  • I've Been Tagged: 7 random facts/habits

I don't usually do "tag entries", but I thought I'd try my skills at this one. Let's see, these kinds of entries usually begin with:

    tag1 I'VE BEEN TAGGED by Pat (trotta109).

Here are the rules (and right away I'll break one of them):

    1) People who are tagged need to share seven random facts/habits about themselves on their own blog. (Will do. Answers below.)
    2) Include the rules. (These are the rules, right here)
    3) Choose seven people to tag and include their names.  Don't forget to leave them a comment and tell them they've been tagged. (This is the one I always break. Usually, by the time I get around to playing "tag" the people who are interested in playing have already played, so suffice it to say, that if you are reading this and haven't played, and wish to, consider yourself 'tagged'. But I won't publish a list of profile names. I don't think that many people read this blog regularly anyway.)

HERE ARE SEVEN RANDOM FACTS/HABITS ABOUT MICHAEL F. NYIRI, POET, PHILOSOPHER, FOOL:

I think I've answered something like this in the past, but I'll construct a new entry, even if it might have some of the same "random facts/habits" as on any earlier entry.

    1. I would probably be a psychiatrist's dream patient. I'll self psychoanalyze myself right now, and say that I'm anal retentive, obsessive/compulsive, and manic/depressive, to name just three psychiatric conditions. At work, I've been asked in the past to 'seek professional help' concerning my 'mood swings' and tendency to physically slam my head into the nearest wall when agitated and upset. As I age, these manic/depressive mood swings have abated somewhat. I have never sought "professional help" for any of my "conditions." I like to have "everything in it's place". I develop "routines" that I adhere to religiously. When a young man in high school, I channeled my "suicidal tendencies" into writing poetry, which helped me to overcome any real or imagined depressions. I've always been a "neat freak" but am also very tolerant of other's wishes, which allows me to live with a roommate who is somewhat of a slob. We do "live" in different parts of the house, so I have my own "spaces".

    2. Over the years, people have always characterized me as "too serious", without a sense of humor, but I think I have a magnificent sense of humor.

    3. I don't "suffer fools gladly." I hate stupidity, ignorance, and uninformed opinions.

    4. The "fool" in my tagline, "poet, philosopher, fool" is not meant to mean I feel I'm foolish. I used to have the tarot card of "the fool" pasted to my bulletin board in my home office. The tag is from a quote in "As You Like It", a play by William Shakespeare, written in the 16th century. "The fool may thinketh himself wise, but only the wise man knows he is a fool."

    5. In high school, after I had "dropped out" of the Baptist Church, I "preached" that I was going to "found my own religion". Soon after, I had the epiphany which steered me on the course of writing about a "Universal Mind.", or pantheistic godhead. I cribbed the phrase from a Jethro Tull song called "Skating Away (On the thin ice of a new day.")  I've written both a personal spiritual history called "The Books of the Realizations" and about two dozen chapters of "The Universal Blog" which I update a couple of times a year. The Universal Mind is not only a pantheistic overall view of existence, but attempts to prove that almost everything discussed in most religious movements is related, and our "faith" no matter how disparate, is actually the same faith, and our gods, no matter how many names we might give them, are all the same God.

    6. I have been in physical pain for most of my life. Beginning with my birth, when I was born with a deformed head, according to reports from my now deceased parents, continuing through an auto wreck when I was 14 in which I broke my jaw, and compounded by a congenital defect in my left leg which caused me to have to have a hip replacement over a decade ago, which is now causing more pain than it should, and might have to be replaced in the future, I've been told by my doctors, then exacerbated  by a pinched nerve in my back, rarely a day goes by that I don't feel some sort of physical pain. This has inspired a series of poems titled "The House of Pain" which I began writing  back in college. I don't talk about this much, but I live with it. Days without any pain at all are heavenly, let me tell you.

    7. I'm  not afraid to die. I feel I've lived a purposeful, full, and wonderful life, filled with opportunity and joy, freedom of expression, and fantastic friendship. Lately, over the past three years, here on the Xanga service, I've made many more "internet friends." I've been touched by heartache and death each decade of my life, including the passing of my parents in the 70s, and two of my  best friends, one in the late 80s, and one in the mid 90s. I attempt to live each moment as if it were my last, and I'm touched deeply by the unexpected and tragic loss of life which occurs all the time. A quick perusal of the poems I have written this year gave me the distinct impression I've been obsessing about mortality in my poetry, but I think this is just a "fact of life" because I'm getting older.

Well, that's seven. Possibly I should have lightened up a bit. (I said my friends think I'm "too serious".) But there you have it. I guess number 8 would be "I don't do anything 'small'. This could be a criticism, like "I make too big a production" out of things, but I prefer not to think that way.

Thanks, Pat, for the opportunity to construct this blog entry from your game of "tag." I understand it was the first time you've been "tagged". Check out Pat's answers on her blog HERE.

EDIT: 6/29/07 5:30am pdt. I'm a bit upset. Last night, having returned from a most satisfying meal out with my roommate and friend Cancerboy. (Who sometimes doesn't have an appetite due to the many chemotherapy treatments he has to receive almost on a weekly basis) I signed into my Xanga and found that my Premium subscription has lapsed. Nobody alerted me via email like last time. I thought now would be a good time to sign up for Lifetime Premium, but I've been having troubles and can't sign up. Each time I fill out my credit card info and hit "continue", the screen shows me a "runtime error" and my transaction is not recorded. I've alerted "Chris" on the entry where I found the Lifetime subscription link. (It doesn't appear on my account info page, either, so I have to click a link fron "Chris's" site.) Until this is sorted out, my "Jukebox this Week" music selection, index, and links to my "Allthingsmike Universe" will not show up on my site, and an ugly "advert" is at the top of my page. My apologies. This is upsetting my anal retentive self greatly. MFN, ppf

FURTHER EDIT: 6/29/07 4:06pm pdt. I did something sneaky. I copied the HTML from my "custom module" and pasted it in the "javascript module" on my "look and feel" page, and the whole module has "come back". There is still an advert at the top of the page, and I haven't heard back from any of the "Xanga Gods" about why I can't seem to sign up for "lifetime" premium service. I noticed that I had "won" one of Dan's (the theologian's cafe) video contests a while back, and the "prize" was premium, so I found I had a message from him which I'd never answered, and asked him to add "premium" back in case it wasn't too late. Also, by a strange quirk of fate, I seem to be on the first "starred page" of Xanga and I'm getting hits because of it. So far, one friend request, but no comments. If you drop by from the front page and this is your first visit, let me know why you aren't commenting! (Nyuk Nyuk.)(Just kidding. I know. Page loads too slow. Too long of entries. Same ol' Same ol'. Thanks to everyone who got me there!!!!!!

  • This was only the second "tag" I've done (the other was "The Reading Meme"), but still, I couldn't quite do a list...

Anyway, this was a string of great illuminations. Any religion with spiritual text cribbed from Jethro Tull is deserving of, at least, a tax exemption.

  • RYC---As i've tried to point out to some silly little shiksta...most ART today is crap, and internet art is probably the lowest common denominator:mad:  Do you think Picasso could've thrived on YouTube

  • Terrific random facts!  Mine were much sillier.  Interesting that people have pegged you as too serious and without a sense of humor.  I never thought that of you at all!  I'm awfully sorry to hear about your constant pain.  I had no idea.  By the way. I love that Jethro Tull song Skating Away~

  • Dearest Mike;
I enjoying reading all the info about yourself
that you dared to share with us :goodjob:
I always found humor when there was meant to be
in your comments but you are a serious man. It saddens
me to read of your pain...for I as well live everyday with
a bit of discomfort. #4 I always wondered of this and I am glad
to read your reasonings :) You are a complicated Man Dear Mike
but I think that is most endearing and it was nice to pick up more
facts about the Man whom we have come to adore as "BaldMike"

  • I'm with you on three, man.

  • I don't think it matters what anyone has said about you in the past.  whether they are claiming you are too serious, as I have suffered this claim, or be it anything else about your personality.  to be terribly cliche, we are who we are.  I've thought a lot about your pantheistic ideas and struggle with them often as I try and live within the bounds of "Christian Thinking"  The greatest thing I find Christianity lacking is a greater tollerance for other religions.  My own reasoning and heart points me to a pantheistic, general sprituality, which speaks to the inate disire for humans to address their existence and to give credit to a higher source...  I guess that's just what makes sense to me.  For now, I call myself a sinner in thought, and remain Christian.

I like that you're a fool.  I never mistook the meaning.  I'm an aspiring fool, a  young fool.

  • Hi Mike, you have a lot of regular readers...there are always a few regulars when I leave a comment. I think it is always interesting to get to know you a bit better and to understand what makes the poet behind the poems you publish tick.

  • Michael,

Greatread, my friend. Every time I read something from you I feel like I get to know you better and better... and yet, never well enough. I'm going to read your personal spiritual history when time permits (perhaps tomorrow morning). I find myself deeply interested in your journey to Now.

    BE blessed!
    Steve :sunny:

  • I used to read Jung until I heard Jethro Tull.  Now I don't read anything.

  • Hi Mke!
Thank you so much for your words...
"Everything in it's place" it's an excellent philosophy of life!
I wander why is there always someone that want to cure us from... ourselves!
I was reading your posts here as I like it more than in the "Read your subscriptions" xanga page, until my computer crashed. Now it's after dinner but as I began to write a comment it turned to be too "private" so I decided to messaged it to you...
I like to see pictures a lot. I do like very much your tall flower between the trees, the Angel of Death and of course the roses as I too am fascinated by rose growing at " Flowers at the Huntington" but what a strange place to hang the Mona Lisa!
Also the twisted junipers at the Japanese Garden of Huntington and the roof reflected on the pound with a nenufar / lily.
I'm sure your devastating photographs at Griffith Park shall be as great as those from Huntington.
    Congratulations for your Third Xangaversary!
"I don't do anything' small' is definitively a quality!
    Isabel

  • I just re-read one of your comments... Of course I join your new blogring MikeVideo. I've already joined!
Sorry but I didn't understand you had a blogring for videos. The fact that I have difficulties on seeing xanga videos doesn't mean a thing...
For what I saw (and there were several on your YouTube site and also in Cultural Blender) your videos are great!
I'm going right now update my "Look & Feel" so your blogring show up!
    Isabel

  • You are a good man, Michael F. Nyiri, poet, philosopher, fool.  And, I think that you have a great sense of humour!

  • I found you randomly, but I enjoy you greatly.

    7 facts/habbits of mine:

1- I feel that it is impossible to sleep if anyone talks to me while I walk from my bathroom to the bedroom.

2- Out of all of my "band nerd" friends, I'm the only one that actually loves playing the french horn outside of band.

3- I spend a portion of every evening between 12 and 3 am sitting at my dining room table with 3 candles lit, writing poetry.

4- Peanut butter makes me hallucinate.

5- I fall in love with everyone (and not always in an amourous way) and feel highly disheartened every time I realise that my universal love is largely unrequited or at the very least, unnoticed.

6- My ambition is to never have what most people would call a "job," and persue a life of what most would call "impossibilities."

7- I wept quietly in the middle of my 10th grade English class the first time that I saw The Dead Poets Society.

  • It was just a matter of time after all!  This morning your site opened beautifully.  Some things internet I will simply never understand.

Your tagline is brilliant.  If your profile description had not caught my eye, this certainly would have.

Definately take the "small" remark as a compliment.

Pschiatrist's dream patient?  Empathy from my corner.

I have only scratched the surface of Mike thus far (you certainly don't do "small"!) but it is quite apparent that you do have a grand sense of humor.

  • Anal retentive or just detail oriented?!?  I like the 'fool' quote in #4!  Guess I'm just an old fool myself.  Have a great weekend!

  • Hello, there.
I really didn't think you were serious. I even thought you were the playful kind even when you had been exposed to the pains of life.
    Have a nice day.

  • Hi, Mike. Sorry I haven't visited in a while. Been too preoccupied with trying to keep my own fires burning. I've always known you were serious about what you do. But that doesn't preclude a sense of humor. I don't do memes like this because I'm just too damn boring and besides I'm the private type. Keep doing all that you do so well because it's very obvious you love doing it. You should be on Xanga's featured showcase every month.

  • I came from the featured page earlier ^^^ when I noticed you there right below me. It reminded me that I have neglected my commenting duties. I forgot to give you stars though, so I did that this time. Your page does take forever to finish loading. But then that's just because it is so packed with features and goodies... you belong on featured. I only barely belong on Xanga. I don't know who gives me stars but I don't feel I deserve them. It's nice, though, to be recognized sometimes. I was on there only once before in 4 years of doing this. Last time, I made front page and it pegged my footprints and site meter and I got almost 50 new subscribers and it generally made my Xangaing very hectic for a while.

  • Well, your list is certainly unique and interesting... other than having spent most of my life in pain we share many qualities, and I do like to analyze my own self. My dear mom told me I should have been a psycho... no wait, I think she said psycho anlayst (I can't even spell the word, so I doubt I would have been good at it).

Congrats on the premium, however you got it. Maybe Dan took care of it. Surely he did.

I voted for you many times.

RYC: I wish we could trade a bit of our rain. I noticed last week on national news that the fires in Cali followed the rains in Texas. It is almost scary. Some guy called into our local news station and said he thought they were promoting "Evan Almighty", the new movie with Steve Carrell. I thought that was pretty funny. I also think he was drunk.

Have a great weekend Mike. It is always good to hear from you.

    Hugs, Tricia

  • I honestly don't remember how I found you.  I think it was a blogring.

And you can always lighten up.  That's what diets are for.

  • Hey stranger,

I figured since I dropped by and read this, I may as well comment. A "tendency to physically slam my head into the nearest wall when agitated and upset"; is that some type of condition? Ah now that explains my friend!

As I've just stumbled upon your xanga, I don't know you, but from this, you seem to be a serious person, though not lacking a sense of humour.

    Have a good night :goodjob:

  • its funny how i can relate to how you describe yourself. :)

  • WHEW!  Hi Mike, I finally got here.  Went to Ohio to visit my relatives the first week in July and I have been off my usual schedule.  Anyway, loved your answers.  I have never met anyone who loves, loves, loves to write the way you do.  You know, some magazines pay by the word, but they probably couldn't afford you.  I love #7, that you have enjoyed freedom of expression.  You express yourself in so many different ways!  You are one of the true "Xanga Characters" who everyone knows and loves.  And you are not too serious because alternatively, you can be just as funny.  I think you are a good balance, you just have way more personality than most people.  We are lucky to know you.  Keep entertaining us.
