  • PhotoPost: Universal City

     photopost

So far this year, I haven't been out on too many Photo Excursions. I'm still planning the Pacific Coast Highway series, of which I did post a few images on February 11.  I created my Video Blog #1 last Saturday while snapping some photos for the PCH series. Also I and Liz haven't gone out that much this year so far. The last couple of times we've spent time together has been watching movies at my place or just going out to dinner. A few weeks ago Liz expressed an interest in going to City Walk, which is the colorful "mall" right outside of Universal Studios in Burbank, north of Hollywood. Since the studio theme park is right there, I suggested spending a day at Universal Studios, finsihing with a meal at one of the restaurants on CityWalk.

A typical "tourist shot" of me standing in front of the Universal Logo right before the entrance to the park.

The CityWalk "mall" was created as an "urban center" complete with shops and restaurants as an adjunct to the popular theme park at Universal Studios. There is a CityWalk in Orlando and at Universal City. (Universal Studios is not in Hollywood, but in an unincorporated area of L.A. near Burbank) Here is a view looking toward the entrance to the theme park. King Kong had been hanging from that building since CityWalk was built, and is not an ad for the recent film.

This shot shows some of the signage at the eastern part of the mall. Your eyes can almost overload on the amount of visual information they are given while walking along the mall street.

When Ang Lee's "Hulk" debuted here a few years ago, the cartoon superhero made an appearance above the ticket booth of the movie theater complex. He's still there, although his movie tanked. Ang Lee is up for a Best Director Oscar this year for his current film, "Brokeback Mountain". Since it's a Focus Feature, there was no mention of it of course at Universal Studios.

Sparky's Candy shop has the flavor of a candy shop of the 1930s. All kinds of Pez dispensers are presented in the window display.

This is one of the themed sections of the actual theme park at Universal City. This one is the "London Street". Parts of "Nob Hill" were filmed here.

A little bit of Paris in Universal City.

You can pose for photos with King Kong, who is "life size" and towers above the crowd. He doesn't move, however, and you can't pose in his hands, which was sort of disappointing.

Speaking of posing, here is another "tourist shot" of me with Marilyn Monroe after she finished shimmying on the hood of this classic Oldsmobile.

I can never get enought of the Universal Studios backlot tour, which weaves it's way through the only remaining backlot in the Hollywood area. Here are some facades on the "New York Street". Even though the tour has been a tourist attraction since the 1920s, they still film movies and television shows on the lot. In 2001 I sat on the right hand side of the tram and shot the tour on video, and yesterday I sat on the left side and shot some more video for a "Universal Studios" MikeVideo I've been planning for years. Now I have the "other half" of the tour to present.

Here is Liz right after we got out of my car and walked across the pedestrian bridge to the beginning of the CityWalk complex. She is using her digital camera, which has a new 1 Gig memory card which allows her to shoot over 1000 still photos or almost an hour of video. Below is Liz's first "published video" on the YouTube service. Click the little "play button" to see the video, which is really rather good. You can visit Liz's Xanga site, "The Queen of Swords" and comment on the video HERE. As usual, if you click on the photos, full size versions will appear in another browser window.

  • Mike,

These are some great pictures, and thanks for the links to my video. It was fun to make, and now after this I'm not that interested in creating that music video for the contest. I'm in the mood to create my own projects out of music I like and my own video and photos.

It was a lot of fun going with you to Universal, and by far my favorite pictures are those of Citywalk - just because there is so much "stuff" in them. I'm just glad you were there while walking through that Mummy maze ... spongy floors ... they're just wrong. I'm assuming you will be making a video soon though, especially because I looked at the film you got of that crash scene.

It was a great day, and a good break from our busy schedules as well.

    Love,
    Liz

P.S. And thanks for the honor of "LizVideo" :)

  • I recognized some of the movie scenes in Liz's video. It was neat.

I didn't especially appreciate the music it was set to, but to each their own.

  • Dear Mike

The pictures are awsome, this is one of the most enjoyable blogs I have read from you, very simple, charming and gave me a true taste of the real you, that I haven't seen in a little while.

You and Marilyn make quite the  nice couple.

On some other news I wrote a long blog for one of the internet island topics. Sadly I hated it, so I deleted it. Lately my writing has been putrid, and I'm putting that kindly.

I will unsubscribe fromt he internet island for the time being, not because I don't like it, but because I'm unworthy to be part of it at this time.

I will however keep you on my list, aside from my being interested to read some of your blogs and know of your well being, I may occasionally contribute to an internet island topic.

    Best wishes

    Frank

  • You figure that I would know enough by know to know how to spell awesome, I don't know if it's deep root of pure laziness but my writing is really disapointing to say this least.

  • Thank you so much for dropping by my place. :) That poem was most beautiful and again I thank you, that was so thoughtful and kind of you. This is a fascinating post, I very much enjoyed it and I see you have tons of things on the side one can click on. I hope you don't mind if I spend a wee bit of time at your place kinda browsing around. Have a wonderful relaxing Sunday,

  • Mike, I always like to go with you on your photo shoots. I should start doing the same thing by taking more photo's here in South Africa. My favourite photo in this batch is the Universal Studios backlot.

  • It figures, you write the most insightful, verbose comments on my bloggie and all I can think of to write is, "nice pictures."

    Nice pictures.

  • i love your travelogues- they connect me w/places i've only read about or seen in movies and somehow you make them real! more!!! you and liz need to have more dates so i'm kept in viewing material! *grinz!

  • hmmm left a comment and got kicked out

I like this Mike! I get caught up in staying in my own space too ... this has motivated me to plan to go seek some new sites

  • Oooh!  Oooh!  Palm trees!  I love palm trees!

It looks like fun...did you have a good time?  The mall concept has been built here, too, although perhaps not quite so intrigueing, and also it's not nearly as much fun to trudge down all the "streets" when there's a snowstorm, and/or freezing temps!

    Enjoyed your pictures very much!

  • Loved visiting Universal Studios vicariously through your pics and Liz's video.  The back lot tour reminds me of the back lot tour at Disney World.  Have never been to Universal.  Now I almost feel as though I have!!  Thanks for the fun trip!

  • Thanks for the tour.  Barbara and I once enjoyed a relatively private tour of Universal Studios in Orlando.  Relatively private means the park was closed to all but those of us attending the North American Veterinary Conference.  Maybe a thousand of us went, enjoyed free everything, no lines of people or mobs of families mingling about.  Nice nice.

  • I throughly enjoyed these photos of your fun day
and both of you are most talented indeed
    :fun: what fun!!!

  • I'm just out wandering around... Still rather new to this whola Xanga thing.

Looks like it was a fun trip..

  • Super pics Mike.  As for your coastal pics that you write about, I drove the PCH last June btw and took some photos which were really postcard perfect (with a point and shoot 35mm).

RYC: I meant "scolding" in a humorous way of course, I think you know that already.  As for me being in the picture, that was purely intentional actually.

  • Mike thanks for visiting my little corner of Cyberspace.   I like your internet Island Idea.... I will have to drop in from time to time.....   Warning: whatever the group consensus appears to be I am likely to take a counter-point.....  LOL  too much teacher in me.

Actually that is not just me in discussions it is also me in really life.  I delight in being the only carpenter in Iowa with a PhD.....   It is fun to watch the looks on people's faces when they press me for some of my background.

BTW I love you tag line

  • Mike

Thank you so much for your kind words.  I keep meaning to post on this topic but it may be the next one before I get back into the groove.  Seems like I am just really tired.  I do feel for your roomy.  I can't imagine going through this a second time when you know exactly what to expect from the first time.  Sometimes I think that it is better not to know how bad it will be.  Thanks for all of the kind words.  Wish you were close enough to take treks with me also.  LOL  Although here in Dallas we don't have nearly the opportunities.  I am thinking that California is the place to live after looking at all of your photo posts.  You got Maralyn on the vintage caddie.  We got two nude manniquins on a vintage caddie in the middle of nowhere.  Somehow I think you got the best of that deal.  LOL

Hope that you have a great week.

    Hugs
    Kat

  • Hi Mike,

As always, it's great to visit your site. I enjoyed the video, the music is an interesting choice; my hat's off to QOS.
Good profile pic. For the past seven years I've been alternating between to wool flat-caps I picked up in Ireland. I've noticed this past year or two that more men are going "old school" with their lids.
I really dig the Marilyn look-a-like! Did you get her number? WOW!!

Your poem "Decades" is pleasantly touching. I've read many wonderful poems on xanga (yours included... of course), and it baffles me how well some people can write with such gentle innocence. I try (sometimes) to take this approach; however, the beast of reality has its jaws locked on me arse. I've been dragging the fecking thing for so long now, you could follow the trail of its flesh, through the years I've lived. This is the reason I take the greatest joy in reading other posts.

    Keep up the grand work.

    Peace.

  • Just completed my entry for "Slices of Life"

    Here it is -

    My Internet Island Topic Entry

    .

  • Hi Mike!

Just dropping in......been awhile since I visited and wanted to see what you had been up to. It was fun looking at the Universal pic's....I was there back in the early 80's when Jaws was the main attraction......the back lot was one of my favorite spots as well. This makes me want to go back!!!

Enjoyed reading about all your cars too.....and am jealous that you had a Dart....don't ask me why but for some reason I like those things!! I also had a new unlicensed 84 Honda Shadow 450, it was fun till I wrecked it!! Now that springtime is getting close I find myself daydreaming about a Harley...but then I just put the top down on my Jeep Wrangler and feel the wind in my hair and feel much safer in the process!

So is your "Island" open to anyone? Looks and sounds like a good place to be...I'm interested ..........Donna
