News and Notes
LABOR DAY HOLIDAY: I didn't "do" anything over the long holiday except try to keep cool. The mercury topped 100 degrees where I live, which is somewhat near the beach. It was pretty hot all over the southland. We're in the 7th day of our latest heat wave. The weather reports tell of cooling temperatures this week, so hopefully we'll get back to "normal". On Saturday afternoon, after battling an "ant war" in the living room instead of the kitchen this time, I settled in my comfy chair and we had a short brownout. I'm glad the power went on almost immediately. As it is, I have to position my 16" fan right next to the chair, and if I move slightly out of the fan's influence, I get blasted with 100 degree heat, so I need the fans. There were no sea breezes either, so going outside was not an option. I didn't have too much time to worry, however, after a few moments, the fan went back on. (I still don't use air conditioning. I don't want to become "part of a problem", overloading the electrical grid. Over 24,000 people lost electricity yesterday, but I wasn't one of them.) I feel like a traitor to the open car owners of America, though. Each time I went out during the long weekend, I had the top up and the ac on in the car. Usually I hate to see convertibles with their tops up on nice days, but I am not calling the weekend heat "nice". It was brutally hot, and I felt much better with the windows and top up and the a/c on!
UPCOMING ONLINE PROJECTS: I'm in a lull, not a "hiatus" but a period when I feel I've been on Xanga and the computer for too long an extended time, and I'm "resting" before starting any other projects. I rarely even signed on to Xanga over the weekend, and I'm just putting this entry up so there's something "new" since I haven't posted since last Thursday. With only 15 comments, I see that my not taking the time to visit other sites over the weekend took it's toll on my readership as well. Below is Part One of an older video I made in 1999 called "Nantucket Holiday". I have three of these "chapters' online on my YouTube account. The original video,on SVHS, is a little over an hour in length, and I began "digitizing" it in late 2006. So far the only video on Xanga is the one below. Parts 1-3 can be viewed from the link above. Soon I expect I will "finish" the online "webisodes". I stopped right before I got my latest video editing software, and I still need to digitize at least three more chapters. I took the vacation in Sept. of 1999. It's hard to believe it was eight years ago. If you haven't seen the vid yet in my Videos folder, here is Chapter One: The Calm Before the Storm. I arrived on the island of Nantucket right as a hurricane was scheduled.
In other video news, I've got to upload segments of the six Elvis movies I Tivo'd into the computer so I can begin assembling "Elvis Movies 3". Here is a link to ElvisMovies 2, which I put on YouTube in May of 2006. For "3", I'm including musical segments from "Viva Las Vegas" and "Kissin Cousins" among other films. I moved my "older" Tivo over near my computer workstation when I upgraded my DirecTV account last weekend and got a new receiver. So I should be able to input the segments pretty easily, and hopefully begin another round of "moviemaking". I'm also preparing a short video with the footage I shot at Griffith Park a month or so ago.
I haven't updated the main page to Allthingsmike since early July, so I need to get some new content announcements on the main page, and also update MikeVideo as well. I won't lie. The past two weekends I've mainly spent enjoying the wonderful sharp picture supplied by my HDTV receiver. I've been watching lots of recorded movies! I also finished the book I was reading (an old novel called "Peyton Place" by Grace Metalious), and I'm beginning the Harry Potter series this week. (that will be 7 books in a row, if I like the first one, which I will be beginning this afternoon after work.)
Before the summer is over, I do want to make a "video postcard" up in Hollywood, like I did with Ocean Blvd. in Long Beach in July and August. This is another year I haven't made it up the coast, but I didn't get my new camera either, and am still using the old 1.2 meagapixel camera in the videocam as my stills camera. I've visited some great Xanga sites with some fantastic photography, and each time I see sharp 5 or 6 megapixel photos online I cringe at my "blurry" 1.2 megapixel efforts.
WORK: Well, I'm at work, after the long 3 day weekend, and though I don't write about work that much, some negative things happened last week, which really soured my mood, and hopefully this week will be better than the last, and I'll feel more accomplishment. Even though I come to work at 5:30am, I had the top down this morning, because it's very warm outside. People are starting to arrive, so I'm going to get back in the swing of things, and finish this edition of News and Notes. If you're hot, like it is here, I hope you get a chance to cool off.

sounds like the heatwave is sapping your energy!!!! don't push! it'll cool off soon and you'll have a beautiful fall for a road trip or two. taking a small break from xanga may affect your readership, but i find that i need it once in a while to keep things in perspective! i figure that those who are real friends won't wander far.. and those that don't find their way back- oh well.... :heartbeat:

I don't know how you can stand not having A/C in the house. I am so grateful for mine. We never had it when I was growing up, or even as a young adult, but I certainly would not want to do without it now!
Just watched the video - great opening shot!
We do still have a few brick streets and sidewalks here in my small town, but I have never seen cobblestone streets before! Looks like the going was a little rough, but that has to cut down on speeding!
I enjoy Elvis movies myself. My mother thinks it's funny and my friends think it's cool. If you like Elvis- check out the movie Bubba Ho-Tep.

I really do hate to complain about the heat, because I so despise winter...can't complain all year long now, can I? I am glad to know I'm not the only one with ant issues. I was starting to think there was some sort of involved insect conspiracy going on here.
You only mentioned it briefly, but Harry Potter? Really? I hope you enjoy the first book and decide to read the others...book 6 was a bit slow, but book 7 more than made up for it! I started trying to read them to my kids, but may get it on audiobook instead and we can follow along. I used to do that with books on record (yeah, as in album...those flat, black, round things) and would love to share that with my kids.
Speaking of the kids, you're absolutely right. They should be responsible for cleaning their own rooms. And they are. What I failed to mention when I posted the Before/After pics of my cleaning prowess was the fact that their 3-year-old brother was responsible for the destruction in the photos. Most of the stuff (junk) lying about on their floors were toys they never played with and didn't even know they had. So I took it upon myself to organize...I had to do it while they were at school to avoid any interference. They've done a stellar job of keeping their rooms clean, their beds made, their dirty clothes brought down to the wash, etc, etc, ever since. And now that all the junk is gone, Jack won't be able to mess them up like that again...I still have nightmares!
Okay, I need to go make lunch. Try to keep cool!

I'm with you on the air conditioning issue. When no customers are here at the beauty salon we don't use air conditioning and it is warmer here in Burbank than it is in Lomita.
I'm sure you will come up with new material, it is the heat that saps the energy out of you though....
