Featured Grownups: "I'm the one who writes."
I am the One Who Writes......
This is an entry written for the Featured Grownups blogring and blogsite. The subject this time out is "I am the one who...." and was inspired by a blog entry by member Old Hat titled "I'm that guy". FG's instructions for the post are : "...we have a good many new people frequenting Featured_Grownups, so perhaps we should take a moment to get to know one another. Yes? In the spirit of getting to know one another then, the second topic for March is "I am the One Who..." More entries can be found linked from the Featured Grownups blogsite HERE.I am the one who is more than the sum of my parts.
I am the one who writes.
Today, it's a Xanga "introductory post" about "who I am". Last night it was coincidentally an "introductory post" about why I started another website for my new Facebook account. Tomorrow it might actually be a story or a poem. But it will be realized in my mind, tapped out on my keyboard keys, filed into the ether, and exist as the written word, for all the world to see. And thanks to the fact that for the most part I "write" for the internet, pretty much all the world can see (if they want to.)
I read (mainly on blogs here on Xanga and thereabouts) that people who write are sometimes blocked. Sometimes they can't think of anything to say. I never seem to have that problem. I can slip into "writer's mode" very easily, and I've had confirmation (in the form of comments and emails) that even the most slipshod and hasty pieces I write usually have meaning and foster the force of good will. This makes me happy, and serves to fuel the fires of my writing.
I've been writing for many years. I've written novels, short stories, innumerable poems, essays, memoirs, letters, notes, biographies, movie reviews, recipes, prayers, and promises. Physical notebooks gave way to notepad files on my computer, but the written words are still there. They might not be on physical paper anymore, but they're my words, and they exist. Hopefully these words will even exist after I pass from the worldly plane. I've written many times that our cyber selves could conceivably "live" on for perpetuity.
While looking over my saved "history" of words in my notebooks from high school, college, and beyond recently, I found some words I at first didn't remember writing. But soon the gentle wash of memory caused those words to live with a new vigor. I found a poem I must have written as a mere child. The piece was written on somewhat stained translucent tracing paper. The words were scrawled in pencil, in differeing heights. The poem didn't rhyme, nor did it have much rhythm. I could see through to the sentiment, however, and though I might not remember the exact time or place from which I penned the words, I knew they were mine, and I smiled at them.
I write so much I sometimes repeat myself. I've been told my life has been "interesting", and throughout this life, I've attempted to chronicle as much as possible while I'm living it. Sometimes the stories intertwine and overlap, and because I write a blog, I will modify or rewrite passages or sections of other pieces in order to make a current point, or illustrate an opinion or bring forth a nostalgic glow. Sometimes this bothers me, but it rarely bothers my readers. Since most of my readers are other bloggers who read lots of blogs, sometimes it's good that a little bit is repeated every now and then, or else people are apt to forget. The best blog writers can inject information they've written before into new blog entries without seeming to repeat themselves. I would hope that by now I'm the one who writes well enough that my writing doesn't bother anyone reading it.
I'm the one who takes pictures.
Lately, I've been photographing my new mobile home, and the decorations and curios I've been arranging inside the place. Last year, I was taking photos while hiking into the Hollywood hills. Tomorrow I might be photographing murals on the sides of businesses in East Los Angeles. But no matter what I'm taking pictures of, my subjects are always interestingly framed, usually from the floor or the ground, and I have been told I have an 'eye' for photography. I always have my digital memory cards ready for any new image I see with this photographer's 'eye'.
I've always owned cameras. My first was a simple inexpensive Kodak, and mainly I took snapshots when I went on trips. Now it's decades later, and I have two digital still cameras and two digital videocameras. The first photos were physically stored in albums, either slipped into plastic sleeves or attached to the page with black sticky photo corners.
I still can look at the first photo I took which is more "photograph" than "snapshot". It is of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Even though I didn't take lots of photos after that time in the late 70s until the present decade, when I first got my digital cameras, I have always had the interest and the 'eye', and when I began taking photos for my online galleries, this 'eye' has served me well. I always make an attempt to stage a photo a bit differently, and to take my viewers to the places where I shoot the photos.
Photography and videomaking seem to have always been a part of my life, and have always been recording that life. So along with the words, I have the pictures. Cause I'm the one who takes them.
I'm the one who listens. I'm the one who tells stories. I'm the one who cares. I'm the one with advice, even though it might not be exactly right all the time.
I'm the one who makes mistakes.
Each one of us is special. Some of us never believe this, no matter how much we hear it. I wear my specialties in my heart as badges of the courage to live, experience, and hope in a world which sometimes seems overwroght with problems and bad advice. (which hopefully I didn't give!) I love to observe and admire people in all walks of life as they wind their way through the maze of life. I will try to connect with humanity through my words and pictures, and inject hope and care into their existence.
I'm the one with the positive attitude.
I don't want to be the negative Nelly, or the one who messes up all the time. I might make mistakes, as do we all, but I'm the one who wants to correct the mistakes as soon as is humanly possible. I am the one who never stops trying, or learning, or praying.
I'm the one who loves the Universe, and who appreciates it's energy and completeness.
I'm the one who questions. I might needle people sometimes, but I truly wish to know about you and what's bothering you. I also hope to help you get over this bothersome attitude and get happy. I guess it's the writer in me which finds the minutae of life so interesting and never gets bored of it.
I'm pretty much like you, if you're a blogger. We are the ones who read, and write, and make plans. We eat. We sleep. We live. Always with hope and assurance. Sometimes with trepidation and caution. We are friends, neighbors, and soulmates. Some of us might be more creative, or have more stories to tell, but we all manage to be here ready to help one another in times of need.
Sometimes the simple words one reads on a blog early in the morning can help to brighten their whole day, block the clouds from their horizon, and help them to bask in the beauty of this world and the Universe.
I'm the one who hopes those words are sometimes mine. I am the one who is more than the sum of my parts.

"Sometimes the simple words one reads on a blog early in the morning can help to brighten their whole day, block the clouds from their horizon, and help them to bask in the beauty of this world and the Universe."
SO VERY TRUE.
Absolutely wonderful post! I love it! Thanks so much for sending this one in!
You are indeed a writer--and a wonderful one at that!
Dear Mike,
RYC about the bingo barbque bash........
Bingo as in, "bingo! got that one!" *reload another shell* "Bingo! got that one too!"
I'll be back to read your post,
Randy
Those words read in the morning, and those photos are sometimes yours. I love blogs where people share thier lives, their words and photos. Your blog fits all of those. Your words flow smoothly and never drag on. Reading what you write is easy and enjoyable. I have enjoyed walking your journey with you to your new home.
I guess I'm with you on the "writer's block." If I ever find I can't write, it usually turns out that I just have something to say that some shy or reticent part of me doesn't want to reveal. We have established previously that you and I have a lot in common. You've just confirmed it.
Great post, Mike. I always enjoy what you write, even if I don't have time to comment or anything intelligent to say, LOL.
You are the one who writes THOUGHTFULLY!
Great entry, Mike. I like it very much. The photography aspect (still and video) has always been what I like most about your blog.
 Thanks Mike for sharing all the ways you are the "one who . . . " :goodjob:
Now that the busyness leading up to St. Patrick's Day is over, I can check you out at Facebook.
Except I think I will zone out most of tomorrow before getting back on track again.
Thanks again for your interesting post.
~~Blessings 'n cheers
Nice to get to know you a little bit. I'm horrible with advice, but never grow tired of receiving it.
I am a lot of those things and more, but it is as tho they are parts of a roulette wheel and wherever it is when the earth turns, there I am. I don't always appreciate the choice. Right now I am recovering from the flu...very slowly. When a person is usually very healthy, it is hard to be sick without a pitypot.
Happy week!
Great entry.... ~ V
Very nice. I too, love to take pictures and have just said that I would love to take a photography class. I enjoy it so much and when my neighbor recently asked me to come take pictures of her son signing his letter of intent to college, I was flattered. I did it with enthusiasm and wonder if I missed my calling in life. How cool would it be to take pictures for a living. I don't post a lot of them here, and mostly I photograph family or my dog but sometimes I just take my camera on a drive and take pictures. It's fun. It's interesting to me what some people find interesting to photograph. I love the water, so I have a ton of pictures by the Lake or Bay and the lighthouse. It's calming to me.
People are still my fave and little children, the best. But nature is good too. I would love a better camera.
And one day I probably will!!
P.S. RYC: I am not PROUD of this being my 3rd marriage but I blame my youth and unrealistic fantasy of Prince Charming coming to my 'rescue' and it took me a long time in life to be comfortable with who I am.
I do love to write as well, but do much better when it's for a purpose, like an essay for an assignment. (I'm not in school any more) or something emotional, to get an outlet, like a poem. Unfortunately a lot of my poetry I did when I was younger was before the digital age and is not saved. Anywhere, or it was given as a gift and I did not save it.
Today's technology is so great to document things. I just don't write like I used to. But I enjoy it.
Nice PARTS all and MORE! I can relate to so much of this and I'm sure others do to. The experiences in life are a gift to share. I think you got that part covered.
I've been accused of having a positive attitude many times. This morning I was feeling so negative, however, that I didn't even think I'd log on to Xanga. But -- a satisfactory visit to the doctor, followed by a successful visit to a bathroom, and my post-operative woes might be over soon. So now I feel more like you (chipper, upbeat, pick your synonym).
Surgery again on April 2. I'll deal with that then.
And, as one person said (in different words), your worst literary efforts are pretty darn good.
I love reading these lists, and yours is very interesting, Mike. I like that you are having fun with more than one way to express the ideas you have in your mind (ie: video, photo, wordsmithing).

I like this. I think this gives us a great picture of you! Thank you for sharing :sunny:
You write so well. No wonder you never run out of things to write about. I am one of those you mentioned. I get blocked a lot!
Hi Mike,
A beautifully written post! It's been fascinating reading people's "I am the one" blogs. Each is of course completely different from the other. :sunny:
Loved reading your post! Sounds like you have an interesting life; no wonder you can find a lot of things to write about!
I sometimes get writer's block, but not because I can't think of anything to say. I have a habit of allowing my characters to lead me away from the storyline. I sometimes have to stop because my characters have gotten themselves into a mess, and I have to figure out how to get them out of it.
Nice
I am glad to see you now have facebook and I hope you're settled into your new place, because I sorely miss your awesome comments on my xanga...
that was beautiful! photography. you can only remember so much with words. a picture is worth a thousand. that's what i like about photography, that we can capture those delicate moments when life is so perfect, so sincere, and cherish them for always. great post.
I've been enjoying reading observations by people about themselves. It's interesting to see how we feel when we are forced into retrospectiveness (think that's a word?). This is a good topic, and a good entry.
i often can't think of that much to say...
What amazes me about you Mike is, you do find a ton to write about. You never seem to lack the ability to write a lengthy and yet interesting and informative piece. Myself, I love to write but go for shorter little bits and pieces and definitely not as informative. About my posts, yes, in RSBlain I am posting a lot less, the loss of Terry was the first big change for me and politics managed another big set back. I do write in Xanga weekly, in my photo blog. I love taking my photos and enjoy sharing them within a small group of people who jump in on particular weekly challenges. It gives me regular pleasure to do it and keeps me in touch with Xanga which will remain my main blogging home as long as it exists. http://www.xanga.com/PhotoGraphics Have a great week Mike.
RYC: I don't know what to say after reading that comment. I am so sorry for your loss, Mike. I do go to doctors but I tag along someone, because I'm still scared...
Thanks for all the kind words of encouragement and reading my whole blog for 2009. I returned and read with great interest about your new endeavor of homeownership. I'm very pleased with you! I know that it's been a dream of yours for some time. Double wide mobiles are more sound than most people give them credit.
I like to cook 'in' on the weekends. Actually, I like to get imaginative on Sunday afternoon and cook up loads of stuff for the week. Try it sometime!
