  • Internet Island Topic Post #15: "Who are you?"

    Internet Island Topic Post #15.00

    WHO AM I  ????????????

    "He's a poet, he's a picker--
    He's a prophet, he's a pusher--
    He's a pilgrim and a preacher, and a problem when he's stoned--
He's a walkin' contradiction, partly truth and partly fiction,
Takin' ev'ry wrong direction on his lonely way back home."

"The Pilgrim Chapter 33":  Kris Kristoferson

    "Who the fu*k are you?"

     "Who are You": The Who

    "Mike Nyiri Takes Over"

Headline from an article in the student newspaper for Rosemead High in 1970 announcing the editorship of the paper for the coming year.

"I can swim through the rising waters of inconsequence,
Taking wrong turns and learning from these mistakes
When I arrive at the eventual destination, this will be
    inconsequential
it will have been the journey
    that matters, enhanced with experience,
And it will be remembered, as history should."

"Poet, Philosopher, Fool" : Michael F. Nyiri

    You are what you do.
I enjoy excelling at whatever I do. Whether I'm rushing to get a quote out before a deadline at work, a skill at which I'm particularly good, or composing a poem, creating a video, or designing a page for my website. Whether I'm chairing a meeting, rousing enthusiasm for a project, choosing from a menu at a restaurant. Whether I'm hanging a screen door, painting a landscape in the computer or painting a house. Whether this or that, I've got to do my best, be my best, and succeed with honors. Then I can sit back and marvel at the results of my labors. I am not a jack of all trades, but a master of anything that's tossed my way. I excelled at school subjects. To get a B+, as I did in Physical Education, was anathema to me. I am defined by the things I can accomplish. In fact, I'm somewhat ashamed I can't do more, live more, and be more. There were some times back in the 80s when I got a bit drunk or whacked out of my mind on some drug (let Mikey try it first. See. Mikey LIKES it.) that I , like Kristofferson's Pilgrim, became a problem when stoned. But for the most part, what I do is of a postive nature.

    You are what you eat.
I'm getting fat. My ex girlfriend Pat used to call me her "fat man". It's only a beer belly. But it defines my appetite, which is voracious. I can eat healthy. I proved that when I was diagnosed with high cholesterol, and perscribed Lipitor. Since I abhor the practice of taking pills regularly, owing to my parents' chock full medicine cabinet when I was growing up, I started exercising and eating foods that were low in cholesterol. Gone went french fries and biscuits and gravy. Scrambled eggs. Fried chicken. It worked too. I didn't need to take the Lipitor. I only eat one meal a day, and I know, especially at my age, that I should actually eat three smaller meals instead of splurging on a four course feast every day. But I love that one meal. It's usually the high point of my day.
And I'm sorry. (Well, no not really.) I do enjoy my beer. These past few weeks have been incredibly hot, and I've been knocking them down like iced teas. I know that I should in fact be drinking iced teas, but as I always have said, I like beer. (It makes me a jolly good fellow)

    You are what you wear.
Bolo ties and cowboy hats. Snakeskin boots and collar studs. Lots of turquoise and really big silver belt buckles. I've worn western wear since 1st grade with no irony. I remember when the "Urban Cowboy" trend spread, however, I didn't want to wear what was in "vouge". Back in the 80s, I was the 'button man', hanging out at the music clubs on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood with my late best friend Tom. My cowboy hat was festooned with buttons, poker chips, cards, and a little license plate on the back that read: Mike. I wore a red velvet coat festooned with even more buttons. I looked a bit like a clown, and I was easy to spot. Friends never lost me in a crowd.
    I like to stand out.
In about 1968, when I was in high school, a relatively conservative establishment of learning in Rosemead, California, one of my pairs of pants ripped down the seam of the leg. Instead of throwing them out, I had my mom, who loved to sew and made a lot of my sister's clothes, sew a triangular shaped floral pattern in the outside of the two legs to make the pants into bellbottoms. By my senior year, I was characterized in the yearbook by my "eye popping outfits".
Now I'm a bit older, with that paunch, which I cover real well with snap shirts. I don't particularly want to stand out anymore. I'm a bit more laid back. I finally threw all my old bellbottoms (and my extensive collection of "disco clothes" from the late 70s, including 5 inch platform boots) away in 1990.
At work in the 70s and 80s, though, as a manager for "big box" retail chains like FedMart and Target, I wore white shirts, slacks, and a tie. (And that little red vest) I still have a lot of ties. I don't think I've seen too many people wear ties lately.
    And hats.
I have a cap or a hat for any occasion. Now I use them to cover my bald pate in the sun so I don't burn but I've always had a hat on my head most of the time when I'm outside.

    You are what you experience.
    I've been around.
I'm getting up there in years and I'm still a "bachelor" with no children, so I remained a child as long as I could, and I have travelled as much as I can, and played as much as I dare. I haven't been "all over", but I have been as far away as Nantucket, Florida and Toronto. I don't watch much "television", but I've always collected movies and television shows on tape or disc, (as soon as they invented home video, that is.) I call myself a 'student of popular culture" and besides studying English Literature in college, I studied theater arts, film history, philosophy, and sociology. I'm still "studying" thanks to the internet, which allows a smart searcher to just about find out anything about anything. (There's also a lot of "hearsay" and bullheaded irresponsible opinon on the net)
Throughout my life, I have been defined by my surroundings and by my tastes in culture and society.

You are what you think. Are you what others think?
I would be lying horribly if I said I don't care what others think. In the long run, I probably don't, but it is well known among my cronies that I love a "pat on the back" for all those great things I'm able to accomplish back up there in my initial paragraph. I can see all sides of any question. I can moderate and usually find the "common sense" in all things. I think I'm a nice guy, farily intelligent, with a grasp of the fundamentals of life and the hereafter, which I embrace (without morbidity it is hoped) My friends sometimes think I'm a bit of an insufferable asshole who they wished would shut up. On one thing we all agree. I like to talk. A lot.
Hopefully some of the things I say are of value. In the end, everything is relative, and we are who we are irregardless of what we or anybody else thinks.

The hat I am wearing is my "button hat", a bit dusty and worse for wear, but still servicable. I just got it down from it's place on top of one of my bookcases. There used to be more poker chips and some cards in the hatband. The photo immediately above comes from a 1986 VHS video and shows the button hat and coat.

  • Darn it, why don't you live close enough for us to hang out together?  We could go out for a beer, and that would be a good thing for you because I don't like beer so you could have mine.....

And you might have noticed in one of my earlier posts about how I didn't ever want to dress 'en vogue' either.  I still don't!

Good times here with you, Mike, and thanks!:coolman:

  • this was just a delight to read, with all the personal details- though the one meal a day kind of worries me it obviously makes lipitor not necessary.  And your hat first photo is just great and my favorite.  I'm with you on really not caring in the long-run what anyone thinks.  But my favorite sentence is "I like to talk. A lot".  Thanks for this blog and for the topic Mike. -Old girl

  • Hey Mr. Mike!

Great Post. I love the picture of the button hat. I don't like to dress "en vogue" either, but my parents love to push it. I'm actually a pretty picky dresser, never really realized that. Hope all is well and thank you for the wishes on my trip, I'm sure it'll be fun.

    Peace out and take care.

  • I think this is one of my favorite posts of yours Mr. Mike. An interesting read. Did you know that my dad always wore bolo ties too? Interesting. I really like how you're a straigh shooter. I had some slight trepidation about this topic because, after all, isn't that what a blog should be about? Describing yourself? But, alas, a lot of times it is not...I'll take a stab at it here in a few (hours, days...I'm not sure). Always know that I really enjoy your site, even if I don't comment and only read it from my subscriptions. I catch most of it eventually...and I'm not surprised to hear you like to talk a lot! Best, Miriam

  • Mike

After reading your post I have a strong suspicion that you have a much better grasp of who you are than any of the rest of us.  As always, I thoroughly enjoyed your post.  You have lived a full life and continue to grow as  a person.  I am personally glad that you are here on Xanga and sharing your thoughts and feelings with us.  We are better for it.

    Hugs

    Kat

  • Hey Mike!  Thanks so much for sharing all you do here with us! I think you are a great and highly intelligent gentleman! :goodjob:  I wish you the best always!

Hope you have a great weekend!!  ((Love & Hugs))

  • hi Mike! I just thought I'd introduce myself, since I am new to InternetIsland! you should know a little about me from what I said in my request to join, but I'll do it all anyway.  My name is Laaysa.... I'm 18 and from Washington DC.  I'm a trained dancer, and i love it more than anything.  I love writing too, and I've kept a hand-written private journal since I was 9.  Im also a bit of an Internet geek, but aren't we all on here???

I'm not quite sure how this InternetIsland thing works, but I'm learning.  it looks really interesting, and I'm about to go reply to the current topic.

your post was a really enjoying read!

  • you do get the brain cells moving!  Thanks for the challenge. oh... and love the hat!

  • I think it would be a luxury to not care what others thought of me.  I have not achieved completely in that field, but do seem to do better than some.  I enjoyed the "you are what you wear"  when I was in high school, my style changed everyday.  Even now, as an "adult" (and I use the term loosely) people at work love my outfits, I don't have a lot of money, so I am ALWAYS in the thrift shops, and yard sales, no one ever has what I have!  "you are what you eat" I eat two meals a day, big lunch, small dinner, then I drink long into the night.  I am not a beer person, but hard cider, and assorted liquor.  I work in a pharmacy, I can understand your aversion to pills.  Very sad when people have to take 5-10 different pills to be "balanced" or "healthy"  As far as the different drugs etc, I also was the one who got to be first.  I never complained though.  Luckily that part of life seems (for the most part) to be over.  Hard waking up, not sure where you are!! Now I am a "respectable" married woman.  I love to talk also, and obviously love using quotes.  I am a fan of self sarcasm.  I do not do well with "grammar", although I can if necessary.  I enjoy reading you very much.....

  • Mike, I missed it when you put up the topic....I enjoyed your entry...it seems balanced and very honest both telling a bit of your strengths and weaknesses. I will try to put up a reply over the week-end and then go surf all the internet island and see who is living on the island.

  • Michael,

Whoa! I was just thinking about this topic, and here you have most excellently shown the way. :coolman: I love the pics... and the hat. Most shiny, my friend! I got your info in the comment you left me, and I shall email you in a bit. :sunny:

    BE blessed!
    Steve

  • Dear Mike, I have posted on topic 15. Cheers

  • It was hard for me to respond to your words at first. It's just an extension of you are, and none of what you wrote was surprising, given everything else of yours I've read. As for the "insufferable asshole" bit, a vast majority of my friends are that. I love strong-willed, individual people, and I've noticed that it's those people I prefer to spend my time with. I think the part of this I liked best was the part about your hats. You have one for most every occasion? I would love to become a hat person. I've almost tried to make it a goal of mine several times... but I'm a hair person instead. When I cut my three foot tresses, I will begin some serious hat searching. Right now, the only hats I wear are those of goofy best friend, modest and easily shocked older sister, giggly nouveau-stoner, aloof biting writer-philosopher, and lover. And I dig 'em.

  • Cool post. Makes me think of The Breakfast Club and the paper that they had to write about 'Who you think you are'...and Anthony Michael Hall's character clipping the pen on his lip and saying "Who are you...who...are....you" lol.

  • I enjoyed reading this one.:)
You are an amazing guy. I like the hats! my hubby finds hats and buys them, then gives them away to people that say they like it

Keep exercising!! it allows us to enjoy the bad things now and then.
    :fun:

  • I enjoyed reading this.  Gave me more insight into your ever-changing personality.  Lead on!

  • You are a very interesting man. That's who you are. :lookaround:

  • RYC: Actually I saw that you were nominated yesterday. I don't know what happened ,but the whole thing is silly. My daughtwer voted for me, I mean really, it's not like we really win a prize. Your site is wonderful and those who apprciate it, are smart. besides, both your posts, your video blog, and your FG post were on the top of boost, and dan's wasn't nor did I see DMV. Yes, i shamlessly self promoted myself, but honestly it's not that important to me, those who like my blog do, and those who don't don't. It's not like I'm getting paid. Now if I wrote a book, I would want lots of people to read it and buy it, with no bad reviews ha ha. It's just xanga.

  • Soooo..., we get to know who you are. Awesomeness. I like beer too, shhhhh.... don't tell anyone. I use to get lectures from my mum, but now I get them from my son. What irony.
RYC: I agree with you about the short stories, but I have never been good at it. A Xanga friend, MixedupMale, suggested a topic, because we both love Jim Croce. He said we should write a short story based on the song Operator. I have been thinking about it.
Thanks for all your wonderful feedback. I am sorry I haven't gotten by more often, I love your hats, remember me, "the wearer of many hats".
Thanks for dropping by, and for the props.
    Tricia

  • Mr. Mike,

thanks for stopping by. You know I try to write on the topic when I can, and if I don't then I let you know that I won't be writting on the topic. However, if another topic appears within the next two-three weeks. I'll probably be a little late in getting a response back to you b/c I'm going to be on the road with no computer! Shocking I know . Peace out and take care.

    Autumn

  • Well Mike I think you know yourself pretty well! You've articulated very well your characteristics and what makes you "tick."

Thanks for your comment on my last blog. I did think twice about posting this one, but I felt so strongly on the matter I just had to do it.

  • Thanks so much for your comment.  I'm sorry to hear that it looks like you won't be reviving Electric Poetry.  For a moment I could feel my heart beating a little faster.

I like the format you've shared for "Who Am I?"  I may follow your lead for an entry on the topic.

Hope you are having a lovely summer, my friend.

  • :sunny: I adore this post! It's fabulous! Thank you for your wonderful comment on my site. I am honored to have the opportunity to begin sharing myself with such esteemed cohorts! I look forward to expressing AND making friends. Thank you for the links also. Very enjoyable. I'm all excited about the possibilities here! [OH! And for a more philosophical post on who I am... http://www.xanga.com/ItalianGrotto/500159066/what-is-my-true-identity.html

  • A beer belly, huh?  I have a belly, too, but I don't drink beer.  Guess mine is just from food.  I only eat one main meal a day.  I have a banana for breakfast, a yogurt for lunch, and our main meal around 4.  My problem is that Ken likes to hae goodies around, and I eat too much junk in the evening.  I also spend way too much time sitting at the computer.

Pretty well knew you from reading your blog over the last couple years, but there are always new little tidbits coming out here and there.  This has been a great topic.  Have learned so much about so many people!!
