Recently while websurfing for "images" for my massive database, I found a couple of websites dedicated to the toys and games of my youth. WesClark.com has an excellent section in Avocado Memories entitled "Sixties Toys". The composite I created above uses images taken mostly from that site. Another site I vistited was Toyadz.com, which was linked from Wes' site. For the pure reason that some normal people have been taking the time to create websites which chart America's (and the world's) cultural history, I am always on the lookout for well designed and informative websites. The best ones are just as good as checking out a definitive text in the library. I love to hit the Search bar and see what will come up. The toys in the picture above are all toys my brother and sister and I had in the mid sixties. The "set-up" in the center is "Moonbase Alpha", which was "Santa's" gift to me one Christmas. "Lincoln Logs" were a building block toy, like Tinkertoys and American Plastic Bricks. Standing next to G. I.. Joe, which was never called a "doll", is Tammy, Ideal's fashion doll. My sister had the Tammy dolls instead of Barbie. The "Secret Sam" attache case was released at the height of the "James Bond" craze which reached a fever pitch in 1965. "Mouse Trap" is still a popular game. And the little Beatles figurines are now classic collectibles.
I was looking at a Toy's R Us catalog in the weeks before Christmas, and for some reason, it seemed as if the plastic toys looked less interesting and less "real" than the toys of my youth. My brother and I collected model kits, planes, cars, and specialty items, like the Creature From the Black Lagoon kit. We had countless blocks and building toys. We used the dolls as "people" who populated the world we built.
All three of us had vivid imaginations, and the toys became extensions of the playtime process. I always wanted one of these dashboards for our full size "cars", which were my brother's and my beds. But neither Dad nor "Santa" bought me the dashboard. When I saw the image on the Sixties toys site, all the memories of watching the TV commercial, begging for the toy, and then experiencing tons of disappointment when the toy didn't come.
I did get a "Cape Canaveral" set-up one year, and the spring loaded "rockets" had enough power to take out one of your eyes.
One toy I never had growing up was a bicycle. The Schwinn Sting Ray was the most popular bike in school during the sixties, and I ached because my parents wouldn't let me have one. We had lots of toys, but our world was pretty insular away from school, and bikes would allow us to roam farther than our mother wanted. I did ride my friend Steve's bike in middle school. I got to be pretty good at it, and finally bought my first bicycle, a ten speed, in the 70s while in college
Each of us three kids received about 10-15 toys of varying size and cost. Usually half of these broke within a week of Christmas. There's another great nostalgic site called "Toys of Another Time", which allows for what I think is a rather nice segue into my latest "composite artwork" which might as well be called "Toys of a Future Time", but in fact is called "Schoolbusses on the Moon". This was created in the computer, one of the newest "toys" I have. As a single guy I have really never stopped filling up the toy box from when I was a kid. The latest "toy" is one I just got for Christmas. Each year at the company Christmas party, there are giveaways which are selected by drawing a name out of a bag. I usually "receive" a nice gift each Christmas, and this year I got picked for a DVD Home Theater in a box, but I already have two home theaters in different rooms, so traded for the ipod.
I've already loaded up over five hours (already 270 songs, and less than 2% of the 40 GIGABYTE hard drive is used up.) Last night I wore the thing to bed. It's like a walkman, except with crystal clear "room filling" or should I say "head-tripping" sound. After the songs or CD's are loaded (first the contents of the CDs have to be stored on your hard drive on the computer), the ipod itself assigns titles, artists, and categorizes the selection. You can customize your own "playlists" or "shuffle" the songs like I do on my 200 CD jukebox. I don't really like the earpieces. I'm sure there are headphones, but what I REALLY like about it is there is an accessory cassete adaptor that can hook it to the car stereo. What better time to replace those two blown speakers and hook this little baby up to the Eclipse stereo. I tell ya, the sound quality through the little earpads I really don't like is magnificent. Well, I did seque to the computer, not the ipod, although it is, in fact, a computer with a 40GB hard drive. The computer allows me to indulge my muse when I want to use it as a typewriter or a drawing pad. It allows me to copy/paste whatever is in my imagination, or my imagination creates the images as I go along. Today, I updated the "Computer Art" section of the "Yes, But Is It Art? Gallery", and added a few new and older composites. The latest, below, is, as announced, "Schoolbusses on the Moon". I added the planet Saturn in the background as an afterthought, but that sort of cancels out this being on the moon, unless Saturn has mysteriously rushed headlong into our atmosphere, and perhaps that's what happened.
EDIT: 12/24/05. I just finished watching the History Channel's History of Toys, which was very captivating and nostalgic. I put the "Creature" model image up last year (which my brother built) but never got the Dracula model on the blog which is the one I put together, so here is an image of the Dracula model.
All the Universal Horror monsters were included in the set, which was really popular. I am also posting another "new" photo that wasn't on last year's entry, and this is an ad for Tonka Toys. I had the trencher, no. 524 on the advertisement. The History Channel show mentioned that most people think that grown men who collect toys, or obsess over toys from their youth, are searching for their childhoods, but it is much better to think of the captivation with old toys, as a connection with youth that has never gone away. As I've written many times, I was blessed with a family that provided us with lots of playthings, and we "invented" a few of our own. One of the guys who reps suppliers for our company collects G.I. Joe dolls, er, I mean, action figures, and arranges them in tableau. I can hardly wait to see some of his 'creations' and I will photograph them of course for future blog entries. Christmas is tomorrow, and in case you're reading this and I still haven't gotten around to "your" blog to wish you a Merry Christmas, I want to Wish it to you here and now.
PLUMBING UPDATE: A carpet cleaner came in and shampooed all the "visible" carpet in the house, except in the bedrooms. (The cat's don't go into my rooms so that's okay, the carpet is fairly clean.) I moved all the furniture away from the affected area in the dining room. It's still wet under the carpet in there, and it's over a week now since the pipes broke. The plumber is coming back next week to finish his job. On top of all this, I had a phone guy in here yesterday replacing one of the lines that got wet causing some telephone problems. My roommate was suspiciously at work while all this was going on. I did use the moving of furniture around as an excuse to do some housecleaning in the "out of the way " places, and one of my New Year's resolutions is to clean up the garage. I can't stuff anything else in there until I make some more room. The owner isn't going to let us keep the possibly moldy carpet, either. He's going to have someone put linoleum in the hall and the dining room, which should make it easier to clean. I'll just put a throw rug in the hall in front of the bathroom. He's earning that rent increase, and the owner even helped me carry an old television into the garage. I think he's going to be a good "landlord" in the long run. Our neighbors with the screaming kids might even move soon. I think it was their son who scratched my car last year. Things are looking up, perhaps.

Thanks for the tour through the sixites toys. I think that I still have a few of those in my attic. That bike brought back memories. I saw one almost just like it at Wal Mart yesterday. I couldn't believe it. Banana seat and all. Thanks for coming by and leaving a comment and for your wonderful support. I did go back and read the poems you recommended. They were very good. You were obviously very talented at a young age. That makes your comments even more special. I shall have to attempt more poetry. After all of my guests leave of course. Right now I am in survival mode. Actually I am hiding. Way too much in the way of socializing going on right now.

On your art site I was the most interested in your Rosemead High School photography. I teach ESL in Rosemead now but for the Alhambra School District and a private school called Rosemead College.
This brings back so many memories!! I always loved the Lincoln Logs and Tinker toys and Trains. Don’t miss understand I also loved my dolls, and pretend make-up kit and all the girl stuff too. I had to wait to visit all our friends who had boys to play with LL or TT or Trains that’s if they would even let me near any of those toys just because I was a girl. Every year I would ask my Dad for a train set to go under the Christmas tree with all my little cardboard houses and figures. He would just laugh and say girls don’t play with trains. Then when I was 14 years old I asked my Daddy again for a train set. My Dad laughed again and said “girls don’t play with trains and any way you are a Big girl”. I pouted as usual. My lower lip could drop and make anyone see how sad I was it usually worked. My Daddy looked at me and said you are serious!!! YES! I have wanted a train set ever since I can remember!! My Dad looked perplexed! But that Christmas actually before Christmas on my birthday December 3 I got my Tyco HO train set.

Thanks for your message. I am 6'2 and considered big framed guy....my normal healthy weight by Doctor rules would be 204-209. I don't mean being 15 pounds over weight.
I had my Christmas in November when I got to go to Europe.
Hopefuly I'll have another Christmas in the spring of 06

The movie is excellent. It's a shame it has to be stigmitized with the gay cowboy movie that will scare people from just seeing how life was in that time when happened to be differen't. The movie is probably a bit slow moving but a great story and I agree with you about Ang Lee.

For me, it was the toys of the forties and dolls, lots of dolls, books and little housekeeping sets and dishes....Housekeeping sets. I guess that was appropriate for little girls in the 40's. I also got board games like monopoly. When Toys R Us, opened, a great deal was lost since the wonderful and glorious toy department of the great department stores could not compete with plastic crap(now you know how I really feel) Barbie(yuk) doesn't compare with the horseman dolls and the well-made quality dolls of the former era. Barbie dolls came during our daughter's time which is more your era....
I always wanted an electric train set, a chemistry set and an erector set. I commented on your last entry.
But just one more thing...I enjoy those "feel good" Christmas Stories like It's a Wonderful Life and The Wizard of Oz. My favorite was always Miracle on 34th Street with Natalie Wood. I couldn't find it this year to Tivo it. It was on one of the pay channels and it was the modern updated version. Of course, The Christmas Story is meaningful for me since it shows the Higbee's Window of my wonderful hometown, Cleveland, OH. which is where the movie was filmed.
