  • December Passings

    Bettiepage

She always looked so innocently lascivious. She's sometimes seen posing with whips and in leather, but she looks like she's having so much fun. The famous wink, immortalized in the Playboy Centerfold for January 1955 (above), seems to tell us that she knows she's buck naked, but it's all in good clean fun.

Bettie Page, called "the queen of the pinups" by Hugh Hefner, editor of Playboy Magazine, quietly passed away in a Los Angeles hospital on December 11, 2008. She was 85 years old. She suffered a heart attack a week ago, and went into a coma from which she never recovered.

Bettie has become one of those icons who surpass their mortality. She will live forever in the hearts of pinup lovers and art aficionados everywhere. Her pinup poses, which include not only the famous Bunny Yeager beach and jungle photos, but bondage photos taken by Irving Klaw in the 40s and 50s, are pleasantly innocent, even when she's brandishing a whip, or trussed up in leather.

Her career spanned about 20 years, and although always embraced by those of us who collect pinup art, she almost disappeared from the pop cultural scene until 1991, when Disney's The Rocketeer was released, starring Jennifer Connelly as a Bettie Page inspired character. Suddenly, her star ascended again, with a raft of magazine articles and appreciations. The "real" Bettie Page had given up posing for nude photos and reformed long ago, becoming a born again Christian, but never completely denounced her fame as a pinup queen. She often wondered why people were still entranced with her photos, which she would autograph well into her later years. Interviewers and interested parties were not allowed to photograph her face as an elderly lady. She wanted to be "known" as she was in her youth, forever winking at the world. Her image will forever be the image of the sultry but sweet "siren next door". Somehow I think it's fitting that I like to collect images of both cartoon siren Betty Boop and leggy Bettie Page. They both embody wholesome sexuality.

As we "baby boomers" age, we are finally noticing that our cultural icons are fast disappearing. However, their legacies live on and on. Bettie has a website, and her images are forever etched in the public consciousness.

(Note: I do NOT consider the above pose, in which we can plainly see Bettie in all her glory, as purient. It is the Playboy centerfold from 1955, and I present it as it appeared in the magazine. I could have chosen a photo with her clothed or in a bikini, but since it's Christmas time, and this is a famous image with a Christmas theme, I chose this image as my memorial tribute photo. I certainly hope nobody is offended, and I am rating this blog entry for "basic guidance".)

Forrest J. Ackerman, the "Ackermonster", longtime editor of monster magazine "Famous Monsters of Filmland", and noted as the man who coined the term "sci-fi", passed away at the age of 92 last week. Millions of baby boomers who grew up inspired by his quirky puns and vast knowledge of horror lore mourn the death of this iconic figure, who took visitors on "tours" of his Los Feliz home, the "Ackermansion" for decades, until he was forced to sell most of collection of memorabilia to pay the bills  following a suit he brought against the editors of the "new" FM magazine early in the last decade.

In 1960 young boys played marbles, and traded cards at recess and at lunchtime. I can clearly remember trading "Monster" cards, with photos of old Universal horror films, topped with funny captions. Around 1963, when I was in fifth grade and my brother a couple of years behind me, he began to collect "Famous Monsters of Filmland", a cheaply made black and white magazine with bright colorful covers featuring horror movies and stars.

My brother and I would spend lazy afternoons reading the magazines, and wondering about the movies depicted, sometimes long before we actually saw the films. A lot of boomers my age who loved horror films were introduced to the old Universal movies by Mr. Ackerman by way of the "filmbooks" in his magazine, long before anyone could just go to a video store and check one out. We had to wait for the films to come out on programs like "Chiller" or "Strange Tales of Science Fiction". Both my brother Daniel and I became experts in the horror genre, owing partly to our exposure to Famous Monsters.

In 1965, Daniel wrote a letter to the "fang mail" section of the magazine, but his letter wasn't printed. However, Forry called our house, and invited the family to tour his home in Los Feliz, up in the Hollywood hills, where he had a massive collection of horror memorabilia, including books, models, and costumes from a variety of old science fiction and horror films. Forry had known actors like Bela Lugosi, who played Dracula, personally, and with his magazine boldly staked out a niche for himself as "Dr. Acula", the go-to guy for genre expertise.

First my mother thought we were receiving a prank call, and she hung up on Forry, but we got his number and called him back. That afternoon spent in the Ackermansion, which was filled with memorabilia, is a time I still remember explicitly, even though it was over 40 years ago.

My brother and I were thrilled to actually see Forrest J.Ackerman in person. I would say that he was the very first cultural "icon" I embraced. My brother compiled quite a collection of the magazines, and I don't have any of them, but they can command considerable sums on ebay and in the collector's market.

When I put up my website in 1999, one of the "photo expeditions" I kept planning was a trip back to Forry's place in Los Feliz to take pictures and to interview him for one of my "MikeVideos". I kept putting it off, and in 2002, Ackerman had to auction off most of his collectibles. He moved to a "mini Ackermansion" and still gave tours of the 10 percent of his collection he kept, but a visit to anything other than the original place I remember from my youth would have been devastating.

Forrest J. Ackerman will be greatly missed.

EDIT: 10:09a.m. pst. I'm updating the part of my website dedicated to Betty Boop, The Betty Boop Pages, this week, adding individual pages for each of the over 50 composite artworks I've created for the site, and inserting some new composite artworks as well. One of the older composites, from October 2003, is "VampBoopirella" based on the Vampirella character Forrest J. Ackerman created for the comic book he first published in 1969. Nuttin fancy, just a Frazetta print with Betty's head attached, but another fitting image for this tribute, and also serves to announce the revitalizaion of The Betty Boop Pages. MFN/ppf

  • you are such a ham!

I've heard of this pinup girl and that she just died.  She was something and is that why dad would make me wait in the car when we went to get the car fixed? lol

  • THERE WAS PORN IN THE '50S!?

Well, of course... it makes sense now. It must've been brought here by communists to divert our attention from their take-overs of insignificant Asian nations!

  • Ah death, I find it an annoyance lately. Good tributes to their lives here though. :spinning:

  • Forget the reports to be filed and papers to be graded. I came on over anyway. These are beautiful tributes, Mike. Well done. For all our sakes, I really wish you could have done the 'trip back to Forry's place in Los Feliz to take pictures and to interview him for one of my "MikeVideos".'

  • Nice tributes!  The picture of Bettie Page is not pornographic, IMO.  Admittedly, I knew absolutely nothing about these two "boomer" icons, probably due to the fact that I was born the last year of the boomer generation.  It's nice to read your tributes to find out more, though!

  • Hey Michael!

Both of these icons are well known to me - being male... and a long-time fan of monsters/horror/sci-fi. It's easy for folks to forget those two things about me, being that I'm a pastor. Very nice tributes, my friend. When I pass, I hope you'll write something for me. :goodjob:

Certainly, by definition, the Bettie Page photo isn't pornographic, but I am glad my 11-year old isn't awake yet, as he is often hanging over my shoulder as I surf. We really don't need a round of "Daddy looks at nekkid boobies" at church, do we? Which by the way... I don't... not those not attached to my wife, anyways... and now I've officially said too much! :nono: LOL!

As a young teenager, I read "Monsters" all the time. I am still fascinated by such tales and imagery. With the passing of Ackerman, we have lost an artist.

    Have a great weekend!

    SAVE SANTA!

    ~Steve :sunny:

  • I hope you are enjoying the Christmas Holidays so far Mike!

Thanks for sharing your memories of your childhood.

    :) :sunny: :spinning: :fun:

  • I saw the movie about Bettie Page...I'd never heard of her, but I'm pretty sure my Grampa had.  Sometimew we weren't allowed to go into the garage where he had his workshop until Gramma "fixed" it, and I suspect Bettie or others like her might have been the reason.  I tried not to look at various postcards and such that sometimes eluded Gramma's sweep, but we all knew they were out there!  Anyway, I thought the movie was interesting, but I always wonder how much of any movie like that is pure invention.

I'm sure I saw some of the horror stuff, too,  but I also tried not to look at that - monsters were (are) scary!

Hope you will excuse my scarcity over the rest of the holidays, although I may be peeking in from time to time.  Between the extra work hours and having family obligations, my Xanga time may be limited.

I'd like to wish you a Merry Christmas, though, just in case I don't make it back before then!

  • Wonder WHAT the kids would say when they see those names

  • Yikes! Not work safe...I had to scramble to delete some cache and cookies on the double. I'll have to view your site with no images from now on if I view it from work.

  • Even Christmas is not without this type of commercialization...

I moved on from Famous Monsters to Creepy magazine....Also I vaguely remember collecting the Universal monster collecting cards. I think the Monster mash song was also part of the craze about Frankenstein and the Mummy but People tend to blame the Abbot and Costello monster meet up as part of the end of that trend...

  • @History_Nut - Dear Wanda, You don't know how many times I've kicked myself that I didn't try to go back for a visit. In fact, each year I told myself that Forry wasn't getting any younger, and I should make the call, since he didn't live that far from me. I didn't realize until I read his obit in the L.A. Times that he had sold his collection back in 2002. That makes me sad, cause I somehow hoped that perhaps his home would become a "tribute museum" after he passed away. Now that cannot happen!

@mourning2dancing - Dear Steve, As I mention in the entry, my brother actually collected the magazine (as well as early Warren comics mags "Creepy" and "Eerie" which predated "Heavy Metal" by a decade as fantastic genre magazines.) But we both enjoyed reading it. I've looked for copies of old issues at flea markets and online, and the prices are astronomical. Too bad nobody created a website or a CD-rom collection, like the early Marvel comics or Mad magazine.  Mom threw out my Fantastic Four collection, and I'm sure those comics are worth money now too!

@bluemarsupial - Dear Rebakah, First of all thank you so much for the visit and the comment. I do want to mention that I wrote in the letter I sent that the tribute photo I used of Bettie was in the nude, so if you visited from the message, you were "warned" ahead of time. I don't usually post nudity, as that's not my style, and this is a "family blog". The passing of Bettie Page is a milestone, however. I made an editorial decision to use this photo. As an artist and photographer myself, I honor the original intent of the photograph, which is, after all, a Playboy centerfold. I contemplated adding a bikini or "pasties", but felt that the original image is chaste enough. Sorry if this caused any problems.

  • May both of them rest in peace.

  • It is nice to see a pin up with a real body.

    Vamp Booperella is awesome.

My age gap.... I had a friend over and his wife was talking about watching Barney growing up. She wasn't a baby anymore, but I sure felt like friend was child molesting, that age gap was just weird for me.

Me and my guys, we watch old Felix the Cat and Casper. I wonder if that means they will like the 50 pin-ups when they are teens? May be saving old icons over here one kid at a time. hehehe.
:sunny: :sunny: :sunny:  :sunny: :sunny: :sunny:

  • What a great smile! And nice legs, indeed.

  • Funny how many people will admire Michelangelo's "David" but denounce pinups.  I think many people miss the concept of nudity being art when photography is the medium.  Its all in how its presentation and I think your selection is timely and tasteful.  Besides, who among us can claim to have helped start something as big as the sexual revolution?

  • Mid and late 50's were my teen years, but I never heard of Bettie Page.  Of course, I was so naive I never saw a pinup that didn't have clothes on in those days!!  lol   When I saw the picture, the one thing I noticed is how "natural" she looks compared to the silicone-enhanced gals of today.  Even Marilyn Monroe probably would be "small" in comparison nowadays.  I don't even like the "overstuffed" look of  the women nowadays.  But, then again, I am a woman---not a guy!!  lol

And I didn't know Ackerman either.  I was such a wimp that horror movies scared me up until I was married.  As a teenager, I would force myself to stay up late on Friday nights, when "Ghoulia" would host a weekly horror show on Tucson TV.  I thought that the more I watched them, the less I would be scared and have nightmares.  It did work----but took a long time.  Hated the nightmares!!!! Would you believe that even such movies as "Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein" would scare the beejeebees out of me??   When I think of the stuff the kids see now--and it doesn't even  faze them!!

I have been reading you through my subscription digest, so you don't see that I have been reading you.  I just don't comment much at all anymore.  But I haven't forgotten you.  Always enjoy the pics you take when you roam around LA and vicinity.

  • Betty Boop scares me

  • The guy I care for has Bette above his toilet with a nurses uniform on. It is priceless. Merry Christmas, Mike, Judi

  • Thanks for the invite back to your site. A pleasant visit here, especially for the looks at Bettie

  • I'm sure they will be missed by a lot of people from different generations. I don't know much about the two icons and I appreciate the efforts you put into their tributes.

  • I knew about Betty Boop, but not Bettie Page. Of course, I did not pay much attention to centerfolds.

It's surprising to me that I didn't know Forrest J. Ackerman, either, as I have tended to be a fan of montster movies. I think I vagueley remember Monster Magazine.

Anyway, those were nice tributes to them.

    ~~Blessings 'n cheers

  • A wonderful fitting tribute for two amazing icons. I really hope there is some kind of trust in place to keep what is left of Ackerman's collection! Selling the rest of it off feels so much like seperating an orphan from it's siblings.

  • well dayum....how did i miss this one!
