  Internet Island Topic Post #19.00: "Back To School"

  
  

  Welcome to Internet Island Topic Post #19. I missed sending "announcement" comments to each and every Islander last time and we got 25 entries, mostly from new Islanders.  The previous post generated 32 entries, and for that one I contacted each Islander. I hope to get time to get around and let you all know that we have a new topic. Please note our new members which are listed at the bottom of this entry. Five sites have disembarked on the Island since the last topic post was entered. The Island is now populated by 132 blogs.

  In America it's Autumn again. The leaves are about to turn. The weather is cooling. The kids are back in school. Some of the Internet Islanders are back in school too, and haven't  been able to write topic entries because they already have too many books to read and too many papers to write. Let's think about education for a moment. Let's go back to school.

  
  

  
  19.01: Favorite (or least favorite) teacher. We all can probably instantly recognize the teacher or teachers who have made the biggest impact on us. Usually they teach not only the assigned subject in the curriculum, but they teach us about life, success, and the better part of humanity as well. Who was (is) your favorite teacher?   19.02: The Age of Information. We are bombarded with more technical, newsworthy, opinionated, and sometimes incorrect information than at any time in history. Or are we? The people living in the late 19th century were bombarded with telegraph and telephone, and early in the 20th century, radio, and then television appeared. Each generation has become infinitely more informed about their world, and it seems this world has gotten "smaller". Where do you think the information age is headed? Is the next generation any better off because of cell phones, computers, and narrowcasting?

  
  

  
  19.03: What did you learn in school? Write about the subject which had an effect on your life. Did you make any decisions in school about your life based on any particular class or mode of study? Is there any subject you wish you would have taken that might have steered your life in a different and possibly better direction?

  
  

  
  19.04: Recess. Take a break. How does one relieve the oppression of constant studying? What do you do, or did you do when in school to relieve the pressures. When I was at USC in the 70s, we had Frat Row on 38th Street, which afforded a lot of ways to blow off steam. If one wanted camaraderie there was the student commons, for privacy you could bury yourself deep in the library stacks. How about you?

  
  

  19.05: For the Teachers. Some of our "Islanders" are educators. Tell us your best "back to school story". Students which stand out. Classes which were more than interesting. Study guides you initiated. (Notice those aren't complete sentences. This is a test.) Faculty shenanigans. How about a short history of "education".   harliequin I live in Tupelo, Mississippi with my fiance Wayne Bishop. Wayne and I will be married on November 12, 2009. We are waiting till we are together for 5 years. I love him with all my heart and soul, 5 billion times 5 billion times infinity, to the farthest universe and back times infinity!!!!! I am addicted to video games and food and am currently trying to ween myself off of both of them. I recently joined a gym and I'm trying to lose weight so all I think about anymore is food and losing weight...it's kind of sad. I am a graphic designer at a place called SprintPrint. I love my job, but I sit on my butt all day and that doesn't help the weight factor . But I thought it was about time to use my $27,000 degree in Graphic Design and Multimedia. By the way, if you are thinking of attending Westwood College...don't. Go to a state school or something and get a better education for less! Anyway...I guess that's about it for now.
