"Song About A Man I Know"
    Poetry by Michael F. Nyiri
    © 1971 (18 years old)

    Lovers little stranger
    Sitting by the roadside
Hoping all his dreams come true.
    Making up his fantasies
    Wallowing in worries
Not much more can turn him blue.

    Lover's little stranger waits
He knows he's just a little late
He tries so hard to understand his fate.

    Lover's little stranger
    Sitting by the roadside
Flashing back his life of old.
    Making ups his fantasies
    Wallowing in worries
Not much more can make him bold.

Tried but true's too good for him
His heart is strong but not his whim
He spends his time alone all feeling grim.

    Lover's little stranger
    Standing up so rightly
Trying hard to make a start.
    Throwing away fantasies
    Still he stands with worries
Not much more stands in his heart.

    Lover's little stranger cries
He waits a while then dabs his eyes
He lives with all his hows and whys.

    Lover's little stranger
    Sitting by the roadside
Waiting for good luck to break.
    Making up his fantasies
    Wallowing in worries
Not much more can stranger take.

"Hand Made Down Ma's Waking Pains"
    Poetry by Michael F. Nyiri
    © 6-11-83 7:45 p.m.

I'm feigning my conversations wherein my
    mirror image listens attentively
    to my rambling passages
    and corrects papers
while I fu*k convention in the other room

    boats in the night
    pass interminably silent
shortsighted stumbling blocks out the sun
    of
    God damned irrationality

    Communication with an answering machine
    is difficult at best

    "Newspeak"
    Poetry by Michael F. Nyiri
    © 7-21-83 3:58 p.m.

    To paraphrase
    All the world's a page
    And all the participants
    Merely tired words
    Words with dog-eared meanings
    illiterate alliteration
    useless musings

No need to read unwritten meanings
    in these words
No need to read solace or rage
    Merely turn the page

    "Whittle Away A While"
    Poetry by Michael F. Nyiri
    © 7-21-83 4:35 p.m.

    Let me teach
    each of you
    all I have learned
    Exceed riches in ignorance
    all duly earned
Cynical legions respond with a cheer
    What will be left, friends
    when I exit here?

    "TGIFexistence"
    Poetry by Michael F. Nyiri
    © September 17, 2004 : 5:56 a.m. pdt

Life is a week, reap what ye seek
    Monday is awareness and play
    Tuesday responsibility
    Wednesday assessment
    Thursday regrets and dismay
    Friday fulfillment
    Saturday sublime realization
    Sunday life passes again
    For
    Monday looms over the horizon

    "the dust of time"
    Poetry by Michael F. Nyiri
    © September 21, 2004 : 6:33 a.m. pdt

    the dust of time
    layered archeologically
on the flat surfaces of secluded serenity
    unseen until a breeze blows
    unheeded until observed
    days and weeks and years
    unnoticed until we choke
    sneezing blowing yet never placated
    settling somewhere else

we can dust the time away
    blowing bowing breezing
    time's duster
whirls the motes within the light
until they stop in the air
    and then settle
    in another place
    to rest in time awhile

    the dust of time
    never ceases this layering
    this incessant playing
    these whirling manifestoes
    of existence
    and time's duster
    cannot clean the surfaces
    so the motes swirl away
    until another day

we can dust the time away
    but the dust of time
like the sands in the glass
like the clouds in the sky
like the cells in our bodies
like the stars in the heavens
    accumulates and advances
    choking with missed chances

    the dust of time

BEHIND THE POETRY: "Song About A Man I Know" is a song I wrote in high school. "Hand Made Down Ma's Waking Pains", "Newspeak", and "Whittle Away A While" are all new transcriptions of poetry written in 1983, when I was 30 years old. I was sober during this time, and had lost a lot of my "party friends" and was somewhat alone during this period. I had so many relationships in the late 70s, and then almost none during the early part of the 80s. The phrase "All the world's a page" is a bastardization of "All the world's a stage" from Shakespeare's "As You Like It." The last two poems are from 2004 and have been featured here on the blog before. Although I do like to write more positve poetry nowadays, with age and wisdom in my corner, I have spent a lot of time in my life feeling alone and adrift in this life without a rudder, and a lot of the poetry of the 80s reflects this. The photo in the header is one of my own.

  • I like the play in "The Dust of Time," but my two favorite poems this time are shorts - "Newspeak" because of its clever words, but with meaning (I relate too well - it's my passion), and "Whittle Away a While."  I love the second person, the meaning, the cadence and rhythm play.  My love and I are going to see Superman tonight.  I'm excited because I love Spacey, and the blatant religious symbolism will be fun.  Steve's a sucker for comics and action and the purity of the old ways.  He'll have fun discussing the philosophy of it when we're done, too.  Batman's still his - and my - favorite.  He likes him because Batman is a "reactionary force" and because he's completely human.  Superman, of course, is an amazing myth and worthy of admiration and adoration as well.  I'm sorry to hear about Liz's loss, although I'll concede that losing a bad tempered dog must be much easier than losing a precious jewel like the one she had before.  Blessings either way.  And now... to craft a post.

  • I like Newspeak as well it speaks to me especially 'dog-eared meanings'....and your ElectricPoetry image is wonderful.  B&W is so powerful!  ryc- yes home base is Canada though the Turkey home is becoming home rather than house.  Take good care-g

  • Dear Mike,

I guess sometimes we do need to get it all out, especially if it's something in you that's been there for years.

I'm glad you like my foot, I always thought they were ugly but the response I got from people have been quite favorable. I would like to to pursue a life as a foot model but I feel that I'm too old for that. Perhaps in another life.

Yes my you tube references have only been on stuff that is already on there and that I can relate too. I'm really not anywhere near as talented as you are, as a writer or as a director. It hink your work is fine and wonderful and quite original. Hard for me to link for it since it is your work and I don't quite connection to them, but should ever one hit a spot for me, I will gladly link it (with your consent of course)

Yes I heard the word from Liz's site, I was happy to hear it. As we get older it gets harder to get brave...well perhaps you may be the exception. In any case Liz is lucky to have you in her life by any means.

    Take Care of yourself Mike

  • Great writing. ryc; As far as 'end ifs,' they seem to only occur in IE, I use Mozilla Firefox-they don't show there. I prefer Firefox over IE any day!

  • that is ABSOLUTELY THE coolest thing ever.
    THANK YOU!
    Thank you, thank you!
You've renewed my faith in mankind!

  • I like the last one best:)

RYC: I have no idea why it's taking up so much room - I need to figure that out

  • Heya Michael,

You write some awesome stuff... "loves little stranger" and "the wreck of Sexperus".. haha methinks you doth protest too much ... but I understand what would make you think of me, I think.

  • Okay, I really love poetry, so I am not going to read them all in one setting. My favorite one for today is Newspeak.
Line "Illiterate Alliteration", alliteration, assonance, sarcasm, irony, internal ryhme, almost oxymoron, but not quite, and meaning all in one line. I love it.
I am not much of a writer, but more of a reader, my son however has picked up a love of writing about which I am thrilled. His teenage angst, and dark writers morose, I don't know if I can stand, but I guess it is all part of the parcel.
I will come back tomorrow for part two.

  • i would like to sound worldly and knowleagable, but i cant.  i very much enjoyed reading this post. i am going to subscribe, i hope that is okay,  i really enjoyed "Hand Made down Ma's Waking Pains"  i think i am going through losing all my party friends.  Unfortuneatly (sp) i have not sobered up yet..

  • I thought about that you are what you eat thing, and I drink a lot of diet pepsi, but ya don't "eat" beer now do ya? :)
I like to say "I worked hard for these hips" LOL! :)
(Not just what I eat but birthing 3 babies)
Thank you again for lifting me up today. I appreciate it SO much!

  • thank you for leaving such a kind comment.  it is rare to meet people on this site who do that.  i am very glad to have subscribed to a real person.  i tried to e-mail this to you, but could not, so i will leave it for all to see.  thank you again...

  • FYI: Just between me and you, I teach the Desiderata every year, so yes, that was an allusion to the poem, not a copying of the poem. It is most excellent, and if you look back far enough in my post you can see the grumblings of some of my students for making them learn this poem, yet they remember..., huh???? Must not be too bad.
    Hugs, and thanks,
    Tricia

  • I especially like Newspeak. ryc: Thanks for sharing the inspiration poem Mike.

  • *wistful sigh*  How I miss Electric Poetry.

  • Dear Mike

First off thank you for stopping by my site.  It is always great to hear from you.  I haven't had much time for Xanga recently.  I have been most excited and then busy with work.  In answer to your question -- I am feeling fabulous.  The doctors have done all sorts of tests.  Even my heart seems to have reversed.  They say that it is no longer enlarged. LOL  I don't know how to explain it but I am just taking one day at a time and enjoying them.

As usual you astound me with your poetry.  I especially like the first one.  I have known people like that and have probably been there myself at times.  It seems like we all spend way too much time worrying about what we don't have rather than appreciating what we do have.  I wonder sometimes if I have spent so much of my time looking for that one person to love me that I have never seen the ones that did. LOL  I sure hope not.  Either way I have decided to enjoy what time I have here on this fine planet.  No more ranting at the fates.

I will post on this topic today or tomorrow.  I like the topic but need to ponder how best to answer that question.  Who am I.  HMMM That is a tough one.

Hope that you are well and happy.

    Hugs
    Kat
