gaga is a spokesperson for the gay, lesbian and transgender community, but she's all girl.

Besides her singing, which is displayed wonderfully not only above, but on the many clips online from her appearances on the Ellen DeGeneres show, which championed her early on, Lady Gaga is a classically trained pianist. She has musical chops. She's not a flash in the pan. She's the real deal, and I'm proud to be an older, bald, little monster. I haven't really gushed over any one in pop music since Gwen Stefani in the early 90s. My musical muses are all getting long in the tooth. The last time I saw Carlene Carter, she was overweight and unrecognizable.

I'm really excited about the new Lady Gaga album. I'm glad I can still get excited about new music, and I have this wonderful new force to thank for it. Thank you Stephani. I'm glad you were Born This Way.

Required Reading: 1. Growing Up Gaga. A FANTASTIC in depth article (with lots of photos) from NY Magazine writer Vanessa Grigoriados. 2. The Lady's Wikipedia entry. 3. Last Photo is from 2007 in an article from W magazine.

EDIT: 7:15 p.m. I wrote this entry this morning before going to work. After work, I typed "Lady Gaga New Music 2011" into the YouTube search bar. A lot of the music from the new CD is on YouTube, which makes sense in the music world of today. On first listen, much of it sounds like disposable dance pop. In a comment, Emily (BoureeMusique) stated "Her voice is only "good" or "pretty good," but she knows how to use the best of it." I'd elaborate by saying she doesn't have an incredible range, but since she writes her own music, she doesn't have to. Personally, I'm in love with her voice when you can hear it. I wish she'd sing more ballads, and bluesy pieces. Some commenters simply don't like her, and I'll admit, if you don't like most of the "type" of dance music she sings (cast thee out, autotune) then possibly she isn't for you....right now in this really early stage of her career. You'll have to evacuate the dance floor for now. I predict she will blossom and extend her repetoire, and she will last, like Streisand, (who does have an incredible range, but is ancient history for anybody not born during the baby boom) or Cher (who handed her an MTV award.). BTW, back in her day, Cher's Bob Mackie designed wardrobe was pretty outlandish. I was one of the very few of my assembled group of friends who embraced Madonna in the 80s, a decade which she owned as far as pop stardom is concerned. (The joke in the admonition to "evacuate the dance floor" will fly over the heads of a lot of older readers, perhaps. When Cascada released the song in 2009, it was immediately compared to Lady Gaga.) MFN/ppf

  • I just downloaded the first Tony Rice and Norman Blake album off of iTunes entitled simply, "Blake and Rice." I've been enjoying it very much. I'm just not a Gaga fan. What can I say?

Hows things going for you, Mike? It has been a while.

  • I think that's the most extensive tribute post that gaga has ever gotten.  Someone ought to bring it to her attention1 haw haw.

@flatpick46 - me neither but I do love blake and rice.  Hey man, I'm singing 4 songs over there on Diva_Jyoti's blog if you want to stop by.  Fellow musicians and all that, I'll stop by and see you too.

  • I didn't watch this video yet, and I haven't heard any of her brand new stuff, but I, too, have loved Gaga since Papparazzi. I think "Bad Romance" is the only song I didn't love immediately, and now I am a big fan of that as well. She's a smart, if a little crazy, woman. She knows her music. Her voice is only "good" or "pretty good," but she knows how to use the best of it. She can write and play very well. I'd say she's more a mix of Madonna and Marilyn Manson half the time, but I admire her spunk either way. I read an interview a few months ago about her hanging out in Amsterdam and doing the club scene there (partying, not playing). She's just so fun and honest, smart and vulnerable, insanely successful. Two thumbs up for her and for your homage.

  • I'm not a gaga fan, but everyone has their own tastes right?

  • It's good to see you back and posting. I did not think much of Lady Gaga until I saw  her perform on a C&W Show. She's much better than I expected. However, as much as I like C&W, I prefer those artists who are or have been based in TX. We've got some really good singer/songwriters locally & especially in Austin. Otherwise, as you know, my main interest and repertoire includes Celtic songs and derivatives.  ~~Blessings 'n cheers

  • She's a pretty talented musician, period.

  • Dear Michael,

You know...I never liked her until you said something about likeing some of her music.  It was your face I kept picturing when I heard a Gaga song.  I always giggle and then my day gets better if I'm having a bad day.

I have missed you being on Xanga.  Ok...maybe more your comments.  You always brighten my day!

    Ann

  • @Roadlesstaken - and smokin' hott. There's that too

  • i'm definitely more of a fan of gaga's songs like brown eyes, again again, and ESPECIALLY  speechless, and i like the new song you posted. i'm a little excited for her new album, especially if there are more songs like these. <3

  • Hi Mike,

I literally laughed out loud when I read, "older, bald little monster."  You are too much.  :)

I really liked her from the beginning and I do prefer to see her without hair dye and tons of makeup.  She is a naturally beautiful brunette.  Of course, I realize her persona is what has made her so famous.

I love the fact that you stay current with "today's" music.

  • Haha even my 5 years old niece would request Gaga's song to play on my lappie whenever she's around at home. She's a genius, alright. And earning big bucks now.

  • @flatpick46 - Dear Randy, I hope you at least listened to a few minutes of the song I selected, which isn't the usual "dance pop" with which Lady Gaga is usually associated. You're a guitarist, specializing in traditional tunes, so I'm certainly not surprised you're a fan of Blake and Rice. I'm doing fine. I'm healthier than I have been in years. I keep myself busy, although I haven't been too creative of late, and I'm into the third year of my latest five year plan, to be completely debt free by the time I'm 60 (in May of 2013)

@New_dog - Dear Dog, I've always loved to dance, and the Lady established herself with dance music. After I had my "hip revision" operation (to repair a broken 16 year old hip replacement prosthesis) in 2009, I recorded "Iko Iko" to showcase some of my moves post operation. It's over a year later, and I've been planning a dance vid set to Gaga's music. Maybe it'll be a YouTube sensation, and she'll find out about my obsession with her.

@BoureeMusique - Dear Emily, I mentioned the line in your comment about her voice being "good, or pretty good" in my EDIT. Since she's a musician, and not merely a singer, she doesn't have to have the range of Mariah Carey or Barbra Streisand. She writes her own music. Her "unplugged" version of Bad Romance is wonderful.

@DonnaLou - Dear Donna, I never really am going to admit to "being back and posting", although this began as just a "random tweet" and turned into a full blown biographical tribute, with bibliographical links and glossy images. I've always entreated readers to treat my blog like a magazine, and the entries are the articles. After over 10 years online (Almost 8 of them here on Xanga) I've pretty much said everything I want to, and don't really like to repeat myself. I can understand your dedication to Austin. My late friend Tom, who died in 1987, and I always wanted to make a journey to one of Willie's 4th of July picnics. I understand the city has named a street after him, with a statue!

@hesacontradiction - Dear Ann, Just this morning, I was thinking about you. I do enjoy corresponding. I always enjoy getting feedback on a blog article. I don't make the time to go around visiting blogs all that much anymore. I just got an email from an old Xanga friend from 2005 the other day. I am always available for an internet "conversation" through letters, even if I'm not that active on Xanga. My longtime email address is michaelfnyiri@gmail.com. That said, you are one of the few Xangans I will visit just to check up on you, from time to time, even though you tend to privatize a lot of your posts. (a pet peeve of mine, since I like stuff posted online to stay there, like all my stuff over the past 10 years)

@dude_this_world_sux - Dear Janee, If the first CD and EP are any indication, there will be about 3 ballads or "slow songs", including "You and I". When an artist generates as many hits as Gaga has with her first effort, it's assumed that the sophomore effort will not measure up, and a lot of artists fail with their 2nd record. From what I've heard online, I don't think the Lady will disappoint we little monsters.

@gottobereal64 - Dear Gretchen, You can't help but notice that even back in 2007, Stephani is flashing her bra. I believe she was performing in bikini underwear back in her club days. Another striking Italianamerican brunette singer who bleached her hair blonde is of course Madonna. Frankly, I've always liked darker hair, but it's been said somewhere that blondes have more fun.

  • @baldmike2004 - Well, drop by my "den" once in awhile, even if you're not posting yerself. I'm on at least once or twice a week, and I'm checking my subs as often as possible. RYC to Randy. I think that's a great goal. I hope to accomplish it m'self in a few years from now. Good to know you're feeling well, too.

  • The music transition from cds and tapes to mp3 files has messed me up.  I finally got everything in mp3 form and then goofed up my computer.  I like lady gaga but haven't bought any music in a really long time just listening to the regular radio stations around town an only for my drive to work.  I really need to get a pandora account (i'm pretty sure it's free).  my mood might improve if i get back into music.  i use to love all kinds and now only on myd rive to work.

  • Hey, Mike! My life has been super busy the past 3 weeks! Things have NOT settled down since the holidays, not one bit. I was so surprised to see you posted...I haven't seen you in awhile. I knew you were Xanga breaking and braking a bit.

I watched and listened to Gaga talk and sing. I am intrigued by her. I am listening more with an open mind and heart. I try not to get stuck in my '70's music. I try to listen to new artists.

Hey, I need to find some Gaga undies and add you to my current post! I didn't even realize you were around this week. When I get on later tonight I will find you some undies! Or maybe leave you commando. ??
    HUGS!

  • Lady Gaga.  I think she's doing awesome.  She completely knows how to take the fame and run with it because it won't last forever.  Not this big anyway.  her. My fav song of hers is Bad Romance.

  • Hi Mike,

I'm a pretty proud little monster. I appreciate people who can put on an excellent show, and Lady Gaga does just that. She's a performer, and that's obvious in every move she makes. Gotta love someone who can understand why my houndstooth blazer was my first day of class go-to my entire college career. Thanks for this post. It's nice to see someone write a mature and thoughtful post on her music--which is currently turned up as loud as I can make it go.

  • @opticalnoise - Khai, Been planning a dance video containing her music (HERE's one from 20 years ago with music from the 40s) for a long time. I almost had a mashup created with music from the Fame, and The Fame Monster. But now I've got to include songs from Born This Way like Judas, Marry the Night, Born This Way, Road to Love (and my absolute favorite, after "You and I', Government Hooker. I've been a dancer all my life, and this is possibly why I had to have a hip replacement in my 40s. (I did the splitz in my youth as part of the show.) It's going to be a "monster" video, and will maybe even go viral. I've got to lose some weight, so I can do justice to the spandex bike pants I'm gonna be wearing. (In homage to the male dancers in the Fame Montster tour.) Stay tuned.  MFN/ppf

  • @baldmike2004 - Dear Mike,

PLEASE link me the minute that gets posted. That sounds fab!

    Khai

  • Ahh, I love that an older person embraces her music as well, and actually knows what an mp3 is ;) . Very intelligent and eloquent post about my favorite performer.
