PhotoPost: Pacific Coast Highway Series
In 2004 I created the "Small Town America in Lost Angeles" series of photos for my Webshots Gallery. The photo series takes four folders and has roughly 400 photos online. I also took a photo series of Hollywood Boulevard. These series can be found among the folders on my Webshots Gallery. This year, I am planning a series on Pacific Coast Highway. Not only do I hope to get a lot of photos here in town and in Long Beach, Torrance, and the Beach Cities, but perhaps take some photos while driving up the coast with the top down when the weather gets better.
Since those living in the North Eastern States suffered through a nor'easter that dropped more snow on Central Park in NYC than has been seen in over 40 years, and we had 80 degree weather and clear skies this past weekend, I began my photo series with some shots on Sunday. However, today I also took my camera to work, and by the time I got off, a cloud cover had formed, and it was quite overcast. Didn't stop me from snapping a few photos, however. Here is a Bob's Big Boy right off of PCH in Torrance. Bob's used to be a rather large restaurant chain in SoCal but they went out of business in the early 90s. I was quite surprised to see Carrow's "turn into" a Bob's and I haven't been in this restaurant yet, but wanted to snap a photo for the first in my Pacific Coast Highway Series.
Right up the street, also in Torrance, I shot this photo showing some of the hillside homes on the hill leading to the Palos Verdes peninsula. This was also on Sunday, and the weather was quite nice.
Further up the street I got a photo of one of the now ubiquitous Walgreen's Drug stores, which now blanket the South Bay. The landscape changes quite often around here, and there used to be a complete shopping center here, which was torn down to create, you guessed it, another shopping center. The ocean is on the other side of the "hill", about 6 or 8 miles away.
This was taken today, at lunch outside of one of the many apartment complexes in Long Beach, right off of PCH. I sometimes drive to work using Pacific Coast Highway. I liked the idea that they have a "For Rent" sign right on the name of the apartment complex, which looks like it needs a paint job.
This is the exit lane for PCH on the 110 (Harbor) Freeway going southbound. Shot from the front window of my car as I slowed down. Torrance Airport has exactly one runway, but a lot of classic and antique planes are housed there, and the Torrance Air Show attracts a lot of people.
Here is a row of new bikes for sale at California Harley Davidson about four blocks from where I live in Lomita. We have two east-west boulevards which go through town, Lomita Blvd, and PCH. California Harley has really expanded in the past five years, and now takes up almost a whole half block. That's a new silver 1300 in front.
Just cause I like this bike, here is another view.
We have a topless bar in Harbor City. I liked it's old name and paint job better. It used to be called the "Front View Cabaret". In order to get this photo, I'm across the street and crouching in the parking lot of the minimall with the azaleas right in front of the lens. I snapped about six photos before getting one without traffic. PCH is packed with cars most all the time.
I'm always taking photos of phone booths. Here is one outside the 99cents store, called "Bargain 2000" across from the topless bar.
The painting on the outside of Bill's Liquor, also in Harbor City, has been there for as far back as I can remember. Pat and I would buy our racing forms here if we were taking off for the track from Bob's (The Frat House) where I lived in the late 80s and early 90s before moving in with her.
It was a mite overcast, and almost 4pm when I snapped this and the next photo showing some of the motel signs along PCH. There are lots of motels along the boulevard. They are constantly being remodeled, and bought and resold, and yet at night time their parking lots are always packed with autos. I've always thought it neat that Pacific Coast Highway is one of our "Main Streets", except when I need to get somewhere in a hurry. "Rush Hour" lasts nearly all day. More photos will be presented in this series thoughout the year. Next time I'll be photographing when it's a nicer day, but I've been planning this blog entry since last Friday, and wanted to show some of PCH.

RYC: I think the fact that they touch so deeply is a compliment... but you are correct 35 is not great... i think I'll go visiting members tonight!!
Great photos!! I hope you had a wonderful Valentine's Day filled with :heartbeat: and
! Thanks for your comment ... we're still waiting to receive the financial award package ... I hope it's good!! Have a great week!
:heartbeat:Love the photos!!! I love PCH!!!
i love your tour pictures. it makes me feel like i've been there! some great shots here!:)
Your photo posts are always so very interesting...!
RYC: Heat in our garages in Michigan? It's called Springtime! That photo is also an prime example on why our hoses go inside for the winter (and why I go inside as well for winter!!!). We had a mini-flood like that a couple of years ago when the heat tape on our outside faucet failed -- I came home to a decorative ice spray in my garage. Luckily it hadn't burst too long before.
Hey, I used to be a carhop at BigBoy's (in cleveland!) had to wear red hotpants and everything!
Thankfully, thankfully I didn't have to skate-- cuz I never learned how!
I love this walk down PCH. I feel like I'm there! It would be fun to walk it with you, just listen to you talk about it and reminisce. Yes, that would be nice.
Very nice pictures! I love the hillside homes--we don't have those here. We do have Walgreens everywhere, though. I'm so envious of your nice weather, and even the azaleas are in bloom!!?? I love California, but haven't been there since I was 10 years old and have only vague memories of it. It's to darn far away from NY.
I finally broke down and planned a trip to Fla. over the Easter break, though. I need HEAT! We'll go to Ft. Myers Beach for 3 days, then Disney for 4 days, then back to F.M.Beach for 3 more. I really can't stand Disney, and would prefer to spend my whole vacation at the beach....but it isn't happening that way.
I look forward to seeing more pictures. Happy Wednesday.:)
:heartbeat: I showed the Long Beachphotos to Bob---who managed the music at many Long Beach Clubs. All he recognized was the topless joint. Mmmmmmm.

Nice pictures!! I saw your comment at screaminginmyhead's site about the topics being "hard" I think that sometimes, they just make you think too much
Kind of like getting an essay assignment and you want a good grade, you want others to read and enjoy and hopefully take something away from it.
I was trying to think of a blog topic just for fun and I couldn't think of anything. I know you said once you don't like the daily routine blogs, but mostly that is what I blog about, my life. and my life is pretty routine. I find it fun to have a blog topic, because it makes me think. Others like the blogthings quizzes and yah for shits and giggles, I do them sometimes, but rarely post them. It's harder for me to meet people because I am protected but i guess I'm guarded about who gets to read about my daily routine, insecurites, thoughts, hopes and dreams..........my public posts are for jokes, or silly/stupid questions of the day, but anyway, i'm rambling here. Keep up the topics. I look forward to them.
 Hey Mike!!!
Well, I guess I should expand on the statement of "losing it"
I got MAD!!! I was so upset when I hear my babies that should be closer fight argue and try to get each other in trouble!!:) You are a child to someone right? Well, you know how it was when you messed up at home and do not have to be a parent but to give advice as a person to person...ya know? I tell my girls, "you want me to respect you, then respect me!!!:sunny: Best advice I could give them!!!
Well, have a great day and I will see you again!!! Hugs to You!!!!
 Buh-Bye
I just loooove those bikes !!! :goodjob: :spinning:

Michael, I was a little surprised to see that you had been by to see me this morning. I was happy mind you but surprised. I really appreciate the fact that you are taking the photos of PCH as I have never been to CA. I hope one day to make it but until then your photos are giving me a preview. Have to say the Harley is my favorite out of those. Can't help it I am a biker. Thank you for stopping in to see me and I anxiously await our next writing challenge. Have a wonderful day. Tami
Mike, thanks for your comment about my Getty photo. I'm quite amused at watching people and I was amused at your photos from the Getty. I have a couple I took in Paris of people looking at art. I posted them in my Xanga a while ago, maybe I will re-post.
Oh, another thing. I grew up in the South Bay so I am getting nostalgic with your photos.
Just had to tell you that I clicked on your 'Electric Poetry' link..and read the first page...I just love that poem...love it..and the thoughts about poets as well...I so agree with them both..and they are written beautifully.....take care..Lee
