  • Uncle Mike Story: 20 year anniversary edition

    From the MikeVideo Archives:

"The Uncle Mike Story (Part 1)" from 1989

As most of you know, I've been creating my MikeVideo movies for over 20 years. I display almost 60 videos online on my Xanga Video section, my YouTube Channel, on Vimeo, and on the MikeVideo Website. Over this past weekend, I watched my old "The Uncle Mike Story" video, from 1989, and decided to upload it in sections to the internet. This video was made only 3 years after I got my first videocamera, and the tape I have is a 2nd generation dupe. I made the vid for my then 12 year old niece and she has the original, which was edited on two VHS and two Beta tape machines 20 years ago.

I'll write a DIRECTOR'S COMMENTARY sometime in the near future, but I'm excited about being able to present this on Xanga, YouTube, and Facebook. I won't write a novel sized commentary right now. This chapter is 13 minutes and 39 seconds long, so it will take up a little of your time. PART 1 (embedded above) covers the years from 1953-1964, when I entered 6th grade. You will see my "baby pictures" and lots of snapshots of my siblings and myself from the 50s and 60s, heretofore never shown online. The narration is original, recorded in 1989. The music track consists of hit songs from the years chronicled in the video. For now, YouTube has not deleted the soundtrack for "copyright infringement".

This is my "Christmas Present" to my readers and Xanga friends.

If you would like to see more now, here are links to PART 2 (1965-1969), PART 3 (1970-1976), and PART 4 (1977-1986) on YouTube. Next weekend I intend to upload the rest.

  • loved it brother Mike. We didn't start the fire it was always burning .....Billy Joel

  • Heh!  Loved what I saw,..Sir Michael!!  I wish it could have been CAPTIONED so that I could have known what youi were saying!!:goodjob:

  • At school right now, but I'll have to watch this video later.

  • hi, I stopped by but my settings are messed up on all my computers so I am not getting videos right now. bummer!  eventually I'll see these, in the mean time will look forward to more of your printed words  :fun:

  • yo mike awesome video.  i really like the music too!

  • I've said it before, and I need to say it again. You're under-rated on this site. It's a shame you don't get Featured more often; you've got one hell of a sense of humour. This video was great, and I'll be watching the others. I loved the audio volume shifts, and pithy comments about your mother.

    This is classic.

  • @Schristian - Dear Scott, Whenever I put up a new page on AllThingsMike, I add "comments" which I never get. I've toyed with the idea of just featuring a blog on the front page of my site like I used to "pre Xanga" but if I did, I wouldn't get ANY comments. I'll never be "xangafamous" and sometimes I don't understand why some of my best entries seem to stagnante. However other entries are immensely popular, and of any social networking site I've ever joined, I get the most satisfaction here. I made this video long before computers made it easy. There are points where you can hear the audio cassette deck being turned on and off by the microphone I was using to read the narration. Ah, those were the days! In the final few minutes of the tape (which is not digitized yet) I apologize to my niece for the amateurish quality and say that if I waited for the technology to catch up with me, (or were able to afford the pro gear at the time) I wouldn't finish the video until she reached her 30s.

  • @baldmike2004 - HAHAHA! Oh yeah, I know what you mean. I'm still sitting on about 4-6 videos I have to edit for audio/video syncing and quality.

Again, it's a shame that the only times you get featured are when you meta-blog about Xanga. It just shows how self-absorbed this site can be. I might become a little more active on here (I'm feeling that muse slowly returning to me), but rest assured I will try to advertise you like crazy. I may not always comment, but that's because trying to respond to your verbose, and utterly eloquent entries is like trying to propose a new sonnet to Shakespeare. It's a bit daunting sometimes.

And I mean that as complimentary as possible :)

  • Uncle Mike is darn talented.

  • I am amazed that you have the time to do all that in such a meticulous way. I could never do that.

  • Ah that video looks interesting. I'll have to check it out later when I have more time. Here's a mini while I'm here though to thank you for your vote in the commercial contest!

  • strangely interesting Mike.  i wonder what your neice thinks of it, then and now.

  • Dear Mike,
Very cool you were able to do all of this then. It seems you should have sought out a career in tv or film on some level. I can relate to the history and the music.
    peace,
    Jane

  • Very clever and amusing - I enjoyed watching - I expect you have to sit on your hands to keep from re-editing

  • hoping to catch this on my other computer later today, if I can pry it loose from the gamers.

  • Uncle Mike, this is amazing! I'm glad I finally got a chance to watch it! It is funny to think about the differences between making videos now and then. Very well done!

  • RYC: I couldn't agree with you more. Then again, I've asked my family to perform a viking funeral for me when I pass, with a party to follow. And was quite serious about it.

I didn't find Dan's entry in poor taste, because I'm well familiar with his style of writing, and sense of humour (see: My Facebook group on Dead Baby Jokes); however, I also recognised it as his way of saying he didn't believe it to be true. Now, I think Dan should remove the post out of respect for John and his family.

There's a fine line between causing silly scuffles, and mocking someone's legitimate death.

  • It's kind of neat to see the world at a different time.  Thanks.  You notice kids are usually photogenic in their younger years?  The wonder of innocence and not being bridled by superficial grown up concerns.

  • Love the music.

  • Loved seeing all the old photos! Looking forward to seeing Part 2 tomorrow!

  • Grewat video Mike.  I agree with Jilly Carmal.  We didn't start the fire it was already burning.

  • :goodjob:  awesome trip down memory lane Mike...very creative...loved it...thanks for sharing!

  • I love your deadpan commentary. Hilarious! And your memories of your Mum, well, they're totally priceless "Stop your rough-housing or I'm going to beat the living daylights out of you!" - Classic  .

The only criticism I have is that now I've enjoyed the first 4 installments, I want more! When can we expect the next batch?

  • @RuftyRoo - Dear Mel, Actually, I was going to work on digitizing the rest this weekend, then one of my entries got "featured" and I got to "Xangaing" and returning comments for most of Saturday. I will probably do some of it over the holiday. Thanks for watching all four. You're only the second to do so! (That I know about anyway) Thank you so much for your missive on my poetry entry. I do believe it's longer than some comments of mine! And HERE is my "Hospital Hotel Itinerary" blog which you might enjoy. I spent the day today at the movies, "experiencing" James Cameron's "Avatar". I loved "Titanic" and he's outdone himself with this one. Then got home to hear that one of my favorite actresses, Brittany Murphy, is dead, at only 32! Thanks again for your comments and support.

  • Dang....I was just getting into this, but YouTube deleted your 4th video!  This was facinating to say the least.  A genius move on your part to do this as some of us are visual learners.  I only wish I had baby pictures to do mine, but the psychotic step mother burned them.

  • @hesacontradiction - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kfV1VMThmvM

I'm still getting it. This should work. Let me know. For #4. MFN/ppf

  • @baldmike2004 - Nope. This video contains content from UMG and INgrooves, one or more of whom have blocked it in your country on copyright grounds.   This is what I get.
