    Health:
The pinched nerve in my back, which caused me to suffer so much pain in 2005, and which eventually shut off most of the feeling in my left hand, is at it again, with a vengeance. The two little fingers on my left hand have been without feeling since 2005. I’m used to the constant numbness, and even though I hit the wrong typewriter keys (er, I mean, computer keyboard keys) a lot, it hasn’t been that much of a bother.

However, a few weeks ago, I lost feeling in my left index finger, and this is a bit of a pain, in more ways than one. When working with hand tools in the testing department on my job, if I move the finger ‘the wrong way’ pain shoots all the way from the tip of the finger to where the damage started in my back. I’ve been trying to convince the owners of the company that I’m getting worse and not better, and would really like someone else to test the control panels, but I think they don’t think pain in a finger is cause for alarm. It’s almost time for my yearly physical, and I might just ask my doctor for a “note” this time. He has told me  that I should stop doing these ‘torque tests” which require use of my left hand, if they cause me pain.

I like to think I’m losing a little weight, although I did splurge a bit with all the candy that has been around the workplace because of Hallowe’en. I’m to the point where I’d better lose some more of this belly quickly or else I need to buy some “large” shirts so my snaps don’t continually snap open.

    Finance:
On the 25th, my very first payment for my consolidation loan comes due. That $36,000.00 sure went fast. I only used it for consolidation, and I will only have one payment a month from now on. I’m a bit upset that the BofA did charge quite a bit for each of the three balance transfers. Over 500 dollars for the $17 grand they deposited in my own checking account. They told me there would be a charge, but the language was such that it didn’t seem too high until I saw the bill. I’m pretty sure I’ll be able to pay a bit more than the $746.00 a month payment, and can now hardly wait for six months to pass, so I can ask for a reduction in the APR. It’s been sheer hell trying to close down accounts. I keep getting billed for finance charges which shouldn’t exist. (Including on BofA accounts that were supposed to be closed down by the bank when I got the consolidation account approved.) So far, phone calls to the various creditors seem to “correct the problem”, but it takes a couple of statements, and a couple of phone calls  in some cases before the computers clear me from their database. My Discover Card, which was the first account I successfully closed, has already started mailing me “come back and get 1.9% for the next six months” announcements. If only they’d lowered the APR when I was still a customer!

I’m spending most of my free time holed up in my “media room” and I’m not going on “excursions” or “photo expeditions”. Gas is now almost $3.25 a gallon at some stations. I feel a bit like a hermit or an agoraphobe on weekends, but I feel better about finances than I have in a long while.

    Xanga:
I’m “hiatusing” again a bit these days. It was really neat to be on the “front page” of Xanga for a while with one of my entries a month or so ago. I got 148 comments (ONLY 148 comments!) on the entry. I answered each comment, and I believe I got a half a dozen new readers. A lot of my readers are kind enough to give me 5 star ratings, which keeps my entries on the front pages, but then someone will come along and give me one or two stars, which knocks me off the front pages. I’ve even received “messages” which target Xangans who are supposedly giving others, including me, less stars, so that their entries are always at the top. I guess I could go to those sites and give them one star, but I’m just not one to stoke these kinds of fires. (Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.) I’m appreciative of the support from my readers, and am happy to gain new readers to the fold. Thank you all for your comments. When I do visit other Xanga sites, I do read multiple entries and attempt to cover a lot of territory.

That said, I seem to be scaling back my Xanga time as the weeks pass. Perhaps I’ll be back in the swing of things in a week or two. Two weekends ago, I spent most of my free time making the “Skyline” video, and last weekend, I didn’t even log onto Xanga I don’t believe. Nobody is “wondering where I am” and I admit, I’m not visiting much, so it’s a good thing. I’m not missed, and every three or four days I seem to have an entry to post. I’m only putting this one up because it’s been a week since I last put anything up here, and I didn’t want to put a “wayback post” up today.

I’ve wondered (yet again) what to do with the “Internet Island”. I don’t even believe I’ve “welcomed” the last couple of Islanders. I haven’t posted a topic in a month or so. I’m just not that interested in maintaining the blogring right now. However, I might just announce that this month Islanders should look back into the files and find a topic from the past on which to write. I promise to “list” any new entries in a hastily constructed topic entry. I’ll try to get over there and at least send a message to the few Islanders who regularly participate during this first week of November.

    Creativity and Entertainment:
Apologies to anyone who was really into reading the “rest” of my “After the Curtain Call” short story. I promise to rewrite and post the rest sometime soon. I mainly transcribed the first part, which is now on the blog, but the second part needs to be completely rewritten, and I have yet to make the time to do this.  I seem to carom from writing to video making, and now there’s that morph program to play around with. I must admit that since I’ve upgraded to full HD TV on my widescreen television display, the quality of the picture keeps me watching lots of crystal clear movies and television series. I seem to have more entertainment choices than ever before, and I’m not even renting that many DVDS!

    Vacation:
I’ve decided that if November ends and I have money in the bank, (instead of having to borrow to pay bills, as I have been doing all year), then I will definitely take a two week vacation in December. I plan on flying to Florida, and staying at the Animal Kingdom Disney World park for a few days. I’ve always wanted to go on an African safari, and the Travel Channel documentary I saw a couple of years ago on Disney’s Animal Kingdom looked really great. This costs money, however, and would have to be tied in with my bonus. I still owe my HMO almost a thousand dollars for my colonoscopy, and want to pay at least some of that off before the end of the year too. Right now this might just be a pipe dream, and I’d be going alone. Maybe I could visit some Xangans I ‘know” in Florida. I probably won’t be able to go this year, but I’m penciling it in just in case.

    Work:
I’d better get back to. It’s almost 7am, Monday morning, and last month I wrote over 60 quotations. Orders from those quotes are now coming in, and we’re exceptionally busy for this time of year. I’ll be dreaming about that Christmas bonus, and maybe that vacation.

  • Good Morning Mike
I hope this day your health (back) is somewhat improved. I have found with my many years of
employment that employers really don’t listen to complaints about our health unless they themselves have experienced the same thing or unless you come with a statement from your
    doctor.
You were missed I am sure and your vacation plans sound like fun…I am hoping you take that trip.
Good Luck on your Christmas bonus

  • you are missed! and your video is really cool!!

  • Some people don’t understand the concept of stars, either; some people seem to think that if they give one star, then as more give a star, the total will reach five!  I’ve had plenty of kind people give me stars in this way. It seemed ungrateful to correct them, and I don’t care to be featured, but I wonder if perhaps an explanation about this could be posted somewhere?  I was glad to see you make featured, as I know you have wanted it for a long time, and you certainly put enough effort on your blogs, even the “simple” ones!

Sorry to hear about the pain in the fingers.  It might be “just” a finger, but pain doesn’t care where it originates from!  I’ve been having terrible arthritis pains in my fingers lately, particularly the index fingers, and it is out of all proportion to the size of the digit!

Hope the vacation works out for you!  It’s nice to have something to look forward to for our labors.

  • I greatly disapprove of the growing health problems. Exercise and eat right and drink more water (Easy for a 25 year old to say, right?) I hope your financial stuff goes well. I really hate most banks because of the way they deal with closing down accounts and stupid finance charges like the ones you mentioned. What’s the deal? I had BofA for a while and have had two banks since then, before I finally went with my parents’ bank (and insurance carrier), which is great, mostly because they’re selective and only deal with military folk. Yay for being grandfathered into that one!
I’ve been scaling back with the blogging some, too. When I have something to write, I certainly write it, but as you’ve noted, I’ve been bad about visiting. And I have been favoring some over others, which makes me feel bad. I’ll tell you the truth, though, Mike. Your art is good stuff, but when I get on Xanga, I’m more in it for the text. I pay attention to everything you do, but I like the personal narratives the best.
Keep it up, and keep in touch Good luck with Everything!

  • I hope your back (and finger) gets better.

I was watching the Travel Channel (or was it the Discovery?) the other day and they had a special on about all of the different Disney parks.  They look so awesome.  Maybe that Christmas bonus will get you there?  That sounds like a fun vacation :coolman:

    take care,
    libby

  • Hi Mike,

Congratulations with the Xanga performance. 148 comments is a lot!! The day I get 148 comments…I will be worried over the world :)

Well done on crawling your way out of the financial trappings of a modern day life….I will however not recommend that two week vacation away. Rather huse the extra money to drop those debt values a bit more….take two days out and rest at your dwelling. I know it is tempting to go and you probably deserve a breakaway. But stick to one goal else one goal will sabotage another.

If you do not take my grand advice then at least make the most of it and really enjoy your vacation to its fullest.

  • OMG, so sorry your nerve problem is acting up again. Seems pretty unfair.

  • The star thing is goofy. If you hit the front page because of your stars, you get a lot of traffic. Then you get more stars, keeping you on the front page. Unless somebody torpedoes you on purpose. Damn them all!

  • Hiya Michael!

I’m sorry to read of your recurring back problem, especially as it relates to the use of your fingers. Fingers are quite important to such gifted bloggers/movie producers as yourself. I am very excited for you, though, that you’re getting on top of the financial monster. We have been so blessed to finally be out from under any credit card debt and back taxes! Now, we’re just working on a car payment and my student loans. :coolman:

Oh sure… you finally get a trip to Florida in the works, and I’m moving to Arkansas! Ah well, perhaps we shall meet one day anyways. :spinning:

    BE blessed,
    Steve :sunny:

  • I always enjoy reading your stuff. I am subscribed and get it via email. I dont come and give you a nice comment as often as I should.

  • random browsing. have you heard of a rhizotomy? i may have to go for one of those. docs find the nerve that is dead or misfiring and burn the tip of it.

  • Do I smell a potenial work lawsuit? *sniff sniff* maybe. Thats sad how work won’t cut you slack despite your pain. Not being able to use your hands is the worst feeling ever. I enjoy reading your post so don’t put it on haietus.

  • Keep up the xanga-ness.  And fuck those one star people.  I think your writing is terrific!

  • Mike, hope you feel better soon…i understand nerve pain, I got a tooth filled and i have had pain and numbness in my face ever since. I hope your finances clear up,at our age its tough when it happens…we dont have 20yrs to fix it,-( But then its only money! I hope that vacation works out, were hoping to go away for thanksgiving..our kids are either out of state or spending it w their in-laws. I feel this is a time to live like newlyweds. I know this sounds silly with the fact that we’ve been married almost 25yrs,-). Will pray for you

  • Sorry your in pain.  Good luck in the finances.  It takes a lot of discipline and will power to get out of debt.

Animal Kingdom was fun the last time I went.  Hope you are able to go.

  • I can relate to the consolidation loan fiasco…..been thru that wringer myself. Hope you get to go to florida, personally I can’t stand florida, but lots of folks do like it there. Everyone needs some R and R.

  • Ouch!  Those digital problems can really be a finger pointing or poking at you…or me.  Sorry, I couldn’t resist making the old pun.

I am going through some of the financial issues, but hopefully I can get the ship righted soon.  My problems really got together and threw me overboard when I had to get social security started early.  It still has taken over 3 months and it will start near the end of December.  Until then, I will still be struggling.

I try to visit your site about once a week since I am not working so much.  So, catching up this week was a little easier.

    Catch you soon.  Cyn

  • I am sorry to hear you have been having problems again. I hope that it gets better for you Mike…

I have been away a long time and am sort of, by degrees, ‘coming out of the Xanga closet’ again. You know, if there is anyone on Xanga that would know and not make me feel stupid its you. Mike. I was away for over a year. When I came back so much had changed. I spent today poking around Xanga trying to get a hang of all the new gizmo’s and gadgets that are here now. The stars. That is one of the ones I haven’t learned about yet. I understand what you get if you get five stars and the kudo’s for making the front page but how do I do it? How do I give stars is the question. Just click on them?

Write me when you have time and are not in pain.
    Brightest Blessings,
    Barbi

  • I will do my part to keep you at the top Mike! Stars all around!

  • how frustrating to be in so much pain. not being able to be here doing your thing has to suck! it sounds like you have a handle on your finances… now if your health would just improve! :) you haven’t had a vacation in a long time and the trip to wild kingdom sounds like a lot of fun! go for it!

  • New social networking place that pays its users!!!

OK you probably think this is a scam, but no, bare with me for a moment. What do you think pages like this do with the income they have from ads?…and they are making millions! There is this new social networking web page which actually pays a percentage of this money to its users. It will give you a share of this money depending on the page activity on your page. For example, you create a cool layout for your page, and make it public…so like 100people take a look at it. That will give you 100 or more page views, you can also refer people, and you will get a share of what they do as well! The possibilities are immense. Check out this link http://r.yuwie.com/hugoromano for more information and to sign up! There will be a short video explaining everything in greater depth. See how much money you can make! Have fun!

PS… Believe me, I wouldn’t be wasting my time writing this if it weren’t true…lol
