  • “Five Years is But a Blink of an Eye”
    Poetry by Michael F. Nyiri
    September 11, 2006 6:18 a.m. pdt

It’s now been five years since that terrible day
So many things said, yet not much more to say
Feelings of safety and hope went away
Yes, the world changed, and seems getting worse

When illogic and fights replace reason
As has happened through many a season
The Earth receives a horrible lesion
And gallons of tears won’t wash away the hurt

Is humanity safer half a decade hence?
No, he has armed himself and built a bigger fence
As long as irrational bickering lingers, he is tense
Humanity still fights given the choice.

Did the silent screams of the dead go away?
Do those lives quickly ended give sway
to the pain and the sadness still lingering today
Did the end begin before the start?

I will grieve with those left behind and bewildered
A great burden has to be borne and shouldered
Brash rhetoric and useless promises are filtered
Will the truth ever cause mankind to realize his fate?

The zealots of faith continue to destroy the world
Killing and maiming in the name of God
Crusades are still mounted and thousands more die
    And nothing is ever understood
The pundits will rally around perfect hindsight
as the same mistakes are made and the
    same problems never solved
    Five more years shall pass
And five more, as the blink of an eye

An eye rubbed sore from looking at the carnage of calamity
An eye which never sees with clarity,
numbed and blinded by the mistrust and malady of consequence
An eye which sees death in it’s blink
We speak and we plot and we think
Five years ago our martyrs died in surprise
But methinks nobody is any more wise
    as the bombs still ignite
and the world fights for right
as wrongheaded fools lead the way

  • We will not forget.

  • Great poem!!!! Love that last line especially….

  • No matter how many times we watched it…we couldn’t make it UNhappen, could we, couldn’t make it be the nightmare it seemed.  It really happened.  And a piece of our collective souls died that day.

  • It was a defining moment in our history, personally and nationally, but we still can’t say exactly where it will end.

  • Just awesome, very touching.
We will never forget ~ how could we even begin to.

  • Cool man…Cool.

Thanks for approving me and for your compliment! :coolman:

  • Glad you are back…thanks for the comment

  • I like it! We certainly have seen a lot of illogic replacing reason these days, haven’t we.

  • Beautifully written. I hope to remind the world of the wonderful things that we can attain and did for a while in the aftermath. I know you’re a busy guy, but do me a favor and stop by for a visit today? Pray for peace. :heartbeat:

  • Beautiful picture….beautiful poem…..I will never forget….:heartbeat:

  • beautiful.

  • My eyes grow heavy as evening settles in,

Your words wear even deeper the dried stains of tears.

  • As always,  your poetry says just what many of us are thinking.  Thanks for sharing your words today.

  • It is hard to imagine that it has been so long. It all seems so fresh and painful.  I love your poem.  As always it brings the situation back into focus.

    Hope you are well.

    Hugs

P.S. Regarding your comment.  Please don’t misunderstand me.  I loved the topic.  I like having to take some time and think about how best to present my blog on each topic.  I know that you don’t put restrictions on them.  I love the Island and look forward to each new post.

    Thanks for all you do.

  • Yesterday was the birthday of a coworker of mine as well as the would be 52nd wedding anniversary of my grandmother and recently deceased grandfather.  September 11, 2001′s “Shoah” was, indeed, more tragic than Grandpa’s death, but the combined reflection and grief make both more powerful.  Grandpa was a fierce patriot and has inspired me to be more thoughtful when it comes to our country and its government.  You picked a topic close to my own heart with the new Internet Island prompt, and it’s one I actually thought about in another questionnaire thing last night.  This’ll be one I definitely participate in.  And given that I’ve only abstained from one or two, I think I’m doing A-OK.    All this to say that I’m back and ready to read and write actively again.  Hope you’re doing well.

  • I love your “First Day Of Spring” poem.I find your site very interesting and enjoyed it.I am more of a shallow thinker with an especially shallow post today…..I hope if you visit sometime it will be more rewarding than today would be…..Have a good day.

  • I love the poem. I also right poetry and my favorite thing to do is to decifer the meanings behind the words. That was easy woth this poem. The more I read the more I felt and remembered.

Even when we are beat down
We stand and up and fight
When we know with out doubt who’s
    Wrong and who’s right
    Then from out of nowhere
    In the deep dark night
We see a bright ray of hope
    In dawns early light
    Our courage and faith make
    our enemies take flight
    They see us coming
With a countries strength and might
    They preach hate and terror
    But our purpose shines bright

Freedom is our right, the soldiers are our might, United we all fight, We are all the light, sending them cowardly into flight, back into the night, Afraid of freedoms shining bright and unwavering light.

  • Beautiful tribute. Come and see me sometime. Judi
