  • Internet Island Topic Post 33.1: Working at FedMart

FedMart: Internet Island Topic #33.1: Working: The Most Interesting Place I've Worked: As we age, we become more experienced at what we do for a living. Sometimes we go through dozens of jobs, and sometimes we end up with the gold watch. What can you tell us about one particular job. Explain what made it stand out.

fedmart2 The Southern California retail environment has always been highly competitive, especially in Los Angeles, and there are a lot of department stores which, over the years, have blanketed the area with their stores, then quietly disappeared when they weren't able to cope. Once upon a time a businessman named Sol Price (who later founded The Price Club, which became Costco, WalMart's chief competitor) owned and operated a small chain of department stores in San Diego called FedMart. Price's stores held a mix of both hard and soft goods, and though not as complete as some department stores, his stores were successful. The stores had innovations like optical centers and pharmacies, now a regular staple in lots of department stores.  As the chain grew throughout Southern California, it gained the interest of a German entrepreneur named Hugo Mann, who had been instrumental in reorganizing West Germany's fortunes after World War II. Mann's successful "hypermarket" concept, exemplified by his German Mobilia stores, combined hard and soft goods with a full market. His furniture stores, based on a concept later copied by Ikea, were three stories tall and sold "knock down" or do it yourself furniture. He acquired the FedMart chain in 1975, fired Sol Price, began buying old White Front and Two Guys locations, other stores that hadn't fared well in the competitive market, and turned them into large "big box" American versions of his hypermarkets.

I found myself out of work in 1977. The local Two Guys in Torrance was being turned into a FedMart. Mann had bought the Builder's Emporium next door, and it was planned to be reconverted into a Mobilia style Furniture store. I gained employment at the Builder's, which hadn't gone out of business yet, although plenty of construction was happening in the vacant building on the Two Guys lot.

Jim, the gentleman who hired me I have always called "My Godfather". He had been a carpet buyer for the Two Guys chain, and was now installed at the Builder's as mangager. My expertise was gardening. The garden department, along with Builder's other departments, would soon be gone, when the store closed and started selling furniture, but Jim liked me and made it seem as if I were being granted admittance to the ground floor of a great operation. The pay was on scale with what I had been getting as a department manager at my previous position. I actually got a little more per week. But the opportunity seemed to be there for great things in the future, although this particular Builder's wasn't too busy.

While employed at the Builder's, I got to know Norm, the new manager of the still unopened FedMart, quite well. Where Jim was volatile and hyperactive, Norm was calm as a rock. He was a big man, in his early 40s, with large hands which completely enveloped mine when he shook them. He was bald, and must have had to shop for his clothes in the big and tall men's department. I never saw Norm get mad. But I remember his hearty laugh. He reminded one of Mr. Clean. I worked in the back end of the newly opened "Furniture to Go", receiving and warehousing merchandise, driving the delivery truck and assembling the furniture. As the chain opened new furniture outlets, I became one of the managers to travel from location to location helping set up the new departments.

Sadly, the do it yourself furiture craze wasn't ready to happen in Southern California yet, and all the Furniture to Go stores closed down. I was able to drive the small bobtail truck with FedMart emblazoned on it's side, so I was transferred to the Southern California division offices, where I became the shuttle truck driver. For a while, I would make my own schedule, moving merchandise of all kinds up and down the California coast. I got to know the warehouse and store managers of dozens of stores, and made many contacts within the corporation. My "godfather" became the manager of one of the Long Beach FedMart's, and when the job of shuttle company truck driver disappeared, Jim put in a request for me to join his management staff as Hard Lines Merchandise Manager.

FedMart had been around since the early 50s in the San Diego area, but when the chain blanketed Los Angeles and Orange Counties with stores in 1978 it seemed as if they'd taken over. Their red and white FedMart logo, with it's asterisk, became almost ubiqutous. In some larger cities, like Long Beach, there were multiple FedMarts. The first stores to have trouble, the Furniture to Go stores, had cost Hugo Mann a lot of money. He was a real estate speculator, and eventually would bankrupt FedMart and sell it's stores, which now are for the most part Targets, in 1982. But for the five years I was with the company, my fortunes seemed to rise and fall with theirs. I kept rising up the management "food chain". I was happy at the "Bellflower" store, which was the third and least popular of the Long Beach FedMart stores. I got a job there for one of my friends as a food stocker. The store on Bellflower Avenue was less popular because it's food department didn't have perishables. My friend and the other stockers worked during the day at the Bellflower store. In a typical FedMart location, the food crew stocked the shelves overnight, when there were no customers present.

80-s-81 We had company beach parties and other social gatherings. It was at the Bellflower FedMart where I met Bruce the nudist. I was involved in social as well as worktime relations with a lot of the employees, including of course the store manager, my "Godfather" Jim, who had even stayed with me for a couple of nights when he and his wife split up. After the whirlwind couple of years previous, where I had been involved in store openings and closings, and shuttled merchandise all over the Southland, I was satisfied with thinking my stay at the Bellflower store would be for a while. I was wrong.

Norm over at the Torrance store was tapped by high level division management and given a large pay increase to take over the "worst store in the chain", located in Culver City, just northwest of downtown Los Angeles  His orders were to report in six months. In the meantime he would create a team of better managers to take with him. Even though I liked my position at the Bellflower store, Norm picked me to run the warehouse at Culver City. I was called into the manager's office by Jim one day and he related that I would be transferred immediately to the South Street store, Long Beach's largest and busiest FedMart, to run their warehouse operations. I figured that I was just moving up the ladder again, because Bellflower wasn't really high on the chain's priority list. South Street made a lot of money, and had recently installed a computerized point of sale system, now ubiquitous in retail, but fairly new in 1980. In truth, my short stay as Warehouse Manager for the South Street store was merely training for Culver City. I and four other specially selected management team members from around the Los Angeles area were to be given an intensive six month training period at the stores which had, like Culver City, installed the point of sale system, which involved bar coding instead of price stickers, and computerized inventory management.

Sadly I left the team at Bellflower and reported across town at South Street. At the time, I thought my position at South Street was a delicious change of pace. The clientele was bustling. The hours went fast. My warehouse crew was more experienced than I, and we had so many deliveries that we had not one, but two forklifts. I soon forgot Bellflower, making new friendships and business acquaintences. I received a pay raise, and after I learned the various steps needed to receive, barcode and stock merchandise in all the departments, including now a full service market with meat, produce, and frozen foods departments, I found myself teaching what would soon be the other members of Norm's new Culver City team.

After six months, when I was totally immersed in the South Street experience, I received another meeting in the manager's office with South Street's store manager, and given my transfer orders to Culver City. I also received a letter announcing the formation of a new management team at the store, where rampant theft and disregard for customer service had seen the store take a lot of profit hits since it had opened a few years earlier. Norm was the new store manager. I would run the warehouse, which similarly to South Street, had added the point of sale hardware and software.

We were christened "The Dream Team". Besides Norm and I, there was Karen, the frontlines manager, who would be head cashier. With a slight build and bright red hair, she seemed like a misquided choice, but she was good with the books, and the Culver City store's short history was a history of bad accounting. Tim, a FedMart manager from San Diego, had been with the chain before the Germans took over. He was short, energetic, and bombastic. Norm had chosen him for Operations Manager, the number two positon.  Tony, a fresh faced clean cut young man, headed the major appliances department. David, a short curly headed powerhouse with unlimited energy, took over the market. The softlines manager at Culver City, a large imposing black gal named  "Lucky", was one of the few existiing members of the Culver City management team to stay on. She was respected by the division staff, and was known as one of the better managers in the chain already. She was also the only black manager, besides Frank, the leader of the night stocking crew, who was technically labor, since he was paid a wage instead of a salary and was the union shop steward.

In mid 1981 our tenure at the worst store in the chain began. A few white faces imported from the colonial government to keep the local lackeys in line.

David immediately encountered problems with Frank, the night manager in the market department. Frank was a tall, slim black guy who was smooth as silk. David was his polar opposite, the wiry Jew with a temper. Frank's crew was notoriously lazy, and David was supposed to be there to pump some life into them. Frank worked overnight, and David worked during the day, so there was little communication, and much infighting. David replaced a member of Frank's night crew, and Frank, as union shop steward, caused a labor stink over the firing of  the guy, who was his personal friend, and also one of the alleged thieves stealing major appliances and jewelry from the store. Frank was able to get the guy back, causing more animosity.

Karen couldn't alter the atmosphere at the front lines, where cashiers were lackluster and attention deficicient. Some were downright thieves. Karen was afraid of what might happen to her or her car one afternoon when she had to fire a large young black boxboy because he'd dented the side of a customer's car with a shopping cart. I was enlisted to do the dirty work because the timing chain had just busted on my car and I was presently using public transportation. The typical thing that happened when someone was fired from the store was that the manager's car's tires ended up slashed.

Tim walked around the place as if he were in constant amazement and maybe even fear, and as Operations Manager, he thought he could pretty much stay in his office.

fedmart Norm was the kind of manager who was feared and respected. As previously mentioned, he never got mad. He stood almost seven feet tall and was perfectly proportioned. He made quite an impression, and his voice carried throughout the store even when it wasn't being heard on the public address system. He promptly left the store every day at 5:30 p.m. Then it was the night manager's turn to be on duty. That could fall to anyone of the others except for me. I had to be at the store by 6:00 am to meet the bread vendors, so I didn't have night shifts. However, there was a small warehouse, and a lot of merchandise, so I often stayed late stacking pallets on the forklift.

Tony always seemed to be in a good mood. He devised a method of inventorying that showed up most of the shortages. He was always finding out that a jewelry or major appliance order was short. Constantly he alerted Norm to the fact his department needed more security. He tried his best to normalize inventory, but things kept disappearing. One day we found dozens of empty boxes of watches in the small nook between the freezer and the cooler in the warehouse.

Security at the store was a laugh. Ronald, another smooth talking black guy, was chief of the security team, which had three members.Security members were known to climb up into the fake "security columns" in the store and instead of try to find shoplifters, snort lines of cocaine and get high. I know this for a fact because I would do it with them. Not too long after I transferred to Culver City, I began to fit in well with the guys, and I was soon buying my drugs from Ronald, who was a dealer on the side.

In a few months, a combination of my hedonistic lifestyle off work, and the long hours at work, began to take it's toll. I scored uppers from the truck drivers when I unloaded the trucks so I could be alert. I sometimes partied into the night high on cocaine, and was unable to go into work for my shift. Norm even cautioned me to lay off the drugs one day when I called in "sick". David was fired for sending drug deliveries through the company mail sacks, so it wasn't as if I were doing anything different from any one else. By 1981, drug taking had surpassed the hippie culture of the late 60s and the disco culture of the late 70s and was entrenched in the business world. I needed to have an outlet after work, however, because the warehouse was beginning to drive me crazy. I'm sure taking drugs at the time didn't help my psyche either.

I had a nervous breakdown one morning when Frank decided to move a fifteen foot high pallet stack to get a customer a bottle of wine he couldn't reach. The pallet tipped over, spilling a mix of food and drink all over the warehouse floor. Tim had to calm me down when I broke down in the middle of the milk delivery when the crash was heard all over the store. He sent me home and told me he would take care of everything. There were a line of trucks forming outside the warehouse when I left, crying. The next morning, the line of trucks was still there. Nothing had been unloaded, and the mess still wasn't cleaned up. I left unobtrusively, and stayed home for the next week.

After much soul searching, and a few more drugs, I finally got in touch with the store and told them I couldn't run the warehouse any more. It was too much for me. For some reason I wasn't fired, but promoted. I met with Norm, Tim, and the division manager and found myself being offered the position of floor manager for the garden and nursery and barbecue departments. This was the area I managed for Ole's before I came to work for FedMart, so it was a welcome diversion from the warehouse, and a return to "home". The guy who was running the Garden Department didn't retire, but stayed on part time. I started spending a lot of my time helping to run the front lines with Karen.

One Saturday evening as I went into the vault to balance the tills and deposit the day's take into the safe, Tim was my co-manager on the floor. A group of thieves had hidden in the produce bins when the store closed, and took Tim and the shelf stocking crew hostage. At gunpoint, Tim opened the safe where I was counting money. I still remember the guy with the stocking cap and the shotgun telling me to "hit the floor, motherfu*er" which for a fleeting moment I thought was a joke Tim was playing on me. I was pretty quick at getting the cash into the time safe, and in fact made a game of seeing how fast I could count the money on my shifts,  so the only really visible bag of cash in the safe was the day's delivery of singles. It was a pretty big bag. The robbers took this big bag of singles, and thankfully didn't have us wait around all night for the time safe to open. We ended up in a row on the ground in front of the cashiers with our hands behind our backs, with our eyes closed, as the thieves escaped. Eventually Norm and the division security manager showed up and we went to a bar to unwind. After that when Tim and I closed together, he went in the safe and told me he'd never open it if I buzzed the door.

Another evening I was stopped by the division security manager when I was closing with Tony. When I'd come out of the safe on nights with Tony, he usually had already let the shelf stockers go home and told me we were done for the night. Usually, the night stockers would be working for another hour or so after I would come out of the safe after balancing the days' take. I always thought Tony's nights the store wasn't as straightened as it could be, but I certainly wasn't going to stay over myself to double check what he'd already approved.

The division security manager told me to go home. I told him we hadn't locked up yet. He said not to mind, and I called Norm at home to make sure everything was on the up and up. The next day when I arrived, I found out that the reason's for Tony's shortages were simple. After I or the other co manager would leave at night, Tony backed his truck up to the front door and made off with televisions, stereos, jewelery, and even refrigerators. He has a neat side job selling stolen merchandise.

So much for Norm's "Dream Team".

In 1982, losses at the FedMart chain and the closings of the Furniture To Go stores caused Hugo Mann to go bankrupt and sell the properties, which were acquired by the Target chain, just then moving into the California market. I stayed on till the bitter end, even going back to help liquidate the holdings of the South Street store in Long Beach, where my training for the Dream Team had occurred. My severance was a nice tidy sum, capable of holding me stable and paying my rent for much of the next four months. I didn't even look for a job for most of the summer.

The most interesting company for which I've ever worked was FedMart, and the most interesting store was certainly Culver City. In retrospect, it seems like my time with FedMart was much longer than five years.

I've always written about how the Southern California landscape changes almost as often as the movie sets manufactured in Hollywood. While searching for images of the old FedMart stores on the internet I found only what you see here. One store picture, and the sign from the Calexico store, which is the only thing standing on the property. Interesting to note that while researching the wikipedia article on FedMart for this reminsiscence, I found out that Hugo Mann owned Aldi Foods which is one of my biggest control panel customers. The wikipedia article also pointed out the similarities in the signs of FedMart and QuikTrip stores, which is another of my customers for control panels. (We manufacture a control panel which acts as a distribution system for checklane registers) And most interesting of all, neither of those stores operate in the Los Angeles area, which is one of the more cut throat retail environments in the state. Just ask FedMart. Photo of the FedMart sign from AMC site: Things Long Gone.

  • Oh grand post Mike, Judi

  • holy cripe that's a lot to say about a job. i have never heard of fed mart.. i am too young.

  • Dear Mike...
Dear, dear, Mike... This reads like a dime store novel... A made for TV movie. Seriously. You could write a screen play based on your FedMart adventures. I've never heard of FedMart and right now - I'm glad I haven't. It sounds like employment nightmare - at least the store in Culver City.
    peace,
    Jane

  • Seems like that's always how it goes. For better or for worse, there's always some sort of workplace drama. The boss is always your enemy, and the other shifts never do anything right, but this was interesting. Being a midwesterner, I can't even fully imagine what it must have been like to work in a store like that in Southern California in the early 80's. Great post.

  • you only worked there for 5yrs but you got a boat load of stories out of it.lol

my dad worked at Hughes Aircraft in Culver City but that was in the 50-60's

  • Fantastic writing, bro. :goodjob:

As I am a try-to-be-writer, I like your phrasing a lot. Excellent stuff.

  • User has whispered to baldmike2004 ...

  • my favorite and most unusual job was state judge at a dog track...loved it

  • That just sounded scary.  I have no idea what a Fedmart is.

  • Wow. I love reading your stories That link to things long gone was interesting too. I had no idea Woolworths had changed into Foot Locker. We had a TG&Y near my house when I was young. I remember when it closed... probably around 1990.

  • butt woman here....hahaha.... anyway, i found another video that has basically what i was getting out of that other video so check it now.

  • cool post!:) though never knew about FEDMART

OH YEAH! for some reasons, most jukebox players on xanga aren't working correctly. so you can't play another song, pause a song, or stop it at all right now! even replacing the code won't work. i think it's something wrong on xanga right now. the one thing you can do at the meantime is to refresh the page to switch songs, or if you get lucky (it will hit SONG TITLE) if it hits that, nothing will play. also thanks for enjoying the song! it's been stuck in me head for a bit now. also, i do miss the day when MTV was more in to MUSIC then reality shows (why not switch to RTV!? cause they don't even play videos on some days now. there a horrible channel now. also i can no longer stand REAL WORLD). some radio stations in my area are decent. though most of them play gangsa rap, or overly blunt sampled hip-hop. usually i still hit up my local record shop for anything good USED. but yeah it's internet all the way.

  • Fantastic entry as usual Mike.

  • I like these real world stories of yours...sound like they could be plots to a movie

  • I've lived in Fort Worth all my life and never even actually visited California, but I like how this abandonned chain is similar to that of the stories of "the little man" that dissapeared during the 80's.

Furniture to Go, however, was the name of an excellent T.V. series that came on TLC for a few seasons and featured two brothers revamping old furniture, just thought I'd add that....

oh, and we DO have QuikTrips here and they are almost as popular as our starbucks.  One recently had a grand opening near my house and it was JAM PACKED all day long although it offered no special sales, and there were even people wearing QuickTrip fanclub t-shirts.  It's a pretty badass gas station/drink stop/convenience store.

I have noticed you commenting alot on other people's weblogs and finally decided to stop by and check out your site.  I appreciate how much time and effort you put into it.  I wish more people would put as much time and effort into their weblogs to keep the xanga community more exciting.

  • ryc: the Achoo! page was pretty funny!

i don't normally go about making up things like MyXangaBook, but I love implenting satire, I think it's the best way to get a point across.

and thanks, but some of my posts could deffinitely be better than others, I have already made up my next post actually, it's just set to private right now while I let this one mature a bit.

You missed the kicker at the end of my header though: it was think, laugh, respond, LEARN... the most important part

lastly, it was my pleasure to subscribe to you

i have to tell you Fonzie is absolutely CHARMING in person...
and well John... sigh... just a lovely lovely man .
    .the day i met them
Fonzie Kissed one cheek and John kissed the other..and i thought i had died and gone to Heaven....

i am so glad i have that nice lil memory :)

  • What an interesting site!  I plan on coming back to read some of your older posts since the ones that I have read this night were so interesting.  Personally, I think I would of had a heart attack if masked men came into the same room where I was counting out the money.  In this day and age, robbers have a tendency to shoot all possible witnesses so I guess you were lucky to be part of a robbery during an time less violent.

  • Hi Mike!!  Just stopping by again while I could!  Wow, amazing and excellent post!! :goodjob:  I'm so sorry for the traumatic things that have happened in your past, though!  You are very brave!!

Mike, you have so many amazing things that have happened to you!!  I don't know if you've ever thought about writing a book or not, but I think you would be excellent at it!  You're very intelligent, creative, and articulate just to name a few of your many great qualities!!

Thanks for sharing all you do here!!  ((Love Ya!!)))

  • Hi Mike, we are traveling and I am on a friends little lap top>  I cannot quite figure out how to rate your page.  I will check back when I get home and can see and navigate better.

    LOVE THIS POST!

    ~QE:spinning:

  • methinks you have a template into which you insert all of your user comments :wha:

  • That's an amazing amount of adventures for one job. I don't think we've ever had FedMarts here on the East Coast.

  • Interesting, though sometimes scary. I always told myself that if the bank was ever robbed at gunpoint, I'd quit right then.

Have you ever written about how you switched from retail to what you do now? I'm not exactly sure what you do now, except that it seems to be some kind of engineering related thing.
Also, I think a photo blog of how you have changed over the years would be interesting. Apparently people think I haven't really changed much over the years except for the aging, but you always look so different in the photos you show of yourself at different times. I think it would be fun to see them side by side. I'd be willing to hunt up photos of me and do the same.

  • The world always moves on, no matter how much we wish it wouldn't so times. :sunny:

  • I used to work at Fedmart in San Diego about thirty years ago. I made good $ but hated being cold all the time (I worked in the meat dept).

  • fed-mart?  I have never heard of it... which is why these topics are so very important

  • Thanks for the memories - I used to go to the FedMart in Tucson with my mom in the 70's, I still remember the big yellow cans of apple juice with the apples around the bottom and the little dots around the top, the middle one red with "FM" on it.  My mom was friends with the butcher there and I remember being excited to get a 3 pack of underwear.  I think the Tucson one was a little more tame than the LA stores.

  • User has whispered to baldmike2004 ...

  • Is it sad that i love working at the fedmart on the deli counter? Dunno i just rly enjoy it lol

  • Funny, I worked at that FedMart in Culver City while in high school and college.   Started as box boy and progressed to frontline supervisor and was with the company when in closed up in 1982.  Definitely a 'special' place to work.
