  • This Just In: A Change for America

    "President-elect Obama faces daunting challenges"
By TERENCE HUNT, Associated Press Writer – 3 mins ago

WASHINGTON – His name etched in history as America's first black president-elect, Barack Obama turned Wednesday from the jubilation of victory to the sobering challenge of leading a nation worried about economic crisis, two unfinished wars and global uncertainty.

"The road ahead will be long. Our climb will be steep," Obama cautioned.

Young and charismatic but with little experience on the national level, Obama smashed through racial barriers and easily defeated Republican John McCain to become the first African-American destined to sit in the Oval Office, America's 44th president. He was the first Democrat to receive more than 50 percent of the popular vote since Jimmy Carter in 1976.

Barack Obama's Acceptance Speech: 11/04/08 (from MSNBC video)

    A personal assessment.

In my blog entry for November 3rd, 2004, I wrote:  "...once, I even had a nightmare vision of the country with Bush at the reins for another four years...I have the same queasy feeling as I write this that I did in 2000, when my candidate of choice, Al Gore, won the election, and was given the popular vote on television... I believe Bush "used" the attacks on the WTC to "scare" the American public so that he could invade Iraq and finish the job his father didn't in 1991, during the first Gulf War. I was certainly hoping that the majority of Americans didn't "fall for this", but looking at the numbers, it seems that fear trumped intelligence and rationality at the polls...I won't give up my hope that Bush (whom I've labeled the "Antichrist" in other blog entries) will be "fired" by the American People. But I don't feel as well as I should looking at the numbers this morning. It's going to be a weird few days. That's for sure..."

I voted right after work at around 4pm yesterday afternoon. All day I'd been reading on the internet that there were long lines and an unprecedented turnout. As usual, at my polling place in the small town of Lomita, there were no lines and I easily breezed through the process, solidly inking "Obama" on the front page of the ballot. After 2000 and 2004, I didn't want to get my hopes up too high. Talking to people at work who are staunch Republicans, I have been extremely upset to hear otherwise intelligent people talk about how Sarah Palin was a great choice for V.P. among other things this election. My candidate (mentioned at the end of my 2004 blog entry) was Hillary Clinton. Before the Democratic convention, when Obama's momentum seemed positive, I, like Hillary, began to support him. I read more about him, listened to more of his speeches, and began to get immersed in the historical precedent happening in my lifetime. As a Democrat, I would vote for the party's candidate, and the Obama machine ran right over the Clinton candidacy, and I easily switched sides for solidarity's sake.

Throughout the day I got some queasy feelings that McCain (and his horrible choice for veep) might just win. I don't like to believe "polls" which don't tell the whole story. I saw more and more "blue" states on the electoral maps, but I kept my celebratory feelings to myself. I didn't want my hopes dashed as they were in 2000 and 2004. (At least I respect McCain more than I ever did Bushie, so I wouldn't have been that devastated if he won.

The pain in my leg, which is getting worse with time, caused me to take a pain pill before 6pm last night, and I nodded out at around 6:30. I awoke right before 8pm and turned on the TV. I usually don't watch TV news, but I fell into an old habit, jumping from ABC to CBS to NBC to Fox to CNN. At 8pm, all within seconds of each other, the election was called for Obama. He needed 270 electoral votes. He had over 300 at 8pm. The final tally (as of this writing, and reported by CNN's website: ) 338 to 163. As reported by the AP in the article excerpted at the top of this entry, not since Jimmy Carter has a Democratic candidate gained more than 50 per cent of the vote. Obama won the popular vote as well, although not as overwhelmingly. (62,682,389 vs. 55,543,527)

History has been made. I watched both McCain's and Obama's election night speeches. McCain was gracious and upright. He shussed his audience in Arizona each time they began to boo Obama. I actually felt sorry for him. He ran in 2000 against Bush but lost, and at 72 will probably not be running again. McCain seemed ready to embrace the historical precedent, and the new president elect. Some of the blog articles I've read this morning by his supporters have not been as gracious. I was so impressed with Obama's speech I embed it in this blog entry. I feel as if America has turned a page. We have a Democratic congress and a Democratic President, after eight years of indecision and bad choices. We have a chance to not only change history, but to become a better country in the eyes of the world, where America had sunk to new lows during the Bush presidency.

For me, it doesn't matter whether Barack Obama is black or white. I kind of like the fact that he is "multiracial." Just like my beloved Los Angeles. America is not an old white boy's country any more. We're a much more diversified and vibrant country now than we have ever been. Obama will succeed and America will succeed. Looking at all the beaming faces shown in Times Square and in Chicago where Obama spoke made me feel better about living in America right now than I have felt in a long time.

    At least for eight years.

"Fear trumped intelligence and rationality at the polls", I wrote in 2004. In 2008, I regained my faith in America and her people, my diversified brethren. This year, common sense and hope trumped the good ol boys. I took a new fresh breath of air this morning. I approach the work day with more vibrancy than I have in a long time. (I didn't even blanch at the fact that I had to tap my overdraft protection account for $317.00) The news is in, and it's good news. Great news. Hooray for America.

Yes, we can. And we did!

  • Screw the race aspect. I want to see whether or not he can live up to the expectations he's set forth as a human being in the White House.

  • all day yesterday, these words were playing in my head: "thy will be done." i have thought for some time now that we have gotten ourselves in such a monumental mess that it is going to take a miracle of Godly proportions to get us out. God seems to delight in choosing "unlikely candidates" for tasks of this nature & i do hope that is the case here...

  • Aside from the overdraft stuff, great post! Yeah, the race thing doesn't matter to me one mite. Maybe I'm part of that younger generation that really doesn't care.

  • History in the making! What a thing to tell the great-grand children.

    @Schristian -

    I agree.

  • I agree! I feel a good bit more hopeful for life in general, and it's a good feeling. Well, I did blanch a little when I read in the St. Pete Times that Palin may run on the ticket in 2012. Hopefully by then, she will be a long forgotten blip on the political radar.

  • Dear Mike,
It's certainly been an interesting race. There is so much about politics that I don't like *sigh*.. So I don't follow it closely. I get bit & pieces, here & there. We are pretty hammered with it especially toward the end. I was a Hillary supporter as well... I'm hopefully. And I would be hopeful who ever won because some things need to change... I like the multiracial aspect as well.. Let's face it - that is the USA... We are all peoples. It would be wonderful if race became as much of an issue as eye color - none at all.
    peace,
    Jane

  • Dear Mike, awwww, you are so sweet!   Thank you for all your kind words!  I sure do appreciate it!! It means so much!!  Hope you have a great night over there!  Love Ya!! (((Hugs)))

  • Is the leg pain something you have to live with or can the doctors do something for you? I hope for the latter. I hope you have some respite from it.

I just left a post on another site that opened with "May god help us!" is response to the election. I reminded the poster that McCain wants us to be a united country. I was nearly in tears and elections just don't do that to me normally. I posted about what I concluded about that. I don't care about what race he is, either (other than the sense of it's about time for more equality). I truly think he was the better man. McCain might have been the better choice in 2000, but not now, especially with Palin as his VP choice (a little more evidence to me as to why he wasn't the right choice -- and perhaps for a few independents and even some Republicans). things, they are achangin'. I pray that the are changing for the better, as we believe they will.

  • Obama's black?

    Hey Michael!

Hehe, ok, so yeah I know all about President Elect Obama's roots... I just don't give a rip. To me, the "first ever black President of the U.S." just isn't as historically huge as it would have been 40, 30, or even 20 years ago. Maybe it's because I've lived in some very multicultural places, and have a total disdain for the lingering racial hatred in the South (trust me, it indeed lingers here). Maybe it doesn't seem like a big deal to me because I have become far less "patriotic" and more "globally-aware." Don't get me wrong - I love our country... we're the richest and most powerful empire in world history... but I will not use the phrase "God bless America" because He already has! Oh boy, how He's blessed us! But I believe God always blesses people for a reason - to be a blessing to others.

But I'm about to start preaching... and no one needs that. :giggle:

While I must honestly say that I disagree that Senator McCain was not the better choice, I will absolutely admit that I was never pleased nor excited about any of the choices offered. Even so, Obama will become the next President, and the time has come for all of us to end the division that politics has caused (much more divisive than religion has ever been), and roll up our sleeves and work together, in the Spirit of God, to stop accumulating, and protecting what we're accumulating at all costs, and do what we can to help those who can't help themselves (notice I said "can't", not "won't"). Our new President has my prayers and my support. If he fails to be the righteous leader (yet imperfect person) that he has the majority of the nation believing, I will look somewhere else to put my support in 4 years. My prayer is that he proves me wrong, and shows me that he was the better choice after all.

    BE blessed!
    Steve :sunny:

  • I was impressed with the grace with which McCain gave his speech. I like what he had to say about Obama and his ability to wake up a politically sleepy generation of voters who may have otherwise never made it to the polls. I don't agree with everything Obama says but I remain optimistic.

  • I read the polls, but was not convinced, either. I believed Obama could win, but I was really surprised that he accumulated way more than the electoral votes needed and that his popular vote was so high. It was wonderful to hear before I needed to get to bed that it was all over. I stayed up for McCain's concessions speech, which I thought was gracious, and for Obama's inspiring acceptance speech. It is his ability to communicate that was one of the reasons I supported him -- not just that I wanted to vote Democratic as I am registered. I did vote for some Republicans for local offices. I pray that we will see changes, but as Obama himself has warned, they will not come easily nor swiftly.

BTW, I am still wondering about your leg/hip condition and praying that you will get help for it.

    ~~Blessings, prayers 'n cheers :goodjob:

  • It is historic indeed!

  • Well, I've watched some political comedy show on ShowComedy and they did show that McCain and Bush spoke of the same things, so I guess that would have hardly been a better choice for the U.S. However, now that Obama is in office, I fear for Pakistan's welfare since he means it when he says that he would end terrorism. Despite everything, Pakistan has been termed as a terrorist country because Bush made it that way. I won't say that it's really that peaceful either, but if you just sit and watch, people will kill each other off here. Plus that idiot Pakistanis have in office won't help a bit and I wouldn't put much trust in such a coward either. *sigh* I just pray that Obama doesn't attack this country with armed forces.

  • I have never seen water in the Los Angeles river before. Great post. Judi
