A Parody Entry for the Xanga's Got Talent Contest!

Attention: This is a parody entry for the Xanga's Got Talent Contest, a real contest, which can be entered HERE, and hosted by a Xangan I do know, Beth (thegirlwiththecamera) Now, the last time I wrote a parody entry for a contest (HERE), I probably could have gotten enough votes to at least place or show in the real contest, but I didn't enter, because I don't participate in Xanga contests, plain and simple. I'm not talented nor beautiful, nor more important than anybody who blogs here, and I never liked popularity contests back in school. I was pretty popular, but that's beside the point!

I thought Beth had already had this contest, back when I was on hiatus. Shes' such a sweet gal, and is having some problems out there in that website we call "life", so I was really sad to read her entry proclaiming:

"Last time I tried, it failed miserably. Last time I advertised this, I had more then enough people say they would participate, then I had only 3 entries when it came down to the deadline, which I had extended multiple times, to ensure having enough contestants.

So, I'm going to give it another shot:"

That's the kind of gumption I like. Get knocked down, get right up again, and come out swinging...er...I mean, get right on the horse...er....start the contest all over again. Beth wrote me a message asking me to promote her contest on my blog. Now I don't usually "promote" anything. I make sure that no pesky ads ever show up around here. But Beth is a good friend, and she deserves a shot at making Xanga History with the VERY FIRST XANGA TALENT CONTEST! I told her I already had some entries planned, and I'd probably get around to her next week, but then I remembered I'd been listening to some old audio cassette tapes the other day, and there's one I wanted to post on my blog. It's a parody of a country and western song. I don't sing it (thank the Lord, you're saying.) I sort of "narrate" the song, or "speak" over a music track. Usually I credit the music. This was a record, and not original, but I did it so long ago (1988) and didn't write it down, so I don't know who's playing the music. I just wanted something to back the "song" parody, which sort of crams every theme known to country and western music into one song.

Now before we hear the song. (Which is contained in my VERY FIRST AUDIO FILE below, I want to state why this is a parody entry, and why it can't even be entered in the contest. I'd ask you to "vote for me" (even though I don't do such things like asking people to vote for me) but this entry isn't "legal". I didn't read the rules (shucks) prior to beginning to create this entry, which so far has taken about two hours!

SO, Xanga, if you show up, and I don't even know that you will, please follow the links above, and give Beth's little contest a shot. From what I understand, she isn't even getting any entrants, so there isn't anybody to vote for yet. I told her I'd participate, but as I mention, she has RULES, which I am not following, so I'm disqualified right out of the gate.  (Sorry, Beth, but I didn't write the dang rules!)

The rules I'm breaking are: 1. You're supposed to make videos. Even though I think I make some of the best videos on Xanga, this isn't a video. It's a spoken word song parody and is an audio file. (A .wav, for those of you geeks out there.) 3. The video must be recorded especially for the contest! Who knew? I guess I could "cheat" and say I recorded the audio especially for the contest from the original audio tape, which is what I did, and this is the first time anyone has ever heard it, so it's new to you, but I recorded this long before there was a Xanga, or a World Wide Web, for that matter. (There was an internet in 1988, but is was text based, and I don't think HTML had been invented, again , for the geeks out there.) 4. The videos should be less than a minute. Again, this is an audio clip, and it's over 2 minutes.

You know, I really don't understand some of the rules, but I posted a link to the entry, so you can go over there and read them yourselves.

SIGN UP, XANGANS. YOU HAVE TALENTS. I'VE SEEN AND HEARD SOME.

Perhaps I'll even "tag" some of you talented Xangans out there. Strut your stuff. Sign up. Enter the contest.

Okay, enough of this advertising. On with the show. Hope you enjoy this, and tell your friends. I'm going to tag a few folks whom I think might enjoy this little performance, so if you came over here and said "What the hey did he tag ME for, just listen below. If you were voting, I don't even know where you are supposed to, and I don't think poor Beth has any contestants yet. So don't vote here, just enjoy, and then hopefully you'll have someone to vote for when PEOPLE ENTER THE TALENT SHOW. Me, I've always said I have no talent, but I'm damn creative!

  • That was brilliant! I enjoyed this soooo much!

  • I want to steal your hat.

  • @XndraXstz - Sandra, we were on each other's sites at the same time. Kismet perhaps?

  • That is funny and it does sound like what they play on Country radio stations. You should check out Hank III for his Outlaw Country and Unknown Hinson for his comedy songs.

  • haha Mike, luved your country parody, and i've enjoyed watching your humour come forth on xa.  It was kind of eerie hearing your recored voice from over 20 years ago coming down the inter tubes of the present.  That music sounded familiar, if i think of it, i'll be back to check comments to see if anyone knows what tune is it.

  • LOL, that was great!!

  • All major religious traditions carry basically the same message, that is love, compassion and forgiveness the important thing is they should be part of our daily lives.
    Dalai Lama

  • hahaha!  That was classic!

  • What is the backround music from? And where do I get one of those cool Buddy Holly buttons?

  • Wow, you're just too awesome, don't you know? The song was awesome! Though I don't need to hear anyone else..because you won in my mind lol; too bad you can't enter because you would win this contest.

  • Well, my most awesome gift is training horses~ my kids could video that for you.  LOL~ or not.

  • Yes, you are creative~ and I think we need a post based on all those hat pins!

  • that is something! lol my talent is photos I guess not singing

  • hey!  Stop giving country music a bad name!!!

    I did REALLY need a laugh though...thanks!

  • LOL that is GREAT! Sounds like a pretty typical country song.

"all my beer went flat" hahaha.

  • LOL -- great parody, Mike!

  • This had to be fun to do!

  • Well Mike that just might be the best country song ever written.  It had all of the myriad of tragedies that plague almost every country and western singer of the 70's.  All you need is a nice suite that lights up with lots of glitter and flashing lights, a woman with big teased up hair next to you (barefoot and pregnant by the way), and a very large gas guzzling caddie to ride around in.  You got it made.   I promise to buy your first record.  LOL

    Hugs

  • @llibra - Dear Linda, It shouldn't seem weird to hear me from years ago. Heck, we still enjoy hearing Elvis and he died over 30 years ago! I remember the music is on one of my vinyl records. Perhaps one of my Nashville history collections. I was hoping someone would recognize it. The "Komedy Komedy Komedy" section of my website is one section I never updated. I was writing standup routines and writing magazine parodies in my teens. However I never exercised that part of me on Xanga before. (except in comments on Drakonskyr's blog) It's bringing a whole life of creativity back, after nearly 6 months of stagnation.

@flatpick46 - Dear Randy, I mention in the entry that I wish I could remember the music. I was hoping one of my readers would recognize it. My buttons are years, perhaps even decades old. I wore that hat in the late 70s when I went "clubbing".

@Hinase - Dear Michelle. I feel bad for my friend Beth. I even tagged some talented folks, but they haven't shown up yet. Stay tuned for two more "performances" from me. A parody song called "15 comment man" I've been planning forever, and a dance video set to a Lady Gaga mashup.

@WildWomanOfTheWest - Dear Tamy, I've blogged about my club days before. I wore the "button hat" and a red suede jacket completely covered in buttons and pins. My late friend Tom, over six feet tall and over 300 pounds, dressed to the nines and had a 15 gallon hat (as opposed to a 10). We both wore fancy boots and large turquoise belt buckles, and were "known" on Sunset and Hollywood Blvds back in the late 70s when we'd go out to see our favorite rockabilly bands. Tom was tall, and I'm pretty short. We made a cute couple. Those were the days!

@Diva_Jyoti - Dear Allison, I know you're joking. My mother sang with Ernie Tubb, and we listened exclusively to country music when I was growing up. I can still yodel "Lovesick Blues" just like Hank Williams! (when I'm "in voice" which is seldom.) At the time I made this tape, there was a pretty popular country parody by "Outlaw Country" artist David Allen Coe, called "You never even called my by my name" (written by Steve Goodman) It includes a verse which mentions "trucks, prison, mama, etc." This was sort of an 'answer song'.

@Betrayed1959 - Dear Kat, You don't know how wonderful I feel to have reconnected with you. I swear, if I had known it would have been so easy, I would have "left a comment" sooner.  I had the "gas guzzling Caddy" a 1966 Sedan de Ville. My ex girlfriend (who cheated on me, to keep with the country themes here) made me sell it! I also had a motorcycle, which I called my "horse".

  • @baldmike2004 - Wow, really? A mash-up to Lady Gaga? That's going to be very funny and entertaining lol Ooh, you better put that up soon!

  • I'm not sure which is more epic, the song or the button-hat :D

  • RYC: No, we are not friends. But I've visited several times. You have always came and visited each time though. :) And now i totally understand how you got such a good voice. ;)

Great parody. :D Someone said this was country? o.o kinda seems a mix of country and blues to me. more blues.

  • Absolutely fabulous.

@WildWomanOfTheWest - Oh come on... -I'd- like to see that (:

  • @baldmike2004 - Haha... what a coincidence!

  • What great fun to start a Saturday morning.  I really think this challenges the song that came out years ago "The 'Perfect' Country Song"  You really should send it in to one of the stations.  I am sure it would be requested over and over again.

Is this the hat you wrote about...I think it was you....that you have rescued it from the trash over and over again ?   There is nothing in the world that is more valuable than a hat with character :? )

  • @mommachatter - Dear Mom, (That wasn't my hat.Mine have never been "trashed") I went bald at age 27, and I've been wearing hats for years. (another future blog entry right there.) I keep them all on shelves and hatracks in my house. I have caps, a fedora, a russian felt hat, a Nepalese hat, my "driving caps", including my present "captain's cap", straw hats, and cowboy hats. The "button hat" is kept as it was in the 70s when I used it every weekend while clubbing. I occasionally remove the pins and clean it. I used to have a Mexican Stetson, with a little tassel at the back, but I think I lost it in one of my many moves. (Unless it's around here somewhere.) I have one cap with dozens of little "Winternationals" and "World Finals" pins from when I was a drag racing aficianado back in the 80s. I wore a helmet when I was a motorcyclist, but in one of my drawers are my motorcycle pins which I used to have attached to my leather jacket.

  • I finally got my computer speakers fixed, so... oh my....that reminded me of home.

  • Michael, I don't like contests either. Also, right now,  I don't have time to get involved in any as a participant or otherwise. Got too many "projects" going right now. Not gonna enumerate them.

However, I DO love parodies. I write some m'self or at least borrow a tune for some lyrics I write. I love your "Country Parody" and also the hats!

I'm a bit behind on reading posts. I think you've got another after this one which I'll get to anon.

    ~~Blessings 'n Cheers

  • @mommachatter - Did you say the character with the hat?

Mike you are so very funny. Loved the song and that hat is really something.

  • Mike, this is great! Also, thanks for the advertising, though I may be holding off for awhile. And breaking a few rules is okay - as long as it's not too drastic! And which rules didn't you understand? Haha...just curious! If and when the times comes, I'll allow this to be an entry! I approve, and I'm sure I'll be making lots of exceptions to the rules!

  • haw haw!  My talent is surviving in the wilderness.  It doesn't transfer to a blog, I guess.

    Your song is funny.

    I like country music.

  • @New_dog - Dog, I was raised on country music and this was written  (in 1988) as a sort of answer song to a David Allen Coe song. (Read my "reply" in the string above to "Diva Jyoti" for more details.) I guess one could have a wifi connection in the wilderness, and then you could blog from there. (some netbooks even have cameras!)
