Photopost: Small Town America in Lost Angeles
It's been a while since I've done a PhotoPost. I haven't even taken any photos this year, and I plan to go "photo crazy" if I can afford a better camera with about 5 Megapixels or better this year. Back in 2004 I created the "Small Town America In Lost Angeles" photo series, which contians over 300 photos in five folders in my Webshots Gallery. Over the years, I've only displayed only about 17 photos from this series on the blog, so without further ado, here are some photos around the greater Los Angeles area which evoke what Walt Disney had in mind when he created "Main Street USA" for his Disneyland and Disney World Theme Parks.
We'll start our trip around "Main Street" in the L.A. area with a historic lamp post on the corner of Lomita Blvd. and Narbonne Avenue in Lomita, where I currently live. I always enjoy it when towns use older light fixtures, which give the place an air of history, something that is sadly lacking in a lot of areas in L.A.
This is a shot of "Old Town" Torrance, which is undergoing some gentrification, in order to make it a bit more upscale and attractive to tenants. Torrance is known for the large shopping malls on the westside, and old downtown, on the east side, became mothballed for much of the 80s and early 90s. Now there is an effort afoot to clear out the old hotels, build condos, and try to attract a more upscale clientele. This is a view from "John F. Kennedy Square", which is next to La Capilla, still one of my favorite Mexican restaurants near where I live.
A lot of the shops in old downtown Torrance are thrift shops, and I took some photos of in the display areas of some of the windows. I like the Tiffany styled lamp and the old telephone in this window.
I don't know if the large oblong fixture is a lamp or a hair dryer, but it evokes the sixties. Old clocks, a globe, and some collectible plates make up this window display.
This is Bellflower Blvd. in Bellflower, CA, where I lived with Pat in the early 90s. The "Hosanna" building, which is a Christian Revival house, used to be the single screen theater, and the building still retains some of it's former charm. Bellflower is another sleepy little town on the outskirts of the L.A. area, and it has similarly to Torrance, begun to revitalize it's downtown area, which for a while in the late 80s and early 90s, lost a lot of tenants to the malls and shopping centers.
This is the bandshell at Hollenbeck Park in East Los Angeles, one of L.A.'s first suburbs, and a place in which the film companies frequently film. East L.A. is where Liz lives, and I get up there about three times a month. This park looks serene from this angle, but a major freeway overpass slices the park in two.
Here is the police station in Highland Park, CA, where I spent the years from 1956 to 1960. This is also an early suburb of L.A., and is located in the hills north of the city. This area became one of the "bad areas" in the 70s and 80s, but has also seen a lot of gentrification, moving the undesirables out, and making the place fit for half a million dollar remodeled older homes, and a more upscale clientele.
The town in which my parents moved right before Dad died and Mom had her stroke, is Glendora, nestled in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains. This shot of Glendora Blvd., the towns main street, shows an ice cream parlor reminiscent of the "good old days."
You can see the San Gabriel foothills in the distance in this photo of Monrovia, another town which has revitalized it's Main Street. The photos of the foothill towns were taken on one of the hottest days of 2004 during the summer. I like all the greenery in this photo, and the neat parking sign.
Just the other day I was watching a movie where the principles went to a movie. The theater they walked into was the Warner Grand, which is located in San Pedro, which is to the south of Lomita, where I live. The theater is used for revivals. Most folks watch movies in multiplexes these days, but like a lot of the "Small Towns" in the L.A. area, some of the architecture is kept up, like the Warner Grand. The owners of these old buildings rent them out to the film companies. If you watch TV or movies set on the East Coast, a lot of times what passes as "New York" is really a street in downtown L.A.
This building is really a lighthouse. Look closely and you can see the light at the topmost part of the building. This is the Point Fermin Lighthouse, located in Pt. Fermin Park, right on the cliffs off San Pedro. Just recently refurbished, this lighthouse sits on the southernmost edge of one of my favorite parks. When reading this past summer, I could be found in my reclining beach chair under one of the many Magnolia trees in the park.
Lastly, here is one of the original Red Car trolleys, from the 20's, which operates up and down the coast in San Pedro, mainly a tourist attraction. But it is one of the real trolleys which used to canvass the Southland up until 1953, when business interests for the auto companies and the petroleum industry bought the Red Car line, and dismantled it in favor of our crisscrossing grid of freeways. Now that "gridlock" is a daily occurrance almost anywhere you go in the Southland, L.A. is building an ever expanding series of commuter trains and subways. Some of them travel on the old rail lines that the Red Cars used in the 20s through the 40s.
EDIT: 6:12pm pst. A lot of bloggers ask "questions" when they finish an entry, to give visitors something to think about when they leave a comment. I don't usually do this, however I once noticed that I got comments at different times on these photoposts mentioning the palm trees. I'm trying to evoke the "midwestern" rural main street feel in this series, but although I don't notice them as being strange, I guess a lot of folks aren't used to seeing palm trees. I'm pretty sure they only show up in places like California, Florida, and Texas. (I'm on the internet, so of course I did a search which confirms my suspicions. ) So here's the question.
Have you ever seen a palm tree before? (I mean, besides a photo or in a movie, of course.) Where did you see it, (them) do they evoke any specific emotions or thoughts in you?

This is really neat...I like this...different...as for my background I have had people tell me that there are one or two wolfs there...I have had others tell me it is on black background...when in fact it is on pale blue background...I have no idea where the other backgrounds come from...thank you for letting me know tho...I appriaciate it...have a good one...Smile

It's a hair dryer or at least was originally - my Mother had one like it and I remember her rolling my hair and my sitting under it ... the look was horrific but the time with Mom was priceless

palm trees.....Orange Grove in Pasadena...wonderful trek. Also, I think it was Thomas Edison's summer home(could have been Henry Ford but they were famous neighbors) in Fort Myers, FL...a beautiful double line of palms. Of course, I marvel when I've just flown into LA or Miami and the speed of flight which can put me into a whole different part of the world within a few hours. Simply marvelous! Thanks for sharing!
I always think of freeways when i think of LA... these were really cool pictures... taken neighborhood by neighborhood perhaps it is small town in flavor ,or at least in places....
I once lived in an area that was infested with palm trees. I was so glad when we moved to a palm-free part of the globe.

As a movie buff, anything that reminds me of Southern California reminds me of heaven on earth. Wax museums, Graumann's Chinese Theater, the record store where I obtained a recording of a Lux Radio Theater broadcast of "African Queen." Humphrey Bogart starred, but Hepburn was unavailable the night of the broadcast, so they brought in a ringer -- Deborah Kerr.
Thanks again, a million times, for the birthday tribute. You're a heckuva friend, and I admire your blogs beyond measure.
Yeah, that trick about asking a question. I'm sure it works. Dan the Theologian is who finally helped me figure it out. But I like getting 25 to 50 comments, and have no desire to get into triple digits regularly, so I think I'll keep not asking questions at the end. Besides the unwieldy numbers, I like to make friends with all of my regular commenters, and so there's a practical limit to how many comments it's good to get.
Oh. The answer? Palm trees used to remind me of Southern California, but now they remind me just as much of home. That is, we have palm trees in Florida, too.

For the palms, of course being born in FL I've seen them there as well as the scrubby low palmetto palms, like palm bushes. I believe I saw some palms in the lower SW area of Utah around Hurricane. Then there are some fake palms in Woodland Park Colorado out in front of the Dinosaur Exhibits. They are really neat looking when there is a lot of snow around them. Also I am so lucky to have a whole complete 10 inch section of petrified palm tree trunk that was found right here in Colorado. I have several smaller chunks but the trunk is a real treasure. There used to be a tropical forest here. Florissant Fossil Beds in the mountains by Cripple Creek has huge petrified wood stumps in the Ntl. Park. Some incredibly beautiful specimens can be found in the sandy areas of Colo. So being a rock and mineral hound, I have to say I love it.

Palm trees are a rarity here in central PA, but I've seen them in my travels. I was shocked to my shoes to find palms in Ireland! I didn't see that coming at all! Beautiful photos, as usual. I live in a crippled little town, but if I took my camera for a walk I'd probably find some beautiful shots. I'm certainly not the photographer you are, though . . .
Back in the 60's LA's smog was legendary. Probably aggravated by the car's company campaign to encourage car usage. But with Eisenhower's encouragement the Passadena freeway concept got the green light to expand...Truly some Angelinos Believe that The Passadena Freway was the forerunner of all Freeways, which we both love and hate.
Originally Palms grew in Palm Springs. Whoever thought of planting palms in Los Angeles probably was a real estate promoter. The recent frosts has damaged some of the palms (banana plants get really damaged)but generally most palms do well in Southern California. Unfortunately in Florida some of the palms are susceptable to palm diseases, which may strike California since Palms are at the upper reaches of its enviromental niche.
Looks like I will have to compete with you and try to do more photography of Los Angeles. I have a 5.0 megapixel camera but need to learn more photography tricks in order to keep up with the higher standards you have set....
very very cool pictures. I have seen a palm tree! In Florida and in Hawaii, I have never been to CA. I have cousin who lives in Anaheim though so maybe someday....
